Legendary Pokémon Aren’t Special Anymore, but Not for the Reason You Think

  • Legendary Pokémon are supposed to be something that take your breath away once in playthrough, maybe twice, but recently I've heard a lot of people become down on the way Legends have been treated recently. So let's look through and see if we can determine if there's anything that has changed about these special creatures over the years...

When I think there are "too many" legendaries, it's really just that I think some of them don't NEED to be legendary. Take heatran for example. It coud be a little less powerful, a little more common, able to breed, just an ordinary solitary pokémon like tropius or lapras.

Personally I like extremely rare Pokémon over legendary & mythical. Only having one obtainable from the wild or as a special gift gives it a special feeling. However, letting them be breed-able allows players to get multiple ones without having to have a second game or cheating(You can also get perfect stats without having to save-scum/edit). Even Togepi feels more special than some gift legendaries, cause you have to at least hatch it.
Sort of off topic, but I was surprised to find out Rotom & Spiritomb weren't legendary Pokémon. Back in gen IV they felt special & unique with how you obtained them. Both are still rare in the games they are catchable in(Spiritomb usually has a unique way of obtaining it).
EDIT: As an addendum I also think some legendary/mythical Pokémon should be breed-able, but are unobtainable from breeding. Like how Manaphy can produce Phione thru breeding. I do think however that legendary/mythical Pokémon shouldn't evolve, but have different forms instead. I know we already have Cosmog, Type: Null, & Kubfu, but evolution still feels more like a "normal" Pokémon thing IMO.

This is…….surprisingly true. I didn’t realize how recent legendary Pokémon, particularly the ones outside the main story events, feel less special due to how they are often handed out via online gifts. By doing that, we are kinda robbing the mystery of what makes the Pokémon a big deal outside of its stats and Dex entries. I’m guessing that’s why a number of them don’t really stay in my mind for long like Margearna. (Keep forgetting about that one tbh.) So the reason Legendary Pokemon aren't special anymore is because there are less of them per region which makes the ones that are introduced feel off since they are all mandatory Legendary encounters and not like the ones in the first few regions, right?
I remember in Pokemon Black I was doing some back tracking and found a Pokemon in a Cave, it was Cobalion and I actually made it a regular of the team until I finished the Main Story of Black.
Funnily enough I also had another Legendary on my team, Tornadus, whom I caught at level 40. So my Party was Audino, Emboar, Vanilluxe Cobalion and Tornadus, I managed to find out that Reshiram was going to be added left my last slot open.
So, my conclusion is that People want more Legendaries per region so that they can differentiate the Legendaries between the Box Art Legends, and the optional Legends whose myth's are more mysterious since you have to look for them specifically instead of being driven to them by the story or being given via mystery gift.
I think they best thing more Mythical Pokemon was in Gen 4 with the Mystery Gifts being items for them, and allowing one to find them once one has the item in question.
I think this was discontinued due to hackers being able to trigger the events for these Mythicals without the Key Item.
Though now we can have it back since Pokemon and GameFreak can just update the Game with the new Mythical to coincide with their Key Item and Event.

The thing that's detracted from Legendary Pokemon _feeling_ legendary, for me, is catching them in the first place. It makes sense with the limitations of older games, but in the future I'd like to see more dynamic and interesting relationships with the Legendaries than catching them. Sure, with the older ones there was some adventure, and catching them was harder, but if you look at the movies the Legendaries all have some role that they play in the world. They're integrated somehow, and important in their place. Then you just... go hunting, battle them, and put them in a pokeball?
I wanna see some interesting stories that matter to the role of the Legendaries, and you friend them along the way, maybe they join you for a time, but ultimately they're left to fill the role that they're needed for in the world. Maybe they'll still come around to battle for you at key times, either when you really need them or to put on a spectacle.
I think they'd feel more legendary if they necessarily retained a sense of autonomy.

I don't think I actually had to catch her - it was a long time ago but I remember she said she really wanted to travel with me, and insisted I send back one of my party Pokémon so that she could join my party. This stuck with me, because it was so different to how getting Pokémon usually works. I mean, instead of catching her she asked to join me and insisted on going straight onto my party, rather than being able to send her to a box like I normally would. Especially in those games, I think it was the only time I could send a party Pokémon to a box away from a Pokémon Centre or have a new Pokémon join my party when it was full, so that alone set the experience apart. But what really stuck with me was how much she actively wanted to travel with me and be with me, right from start, while most Pokémon try to escape Pokéballs and have to warm up to you when you do catch them, plus she was the only Pokémon who seemed to really not want to be left in a box. Because all that stuck with me, I worked really hard to keep her in my partly almost all the time, and it felt like we had a special connection. Plus she was my Fly Pokémon, so it worked out.

The issue with legendaries can still be tied back into how many there are. Not in the 'oversaturated' sense, but in the regard that pokemon is still about catching pokemon, and people will want to capture the legendaries. The games don't really have a ton of space to put puzzles and lore to integrate every legend 'naturally', so it's likely things like Raid Dens, Soaring, and of course competition and event distributions will always be a later cycle inclusion to give opportunities to get past gen legends. Those will be the 'hand outs'. There are just too many of them otherwise. Not to mention going through 'trails' for all 90ish will be a turn off to a sizeable portion of the fanbase.
The current gen legends on the other hand really do need some nice story and regional integration. That's without doubt. It's how we build up the legendary feel in the fandom. I still think the CT and IoA's take on it's story acquisitions was good. We might have been given prompts sure, a bit of handholding, but you could legit stumble across things just as you explore. That's how I found the regis. Being tied in with the little Peony storyline just gave some context and reason for the prompts. Kubfoo wasn't my favourite event, but it still required both effort and exploration. Same for Calyrex, which I admit I enjoyed more.
Basically, I do agree that new legends do need stories to establish them, and past ones benefit for a bit of challenge like the Dynamax adventure, which does have story behind the plot gimmick.
Wow this was a longer comment than I planned XD

It would've made a lot more sense to go through all of the build up to catching them BEFORE the Eternatus fight
Though at the same time, I think a lot of it is probably just nostalgia - we'll never be able to capture that same feeling the legendaries gave us when we were kids. My kid brother loved Zacian and Zamazenta because SwSh was one of his first pokemon games and has that extra value for him.

I just did the math. The average amount of legendaries in a generation is 12. With Sinnoh being the average, we can now line up the 8 generations in order by the amount of Legendaries introduced.
    Kanto- 5
    Johto- 5
    Kalos- 6
    Hoenn-10
    Sinnoh-12 *
    Unova- 13
    Galar- 14
    Alola- 27
The issue I have with the modern Pokemon games is that there's too many of them. A legendary is meant to be a rare, one of a kind pokemon. This is what the first two generations and Kalos get right. By having a limited amount of legendaries, it adds to their uniqueness. But all that changed in Sun and Moon. With a whopping 27 legendaries, that is way too many if you factor in the Ultra Beasts. The more legendaries you have, the more it takes away from their uniqueness

I'm a bit torn on this issue. I think it's really fun that we can get so many legendaries all at once in newer games, it brings back memories of the generations they were originally from. But I definitely understand the want for more story/lore behind obtaining them.
I think, for each gen's legendary, there should be some kind of quest or optional dungeon to explore to find them and get a chance at catching. But for previous generations, I'm fine with getting them as a gift.
Though it would be interesting if certain regions had different backstories for certain previous legendaries. Like how in the real world, different cultures have similar stories about different gods/goddesses. The point of the stories may be the same, the god/goddess may represent the same things, but the details of the stories are specific to the culture they're from. But rewriting new lore for old legendaries would be extra work. But it was done with the legendary birds, they even got new regional forms to fit the newer region :)

I find this especially problematic for boxarts which are supposed to help the region (Kyogre and Groudon, Zacian and Zamazenta as examples), it makes no sense for them to leave their regions. Same with the regi's, they were locked up in a region for a reason, so it makes no sense for them to appear in others.

Also, when they do appear in a game after they had already been introduced in a previous one, it is just for acessibility for newer players, the story of those pokemon is already concluded (when they do have a lore behind) and they don't actually travel all the way to that region just because yes, otherwise you would have to go all the way out of your way to buy old consoles and game carts from third parties because they ended production years ago, hope they are in a good state, play the game until the part you can capture said legendary pokemon and make a huge chain of transfer from one place to another to another until you finally have that pokemon on the current game. From my personal experience playing Sword and Shield (yep, I played both), the new, strong Galar legendaries feel kinda more special because they're strong, they're mentioned in dialogues, etc. The old legendaries from Dynamax Adventures seem less special. I think this makes a perfect balance where all the legendary pokemon are equally legendary, but Zacian, Zamazenta, Calyrex🤮 and the Regis still feel more special and are more desireable. I don't know... I think it's perfect!

Sure those methods can be fun but they definitely take some of the magic Legendary encounters used to have, but that might just be me getting old.

i think hoenn was peak legendary implementation, especially in emerald. the whole game is about trying to harness the leviathans' power, and, even at the end of the game, you're really just a bystander in a much older conflict. it isn't until the postgame that you can catch any of them, and they're all their own fairly unique encounters even before then. latias and latios are suitably annoying just like all the roaming legendaries are, and the regis are super enigmatic and interesting. great mix of difficulty, obscurity, and story integration imo.

I definitely agree that the problem isn't the number of legendary pokemon, but how they're being handled. Mythics started to feel less and less special after Victini when they were just being given as a Mystery Gift rather than getting an item that would trigger an in-game event to capture them. Legendaries began to feel less special starting with ORAS with every legend being catchable through the Hoopa rings. Then from then onwards Game Freak has some inane in-game reason for how every legend is catchable, whether it's the Ultra Wormholes in seventh gen or the Raid Den adventures in 8th gen. They made them too easy to get without you having to go out of your way to find them in a dungeon at the end.

something i notice in some legendaries that can give their legendary status in the earlier gens, is thanks to their designs we can feel their presence, they look much stronger then all the other pokemon you caught before, of course there are exceptions like the smaller legendaries and mythicals like mew and celebi. but we never feel such presence from say, salamence or tyranitar or metagross, maybe garchomp a little but he's a pseudo-legendary so it can be intimidating in a way.
but take mewtwo for example, you're new to pokemon, you never played it before, but you got to the end and find yourself face to face with mewtwo, and that sprite alone looks intimidating, it's not big it seems just to be a humanoid with a tail, but something about it makes you feel its presence, and you take more caution because of it, as you should because mewtwo is incredibly strong.
the hoenn weather trio too, kyogre and groudon are simply a killer whale with giant fins and a volcanic godzilla-like monster, but their sheer size that you can tell by their sprite can be very overwhelming, as if you're nothing to them, they did shape the sea and land after all. rayquaza has a little more going on but is similar, but gets the added bonus of it being a dragon and all, plus it lives on the ozone layer, and it too is gigantic which you can again tell by its sprite. but size isn't everything of course because wailord was for the longest time the largest pokemon ever but it just looks bubbly and cute despite its size.
now do you feel zacian and zamazenta's presence in their games? i don't feel them at all, their crowned forms are a little chaotic but they don't look fierce at all, zacian is just a dog holding a sword, and zamazenta is just dog wearing a shield, not a bad choice for a pokemon design at all, but not deserving of legendary status, their base forms aren't much better either, zacian looks like a blue dog with strings of hotdogs on his side and zamazenta looks... like a crowned version without the yellow pretty much. all in all, we don't feel their presence, we aren't intimidated by their designs, which we definitely should because their crowned forms are very strong, but we won't because we don't feel any presence.

Part of it is just being a child when you play the games making the legendaries seem so much more impressive. My first pokemon game was diamond when I was around 6 or 7 and I remember getting so excited when I faced dialga for the first time that my heart started racing. It was like this big powerful thing that I finally had gotten my hands on and made me feel so cool lmao. The gen 1-4 crowd are pretty much all adults now so they look fondly back on their first games. Im sure in 10 years there will be a lot more nostalgia posting about the newer games. Another thing is it's so easy to hack pokemon now which kind of cheapens the rarity of them since you can basically get whatever pokemon you want if you really want to.

  • @daddy7888
    @daddy7888 2 роки тому +5

It really does come down to the treatment they are given. Take Groudon and Kyogre, they actually had something to do with the story and always had something to do with the story ever since you met the respective evil teams. They had build up and when you caught them, you felt accomplished because you had caught the very legend that was built up on your journey. Then Zacian and Zamazenta came. They had very minor to do with the story. It was almost like a side quest. A lot of people stop playing a Pokémon game after they become champion and you don’t get the box arts until after being champion. Then Eternatus. It really was one of the worst legendaries in my opinion. It had the story to back it up, but that was almost like a side quest. Most games, your goal is to save the world and become the champion. In swsh, it was just to beat Leon. There was no over looming threat the entire game, just the end. There was no evil team that wanted to destroy the world. It just depends on how the story treats these legendaries and how much of a role they play. But don’t even get me started on all the legendaries being in every game, that’s a can of worms I don’t want to open.

Articuno has a special place to me as it was one of my core team members in all of my red and blue games as a kid.
It is the only legendary I have ever let my self use in a playthrough ever since. most games were beat Koga, catch articuno and use it solo vs Blaine, then proceed rest of the game with Sabrina.
But legendary pokemon have lost being special for many reasons. The internet and playthough videos showing where the legend is, how many legendary pokemon there are in more recent games, also how games have started to make the legendary pokemon easier to catch for story progression( just to name a few reasons ).

Heck, you could even defeat the Regis in SwSh time and time again to reset for a shiny, without even needing to fight the Elite Four.

I think all main series Pokémon games will have the "story legendaries". The ones you catch at the end of the story. Basically the box-art legendaries.
Here's a few other ideas for other types of legendary encounters.
Hidden Pokémon, like the Regis in Hoenn. The puzzles make them much more interestinf. With some small hints along the journey as well.
Wandering Pokémon, like the Lati duo or the Lake Guardians. I think the gen 8 DLC actually did a great job with the Galarian legendary birds. More of that please.
A side mission for some random legendary would also be cool. Like you hear people going around "Did you see it? It flew so fast! I think it went that way."
As you'd go to that direction, you'd find more hints and eventually the legendary Pokémon itself.
Or maybe you'd read a book or something, that *isn't* a part of the main story, and only then you could get access to a puzzle that reveals the legendary.
Of course, they should only be available late-game.
Another interesting idea could be similar to Nebby, having a Pokémon follow you around, and it turns out to be a legendary later on. Though it should be much more subtle.
Finally, the games *could* have a downloadable mythical, but it should have some sort of event in game, just like Mew and Celebi had.
Yes, this comment is literially what the video was about, lol.

Gen 3 introduced as many new legendaries as the entire series had to this point. Was that too many? Yes. That was literally enough legends for the entire franchise.
Sinnoh introduced half again as many new ones as Hoenn had. Was this overwhelming? Yes, we now had too many for even a game with a thousand monsters in it.
Further, now that legendaries kept becoming increasingly mandatory interactions for the game's main plot, something literally only Hoenn actually did arguably _well_ , their nature as elusive and not even confirmed to really exist is shaken off turning them into literally just rare and powerful Pokemon. Most sets of legendaries are also pretty redundant - either three/four things that are extremely similar in concept, appearance and abilities to each other within their set, or three/four things that are redundant to an entire preceding set.

The problem is you don’t feel that they are legendary. Yes the over saturation of Pokémon is part to blame. Any Pokémon that comes out is greet with a sarcastic “o boy another one”.
But these are suppose to be untaimable beasts of the realm. That’s why capturing them was so epic. Even though it was also at the end of the game and gave us no use for them.
Beasts that are at their peak of strength. So giving it evolutions does ruin that feeling.
They are suppose to be epic catalysts of the story. Groupon and Kyoger literally changing the terrain is the best example of this. So I agree with the lore and effort points.
I’m not saying all the legendaries past the first couple generations are bad. But the more you treat them like normal Pokémon, the more they feel like normal Pokémon.

Which is kinda why the terminology always bothered me. A myth and a legend are both stories of some kind. It’d make more sense if it was Historical vs Fabeled. Ya know?

It's still part of the story and I feel they are handed out way too easily, especially lake trio, heatran, cresselia. Only good encounter would be with Manaphy. It literally feels like quest and you need to explore about legend.

I do still think there are a bit too many legendaries (perhaps let’s aim to make them 5% of the total pokemon so GF can focus on giving them a proper lore/introduction/quest) but I definitely agree that they’re being handled quite poorly nowadays

This is a great analysis. I think what happened is that they realized or decided relatively early on that pokemon was never going to be a SERIOUS rpg. It’s a great competitive metagame, but the actual games and franchise overall are clearly designed to entrap children and get parents to spend a lot of money. Older fans need to implement nuzlockes or play straight up mods to have any real fun nowadays.
At the inception of Pokémon I think there were possibly grandiose ideas that it could potentially be a deep and lore-rich series, which is reflected in the treatment of legendary Pokémon as you pointed out. Now, there’s really no point in investing heavily into mystical lore because it’s just not that kind of a franchise. It’s not that deep. Just recycle the formula and keep raking in money. Sprinkle the taste of “legendary” by essentially giving away the legendary Pokémon and it’s easy to capture an impressionable child’s mind.

So I want to talk about Koraidon and Miraidon for a moment. Now while I don’t know for sure, and frankly until I play Gen 9 myself, it seems like Koraidon and Miraidon are not as “Legendary” in the sense that they might not have to hide their existence from the Paldea region. The recent trailer made it seem like you going to team up with a box legend pretty early into your adventure with them acting as your ride Pokémon. Now while I’m sure you get the chance to catch them later, they are essentially your traveling companion until they feel that you are ready to challenge them. I also feel like Koraidon and Miraidon are maybe more similar to the Legendary birds in the sense that they are not necessarily integral to the lore of the Paldea region and perhaps people know of their existence and just choose to let them alone do them being extremely powerful or if nothing else challenging them as a rite of passage on the journey to become strong trainers. It could also be the Koraidon is protected by Prof. Sada and Miraidon is protected by Prof. Turo who team you two together in an effort to see how the Legends interact with a human partner.
Either way, having these Pokémon not be a big deal actually feels okay for once. It may actually help to create a more wholesome story with these Legends especially if get opportunities to bond with them in certain locations.

Yes, gen 9's legendaries is going to be interesting because you are actually bonding with the legendaries throughout the game instead of like older gens where you are handed the legendaries as the reward for beating the game. It is a very interesting approach and I really like it.

It's crazy, I somehow thought of this reasoning back in Gens 6 & 7 (at least the free hand-outs part), but completely forgot that it was such a big issue.

In gen 5, Volcarona felt more legendary than ANY other pokemon in that region!
But I think another thing that added to the lack of reverence for legendary pokemon is when they became the box art monsters. In Gen 1, the starters were the box art. So you just knew you were going on an adventure with one of them. The legendary pokemon were a complete optional mystery that you had to uncover! They were involved in the story of the game, but not the main focus of the villain. They were still treated that way in Gen 2, despite the boxes now sporting Lugia & Ho-oh instead of Feraligatr & Typhlosion. And since Gen 2, legendaries have been the box art monsters. And since those are the monsters the story centers on, then they create even MORE legendaries to make side quests for. I propose the starters be given their places back on the box art. That would lessen the foreknowledge of these Legends, making them feel more mythic. Also, with the starters resuming their roles on the box art, then the Legends of each Gen wouldn't have to come in nearly-identical pairs, making it nearly impossible for someone to catch all of them unless they buy both or have friends willing to give theirs up. If you went back and redid the box art of each Gen, but with the starters, how do you think they would look.
