For the people that doesn’t know Grant Stone is an American company making high quality boots with American, Italian (and other countries) materials assembled in China. Thats why you get an $800 pair of boots for half the price, if they were made here in the states you’ll be paying $700-$800 for a pair easily.
I'll pay the $700-$800 price tag for American made boots. Grant Stone is not an American company. They are venture capitalists that have a company name based in America that outsource jobs to China.
No they wouldnt be 700-800. They'd be like 500. There's plenty of American companies with exact same quality materials as grant stone for 500 bucks. For example Truman.
Grant Stone is a chinese company made in China. To be an American company you need to make your product in America... For 399$ you can get a Truman rough out boot made in USA...with better materials. Grant Stone is probably ripping its customers off with its inflated pricing.
I've got the Grant Stone Ottawa, Red Wing, Whites, and Thorogood moc toes. I honestly love them all. The 8" safety toe Thorogood is my go-to work boot. Crazy comfortable, durable, longlasting, and good looking. Yard work, hiking, camping, meeting the guys for beers at the local watering hole: Red Wings. Just *the* classic Americana boot. This is the boot the others are imitating. Period. Everything else, anything a little nicer, I usually go with the GS Ottawa boot. My Whites getting worn the least. Rarely, honestly. Any time I'm likely to wear them, I'm just more likely to grab the RWs. Nothing wrong with the Whites. They are great boots. I just usually grab the RWs.
Very nice! I was close to picking up a pair of Whites recently. I'm glad I saw your comment before I pulled the trigger. My Red Wings are my go-to moc toes these days too.
Great review sir! I have never heard of the Nomad but it looks great. I might have to grab a pair. And I agree about the forest green. Both great daily drivers, but I’m sure you will agree with me that there is a major step up in leather quality when comparing them to Grant Stone or Red Wing. I have two RW iron rangers and they are absolutely incredible.
I'm an avid high end boot collector and I would rather have a pair of Grant Stone than any American made boot. Their QC and craftmanship is better by a mile.
Grant stones Leo last is hand down the best fit for me. I find thursdays too narrow and just started on a nice pair of devier nomads, they are very very comfy with a nice chunky shape as well. Great vid!
Those Thursdays have me second guessing the Red Wings not gonna lie. For the price they look like an amazing value, and are sleek yet still rugged. I'm curious how the poron insole will break down over time compared to the leather insole
Yeah, I got my fist pair of boots from Thursday Boot and I too had to send them back because I downsized one-half size as they recommended. No biggie! I found the Captains ran true to size - at least for me. I've been eyeing the Diplomat and just ordered a pair since I need more of a casual, vice functional, work boot.
I just bought 2 pair of Dievier Prospects. They're so comfortable. I've never had a comfortable pair of red wings. I don't mess with red wings anymore😤

The last two are the best two. I do believe the Grant Stone is a great value, you're getting quite a bang for the buck. It might be worth noting, it appears to be a false moc toe, but so is the Alden Indy for that matter. If I could only own one, it would be the Red Wing for sure. If I wanted something a little dressier with a lugged sole right off the bat, I thing I'd go for a Parkhurst or Truman offering. I'd choose the Red Wing simply because it simply looks right to my eyes. I expect them to be unlined, I like their leather options quite a bit. I will say, after surfing UA-cam, I am open to the idea of having a Classic Moc resoled to something other than another wedge sole. They convert nicely, couldn't imagine doing that to a brand new pair. So, my nod goes to the RW, I prefer a more casual moc I suppose.
I’m one of the owner of that Thursday Diplomat and i really love it. The only one I don’t like about it is the the tongue is not gusseted. My 40 dollar Dr. Martens is at least gusseted.
@@StrayReviews i agreed with you. It is an outstanding boot. I have a klik klik klik sound problem on my 1st pair of diplomat after a few week of wearing it everyday. I suspect the shank is the culprit.
Dievier has great bang for the buck. I wear mine two to three days a week. I put in some additional arch support, but they are quite comfortable out of the box. The tread is grippy, and they, unlike the Diplomats, fit my EE foot.
Grantstone has some good sales. I put some money aside to save up for a pair and when I had the amount the pair was on sale for $280. Thursday has that dark olive green that I haven't seen in other companies, just I didn't see their diplomat in that colour. Classic 877 and sawmill Redwing have that slim moc toe, I don't like the clown shapes of the other moc toes. To make my collection complete I just looking towards Russel moccasins.

Good review, appreciate the efforts. I have some GS Diesel boots in the crimson chrome excel and love them, can’t wait for them to completely break in. Red Wing Moc toes can be tough to break-in but if you go with true Brannock size they will probably be too loose after they do break in. I wear an 11 in most non-boots, 10 1/2 Brannock. I took a 10D in both the Iron Ranger and Moc Toe. They were tight in the width at first but have been getting more comfortable with every wear.
Red Wings win. From patina to fit, once they break in, they are like that classic baseball mitt that only gets better with time. Quality, Consistency, Service, and American made no less. God Bless America. Go buy some Red Wings.
Nicks are expensive but if you wait for the sale and know your size you can sometimes get a factory second boot for a couple hundred off...I got one pair for 415$ out the door...and they are absolutely worth the 100 bucks extra over the grant stone... But they are not light or comfortable, more for all day support which I seldom need but don't complain when I need it...
I don’t have the patience or the tolerance for discomfort to break in red wings anymore compared to when I was young, also the fit is just too difficult to get right. Even my moc toes that are broken i don’t find comfortable anymore. After 20 years I’m starting to move on from red wing….
It was a nice video however, your sizing advice on the Brass boot is a little suspect. I wear a size 10D in On Cloud sneakers and Underarmor sneakers. My first pair of Grant Stone boots were the Ottawa's and I bought them in a 9.5D and they were WAY too big. The width was perfect but the length was not. I had a ton of room in the front. I emailed GS and told them that my Thursday Captains were a 9.5D and I felt like these Ottawa's were too big and they were. They told me to try a size 9D and I did and they fit perfectly. That's an entire size down from sneaker size and my brannock was a 10.25D. The Brass boot has more room in the toes so I would recommend going a full size down because I have now purchased 3 pairs of GS, all on the Leo lasts all in the same size. The Flyod last is bigger and I have not purchased a Brass boot but I intend to sometime in the future. I now have the Crimson CXL Ottawa's, Dune Diesel's and Black CXL Diesel's with a leather sole and they are the best boots I have ever bought and I have 3 pairs of Thursday's that I bought late last year.
I also have a pair of Dune Deisels and they're amazing. I'm a Brannock 10 and took both of my Grant Stones in 9.5. I would say that they're roomy but not too big on me. But, I like my boots roomy and often wear thick wool socks in winter. I could see why some people would prefer to go a full size down.
On's and Under Armor are exceptionally narrow so it could be that you're naturally compensating for the discrepancy being that they are closer to a C width as apposed to the grant stones being closer to a E width and the Thurday's being closer to a D width, every width change up accounts for about a .5 size down in overall size as a general last rule.
That's consistent with my experience but with the brass boots. I got size 9.5D and they were too big. Now waiting for my 9D replacement to arrive and hopefully the fit will be right
I wear a 1/2 down in almost all quality boots. Truman boots are true to size for me. The Brass boot is too short going a full size down and at a 1/2 size down the length is a little long. I ended up just putting thinner inserts in them and they are fine. Would have been interesting to try an 11E instead of the 11.5D I bought. Am a true 12D.
My Dievier boots had quality control issues and I found the leather to be thin. A lot thinner than a Red Wing and that’s why they didn’t need breaking in. Thursdays are more comfortable, but that pouron insole will wear down and it’s not replaceable. Grant Stone and Red Wing have better leather and will last longer. I also hate how Dievier and Thursday pander to the boot UA-camrs. Thursdays are fine, but I can’t stand influencers telling me that they’re a better quality than a Red Wing, Grant Stone or any other PNW boot brand. Total lie.
Keen observation! Research says that people get bored if the image doesn't change every few seconds. Since I don't have a second camera to help with that, I just flip the image.
I believe Rusell is the last true moc toe made in America (where the upper's leather wraps around the bottom.) But there are other made in the U.S. moc toes where the stitching at the toe connects two pieces of leather (like Red Wing).
From a construction and durability standpoint I prefer the RW. Thorogoods leather tumbling process and construction makes them more comfortable, especially straight out of the box. Carolina AMP USA basically managed to combine the drawbacks of both for a little less money than either. I've heard mixed reviews on their recent product. Those were generally the boots of choice in my former trade. I wore RW Steel Toes at work and Thorogood Soft Toes kicking around the farm. Completely happy with both for that application.
"True to size" is a very tricky thing, people. For example, it's common knowledge that snickers have different sizes than dress shoes. And boots are no exception from this as well. Take my case: I wear 13 size in snickers, 12 size in dress shoes and boots' sizes run even smaller! So saying "true to size" is not a correct way to describe how well the boots fit. You need to know true to which size it is: sneakers, dress shoes, or boots you have.
I think mainly because the materials Grant Stone uses are excellent. It’s all American made leather, rubber, etc. It’s superior to the materials in the other three boots.
@@StrayReviews I understand they may feel good. And they are fine for a job site. But for casual wear, I'd prefer to have a different, more classic outsole.
White's Fulton. They were $255 over Father's Day. Back up to $340 now. They come with the Vibram Honey though, not sure how you will feel about the color. I think they look awesome with the Brown Distress. If you order a set make sure you talk about sizing. PNW Boots can run pretty large (I'm an 11E standing on a Brannock and wear 9.5EE in a Frank's 1977 Last #4 Toe). Most need to downsize 0.5 - 1.0 sizes in a typical PNW Boot.
With all due respect, Rose Anvil has boot comparisons locked down. You do know that he literally cuts the boots in half. Then looks at the leather etc.
I find the Jaimvada (Japan) boots available through Baker for $399.95 to be very similar in quality of materials and construction if you have issues with the source of origin. The NWP bootmakers are making some nice budget boots in the $300 - 400 range. White's had a bunch of Moc Toes on sale over Father's Day in the $250-270 range and those are real step up from RW in my opinion. I almost bought a set of White's Fulton for $255 in Distressed Brown with Vibram Honeys but I stole a set of mismatched custon Frank's Ground Pounders (When your feet are 0.375 Size different 0.5 Size is no big deal) for a ridiculously low price (50% Off). The same Russell boot that my Grandfather paid $20 for in the 1950's is $755. In some cases the USA builders have simply priced themselves out of the market. That is about triple the inflation.

sir, those green boots are 🔥
cheers from 🇵🇭
Cheers!
Just picked up an Allen Edmonds moc toe in Teak green.
Nice. I’ll have to check those out.
I've been eyeing them myself. Very nice!
My thursday diplomats ran a half size small
👍👍
Need to do a reviews on PNW boots
I really hope to do that. Taking some time to get there since they’re so expensive.
@@williamswiger7547 I've never owned a pair of Trumans, but I've been eyeballing them for a long time.
Total lie.
For sure Grant Stone and Red Wing win out.
Danner has a nice moc toe boot
Indeed they do. 👍
RW all the way! subscribing//all the best troutbumandsam
Thanks so much! I know I'm going to love the RW once it's broken in a bit more.
why are you changing between the normal and mirror image?
Keen observation! Research says that people get bored if the image doesn't change every few seconds. Since I don't have a second camera to help with that, I just flip the image.
White's perry's ...the best moc toe boots 1000%
Excellent boot! I hope to get my hands on a pair someday and review them.
The Perry "Select" is the better version, but more costly.@@StrayReviews
Isn't rancourt the only real moctoe boot maker in america?
I believe Rusell is the last true moc toe made in America (where the upper's leather wraps around the bottom.) But there are other made in the U.S. moc toes where the stitching at the toe connects two pieces of leather (like Red Wing).
Are danners boots any good?
I’ve only ever owned two pairs of Danners. I’ve been pretty pleased with them once I got the sizing right.
For $300 those wings should be lined! A they look they would kill my feet during break in!
They were a tough break-in but they’re pretty comfortable now.
Wear them and bite your pillow, Sally.
Thorogood is actually the best selling moc toe.
I realy hope to review those sometime.
To me, “true to size” means true to what I am on the Brannock device.
thursday day boots made in Mexico
For sure.
thursday boots... who's who?? who dat??
Can see you reading.
Good catch! I use a teleprompter because I'm afraid I'm going to forget something.
@@StrayReviews You underestimate yourself!
i dont know why anyone would pay the highest price for a chinese boot? crazy!
I think mainly because the materials Grant Stone uses are excellent. It’s all American made leather, rubber, etc. It’s superior to the materials in the other three boots.
You would understand if you wore a pair. Best value boots you can buy.
$400 for China Town? ... THAT'S CRAZY TALK!!
Ridiculous that so many moc toe boots only come with a white (sometimes black) wedge outer sole. Gross.
I didn't care much for them either, until I tried them on. I like the way they feel.
@@gk5891 Wow! That is a huge difference in size. I'll keep that in mind.
Wow - never heard of that model. @@gk5891
With all due respect, Rose Anvil has boot comparisons locked down. You do know that he literally cuts the boots in half. Then looks at the leather etc.
Rose Anvil is awesome! I was super honored when he commented on this video.
Light and Springy. Yuk!
😂
No China boots for me. Merica!
Merica! 👍🇺🇸
Its all overpriced now 10 times
I feel like Red Wing has gone up the most of the four of them.
I'm not willing to pay a premium for boots made in China.
I've heard that a lot from people.
No China made boots for me at all.
I’ve been hearing that from several people.
Grant Stone made in china is a no for me I rather let them made the boot here in the USA and pay the extra cost
$380 and made in china 🥲
GS use USA leather from Horween ChromeXL lather and all the other parts are US they are just crafted in China for cheaper labor cost
I hear there’s some strong feelings around that. I wonder how much they would cost if they were made in America.
I bought rough out leather shoes for $30.00usd 20years ago still going strong, soles are the only thing that needs changing Skechers was good before
I find the Jaimvada (Japan) boots available through Baker for $399.95 to be very similar in quality of materials and construction if you have issues with the source of origin.
The quality of leather GS uses is high quality though. I have some Beckket Simenons made in Columbia that are high quality as well.
