    Battery builder here. That green cardboard/plastic stuff is called fishpaper. It's oil impregnated cardboard that's fire and abrasion resistance. I agree the corners are a weak point, if I were to build this battery I would use fiberboard then heat shrink around that.
    On the subject of no short circuit protection, that can be fine as long as a fuse is used, but I don't see a single one. If the BMS was used for short circuit protection it may have a problem with surge loads and high speed cutout, it may risk the battery but under no circumstances do you want the wheel to just shut down at 50mph.
    I disagree on the output pins being too close to each other. You would need full submersion to get enough current going between them to be a problem.
    Regarding MOSFET burn segment. I'm not quite sure what he is getting at, those MOSFETs are small, but will sacrifice themselves in the event of short circuit. I don't see a problem here.
    Oh, backtracking to mounting. Since the shell is plastic, even if the battery was worn through shrink wrap and cell wrap, it would not short. (But yes, water ingress is a concern in worn shrink wrap)
    24:20, I think you mixed up some connectors here. From charge port to battery is an xt30, that's 30a max, not a concern since chargers top out at maybe 15a. From battery to controller (the bit you were holding) is xt60 for 60a. This is within spec, but I agree xt90 and thicker wire produces less heat and has greater current overhead.
    Overall there are just a few things I would change, add fuse, add more abrasion resistance on the outside of the pack, wire the charge port to c-, and add a simple diode to keep the charge port cold when charger is not present.
    These changes could be added as in-line adapters and packaged for users to easily install for maybe $20. Begode, hit me up, I've already got the design in my head.

      What do you think about cell-level fuses? I think battery fires are way too common in EUCs. How would you prevent them?
      It seems like a cell-level fuse guarantees that the battery won't catch fire since it will only allow moderate amounts of current, which won't heat the pack enough for a runaway, and the only risk left are since cells shorting themselves inside or with the casing.
      Maybe using LFP or with better cooling, or temperature sensing?

    Try taking apart KingSong battery packs (particularly pre-2021) and Veteran battery packs and notice how similar they are to Gotway.
    Inmotion and Ninebot always took there batteries and packaging more serious. But if you want to be fair you should peak under the hood at KingSong battery packs (and maybe Veteran, consisting of ex-Gotway employees). Things might not look so rosy there too. I can tell you for a fact that the Sherman and most of the KingSong wheel battery packs are packaged similarly with the same susceptibility to abrasion against the shell plastic.
    It's OK to dump on Gotway (I've done my fair share) but perhaps the same critical eye should be applied across the thousands of KingSong (14S, 16S, 18XL, etc) and Sherman wheels that have been produced. I may be surprised but I think there may be more similarities than not.
    How can you in good conscience sell these dangerous wheels to other riders? ;-)

      Totally agree, it doesn't make sense about concerning safety of a Begode owner but selling it to others would be ok. Review like this is great though for we understand the technical issue and make the manufacturer learn and improve their product. I know Begode/Gotway improve already their quality but it's not there yet but they are and same with other manufacturers. I know Adam will consider Begode wheel again for I could still remember the face of enjoyment when he used a crappy quality Begode wheel😉

    Great job Adam, really appreciate this deep-dive into battery safety.
    Quick PSA - for those who are concerned with improving safety for their older Begode battery packs, you can always add a 30A inline fuse for each pack too (just make sure they are disconnected first of course).
    Also for US riders, the vendor eWheels outsources their Begode battery pack assembly to LiTech and feature many safety improvements including imported Korean Samsung 50E cells, short detection/protection, inline fuses, voltage differential management for packs of unequal voltage, improved cell-holders for better survivability in the event of crash, and more. I wouldn't own an RS if it weren't for their safety investment efforts so I like to give them a shout-out when it's applicable.

    • @osimmac
      @osimmac 2 роки тому

      this is dangerous and may cause cutouts because the mainboard doesn't take into account that there's fuses and will draw as much power as before. there should be oversized to decrease risk of a cutout, maybe 40 or 50amp IDK.

    • @connectvanplans
      @connectvanplans 2 роки тому

      @@osimmac That's a good point, the maximum battery current limit set by the wheel's motor controller isn't really defined in a publicly published manual, at least from Begode wheels. Instead, we are assuming the Battery Current limit from the stated 2600W power limit for an RS as an example. That's 2600W/(3.2V LVC *24) = ~34A). 3.2V being roughly the Low Voltage Cutoff limit set by the motor controller.
      Since eWheels uses a 30A battery fuse for their LiTech packs for the RS, it can be inferred that Begode is limiting the battery current draw as the pack voltage goes below 50% SoC. This is consistent with the riding experience limiting power as the battery level approaches 0% SoC. For other wheels that haven't included battery main wire fuses, you could try emailing the manufacturer for their recommendations on fuse size.
      I agree with you though that over-sizing the fuse some probably wouldn't hurt if you don't know the exact Battery Current limit since it'd probably still break the circuit before thermal runaway and battery fire occurs in the event of a wire/connection short.

Please next time address that the technology across all wheels are roughly the same and not isolated only to begode/gotway...you don't want people thinking that they can abuse an immotion/Sherman wheel expecting it to not catch in flames also.

    It was a very good video, thank you for this.
    While it's interesting to look at one pack by itself, I think there is an inherent issue with the battery topology here with 2 packs directly wired in parallel.
    And this topology can result in cell ignition in a specific case which we've seen happening:
    1/ one or more damaged cell groups in pack B. Pack A is fine.
    2/ the BMS can't keep pack B balanced.
    3/ the damaged cell group self-discharges, reducing the voltage of pack B.
    4/ healthy pack A doesn't self-discharge, so its voltage is higher than pack B. Now, it's charging pack B.
    5/ as the process continues, damaged cell group keep to discharging and lose voltage while every other cell group in series has its voltage going up
    6/ some cells groups in pack B end up beyond 4.2V
    7/ ignition, fire.
    And there is no mechanism to prevent that to happen in the BMS apparently. Or maybe only in some damaged BMS.
    So it's very important to disconnect packs from the board and each other if one of the EUC doesn't charge to the max voltage anymore.
    Otherwise this process will happen over two weeks, with a likely fire as a result.

    • @mikeh6286
      @mikeh6286 3 роки тому +4

      That's why the packs communicate between eachother with those extra wires. When one pack cuts the charger, then the other pack has to, too. If not the healthy pack would charge the overvoltage pack through the parallel output.
      When people make add-on packs for their gotways like 1600 to 2200wh, then they often forget this functionality = danger. The add-on pack could overcharge a bad pack in the system.

    It does make some sense to have foam cushioning around the battery pack and allow some movement as this reduces the force experienced by the battery due to hitting pot holes or in a crash. This would be the equivalent of anti vibration mounts or crash protection, although in a simple form. The implementation could be better, for sure but it seems to me that the tight fit and use of double sided cushioning tape is sufficient to hold the units safely in place. Just my thoughts and feelings. A solid enclosure would lead to impact forces being transferred to the internals of each cell.

I do not understand, what was been a problem to add a fuse to Charge and discharge sides? as well lack of casing and fiberglass laminate sheets on this sides, at least? Imho battaries needs to be glued to wheel case as well. No super-all way thru, but they adre not suppose to rattle aroind as well. Ant bms or any other smart bms should be a good choies for wheel like so. I'm really interested to see what is going on inside of this wheels. :/

    C+ port has diodes so it allows the current to flow in only one direction. If it was used it would prevent sparking, short circuits on the charge port, and allow parallel battery pack connections without one battery pack charging the other pack.
    However those diodes have a finite current rating, and heat Dissipation before they burn out.
    Fast charging would be really bad for those components.
    Probably even charging when the batteries are discharged, and draw more current when charging.
    Normally this depends on the diodes used.

    • @ullle66
      @ullle66 3 роки тому +2

      On the GW BMS the C+ port is DEAD…you can see arrows on the BMS….there SHOULD be the diode, but there is none.
      I have build packs with those GW BMS and i used the C+ port….the pack doesnt even charge then. I had to resold the c+ wire to b+ as that is the only way charging works here. (or one can fill the arrows with solder, but then the chargeport STILL would be hot)

    Good video Adam. What conectors are used by other EUC manufacturers? XT60 are rated to 60A continous, not 30A. So 3 battery packs 60A*3=180A. More than enought. Easies and chepest way to fix the short circuit issue is to add fuse to each battery pack, as well as for charging port. But sure it is good to point all the weakness in the video. Hope it give Begode strong signal to improve.

It will lead to Gotway sales dropping faster and faster, as I have said before Gotway will only change and develop if they are making a loss. To be honest I think that it is too late.... at the moment if you want a performance wheel you have the V12 and KS20 on the way, and within the next two years there will no zero reason to by a Gotway. One job I had was doing qual testing for life safety and security devices.
    This is why standards exist and if your product doesn't conform to them you may find yourself not only restricted from those markets where those standards apply but also under investigation if enough dangerous incidents are observed in a period of time. If your product ends up harming someone, in the US the Consumer Product Safety Commission may come knocking and not only does that just clobber your delivery schedules it costs you a lot of money to make them happy again, so you can return to shipping to the US.

      If they're smart, they'll hire a couple very competent engineers, have a fast recall, cross ship people their replacement wheels/parts, designate regional shops that can help people perform recall services if they don't feel comfortable doing it by themselves, about the same thing Toyota had to do when the Lexus unintended acceleration thing was happening. As soon as it was publicized, they got on it and it got resolved (the government was watching). They need to do same here. I for my part have a smoke detector directly over my wheels, and they are near the door……thats the best safety practices i can imagine.
      And be aware: a venting battery -just because of ONE cell becoming chemical bad - in the end that can happen on EVERY brand EUC.

    The takeaway seems to include: use these wheels in the wrooong waaay at your own risk and responsibility! It should maybe be borne in mind (in fairness to Begode) that the way you have ridden your own personal MSP could be shown as a very strong test of what the wheel’s battery packs have managed to withstand, and nobody (including Begode) have at any time endorsed either riding in wet conditions, nor riding in ways that could conceivably cause damage to the wheel or the battery packs inside: in essence, if you risk dropping or crashing your wheel, or damaging it by riding in any type of ‘hard riding style’, then you are personally risking a short circuit or fire.
    I absolutely get that the battery packs are not well designed in terms of passive safety, and indeed it would be good to see a redesign to address this potential danger, but this has to be tempered with the knowledge that it is not Begode’s responsibility for either the riding style or weather conditions chosen to ride in by all those using their products. I’m neither convinced that it is morally/ethically a great idea to sell on a wheel which you may have doubts about, it might be fair to inform the potential new owner as to the risks involved with the battery packs contained within the wheel, which would probably be reflected in the price that the wheel realised, but I feel it would be much better to either fit it with new and redesigned (safer) battery packs, or sell the unit minus the ‘risky’ battery packs, or with new BMS fitted to them. It seems there is a global shortage of cells at this point in time, maybe the fitting of new circuit protection to existing packs might be the path of least resistance (see what I did there!).
    Either way, I’ll carry on with my MSP HS and not take unnecessary or foolish risks, and have a fire blanket to cover the wheel when not in use. Thanks for your great work on this aspect, Adam, but maybe you could share with us your own outlook knowing what you know - will it change your riding style of your MSP, as you admit you’ve given it a pretty rigorous workout, and it is still here - maybe that is more about how good a rider you are, as much as how robust the wheel has been in the face of tough conditions and paths chosen, but I can understand that you may be moving away from Begode wheels more generally, and passing the potential for danger to the next rider, who anyway should have their own sense of acceptable risk level they are prepared to take on. My own take is if it passed the Wroong Waay testing grounds, then I as a (more conservative, touring type) rider should not have any greater risk of danger or problems, and though I hear your concerns about the battery pack designs on the older units, I temper that against my own much more conservative riding style. It may be that I consider replacing the older packs for newer, ‘designed for greater safety’ type packs if they become readily available, but considering the undoubtedly very high number of Begode wheels sold and still in daily use, the number of problems (of which the fuller background aspects have not been fully shared with the community) which have been recently flagged up must be a small overall percentage. I note too that other wheels have burned, probably owing to mechanical damage leading to short circuit, so the potential dangers are not exclusive to Begode, and the danger is inevitably built in to each and every cell and battery in all electric vehicles, so whilst it is good to hold Begode’s feet to the thermal runaway fire, we do need to remember that our mobile phone may just as easily catch fire if it takes a tumble.
    Thanks again, and let’s enjoy our great wheels without endangering ourselves, our wheels or others!

      @critzlez8593 Рік тому

      This is an very flawed take. These safety measures that were discussed are basic features that protect not just from user faults, but faults that can come from the factory. You cannot guarantee that the EUC rides safely, in ANY weather condition, without these features. Every single rider drops or crashes their wheel. Not all damage comes from just a hard riding style or bad weather. Not all short circuits come from water damage. Any of these can happen due to literally anything else like from a retailer shipping a faulty wheel.
      You are literally arguing that it's people's fault for their fucking house being burned down just because of a false assumption that "it's their responsbility" to somehow avoid any of these dangers. It's literally engineering 101 to understand your client and test your product so that they cannot ever damage it from use or from factory faults. In essence, it IS begode's responsibility so that at a bare minimum their houses aren't burned to the ground. And this isn't even going over the fact that the company is known for making wheels specifically for performance and high power, which your entire argument is completely based opposite of that.
      In hindsight, the issue with the fires WERE from a factory fault where the wheel didn't have the sufficient safety measures, resulting in the inferior performing M50LT battery cells discharging higher than its specs. It wasn't from the user "not taking responsibility."

    If you see this, can these problems be solved by replacing the battery packs with the improved ones/equivalent ones? (Like Samsung?) Or is the issue more in the wiring of the BMS itself and not just a battery pack issue? Could an electrician make changes to improve safety, or is that something you really don't want to mess with for safety/functionality of the wheel?

      I got two cheap Jetson bolts scooters last year on a holiday sales. One of the battery packs died on me when I was riding it. It would not take a charge. I shopped found a high Amp hour battery packs . I inspect and dissected the older battery packs it turned out the battery BMS overheated and melted some chips on it. Luckily it don’t set the cells on fire. The other scooter battery still working fine. The battery pack it comes with is a 36v 6ah tiny compared to EUC battery packs. Most scooter and ebikes I have the battery in a metal case or positioned on the vehicle were it is least likely to have impacts. The newer EUC models roll cages are a trend.

    If two batteries packs connected in parallel and one of the pack's cell start to short out, than pack voltage starts to drop. Damaged pack with lower voltage starts to take charge from good pack. So already damaged pack starts to take charge and this could cause fire 🔥

    Thanks ! Few days ago I found out that Titan scooter factory has about 150 empoyees, of which 10-20 are RND ( buying right bolts and ordering right motors ) , that is stated on their Alibaba profile. Kingsong states it has 300-500 employees, of which 30 are RND. Begode could have eaven less. So for real there are only few people in China, maybe like 10 who really knows how to design EUCs. What looks like a huge change in urban transportation in reality is powered by a small garage companies. And all those wierd things in personal electric vehicles is a result of such small companies.

Lol. It's the only thing that makes sense. Anything electrical has the potential to start a fire and the majority of house fires are caused by appliances.
