Boss have kindly sent me a GT-1000 to check out. It has a lot to live up to! Namely, their own legacy, but also the competition. So, how does it fare on its first day at the house of Burgs? Watch and see...
Today's tools:
Guitar: 2016 Ernie Ball Albert Lee SSS - Stock
Mic: Samson Airline77 (me)
Camera: Canon 60D (me) and Nikon D5100 (GT-1000)
Soundcard: AVID Mbox Pro 3
Computer: Apple iMac 27" i7 3.4 GHz 16 GB RAM
Software: Logic Pro X, Waves L3-16 on output channel for soft limiting, Apple Final Cut Pro X (video editing and UA-cam compression).
you've changed my whole outlook on this unit ....Boss should take that video and pass it to their PR department :-)
I LOVE this board everything sounds so real and better!! Has a very tactile feel and just feels and sounds amazing!
Nice tones, once again. Good luck with the Ross Wilson gig... so many memories just hearing his name :)
Yes!! I knew you could do this unit justice, Brett! If I was a manufacturer, I would have you on speed-dial for any new product launch.
Great demo! Have the GT100. This one is definitely...more. Cheers!
Some great tones and playing there 💪🏼🎸👍🏼
Brilliant just Brilliant could listen to this all day everyday
Without doubt this is the most informative review of the Boss GT 1000 on the net. Well done Brett. As for the GT 1000 I purchased mine a couple of months ago & like you I am delighted with the purchase. I actually went into my music store to purchase the Helix. The guy in the store basically said, I have heard you play & I honestly think you will be happier with the GT 1000. Well I personally could not be more satisfied with the product. Awesome review Brett, thank you.
Oh man that guitar sounds great! :)
Well, that was cool! What a contender.
Nice review and demo, thanks
Wow, this sounds really good
Ross Wilson!! Man, kudos for getting that gig. The guy's not just a legend. He's a genius.
Awesome video!!!!
excellent demo
Cheers , great demo
Man the preset 1-3 has such tight rich low end integrity... I LOVE it... mine is on the way:)
This sounds mind blowing! Great job!
Well, well... Brett, not only is this the video in which the GT-1000 sounds the best (and I've watched many), it's also the only video in which the unit has sounded great. Until this video I had been underwhelmed by what I've heard. Now? Cripes, I may have to open my wallet. Damn it.
The First tone.. WOW!
hi brett!you makes part of my lif with your guitar solos on james reyne, god bless u
Damn, that thing sounds fantastic.
Thank you for this wonderful presentation ! Your wonderful performance made it a wonderful presentation.
Great sound !like+++
Nice demo
Hey Brett, great demo. I really love the distortion sound you played on the beginning of this VDO. Do you mind sharing Preamp type, Preamp parameter, speaker type and mic setting?
อ๊ะๆ ตาวิเศษเห็นนะ
Very good!!!
Endless 🤘🏾 only if it’s a tad smaller but can be slightly bigger than its core model and with 3 FS + 1 control + Vol/Wah pedal 😬🤘🏾😆
hi Brett! i heard that this had the newer RV 500 DD500 and MD500 built in.. Is that misleading or are they literally the same all in this one box?
Tone wise, how would you rank this goober to the tone of the Helix and Headrush? You are making me take another look at it. It is interesting that all of the Boss effects are available and in the print review, you liked the stock IR's.
I've been looking at demos of this for a while and you did great man thank you! You showed me that I really do want this thing. I'm curious It's Going direct correct? Not an amplifier.
The thing sounds GREAT to me, better than any modler I've ever heard. The distortion on the Line 6 Helix is brittle and scratchy sounding, imo. And it's MORE $$$!
Good demo, I am over 50 also and have been on the fence about getting another Multi-FX since I sold the G-System. This might be just the ticket with some of my own pedals and in 4CM with my amp. But also good to use as an all in one unit. Do you plan on doing a 4CM demo of this?
hi great sounds, i read what you were playing thru but are they powered speakers?how is the sound i hear?.when you get it home it seems to never sound like what it does when someones testing it?didnt know if there was any magic happening some how
Can simulat marshall jubilee amp sound with this unit?? Im in love with amplitube4 slash.. what unit can simulat amp like amplitube slash??
Does the expression pedal turn on the wah fx like the boss gt10 and gt100 does?
Ya know...You, Glenn DeLaune and Pete Thorn are the ONLY guys I listen to about ANYTHING. Great players and you really understand how to use what you have. I am a fan of many of the items you have done here on youtube. WANTED TO SAY THANK YOU FOR THE PROFESSIONAL VIDEOS Brett Kingman. I mean, what's a pro supposed to be anyway, someone who can rag or brag on gear OR someone that can use their knowledge to demonstrate what the gear is truly capable of and what it can't do. DOUBTED THIS PIECE OF GEAR (though on my wish list). You show some of it's rich spots in a short time. I do wish you would say what you were playing through....your programs straight to monitors?
Sounds great. I am a big BOSS fan.
But a lot of the the presets sound like the older COSMO presets to my ears. I would have to try one in person I guess. Great video😎
I've seen you do the Headrush pedalboard as well. Which to my ear sounded realistic. If you had to do a live show which I do a lot, which one would you lead me to? Both units are great thanks and TC
Looks like the Tone Central's presets are based on GT-100, not the GT-1000?
Dear Brett, very nice demo. To what are the xlr’s going?
Good video. Brett can play very well, superb Ernie Ball guitar. The preset itself sounds alone nicely, but in the band?
Are you going through your computer to monitors or using frfr cabs.
Hey sir. How do you plug the pedal into the computer?
Love mine....!!!!
Sorry I know this is probably a really dumb question, but would I be able to plug the GT 1000 directly into say for example 2x12 speakers and produce sound or do I need to plug it into a power amp connected to speakers to get sounds?
You need some kind of Power Amp.
also. can this unit be used as an interface? or do you need a separate one to go through your pc?
Did you find your answer?
GT-10 and GT-100 work as interfaces, so I guess this does too.
Have you compared between this GT1000 and GT10? The reason why I'm asking is because I have a GT10. I'm pretty good on my pedal and I can adjust anything to make my GT-10 sound like a real amp. So, if my GT-10 is already good like real amp, then how good is GT-1000, especially, it's about $1k? Thx.
How are the Amp models compared to Axe Ax8?
SOOOOO finally somebody made a comprehensive video demo of the GT1000 for "REAL PLAYERS" other than playing presets and showing connection options. And it had to be you Brett. Great demo , as always, and really helpful.
From this video now I see what I wanted to know (not even the manual is so clear about this), and it looks like essentially you can use this Multifx as individual stompboxes by assigning different FX to each footswitch and calling them in or out whenever you need them, sort of a regular FX pedalboard. That to me is a plus, presets are helpful when you know before hand what you are going to use in a gig, but when you have occasional ones and there is no time to program then it feels like presets are in your way. That is why the "perform/play/stompbox" mode is much an advantage. Line 6 had that on their PODs, but I never liked their sounds and FX parameters accessibility. I've been using a ME80 and never wanted to go with the GT series just because how inconspicuous them seem to be at changing or modifying FX on the fly. I'm kind of old style regarding that, still I owed the Line 6 pod XT and X3 but ended selling them, and never regretted.
Just couple of questions: how many switches can be assigned to an individual FX? All ten? And, can you save a group of assigned switches-FX as a preset but still work as play mode, sort of a scene in a Line 6 M series?
Again, thanks for your valuable contribution to the gigging musicians community, and have a great gig.
Hey Brett great video I currently have the 100 my question is does this model have a doubler effect?
Not familiar with the gt100, but an old trick from the 80s was to have a stereo delay with only 1 repeat at about 10-30 milliseconds to give a double tracked effect
I bought a gt 10, it is cool enough but there are many things that suck, I am thinking that for %60 more I could have bought gt 100, but I didn't.
0:33 I love that clean sound, I am filling some presets with chorus, delay and reverb just like that one.
Haha Brett...great timing! I just spent 2+ hours with the GT1000 in-store, just going through all the presets. Disclaimer: I have owned every major Boss MFX device since the GT-6, including the GT-8, GT10 and currently the GT100. Last year I grabbed an AX8 and thought I was done. Hmmm...
Gotta say I was pretty impressed with this new GT1000. Indeed, it felt more "analog" and dynamic than any previous Boss MFX, even over my all time fave the GT8. My wallet hates me but I am pretty sure I'm gonna grab this puppy soon. :P :)
One thing people with no experience with these Boss MFX devices totally need to be aware of: IMO, the vast majority of the presets are "unusable". 250+ presets and I loved only about a dozen or so. HOWEVER, this is common to Boss MFX units IME - think of the the presets as simply what CAN be done, in often a very over the top, crazy fashion. But these Boss devices [and most all high line MFX units] absolutely require people to deep dive and edit those presets to arrive at stuff that sounds great and is usuable. The depth of control here in the GT1000 is the most ever from Boss I think, but the best part is that it has never been easier or clearer to navigate the GUI. Totally logical and graphical signal chain.
Sonically, I think I still prefer my beloved AX8 but man, I got a sneaking suspicion this GT1000, given the right tuning on my part, could be killer. Built like a tank as well.
Great observations Brett! cheers and look forward to more from you on this little beast!
had the gt6. hated it with a passion
+David: Well, fair enough :) Especially considered to what's available nowadays. Let me ask you though - did you have the GT6 back in the day when it was "new" or years after it was released?
While it certainly can't compare to the Boss stuff that came after it, I have some relatively fond memories of the GT6, at least in terms of being able to dial in some tones I liked.
Actually, I think I still got it lying around someplace, in a box somewhere. :P :D
I had it a couple of weeks after it came out. Had the GT5 prior to that, liked it better. Tried the GT-8, Pro, GT10 and GT100. Couldn't care for them. Had a bunch of other multis as well, both floor and rack mounted [Digitech RP's, 2112, 2120, Korg stuff, Zoom - own the MS70CDR, cool stuff in it - and TC Electronic G-Force].
Recently sold a 2112 to finance for another G-Force. I miss that one. Cool for synths
+David: Nice, so you're an old hand with this stuff :) Yeah, a few of the Boss MFX over the years have been quite hit or miss for me as well, though for this bedroom player, they're all good enough. Definitely the modulation and delay effects are usually great, but as always, that OD/drive/high gain stuff can be spotty for Boss. Still, for me I can get nice, fat, usuable tones. This new one did sound "better" to me during the 2+ hours I messed with it in store [through a very clean Tweed amp].
TC Electronics G-Force! Man I always wanted to get my hands on that one, being a huge TC fan from back in the day [Alex Lifeson lover]. Good one man!
cheers!
you can get a G-Force for 400 Euros or less these days. Great flexibility routings. Another fun 2nd hand unit is the Korg MR8000R series. The chorus is to die for on those.
Cheers
I confess that I did not access the system settings. In fact, I never opened the manual, which is my standard practice with gear, unless absolutely necessary. That said, the fact that the unit sounded the same though headphones and through my studio monitors seems odd. Are you saying that selecting "LINE/PHONES" or "RECORDING" was the cause my negative experience with the audio quality? If so, I apologize to Boss. (I have a Boss Katana 50 combo that I use for at home practice and it sounds very good.)
BOSS GT1000 has a noise gate system for OVER DRIVE EFFECTS with guitars of singles pickups?
you can download the tone studio for gt1000 from boss website. in the software all the blocks can be seen.
Played one at GC, thot it sounded purty good. But, not worth $1k; maybe $500. But, I must say it sounds really GOOD when you play it.
Brett been waiting for your demo and eval. One thing I hear a lot about is the no-delay patch switching. What do you think?
I think that's spot on. It is extremely fast. Quite possibly the fastest in its class.
show all of the different amp simulations tones you can get from it burgs...that would be a cool video
Yep, I can do that in the not-too distant future.
Should I get a Boss GT-1000 or the new Axe FM3 which I'm on the waiting list for ...ever? Or maybe a AA Amplifire 12?
@@sandrobiffa1428 ????
Hi do do you have to have speaker monitors to use the computer software or use uour own amp?
You can use any, all, none or one of the above - or headphones! Your choice. Plenty of options.
Quick question?
In this demo, we are actually listening to you monitor speakers, correct? How will you use it live? Into an amp or direct to a board?
tommc49 Not correct. You are listening to a direct feed to Logic via my sound card which is an Mbox Pro. Live it will go direct to the desk and back through full range monitors placed in front of me.
Thanks for the clarification. I'm old and not current with the technology.
this one or amplifire ?
That stereo delay!! Come said the boy - patch nailed.
Haha. Yes! That's what I was thinking ... hoping!
Where's the gig?
Oakleigh Bowling Club. Saturday night.
Nice! Might have to come for a drive from near Canberra
Sounds good, but just a little sterile. It's just missing something, which was why I took mine back.
Thanks Brett, I always enjoy your videos BUT, the NAMM release of this pedal was nothing short of horrific!!!!!!!! I'm a boss fan and was waiting on the successor of the GT-100 so you can imagine my excitement when I heard the 1000 was out. After watching those marketing guys; which I'm sure are good fellows, talk about AIRD technology over and over and then to hear the patches they created sound like, I don't know, NOT GOOD AT ALL! Since then I've heard some pretty good videos of this unit but I just can't get over the initial launch. You did it justice, maybe they should have hired you from the beginning. LOL! Thanks again, Brett.
You're right, Jeffrey, that initial launch did not go well for them. But they pulled it together in the end and I can attest to its charms now - I've been using one live for 6 months or so and it's been great! Hell, it's no Axe-FX of course, but it offers a dozen or so great amp/cab sims, pretty much every Boss pedal ever made and it sounds good. That's enough for me!
Maybe I will give it another chance. Much appreciated, Brett!
❤❤❤
We need Kingman presets!!
Mmm This thing sounds pretty good overall but seems to have a relatively high learning curve to know it inside and out. Probably good if you get some younger guy to set it up for you and set and forget. For many older guys there will always be a market for stand alone pedals. And man is this thing expensive you'd really need a good reason to get one!
Neil Aspinall that's why you buy the Headrush.
I would imagine the learning curve is not at all steep. The software seems essentially the same as for the GT-1, with a couple of added features of course (dual amps, etc.). I learned how to use the Boss Tone Studio in about 5 minutes. And, sadly, I'm not a 'younger guy'... I'm in my mid-fifties, so if I can learn, chances are you can, too. :-)
Neil Aspinall I am 1 of those older guys that agrees with you. Just give me my stomp boxes.
no metal ryhtm without reverb mister nice boss?
Hey Brett. I watched this video with a lot of interest as I purchased a GT1000. The sounds you've created are great and you mentioned you were going to use yours at a gig with Ross Wilson. Did you end up using the GT1000 at that gig? How did it go? A followup would be great. . Keep up the great reviews.
Hi Mike. I did use it and have continued to use it with Ross. It's everything I need for that gig and I can throw it in a backpack and travel anywhere with it. I like it a lot. Cheers and thanks for the kind words.
Thanks for the reply Brett.Just one more question.. Did you use the xlr outs to a pa system? or how was it connected. Sorry for the questions..
No problems. Yes I run the sub-outs (XLRs) to the desk. They give me a 12" monitor of some description. Some are better than others but if they're terrible I use a CLR.
thanks again.
What is the difference between the gt 1000 and the gt 100???😎
HEY BRETT! ross wilson wrote touch of paradise right?
Yes, Ben. That's correct.
UPDATE - After buying one of these units online and trying it out in my home studio today connected to my mixing board and using pro level near-field monitors, the GT-1000 sounds nothing like what I heard in the demos I listened to before buying. There are uncontrollable EQ issues, both high and low end, that makes this unit not useable for my purposes. The high end is like the worst piezo sound you've heard turned up several unpleasant notches. This ultra super treble tone seems to exist on most presets. There's also a muffled low end to many, if not most, patches. Also, there are numerous volume control issues - volume pedal, unit mix level, patch level, fader level on my mixer, monitor level and guitar volume knob -which are absolutely maddening when switching between patches! I was so hoping that the GT-1000 would provide some really useable sounds (ambient, clean, acoustic and distorted/overdriven) for recording, but that was not my experience, unfortunately. I'm shipping it back tomorrow. NOTE - I did not try this through any of my tube amps. I already have a pro-level pedalboard consisting of very nice individual pedals. I only purchased this for DIRECT RECORDING purposes which it failed at.
Just wondering if you have set the output to match your system or amp type? Changed the cabs, mikes, pre amps...the list goes on. You need to go deep into the unit to get the best sounds out of it...Also forget the presets they are just a starting/demo point. I never use them. What do you think about the sounds here?.ua-cam.com/video/JzFSiBSdmd4/v-deo.html
I did set the unit's output into my mixer. On many patches I tried tweaking the EQ, gain, patch volume, etc., and still couldn't achieve the sounds shown in this video or the video you attached. I did adjust the faders to the two channels I was using, along with the channel input trim levels. Perhaps the unit I received is defective?
So you went into the system settings and selected "LINE/PHONES" or "RECORDING" from the MAIN OUT list?
if you play metal I have a preset good for my direct recordings (rythm metal) with helix lt (less expensive than bos gt 1000) and better than all I heard in vodeos , demos or else.
I was a little horrified after playing through some of the presets, for the same reason. I don’t think it’s an issue with the way the unit itself handles overdriven signals though; it seems to be specific distortion models that have that weird harshness. as long as I stayed away from the MDP presets (or whatever that acronym is), and away from the X-whatever distortions, everything sounded really good.
of course I could be oversimplifying that. I’ve only had the thing for about 5 hours now. 😆
after taking a deep breath and actually working on some of my own patches, this thing is awesome.
Lets get a real comparison with a conclusion without regard to the builder about who has the best amp/effects modeler available
Oh my! 1:29
Sounding good dude. But why does everyone seem to use Logic? Plug the darn thing into an amp. Plugging it into a computer is not the same.
To me, the GT-1000 sounds better than the Line 6 Helix and the Headrush pedalboard. Some of the pitch shifted presets are really cool sounding. For strictly modeling actual amps, the Fractal AX8 (or whatever model is current) and the Kempler sound the most accurate. I'm getting a GT-1000 specifically for "direct recording" in my small home studio. It seems to sound well through amps too, but I already have a really nice pedalboard with excellent individual pedals.
kemper not" kempler". better thna helix i nrythms metal ? ok let's hear a rythm metal direct recording (naked without anything else or fucking cover) if it is, I buy it now!
I think I might agree... Although Headrush has a more modern and practical display.
Better than Line6 Helix?
You must be joking!
Me too, i found this one the best sounding. Do you know if it has polyphonic pitchshifting like the POG?
@@zweex3463 rhythm not 'nrythms' than not 'thna' First you need learn to write and then correct others
Please show the output options. Can it f.i. send pedals out to amp input, and send pedal+amp out separately AND pedals+amp+cab to FOH, while still sending pedals or pedals+ amp out separately ;-)
Man, there's a ton of them and it would take some time - which I don't have a lot of, unfortunately. Check out Pg.2 of the manual for an illustrated diagram of the options. static.roland.com/assets/media/pdf/GT-1000_eng02_W.pdf
32-bit floating-point processor and 96 kHz sampling rate !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Super!!!!!!!
When viewing audio stuff for guitars (or anything else) it helps to use decent sound speakers, whether it be blue tooth, or other cabled monitors.
To evaluate this on weedy computer speakers or headphones, not only does yourself an injustice, it does the same to the manufacturers.
I'm sure that I am the only guitarist in the world that played an important gig that had a sound malfunction due to multiple stomp boxes interconnected,,,,,,,,,,NOT!!!
I'm probably also the only one who have had them get banged up in travel, loading, unloading, and sound checks, and screwed up connection to power sources.
It looks like an evaluation at a music store is in order.
For 1K dollars, it better be good. Much agreed with getting a young techie to help me set up and store tones for use.
Great video on quick overview. Thanks.
This is the best sounding tutorial I have heard yet .I still wont buy by because there is nothing usable out of the box and you cant easy put pedal chains together with a tap like you are are able to do with the Helix..Also I could find any good cleans. I believe this is a great unit but not $1, 000 dollars great more like $499 great.. If you already have a a grand to blow just hold out 200 more or so and get a Helix. .I go to Guitar Center 3 times a week and the shelf is full they cleary are not moving like hotcakes thats for sure.
I totally agree
@Sixfoursoul I totally agree. If this unit was $500 or so then it could win the market. Especially if it was actually good (unlike old Boss pedals IMO). For 1k it almost enters the price-point of Fractal Ax8 (or L6 Helix). This won't work with Boss' reputation of building mediocre pedals...
I'm guessing, these pedals will pop up used for 1/4 of their price in the future (that's the case w/ old GT models). Unless, the unit is really good.
Come on guys! The Helix is 2.5k, AX8 is 2k (if you can even get one these days, after waiting months and months) the Headrush 1.5k - the GT1000 just over 1k! Price point? Make it a level playing field in terms of cost for these units, then you can maybe you can judge fairly..!
I'll stick with the Gt-100. No idea why they shrunk it so much.. Those buttons are so crammed. The amps, speakers, etc are all useless to me as I already run through a ultra clean tube amp and v30 speakers, which is the only way any of these types of units sound good in the first place imo. I might see the use for it if it was the only gear I had maybe. Still doubt it.
@Sideoutside As a high-end tube user I don't agree. Fractal stuff (Ax8) sounds totally legit without an amp.
Most Videos i have seen throw a negative light on the GT-1000, but here it sounds rather good.
It seems to be very responsive to pick attack and dynamic playing ..
It's a good unit. There are some great amp sims in there and it's pretty darned dynamic. Then there's the full gamut of Boss effects ... just about every stompbox they ever made. It's pretty great, really.
Thank you Brett! Have a nice day and gig ;)
I dunno man, all the amps sound pretty much the same with different fx :/
Music Islife ... You know, I feel ya. I stopped using digital modeling because when you strip away the effects, what you're left with is "ehhhh...."
Only problem with this unit is, you can't use it live. There are not nearly enough buttons to make that work. You need 10 rig buttons and at LEAST 5 FX buttons to turn ON/OFF FX in any one patch. So if you have to use a Ground Control to run the GT, then you have to haul too much hardware.
Will they ever make these things for jazz/country/pop players? They seem all set for shredders. Crappy
There are some great clean amps, compressors, modulation effects, reverbs in there - everything you'd need for any of those styles.
I have a friend that played guitar for a major country headliner for 15 years and plays a Boss Gt-100 direct into a board no amp
Patch name: General Tele ... uses a strat style guitar to demo! Who gives a shit, it sounds freaking awesome!! LOL!!
To me it sounds like any other Boss GT series multieffect. Fractal and Kemper still miles ahead
Renner Gutierre 😂
Yea,they all sound exactly the same, like crap !! Fractal is way ahead of the game!!
I agre x1000.. compared to an AX8 any Boss GT is just a bad joke.
@cisum yalp I Seriously? GT1000 is $1000...it's certainly not a budget device. Ax8 isn't much more (especially in the US).
@@RabianskiT Try like double the price!
Boss reverbs & delays just do NOT have the sweet / glassy / quality sounds of Strymon / TC / Line 6. They have been left behind .....
That's according to your ears..!
1th!
tony oops
Goldy Heels says : Nice Publication !! ua-cam.com/video/EmspFW71HEM/v-deo.html
Sounds completely digital. For that money purchase a good interface and get TH-U with their amp match library. Thats what I call high quality, not that 800eur device crap
settle down Beavis
I used the Boss GT-1000 and absolutely hated it. Over priced and ineffective, sorry not sorry Boss.
hello, what do you use for multi-fx now? I am planning to get one.
@@tarkgundogdu8940 Depending on your budget and your guitar sound that you are trying to achieve, I recommend the Helix or the Headrush. I personally prefer the Headrush because I like the sound I get from the '85 Mesa Boogie head and cabinet inside the Headrush. The Helix is also great for guitar if you want more of a modern metal guitar sound. I hope this helps and best wishes on finding your desired guitar rig. Definitely stay away from the Boss GT-1000, I thought it was terrible and nowhere near worth the $1000 price tag.
always too much reverb.
Never!
Don’t listen, move along!
Sound is ok(average), looks cheap, editor looks mediocre at best. I expected better from BOSS, Line 6 Helix is way ahead of this...
DAAAAAMN !! That’s one ugly ass guitar. Sorry.
It's the poo axe!
