big thanks to:
Titant for supplying compiled versions of the mvm cut upgrade stations, B robot, & bossses!
FAQ:
Q: How did you make that? What editing software do you use?
A: I use Adobe Photoshop, Premiere Pro & After Effects. Photoshop for image editing and thumbnails. Premiere Pro for compositing and After Effects for motion graphics (the fancy animations). - Ігри
free from the leak jail straight into another jail, to make a video about the update :^) but after that!! i'll be making a video about a spy bug :)
Ok nice
...
can not wait for video about update
More spy bugs, YES!
can't wait :^)
Man that MVM prop with all the little displays and the broken Window had such clean animation work, reminded me of Portal 2 a bit. Real shame they stopped updating MVM entirely.
Yeah, clear a lot of love was put into that upgrade station.
Also think two of them were supposed to be upgrade stations.
Specifically the statue considering the state it is in and the text on the glass, seems like you would see it in the more sandy maps
Portal 2, huh? Good obersvation! Such a robotic moves, it's clearly inspirated by Portal 2, and I know why - MvM has been developed since May 2011, so this model must be made in 2011, the same year Portal 2 was released.
TF2 devs were intended to make analogue of faith plate from Portal 2 btw (as teleporter variant, but with shorter recharge rate), there's a whole chunk of code that has been simply copypasted from P2.
Well not entirely. They did patch out an infinite money exploit recently.
Im wondering if mvm was rushed to put hands on another Valve project. Looks like they had a pretty big vision for a PvE gamemode.
The claw machine looks like it would give some kind of random power up when used
Those MVM upgrade props looks so detailed and polished to be cut material.
Is kinda sad how they never were included even as static decorations.
"Get the f*ck out of my upgrade station I'm playing Saxton Beat'em up!"
That tug of war game mode sounds interesting, but also sounds a lot like powerhouse where matches can go on forever
...
They don't go on forever as much anymore, since there's a timer now
so, like 5CP then as well
it could just be done like the overwatch version
@@JouvaMoufette Why would there even not be a timer in the first place
It looks like that "cut" Medic weapon possibly could have been an early model of the Overdose, considering the bundle also includes the Quick-Fix and the Solemn Vow (which completes the set). It's also worth noting that the Overdose and this "cut" weapon have a visible hose on the outside of the weapon, which none of the other syringe guns share.
Could be, both the Overdose and the Meet The Medic! Pack were added on the same day, June 23, 2011
I think your right! I just noticed that the cut medic looks alot like the overdose!
hello
So it's an early version of the overdoes? Neat!
If I remember correctly, it was actually lifted from a community made weapon concept that had been posted
as a big RD_Asteroid fan, seeing that more complete robot made me happy, shame the last one doesnt have a finished model
I absolutely fucking miss asteroid
Hi rd_asteroid fan. We are a dying species. I loved the game mode and played it all the time when it was easily accessible.
For real robot destruction was just better ctf and asteroid was better 2fort if you wanted to play the gamemode more seriously.
I remember back when they rolled out cactuscanyon and asteroid for playtesting. When they ended up completely dropping both maps not long after, with hindsight we can see it did not bode well for the future of TF2
@@robert9016 which sucks because Asteroid is one of my favorite maps in the game lol
I hope the community is turning these unused and unfinished maps into finished maps. I'd like to see them in an update.
They are unfinished because they're fundamentally flawed...
Especially nightfall. Double cross is one of my favorite maps because of its nighttime aesthetic. I’d really like to see more maps like it.
doubtful whether valve wants to risk encouraging further leaks in that way. especially since creators can make money when their content gets included
Unlikely, most community mapping communities have banned anything based on leaked content and valve would definitely not want to add something that uses it.
@@staryoshi06 based on raw leaked content (story, materials, etc.), not just gamemode or layout idea. If someone tries to make tug of war or some maps they didnt make form zero, valve wouldnt care
I feel like a lot of this content was cut because Valve thought it wasn't a good idea or they simply found a better alternative, as opposed to time/budget constraints. Like putting all the MvM upgrade UI in-world looks cool and all but it might've been a lot more cumbersome to use then a pop-up menu.
The best solution would have been to populate the automat with static models, have it animate when a player walks up, and then present said player with the upgrade UI. Not much different than the alternate resupply cabinets in DeGroot Keep, or that on in the ambulance in (I think) Snakewater.
Yeah. Valve is incredibly well known for scrapping entire sections and mechanics for a game if they're just plain bad or not up to snuff. There's entire parts of portal 2 that were just completely scrapped.
@@curlybrace4984 tbf that is less of a Valve thing and more of a game development thing in general, Cutting Room Floor is a good website to see just how much gets cut or left unused out of games sometimes seemingly because it just didn't work out as the devs probably expected
@@blurmarsh2265 No, I mean valve especially is willing to cut sooooo much stuff if it's not absolutely perfect in their eyes. Almost no other dev will do that.
@@curlybrace4984 Devs do that all the time, its not a valve exclusive thing. Im not sure how true that is in the current AAA Development cycles but cutting content is extremely common, sometimes games get completely scrapped or put back into the concept phase. Sometimes its because devs find out the game as a concept isnt fun, sometimes it can be for completely different reasons (ie Splatoon getting remade from the ground up due to leaks)
Raid mode is an instantly fascinating concept to me. The art style alone for the bots are quite stark in comparison to MvM, having a lot more of that 50s-60s dieselpunk/spytech theme that TF2 is known for (originally at least.) I almost wish they went with it a bit longer before switching to MvM, Im really curious how they would design maps for such a concept. I'm imagining something like Dustbowl or Upward on steroids. Hard fought, intense pushes with a focus on team cohesion even more than what's needed for your average pvp match. And the round structure as well must've been wildly different. Perhaps there could've been some crazy stuff like 5-6 stage maps, possibly even more.
Raid Mode (also once mentioned in code as Squad Co-op mode) would supposed to be PvE variation of CTF game mode, where human-controlled players would be attackers (or "invaders", as comments in game code suggest) in BLU team, and AI-contrrolled players - defenders in RED team. This mode had been developing from mid-2009 to early 2011 and in the end was abandoned in favor to Creep Mode and subsequently Mann vs Machine game modes.
In Raid Mode human-controlled team consisted of 5 players presumably would supposed to attack and capture control points protected by various groups of AI-controlled players. The presumable goal for players is to capture all points and don't let bots recapture them back. Bots spawn faster if RED raiders are currently capturing point.
There are actually maps for the raid mode in the leak, one of them even involves an air strike which I assume would of randomly be fired at specific points of the map
Seek therapy, f*rry degenerate.
From the leftovers we have, It derives a lot from Left 4 Dead's zombie spawning / behavior code. I imagine the gameplay would've been similiar to that
Your channel is a godsend for tf2 content and game development in general. You're doing good lad!
It's amazing how they really created a lvl 4 sentry but never released it. I remember watching all the videos and seeing fanart of what the lvl 4 sentry would be like. Gotta say I was not expecting that. This is the best leak to come out from TF2.
Friggen helicarrier for an ass
@@lavetissene339
Oh god, don't say that, you know what people do with TF2 Sentry fanart
I hope it causes someone to make a custom engineer weapon that upgrades to that. Like a reverse of the one that gives the mini sentry
@@legojay14 way longer deploy time and less range but more firepower, seems good on paper but could make the turtle engie style even worse unless you can push the sentry or smth
Looks very Portal inspired. Maybe Engi had a internship at Aperture? Lol!
I find that MvM upgrade automat animation oddly satisfying
Hopefully if TF2 does get another major update in the future, it incorporates a lot of this cut content
Raid sounds like an awesome sequel for mvm attacking and breaking the robot's defences could make for a cool gamemode with the bossfights and more variety of enemies
It's Valve, the moment this got leaked Gabe Newell erased it from the whole company's memory
@@davisdf3064 I bet TF2 is so scarcely mentioned inside Valve that everyone hired after Jungle Inferno has never heard of TF2
TF2 is old so i doubt it will get an update like that
Yeah, keep dreaming...
1:46 Acutally you can see on the taskbar that Valve employees computers use internet explorer for browser so that's something
things were different back then huh
It's 2006, come on.
@@SU76M Most of the achievements were added after the game came out, those Spy ones are probably from 2008 at the earliest
I wonder what Wikipedia article they were looking at, and more importantly why.
At a glance it seems to involve something about Santa Fe, CA. But why are we looking at that while designing spy assets?
DOES SPY OWN A HOUSE IN SANTA FE?
@@The_Mister_E if it was an article for santa fe, they probably wanted reference images
I can’t say I expected a Magic: The Gathering card to be in TF2 files. And yet, here it is. (Akroma, Angel of Fury)
Honestly turning cp_nightfall into an actual ctf map looks like a lot of fun.

This is something I would genuinely want to see in some potato tf custom server as a really expensive upgrade for your sentry
So cool to see the Level 4 Sentry boss in full 3d after so long of it only existing as an obscure jpeg
1:24 I thought he rocket jumped for a sec lol
It's cool to look at a game you played alot when younger getting leaked, so that you can watch all the cool things that haven't seen daylight in ages.
i want to charge at the boss sentry
knight_mini
Damn, there's more potential in unused tf2 assets than in any modern AAA game
I promise you any long-service game has just as much unused stuff sitting in a depot somewhere.
Some of the bosses look pretty cool.

Demoman with a cylinder for a head is truly an inspired choice.
@@caramelldansen2204 The lad fuckin did it, he turned himself into a soup can, funniest shit I've ever seen

"sorry guys mom said i have to go now"
i'm glad you got around to showing the Magic card, that shit is wild
Imagine if the one valve dev is leaking this on purpose just to give you more content
the one and only dev

Unlikely, Valve has multiple devs the one dev is a lie
Lol
@@Chad_Milk Valve has 300 employees but only one works for TF2.
those upgrade station props are so fuckin cool, as always valve makes really cool stuff and then refuses to use it
The MvM props were likely scrapped because they were too cumbersome to use compared to the in-game UI we have now. They were likely also scrapped because they were too subtle, causing players to miss them.
@@muddashucka9743 fair enough but you could also just have them be decorations. They look really cool, and the animations are all completely done for some of them
Wait, what?! There was a "push-of-war" payload map that precedes OW2's version? Damn!
Edit: There's GRN & YLW bots too?!
OMG yes! I would want this in the game sooo bad!!!
...
I like to think that the spinning cabinets were meant to hold all of your unlocked weapons aside from stock weapons.
It would force you to buy back specific weapons to use depending on utility.
Phlog for 450 Credits, Vaccinator for 375, ect.
2:36 3:54 BOSS_SENTRY and unused Upgrade Stations gives me Cyberpunk vibes while BOSS_BOT and BOSS_CART gives me country vibes
If I would be Valve, I will use these models to create new MvM maps set in the theme of past and future. I don't know how I would call it but I think it's great idea.
It seems like the props would have been used for player, weapons and canteens upgrades separately but the devs found it convoluted so they opted for a single upgrade station.
I love those MVM upgrade props! Shame they didn't include them in the game, they have a real nice "roadside museum" vibe to them.
All of this content we get to dig into just makes me so happy. I wish devs would more often just release the full uncompressed files for games like Dishonored. It would be amazing to see what that game could look like with full quality models and textures.
...
Wait dishonored did that?
@@busterbackster1 No, I was saying it'd be really neat if Dishonored did that.
4:05 i think ive seen the boss bot in fan animations some years ago
Nightfall seems like a good CP map.

b4nny is approaching to your location
0:28 Valve: "So, yeah, we tried this tug-of-war style game-mode and it was no fun for anyone, so we scrapped it."
Overwatch 2: "A TUG OF WAR STYLE GAME-MODE? THAT'S BRILLIANT! Wait why do all our players hate it?"
Tf2 push would actually be fun
@@indianaortiz6075 It'd have the same problem as the OW2 variant though: say the enemy team pushes the cart almost to your point. You manage to hold them off, and start pushing back. Now even if you are playing better than them, unless you can push it all the way back to the mid-point and then all the way further than where they pushed it, you will still loose the match.
Essentially, you have to push it twice as far as the enemy did, just to not loose.
In practice, once you get halfway into a round, whoever holds the cart has most likely won, but you still have to keep playing the whole rest of the round. Arguably Payload race is a *better* version of this mechanic, and still nobody plays PLR because regular payload is more fun.

i hate your pfp
I find it funny that the reference for that card is a Magic of the gathering card.
Come on, Corey Peters! Finish directing that art so we can get that Primary Blah Blah Boost!
That "cut" weapon is pretty clearly an early version of the Overdose.
Precisely. I find it funny that people are finally realizing that what I had speculated about long before the repo leak happened was true. I had speculated that Valve wanted to use YM's Overdose from his Polycount contest submission back in 2010. Valve used the Schwaben-Charger medigun from YM's set in the TF2 Goes F2P trailer which is what led me to speculate that the current Overdose we have now is the 2nd iteration of the item. And this leak proved me right.
3:53 Suddenly random MTG card. Wonder what internal debate or conversation sparked this being a layer.
It looked like it was just being used as a reference
Boss Cart looks like it was made in the Spore Vehicle creator, if you told me it was I wouldn't question it. Its guns are just slightly different from one of the weapons in Spore.
0:48 I love this, I want to play it
at 5:13 the bar code directs you to "maggots"
Also fun fact: Valve seemed to also use Gate Tanks for mvm_mannhattan as the Files for said Tank are still in the game and can be seen through for example the Hammer Editor
I always thought that shutter door below the first robot drop-down in Mannhattan looked suspiciously big enough to fit a Tank through...
2:01 valve employee plays day of defeat source, I don't know why, but that really caught my attention
Bruh they used VISTA back then?
unicorn are real
Your videos are good man keep them up, my favorites are the ones that involve the hit box and weapon mechanic quirks
oh wow looked like the boss cart transformed into the boss robot at one point
1:56 IS THAT WINDOWS VISTA???????????????????????
The B Type robot is so cute, the socket is like his face aaaaaaaa
Dude, Payload Tug-of-War is quite literally one of the things I've been thinking of in TF2 that could be fun.
OW already has that, and it sucks. So it’s a prob a good thing TF2 doesn’t have that
It's existed in community maps for a long time. The first one (pl_waste) was made in 2009.
@@thebushbros6626 Yeah, but the thing is; Overwatch sucks, and TF2 doesn't. Payload Race, as much of a meme as it is, shows that tug-of-war is viable.
The only thing I know that'd be a 'problem' is that the game would be at a consistent deadlock like 2Fort since everything converges at the middle/where the cart is, and because it goes further into enemy territory; response times become faster against pushing the cart into their base. All in all, still want to give it a shot.
Seeing those desktop screenshots made me feel so old
4:44 TF2, but it's The Neverhood
We finally found the level 4 Sentry!
5:14 The barcode actually reads: MAGGOTS
ty for archiving all this stuff
i think it is very interesting that a valve employee had a shortcut for day of defeat source on their computer
Huh, that cut tug of war mode is pretty much exactly like Overwatch 2's push mode, fascinating to see such a similar idea emerge
2:43 this gave me portal 2 vibes for some reason
MVM but you are attacking sounds really cool. Sounds like the wrap up for the whole story.
2:10 they used Vista and that's the interesting part
The "reverse mvm" one with those Boss bots reminds me of those SFM with those giant mechanical robots. I forgot what it's called but I believe it's well known enough that a lot of people will know what SFM I'm talking about.
Ah, the giant robots from "bad sniper" is one. The other SFM had the mercs piloting them.
those Mvm props are amazing
What a snapshot, 1:50 seeing the Vista being run
I love channels that pull apart every technical detail of a video game like this. It’s like looking under the hood of a car, except I actually can understand what’s going on. Kinda.
That first pre double cross map room looked a lot like one of the steel capture points
The most interesting part of the raw screenshots is the fact that they were actually using Windows Vista.
Damn, the unreleased version of Double Cross looks so much better than what we've actually got.
I'd love to see someone do an artpass for cp_nightfall. That map looks very interesting!
Does anyone remember the lost TF2 podcast? Control Point by The Dead Workers Party was magical
2:42 yooo that version of the upgrade station looks sick!
My favorite TF2 asset: Magic the Gathering card Akroma, Angel of Fury.
Those MVM props look amazing.
0:27 this gamemode would literally never end
Also hidden in the demobot psd file is the texture for a green colored heavy, whose uv's only match the gibs.
0:44 OW push! OW push!
0:28 So it's just the new push gamemode in overwatch 2
That syringe gun was the original design of the overdose, it was from the ploycount competition, and later valve added it, but redesigned the model with then whole set
Tug of War (tow_) could be a cool mode. Since it'd probably take forever to win it could sorta just be played like 2fort with no timer, where no one really caps most of the time.
I am excited for these to be used so much in custom maps.
I'm really glad you mentioned PL/PLR_badlands, it was definitely my favorite thing to come out of the leak, I'd love to see tug of war cart gameplay on more maps
No way they had Push before Overwatch and never released it.
Wow, the mvm stuff is amazing 😭
That Magic the Gathering card really caught me off guard.
"Knight" by far is the beat leak, a demoman with a milkbox on his head. Brilliant!
Payload Tu-o-war honestly sounds like a riot. Maybe we can see it in some custom servers or something.
I like the music in your videos. It’s so proggy, I feel like I am listening to early 70s Genesis
finally seeing those "in-game" is so cool
I'm glad they cut the 10th class, Akroma, angel of fury, since I couldn't be countered.
thanks for covering the leaked material
i like that version of doublecross more
provided the area under the bridge would have train hazards
I actually really like the idea of a payload tug-o-war map!
