I have an old micron pen that dried up. I pulled the nib out of the end and I kept it to use for a “scratch tool”. Works well and feels more natural to hold than a toothpick or a darning needle.
I like 3 the best and 4 is my next favorite. I can see how number 1 could be a lot of fun to do and would look great if one can get the water right. Thanks for this...I love trees and these will be fun to paing!

Loved all of these trees! While you were trying to fix the first one I was saying no no no..because it's made such a great misty forest tree. It's my fav but I will be trying all of these! Also appreciated the tree brush idea. Thank you for all you do. You were the first artist I subscribed to after a friend in a beginner watercolor class I was taking showed me your channel & I've been hooked since & love what you do. Your honesty is so refreshing. 🧡
As a realism painter of both acrylic and oil landscapes for thirty plus years, I'm envious of that first technique. Looked almost like cheating. 😊 Never dabbled in watercolors, but this technique makes me wanna give them a try.

Love it. I have the same spray bottle, and it sprays larger drops in some place. You can test them on a colored paper or blue paper towel type. I use the adjustable spray bottle from dollar stores. Liked all the techniques..

"Lynda Norman" does the first technique as well, her approach is a bit bolder, I like something more in between. She does a great job explaining the water spray in her "Mastering Watercolor Vignettes: Dreamy Landscapes..." video, around 7:00:00 in, posted 2 months ago. Highly recommend checking it out. I think the mist is too fine in some spray bottles. The bottle needs to "spit" (sorry) the water at the page.

cool. I have a spritz water bottle, mini size, also a half spray bottle, by T. Holtz, but I'm thinking for the first tree I'm going to try a tooth brush, at an angle, I'll try to circle back and let you know ...thanks for the inspiration. Also I saw an artist usa a fan brush it looked like the first one, and had a background like your first one looked like, so she did the green mixed with some purple, like you have done...and dabbed it into the middle. and very little water at that point, my tree had spred so when I darkened in the middle it looked awesome after it dried...!
I admired your first tree with the spray. It encouraged me because today I tried a technique that looked doable by anyone who can follow three steps! Anyone? Not me. You managed to save yours and that’s great. Mine was too far gone. Maybe next time🙂
Hullo Emma, this was a very nice video and demonstration of different techniques for painting trees! I liked the spray bottle technique the most in this video. I have been painting more fall transition foliage and brightly colored trees of different types. I love painting the Japanese Maple! I often wonder at the different types of trees that are most common in the New England area of the US? I looked it up once, but I do not remember what is there just now. I am wondering how many of these techniques will work with them? I like the saying : There is no poorly painted tree, even the most imperfect tree, is a perfect tree!

I teach art and have many watercolor books explaining different techniques. This is the first time I have seen the toothpick technique - WOW!
