Really appreciate you talking through your doubts . All the same doubts I have, but if you can be such a talented artist and teacher and still have doubts and concerns it gives me permission to doubt my art and keep going. So thank you!
You did a super job painting your raindrops. I am going to give them a try this morning. I have painted a water drop on a leaf, but raindrops on a window, or glass are quite different I see..Great tutorial Emma. 🥰
I have to admit there have been times when watching you paint something you’ve never done before I’ve thought, why didn’t she practice this before filming? But now I realize, and very much appreciate, you’re teaching us how to approach something new and different. Talking through the process, with your doubts,
Hi Emma - I appreciate that you shared your experiance of the 1st time painting a new object/technique, with no prior practice. This is one reason that makes you so relatable to your followers - knowing that even with your beautiful talent, you too, initially have doubts while painting it - and then you work the steps and pull it thru. Great job! You are an inspiration!!!
Love this technique and yes I think stepping away will give you a fresh eye. As my Granmumm always said of new things, " If at first you don't succeed, try try again"!
Wow!!! I am soo blown away. I am going to try this!!! Thank you so much for sharing even though this was your first attempt. It turned out so good and I don’t think mine would. But I am gonna try till I love it. Thank you so much for sharing again
Just bought my first ever sketchbook and painting raindrops will definitely be my first page. I think yours looks amazing. You always make things look so easy to paint.
They are tricky indeed. I've watched do many of these videos. Looks 👍. Also if you do not want to ruin your brushes dip them in dish soap before you start picking up the masking fluid. The masking fluid will come right out of the brush.
You did a brilliant job at explains and showing us a way to do raindrops, don’t sell yourself short. The way you do it makes me think I could have a go at this. 😊🇬🇧
Looking forward to trying this. If you put liquid handsoap, dish soap on the brush before you use the masking fluid it saves your brushes, just washes off after. I still use an old brush just incase. It works like a charm and masking fluid still works.
You nailed it! The shadows at the end made it pop. I'm so trying this. I'd love to see more ways of using the masking fluid. Just saw the new and improved web site. I'm blown away. I want to go try everything
Hey Emma, I was happy to hear that you had the same experience with a masking pen that I had. I thought I was doing something wrong. But I now know I am in good company with you. I may now try the Windsor Newton masking fluid, like you did. I think your raindrops were a good first try. I appreciate how you can constructively critique your work and make positive suggestions to improve on it. I have learned so much from you. Thank you for making my experience with watercolour painting so enjoyable.😀🌺❤️
You should try a masking fluid eraser! I think you'll like it and you won't have to touch the paper with your hands so much. It's really satisfying to remove, too! I'm going to try this - thank you!
Great lesson! I always have trouble doing this. FYI- if you dip your brush in liquid soap before masking fluid it will save your brush--but still using an old brush. BTW- I splurged on the Etcher Perfect sketchbook and love it.
Thanks for sharing Emma. Water drops are a challenge, especially in watercolor and I think these turned great! I would love to see more, specifically to see how you would approach this subject a second time around.
I wanted to try rain on windows when I first started watercolor but thought it would be too difficult. Thanks for this video I have decided to give it a try with masking fluid!!
Awesome tutorial, Emma! Thanks for doing this one since I want to try and recreate raindrops on objects or just rain. As soon as I get done with mine and if it looks decent, I will send you a pic. I have one that is done with coloring pencil but is not the same. Thanks again for sharing your talents with us and always doing so with so much grace!
What is in the raindrop is a mini upside down image of what is behind it. You can even see tree tops in the one. Where the edge does not have the dark border is where the thinnest part is. The edge is where the water is building up.
I think you did a great job. Will have to try it. I have tried the masking pen also and didn’t have good luck with it. Like the Winston & Newton masking fluid too. Thank you for your great videos!
This was a lot of fun! It really comes together at the end after highlights and shadows/outlines are added. I could have used a darker sky wash so that’s one change I’ll make. I’ll also try to create more of a blurry landscape with variety than I did the first time.
Tried to paint this with acrylic paint once. Much easier since I don't have masking fluid. 😂 Just got a problem with the fading background which seemed a bit unnatural (or it's me who's not doing acrylic right haha). I still prefer watercolour tho. It looks good even more in your hand. 😁 And btw, that reference photo has been my home screen wallpaper for a few months now. :) Have a good day, Emma!
Hey Emma! Thanks so much for your videos. In these dreary January days, your videos, for me, are something to look forward to! You are so talented! Thanks, again.
Hi dear Emma I liked your tutorial very much and would like to suggest more tutorial with reflections on glass, like with marbles , or glass vase with light shining thru , playing on transparency. It has always been a real challenge for me and I certainly could use your clever suggestions
Hi Emma, I tried the delphiniums yesterday. My issue is I always use too much pigment. I’m not going to quit though…they are my favourite flowers too. 🇦🇺
This was the hardest thing I ever done when I was rock painting….trying to make realistic rain drops, bubble…etc. finally after a looooong time it all boiled down to nothing more than shading. Now I’m very new with watercolors so this may be a whole new ballgame like everything else in watercoloring, I believe that’s why I love it so much…the challenge. Yours looks amazing Emma so yeah I’m going to give it a try. Thanks for another great tutorial!
One thing that helps to remember is that when you are looking at a perfectly round drop of water, you're seeing a vertically reversed image of whatever you are looking at if you were close up and looking straight through. If you can take that and morph it to fit the shape of water, it tends to make more sense. This is why it looks dark bottom of the top drops and light on the underside of the bottom drops.
Hi Emma, I really enjoy and appreciate your videos. I am new to watercolor, I have always used pencil. There is this very useful book collection (3 I think, though I have 2) titled Colorists special effects (by Helen Elliston) , with tons of ideas and tips for pencil but I realize that many can be applied to watercolor as well. There's how to paint realistic water drops in one of the books. I have tried it and the step by step explanation is great. I will start using these book for watercolor. You may find them interesting as well.
TIP: Dip your brush in MURPHY’S OIL SOAP, then wipe with a paper towel before dipping into your masking fluid. Brush will clean right up with water. I still use designated brushes for masking fluid.
Raindrops are like lenses. Lenses turn the image they capture upside down. So in our raindrops, the sky color comes to lie at the bottom, the green grass (or whatever constitutes the ground) is on top. If one enlarged one drop, one could see a perfect, albeit rounded and turned upside down image of the surroundings :-) Is that cool or what :-) Maybe that helps to analyze whats going on in the drops (colorwise), Great tutorial. Thanks
Really appreciate you talking through your doubts . All the same doubts I have, but if you can be such a talented artist and teacher and still have doubts and concerns it gives me permission to doubt my art and keep going. So thank you!

You nailed it! Just fyi - embossing styluses work great for applying masking fluid as it is precise and can be easily removed once dry
Wow!!! I am soo blown away. I am going to try this!!! Thank you so much for sharing even though this was your first attempt. It turned out so good and I don’t think mine would. But I am gonna try till I love it. Thank you so much for sharing again

I find a darker background helps, but most important is matching your values in the drops
- no need to mask if you have gouache or similar.
I'm not a serious painter. I enjoyed watching this. Magical & looks realistic!
Fantastic raindrops.First attempt! I hope my 43rd will look half as good.
I think you did a really awesome job! It totally looked like raindrops on the window.
They are tricky indeed. I've watched do many of these videos. Looks 👍.

Thankyou for this video. It's most helpful. My next painting session will be raindrops and water drops on leaves. All a learning process.

The masking pen was awful for me too
Same with me ! The brand Emma uses I’ve had great luck with.
First attempt, perfection. Xxx
I think it was brilliant very realistic and like you said it's about looking at all the colours in a rain drop. Thanks Emma your awesome 👌
I appreciated this tutorial! The end result was so pretty. I found silicone brushes that work great for putting down masking fludid.
You should try a masking fluid eraser! I think you'll like it and you won't have to touch the paper with your hands so much. It's really satisfying to remove, too! I'm going to try this - thank you!

Really liked how you filmed this video, with talking through it afterwards. It looked great 👍
You did a great job especially for the first time. Thanks so much.
Amazing Emma - these magic-ed themselves into raindrops when you added the white! They could become quite an obsession!! Well done and huge thanks 🙏
Yours look very realistic! Can’t wait to try!
Thanks for sharing Emma. Water drops are a challenge, especially in watercolor and I think these turned great! I would love to see more, specifically to see how you would approach this subject a second time around.

Your raindrops look really good! Thanks for the detailed explanation and your observations about how you made adjustments as you went along.
Wow! They look so real! Awesome! Makes me want to try it. 😊
This looks great Emma. I learned a lot. Thank you for sharing your first time painting raindrops with us.

That is insane! You are an amazing artist!😊

They're gorgeous. Also my favourite flowers! :)
Good luck with your watercolouring!
They look amazing thank you x
Emma it has really come out well
I think your raindrops look wonderful. It's definitely more than "pretty ok". lol Adding this video to my "to paint" list.
They look fantastic! You gave me courage to try raindrops☺️ Thank you for your tutorials…

Such a beautiful way to paint raindrops ❤️
Looks great! I'll have to give this subject a try! Thanks again Emma.

Shade and light are the key to realism! Or so I hear... I'm still getting the hang of it myself hehe
Great look and always wanted to try. Thanks
Hi Emma, thank you for this post. I really enjoyed the tutorial and I’m looking forward to trying to paint these.
Can You Please Do Another One ...👍
More Water Drops
If you dip your brush in liquid soap first you can rinse the masking fluid right out and you can reuse your cheap brush.
Excellent reminder!

I think you did an awesome job. How would you do raindrops now if you were to paint them again?
I’m inspired!!
Great job! Thank you!
Look up Yong Chen (watercolourist) and Chris Cheng (Pencil Colourist). Excellent tutorials on raindrops
SO cleaver and Brave
Looks good I reckon thanks.
Thank you for page. they good
Dip your masking bruah in liquid soap before you use it. Then the stuff comes rught off.
I think they look realistic 💦
I don't see the link for the reference photo
Sorry, it’s in the description now!
