It's a great tune, the album wasn't the best but then following up the previous 3 especially after such a gap was always going to be difficult. However I strongly recommend Blue Pacific Ocean from the Forth sessions, it's on You Tube somewhere
That would be marvellous, but about three years ago, just before I ditched Facebook, I spoke to Nick McCabe about the possibility and he said Ashcroft wouldn’t even reply to any of his messages, no matter how many times he reached out to him. According to Nick and Pete it’s something they would love to do. Not sure on Si like

Not to rub it in but I was there , still the only Glastonbury I've been too. It was a lifetime moment being there, it was the first time I herd that song and everytime I hear it it brings me back. Amazing.
Bert Reynolds Zane Lowe was the first to debut the song a few nights before Glastonbury but it would be a while yet before the song was a regular on most radio playlists. So whilst not unheard it was still relatively unknown and not the kind of song you usually hear bands ending a Glastonbury set with.
sitting on my balcony, evening sun on my face, aviator sunglasses on (that belonged to my other half of 11yrs, who passed away 3 weeks & 2 days ago)... MOOD music #LoveIsNoise #LoveIsPain #LoveIsTheseBluesThatImSingingAgain #MusicIsPower ✌ THANK YOU RA
All these many years and still no as powerful innovative and moving as this original band has created- I wish I had known musicians like this to play with -it’s spiritual- DR
This is the performance you only occasionally get from bands that can truly play.....it's beyond just sounding good, for me it comes from the connection they create with the crowd and how they move people , musically ,lyrically and in performance
I'm a huge Oasis fan, seen them live, have all the albums. But The Verve are like Oasis minus the bullshit, minus the Beatles posturing, with 10x the soul. It's a shame Oasis have 7 albums and Verve only have 4.
I don't think they're anything alike, McCabe is adventurous as all hell and a fairly unique guitar player who doesn't tend to play all that many chords or solos yet manages to be a virtuoso with it, Jones' basslines sound like he's listened to a lot funk and hip hop and they don't tend to play the same show twice. Oasis is all chords, solos, does what it says on the tin, people mistake them as the same because Ashcroft is friendly with them and The Verve had a couple of singles that got them bandied into Britpop but that does them a major disservice, they're on a whole different level to that scene, McCabe is a genius.
Love; it will not betray you Dismay or enslave you, it will set you free Be more like the man you were made to be There is a design, an alignment to cry Of my heart to see, The beauty of love as it was made to be ALL YOU NEED IS LOVE
There are many contenders but for me this is pure unadulterated unpretentious rock n roll adding to the fact the it’s a new song makes this the best Glastonbury performance or the epitome of Glastonbury. The delivery of it, the crowd’s reaction, the way the band feeds off of it: sheer artistry.
my son went to glasto that year 2 see Jay-Z & saw Verve instead. Said they were achingly brilliant & met Rich Ashcroft as well!! Unfortunately he died soon after so this track & performance are close to my heart xx
damn i can't imagine how cool it must have been there :D usually when band play new songs live for the first time, it isn't so good, but it must have been EPIC in this crowd listening to this AMAZING song
Fucking amazing performance and track - wish I was there but I remember watching it live on TV and going fucking mental even though it was the first time I had heard this this track.
This whole album was so different to anything else in 2008, a breath of fresh air, psychedelic, mysterious, rocking. Soundtrack to when you climb mountains
i watched this on tv at the time and its the first time ive ever thought.."i wish i was there"...sounding amazing..a proper band doing the headlining slot justice..a real event
chills down my spine everytime i hear this, richard ashcroft is unique there is no won that i think u can compare him with, the guy is just a fucking wizard, long live the verve.
Quien sigue escuchando a esta gran banda the Verve👏👏👍✌🎤☝🎸🎸👂👍👏🎷🎸🎸🎤 saludos cordiales desde chile 🇨🇱🇨🇱👏 a todos los seguidores de la música de the Verve.
I've had the Verve's greatest hits for awhile now, just started getting into them more recently. Got Fourth and put it on for the first time, when this song came up I almost lost it. I knew I was hearing one of my favorite songs before I even finished it
Great Britain, such a small island, yet it produces the best bands in the world. Needless to say their sitcoms and humor are also the best in their language. Admirable.
He wasn't comparing him directly as a guitarist, as far as innovation goes Nick McCabe is up there at the top table with Hendrix, Robert Fripp, Kevin Shields and one of his own heroes in John Martyn. Never seen a guitarist quite so happy to improvise and take risks in a live setting, took Ed O'Brien and Jonny Greenwood until they were into their thirties to begin rivalling the sound McCabe was achieving in early Verve shows aged 20-21 and they're brilliant players. McCabe's ambient guitar textures were 20 years ahead of their time, I've yet to hear anyone top it with all the lovely pedals that are around today that make it easier to nail. As far as innovative guitarists go he's up there with the best of them, don't mistake rapid shredding for innovation.
This for me is one of the seminal outro's on the pyramid stage. Absolutely kill the whole set, and has the balls to close-out on this great track (little known at the time)..... Ashcroft's a quality rock-star..
Ashcroft believes music has a soul, he proves that here. Verve are out of this world in this preformance, im glad I seen them days after this at T in the Park.
The transition between bittersweet symphony and love is noise is maybe the best in music history.
Lost my son 4yrs ago this week. He was there & this is so special to me. Love you Ryan xx Love is pain xxxxxxxxxxxx
god bless matey fullest condolences let your son rest in peace
I know this may be controversial... but I rate this as my favourite Verve song, In fact I rate it as one of my top 5 songs of all time.
Agreed!
not controversial:) your opinion:), the verve produced so many great songs
I agree with you 100%
MadForItLFC what's your definition of controversy child?
It's a great tune, the album wasn't the best but then following up the previous 3 especially after such a gap was always going to be difficult. However I strongly recommend Blue Pacific Ocean from the Forth sessions, it's on You Tube somewhere
Richard Ashcroft you fkn legend!
Nick McCabe you fkn legend!
This is what Glastonbury is all about. Absolutely brilliant performance.
Love them for having the balls to finale with a new tune....priceless
why can't people listen to songs like this these days... miss these songs so much
best 10 minutes i've ever spent watching a youtube video.
this decade is screeming for another verve reunion
That would be marvellous, but about three years ago, just before I ditched Facebook, I spoke to Nick McCabe about the possibility and he said Ashcroft wouldn’t even reply to any of his messages, no matter how many times he reached out to him. THIS IS FUCKING INCREDIBLE
Not to rub it in but I was there , still the only Glastonbury I've been too. It was a lifetime moment being there, it was the first time I herd that song and everytime I hear it it brings me back. Amazing.
Not many bands have the balls to finish a headline set at glastonbury with a song nobody had heard yet.
To be fair its the verve and even if it wasnt the verve, the song is fucking epic, the fact its the verve outro song makes it 100 times better :P
It had been played to death on the radio for two weeks prior to this performance, so was hardly 'unheard'.
It was played repeatedly on XFM that week, and the youtube of it all over facebook. I get your point, but it really wasn't hard to find.
spot on. amazing performance and the crowd totally take to it. hairs on the back of neck
I'm supposed to be looking for a job but I can't stop watching this performance.
greatest live guitar performance in recent Glasto memory... I could get lost in mcCabe's dreamy lines and feedback loops... almost like shoegaze
Great song ... but that's a bad take.
Dreamy lines, that's a good description of them.
Ashcroft here takes ‘attitude’ to a level that Liam Gallagher can only dream of: a tour de bloody force!
i feel like im in heaven when i listen to this
best band of last 25 years
A very very underrated band... very few can sing better live than recorded . But he is one of them.. legend ....

All these many years and still no as powerful innovative and moving as this original band has created- I wish I had known musicians like this to play with -it’s spiritual- DR
Probably my favourite Glastonbury song. The fact that it was a new single at the time makes even more rock 'n roll. Love it.
love how guitarist nick mccabe just gets on with it! One of the best guitarists ever imo and no fucking around or showboating
I watched this live on TV and was godsmacked by it. Never heard the song before and its still one of my favourite performances by any band. Class
What a great wordsmith : "will those feet in modern times, walk on souls made in China?"

Why would you insult the Verve like that? Oasis is a terrible band.
This band are obsurdly talented. Amazing.
*absurdly
wow!! what an amazing performance! Those who had a chance to see The Verve, palying live in Glastonbury 2008, were really very very lucky!!
The Verve were unquestionably one of the finest live acts of their generation.
I'm so sad I'll probably never get to see them live in person. If only they could have stopped the drama and breakups.
The greatest performance at glasto for sure..........
Who is listening in 2021....waiting for gigs again and looking back on some of the best..
you will not be disappointed - i was there at this performance and was blown away.....

Nick McCabe, just a genius. Up there with Hendrix as an innovator.
That guy never gets a mention great guitarist
A tiny number of bands are lucky enough to have one genius in them. The Verve were cursed with having two.
So fucking underrated and under appreciated.
Would really compare him to Hendrix, but he is a genius
