I'm a 14 skipper in Texas. Yes, 14s are single crew boats because nobody likes us enough to crew with us. So we are friendly on shore.

Get your boom out further downwind.

great video, thanks 4 it, get a little more load on the lee bow on downwind in these lighter winds, the sail a little further out. Lighten the stern in such light winds every inch counts. While tacking stay a little longer on the lee side and try to avoid drowning the stern that much as in the first tack. If yo stall, don´t hesitate to back the mainsail. It´s a lovely boat but it wants your attention. ;-)

Hey Joe, is the 14 much different than the 16 regarding traveler position? Noticed about a minute before that first tack how far our it was

I kept it eased all of the time to avoid being overheated

Epic start to the regatta, Joe! Couple tips from the World Champ. || Try sailing with you mainsheet completely eased on the downwinds so that it is hitting the shrouds. || Mast rotation could be pulled in a little bit more (facing the back corner casting) in the light-to-midrange conditions for a little bit of extra power. || If you're trapping consistently, shrouds look like they could come down one more hole. || The 'Flopper-Stopper is a fun name! If the rig is loose then use it to keep the rig forward on the downwinds. || Finally tacking a Hobie 14 will always make and break your race, it's critical to know when you've buggered it up and time to back the rudders/main. Don't be afraid to 'back it' as soon as you've crossed the eye of the breeze. || Check out some quality Hobie 14 from the Australian fleet on Totally Immersed TV @hobieclassaustralia

Man your mast rotation setup needs help lol. Not exactly quick adjustment eh

Pretty much useless - a last minute rig up to hold it in one position.

  • @danielt63

Regarding the tacks... It feels like you are crossing too soon. When single handing without a jib, you don't want to cross until the sail starts to set on the new tack. The idea is to get the (new) windward hull up so it will catch some breeze and help the boat turn.

@6:14 maybe it's just the camera but it looks like your mast is really leaning to leeward

Yeah, i later learned the mast was a bit to loose.

Once again an excellent start! You should include regatta lessons (like Detlef Mohr in Mallorca) in your program. And before the actual season in Europe. BR Olli
