Nice long distance dry hookset at 25:40. This for me is the ultimate in fly fishing for trout. Beats the crap out of Euro nymphing in terms of fun, skill, and satisfaction.
Can’t beat it! Although we’ve been trying the euro game lately and getting the right depth, speed, and detecting soft strikes take quite a bit of skill
Years ago I was fishing the creek in the AF Academy in CO. Found a pocket of Brookies like that. Had a small bugger and after 20 min I caught so many the flies were shredded and bare. Brookies def have some teefs!
With that much damage, I think you gotta be in my neck of the woods, but I can't figure out where you're at lol I am near Old Fort, maybe you guys went up near Boone or something, I am not too familiar with that area. I fished the North Mills and it's fishing pretty great! Really not much but stonks there, either; the trout got washed out by the storm bigtime, but they stocked it in early December. West fork of the Pigeon is fishing damn good too, just check the water level before you go - it was WAY down in the red when I looked this past Friday. Hoping Curtis Creek and its tributaries come back, too. It got hit hard.
@@SlabDynasty Gotcha. I didn't recognize that particular place you guys parked or that deep hole that you fished, but I recognize it now lol that deeper hole (I think) is a popular swimming hole in the warmer months. Yeah man, I hit the Pigeon a little over two weeks ago just before the December stocking and it was fishing great! I also fished it about two weeks after the storm. That community took a LOT of damage, but I was happy to see that there were still a lot of trout in the water. Then they stocked in November and it was really good, but now the last couple weeks the water has been severely low. I was planning to fish the WFP this past friday but ended up hitting the Mills instead once I saw the water levels on the Pigeon. Glad you guys managed to hook a few! I know some really great spots on that river... hope I see you in the water sometime and keep up the good work that you do showcasing our awesome trout waters here in WNC!!
The first spot is a tough place to fish and that area is tough in general. The first time I fished the first spot I only caught one or two. I even tied on a dry fly with about 12ft of leader and those fish would spook while the fly was in the air. That was this summer. I also guide during the summer and the only thing we caught them on was an olive sculpin much like you fished. I'm glad to see that area didn't get destroyed. The only thing that has changed is the tree down at the deep hole.
Great to know. Have heard great things about this river but I think we just hit it on a tough day. We were two weeks post-stocking and the water was extremely low. We’ll try it again some time soon I’m sure
We drove up to the parkway after this and saw the upper part of that river and several tribs. Looks awesome, will definitely be back to blue line in the warmer months!
I’ve noticed that none of the big stocked trout are bitting anything but the small ones will bite all day if you can get their attention. Similar to what you talked about in the video.
Not exactly sure where ur fishing in wnc but the rivers I’ve fished the bigger stocked fish have been eating natural looking nymphs compared to normal they’ll eat eggs and squirmy worms this time of year but black and brown size 16-18 stone flies have been working really well for me
Lmao he said it’s not where your rainbows or browns will be just brookies. He’s completely wrong considering I’ve caught multiple big rainbows and browns out of that specific hole lol.
Never said never…I meant you just don’t typically see bows and browns stacked up in those holes like the brookies do. I’ve caught big dumb stocker bows out of holes like this too 😂
Bro it’s not that tough you just gotta learn more. I took a first timer client there 6 days ago and put him on 2 big rainbows and 20 of the lil fish. So id say its not that tough lol
You're a very good and patient teacher! Great fly fishing channel.
Nice job teaching. I double up forceps. I always keep a second pair in my bag.
Wow your buddy looked pretty good for his first time fly fishing!

That’s awesome, we need to get out west soon
What stream are yall on?
Interesting video. For fussy and heavily pressured stockers my go to fly is a size 18 zebra midge. I’ll have to try the jig streamer sometimes.
Love a tiny zebra midge this time of year

This was WF Pigeon. Forgot to mention that it was EXTREMELY low that day and I think that’s part of why it was so tough. First time there for me

@@SlabDynasty Nice, the Pisgah is always a beautiful place that kinda allows you to get away from heavy pressured creeks.

it may look fine but the bug habitat there was destroyed. its been pretty much midges and streamers for me since the stockers got pressured.
Might want to think about getting a polarizing lens for your camera. When you do that we can then see the fish in the water.
That’s about 15 minutes from me! There’s great blue line fishing right up the road. It’s so different up there these days…

That DH your on is bad to get poached. I've even watched people throw cast nets, game warden is never there when they need to be on that watershed.
Damn, hate to hear that
100% truth i have seen a few & never a game warden around
