  • I discovered this easy fix after my local Vauxhall garage wanted to charge 1 hour labour (£113) to diagnose why my slow fan speed was not working. This resistor had to be replaced again after 2 years of use.
Temperature display • Vauxhall / Opel quick ...
This was on a Corsa but should be the same for most models.

The only thing this video lacks for me is the explanation why this faulty resistor would cause the fan to be louder. I assume it is because the low setting does not work anymore and it jumps straight to full power because at maximum speed the fan gets the power directly from the battery and does not go through the resistor.
But this is still a good video and you never claimed to talk about the diagnosis. Otherwise the video is as usual perfect. (Quality and everything) Thanks for that.

I am a complete novice at car repairs but I followed your advice and its worked a charm! Thank you very much! The Vauxhall garage had said that it was normal and just the vibration of the motor but I knew it wasn't right!

Do you think that the noise produced by the radiator fan in modern cars is a great problem compared to the engine noise?

  • @BenjaminEsposti

    Wow, fire waiting to happen!
It takes a lot of heat to make a resistor like that burn up! Even the metal resistive element is melted!

Ive had problems with coolant loss and overheating with my 09 insignia. Since replacing water pump, thermostat, header tank and cap i still have a noisy fan. Seems similar to this, only comes on when the gauge starts getting to 100 then comes back down. Could this be anything other than the resistor? Thanks

Just had this with my car changed the 2 temperature sensors fan was still on. Then changed the resistor. Fan was still on. Bought a new thermostat comes complete with housing unit £17.89 of eBay stuck that in myself pure easy 3 bolts. Seems to have done the trick. My fans off. Warning light is off car running like a dream. You also have to top up coolant so buy 2-3 litres as you lose almost all of it when changing the thermostat. X

Hello, I have a question about the fan on a 2001 Corsa C 1.2. I understand that the fan only cuts in at over 100 Celsius. My problem is, if the temp hits that number and the fan kicks in and I turn of the engine, the fan doesn't stay on at all, it stops imediately. Is that normal?! Thank you and sorry to bother you with such a dumb question...

    Hi again,
Today I noticed the loud fan noise again under normal driving conditions. I observed the fan afterwards and I did see it operate at the lower, quiet speed so I'm hoping that it's just a one off or that something has become dirty. I'm going to re check the resistor when I have the chance. If it has broken again, why do you think this could be? I replaced it 5 months ago and it's been fine since then.
    Many thanks.

Hi, I have a 2004 corsa 1.8 Sri, when stationary the temperature rises to around 95 and close to 100 on a hot day then the fan kicks in which is noise similar to the video and it cools back down again to 90. I've recently had the thermostat changed as it was over cooling but it still rose to this temperate when stationary. Could fitting a new resistor solve this?
    Thanks

Thank you for this Video I just need to know 2 things, is this resistor has anything to do with the one Vauxhall recalled? cause since my car been recalled, when I just reach 100mph spanner will come on error P0481 that means high speed fan does not work or engine over heat so I switch the car off and on engine light disappear ,that happens only if I just reach 100mph or if I build my speed with low gear .. OBD2 turns on the fan and it works ,even once my radiator was empty and fan was working in high speed

Hello, I Wonder what controls the T=100 C fan when it turns on in this astra? Apparently the ECU, is there any way to alter this setting for the fan to engage say at 95 C via either the Tech2 or other programe? Its seems pretty high and risky to drive with engine being at this temp, besides your AC will be less efficient.

  • @Michael-dl9wq
    @Michael-dl9wq 8 років тому

Since I have a 1.4 turbo meriva b, I had a situation in which the fan would not engage at all at the 100C. Then it would only engage the fan at around 106 C or higher temp (second higher speed?) and I had to go the service were they did some type of reset so that the low speed fan engages now again at the T=100 C. I am not sure how long will this last, it apears as if there was some reprogramming behind the way the fans are working, or could it be the resistor issue ? I Wonder if they are able to engage the fans, is there an option of setting the switch on temperaturę to a different value in a 2015 meriva? It seems that driving this in warm weather with that type of temp is slightly high.

Does the fan speeds come on at 100c on all single fan Vauxhall’s. I’ve got a 2011 Zafira b but the fan only comes on at 108c what are the temps the speeds come on as my fan is a 3 speed single fan and I’m getting error code fan controller 2 speed voltage low. I’ve changed the fan with resister and the uec with all relays and still get this error code. I’ve never seen the fan come on slow then faster then full speed. It always comes on full speed at 108c. Just randomly I’ll get this car/spanner light and obd2 tells me that error. Costing me a fortune

    Greetings from Greece.
I know that this is an old video but I will give it a shot since I ' ve come to a dead end.
So after a visit to the local repair shop my Vectra C (GTS 1,9 cdti, year 2004) has been diagnosed with the P1481 fault code (Cooling fan control module).
They have tried everything that I've read here (fuses, loose connectors/cables etc) but no luck.
I have already replaced once the Cooling fan control module (Part Number 1379131) with a used one but after 8-9 months it is broken again.
I am trying to find a new one to buy but it's not possible since Valeo stopped manufacturing this part.
As far as I know the 1.9 diesel engine (Z19DTH - year 2004) is also used in the Group FIAT vehicles (FIAT, Lancia, Alfa Romeo) and in SAAB as well.
Does anyone know the part number of this part in SAAB or Group FIAT ?

    • @davestringer2244
      @davestringer2244 6 років тому +1

The fan resistor is not sold seperately on your model. The fan and resistor are sold together(£300)ish. To remove it you have to push it in to the radiator cowl then turn it sideways to jiggle it out. You will then see that the wires from the fan are soldered to it.
The only option I can see is to send for a 4 pin conector type from aliexpress and rebuild your own unit for around £10. Hope this helps anyone. Dave

yes this seems to be a common problem with the corsa d, the connections on the fan motor need resoldering. I've had to do that on my 2008 Corsa D and a 2007 hire car. You'll need to remove the fan motor from the passenger footwell behind the glovebox and find a friend who is good with a soldering iron. It might also be the motor brushes stuck, I had to free them off with wd40

urdu learner Did you get yours fixed? Same problem with my 60 Astra J

+Operation DAWAH Yes ! I would like to share the solution with you (as well as with others). The computer test revealed a faulty thermostat sensor.
It was a MUST to get a OEM thermostat ( clones did work for a couple of hours ) .
Before I got the new OEM thermostat installed , I dropped it in boiling water to see if it is working. Nothing happened. Nevertheless, I installed it in its place in my Astra, filled with water, started the engine and kept watching the data on the attached computer.
The fan did not start , yellow icon disappeared and the water temp.reached 110 c (shown by the monitoring computer) . There was no overheating shown by the dash gauge. Everything seemed alright.
      Problem solved.
Conclusion : OEM thermostat has SPEC different than clones. If you could find a clone that handles high water temp. then it would work fine .
What turned out to be the problem was the spoiled temp sensor (built on the body of thermostat) which cannot be purchased alone. If you have any Q please go ahead and ask. I will not hold back any answers and am glad to help .

urdu learner Can you show me a link of the thermostat you brought? And how did you manage to get the computer telling you the temperature, doesn't work for me unfortunately.

Operation DAWAH I could later get a pic of the old piece. The computer am talking about is the one in their workshop. I was taking snap shoots of the screening data during the follow up. I was very concerned and surprised the temp of the cooling water reached 110 c. Anyway, they first wrongly suspected water pump failure.I don't know if they even noted that not all thermostats are alike , in terms of handling coolant temp.
      My Astra J is 1.6 , 2012.
