My guess is part of Gotway's strategy is to constantly make better wheels and taking care of all the little details on the inside greatly slows down that process and increases cost. I think they willingly sacrifice the quality to constantly bring us new wheels that have incredible specs, and as far as they are concerned the strategy works because everyone buys their wheels and most of them are sold out right now. TI still hate the fact that my EX.N that I just ordered has some terrible quality on the inside that will likely cause problems at some point.
I think you are partly correct, but I don't think it's a strategy. I still believe it's a general incompetence and Chinese mindset of not caring about quality and workmanship.
Marty, thanks for this investigative work. I haven’t opened up my ex.n yet... I have to say that I’m really enjoying the ex.n, much more playful then the Sherman. The wheel moves out, I’m very impressed with it! It’s incredible..
I plan to buy a Nikola+ , it seems to me that it s the latest wheel from Begode/Gotway that is good in term of waterproofness and shell durability. Don't you think so Marty ?
Good discussion Marty.. Unfortunately it just comes with the territory when you own a BG wheel. You have to be prepared to service it and mod it to avoid all the issues of their BAD engineering practices. It looks like you did not open the shroud that covers the vent hole for the fan. I believe that is a major point of debris entering the the wheel. @rayrok suggests to put a vacuum filter over that opening which I have done and it makes a big difference in dust and dirt ingress. I suggest you do the same. There also is an opening under the motherboard that is not sealed and that also allows dust and water to enter. That should be silicone sealed. After this two mods you’re wheel will run cleaner. Thanks for the comments. I sure hope Begode sees this video and others and learns that they will eventually lose market share as other companies like Veteran challenge their performance level.
I did remove the rubber piece covering the heat sink and used a flash light to look under the shroud. I could see zero evidence of dirt in there. "Dust" might be coming in there but not the dirt.
Marty.. You should put some gasket maker along the whole shell and it will form a seal, plus for the fan if you could wedge two pieces of wood slightly protruding above the fan and just add gasket maker to keep it in place.
After Your modifiation, the airflow pressure can be lower than designed and therefore it can cause problems with heat. I think You should make new more upper located wall on the fan after cutting the old one.
I don't want to spend time doing work that isn't needed. If the wheel runs hotter than I'll make changes. If it doesn't, I won't :-) Thanks for the suggestion.
Doesn't look like they used a groove with a seal the way they did on the Nikola. How do they manage to go backwards in terms dust and water ingress protection?
Seeing this a year later I think there has been much improvement since then. Hero, Master, Master Pro, EX20/30 all much better in terms of overall construction, though of course none without their problems :)
@Supernova what happened when it overheated? Did it tilt you back? I overheat my nikola when I do aggressive sprints, I don’t think it’s the fans fault though. I overheat my v11 that way too.
@Supernova I’m confused, shouldn’t the thermometer detect the high temp and shut it down before it fries? Do you think the fan and the thermometer both malfunctioned?
Like I said, I'm still buying one. Although their build quality is bad from my experience most people don't have failures with their Gotway wheels. They just have the potential to require a bit more maintenance.
Thanks Marty was thinking about buying one of those. May as well be content with my MSP HT and Sherman. Oh when I been my knees I get a bad wobble what might that be, I've got about 500 miles under my belt? Thanks for any info.
This was the 1st generation EX-N and was a demo wheel for me. My personal copy of the EX-N is 2nd generation and the internal board & fan layout is different and better. Fan works great.
I have to add this comment. If that fan is sucking air in from the in side the housing and blowing it out that hole near the centre of the wheel for cooling then the whole housing is under a negative pressure and the air that being blown out needs to be replaced. Therefore all the air around the wheel is constantly being sucked in along with anything in the air otherwise you’ll have no airflow for cooling. The whole cooling system is based on air flowing into the housing from outside. That is air is filled with dust dirt mud moisture. They can’t have a waterproof wheel with the current design because they wouldn’t have any cooling. With the way they’ve designed the wheel they clearly have no intention of waterproofing.
@4:04 I agree, when veteran starts releasing lighter more agile wheels (veteran is a superb and very fast cruiser) im sure people will make a switch. I know i will
O well win some lose some. At least GW's consistent😳. I wonder if using some transparent waterproof caulking tape over the panel seams might help? esp for those in wetter climes🤔
Id rather have 1 strongly and quality built wheel than have 10 mediocre wheels to pick from. Leaperkim only started in 2020. I feel like its a very good start. Quality over quantity every time. Especially since we're the people testing and pushing the limits of these wheels.
older gotway wheels dont really suffer from dust/dirt/water ingress. the new begode wheels, ex,exn,m pro, force air out of the wheel for cooling. this creates a vaccum inside the wheel sucking dust/dirt/water in from any air gap around the wheel. good for cooling, bad for everything else
A loud fan is better than a quiet fan and burnt out the circuit board. Saw some brands, the fan is not loud, but the circuit board burns. This brand should have improved the wiring, and the fuses and seals on the wire's terminals are of better quality. Looking at the clip, not using the model produced in 2021, but the 2021 model still has a loud fan noise. Including the foldable handle that has not been improved to make it easier to hold.
Marty, Is the build quality any better or worse than the MSX? I've been feeling like the latest iteration of gotway wheels seems like a step down in terms of quality and thoughtfulness. Am I wrong?
In reality you don't. The vast majority of my wheels I just ride. Maybe there's some initial setup work to be done but otherwise they are mostly reliable. This is my experience of course. Your mileage may vary.
Hi Marty, you are the Quincy of EUC riders! The fan sounded just like the Dremel, lol. Do you think you could have gotten away with just adding the cardboard instead of cutting off part of the fan cover?
when you buy a Gotway before running it you open the sides panel and put a thin layer of silicone in the grove then you wait until it is dry then you put your panel back, so you wheel will get a better ip rating, after 3000km with my RS still no dust inside !! To be honest i do work in electronic and the circuit is fine they use white gue so the connector will stay connected just clipping connector is not enough, capacitor on the side and wire who are shielded is not a big deal, i saw worst on a board from a Samsung tv or amp from Yamaha, Pioneer, Sony...etc and this is product which are not even moving.
It's a nice wheel in fact of fun no worries, but these inside wiring.... No please No.... BMW have to make an EUC for sure that's building quality.... They have many to learn @ gotway. :)
Begode could replace a part of the plastic shell like the sides with Aluminium. Add some fins on parts of it to increase surface area, and make it a passive heat sink eliminating the need for fan's. Using the outside air stream to cool the motherboard. Additionall benefits would be a potentially stronger shell. It doesn't even have to be the entire sides. It could be a Plastic / Aluminium element composite design. And for esthetics the Aluminium can be anodized to black if needed. Just use the outer part of the shell... why have a hole with a duct system on the inside of the shell close to the tire with potential for water ingress.
So the fan can stop working after a ridiculous drop and we'll never find out until it overheats and it's too late, dirt and water seeping through every corner, the cables and electronics is a nightmare, the hollow motor and the bearings haven't been addressed but we're still supposed to buy a gotway/begode because of torque? After the MSX it seems they lost all respect for their loyal riders...
Not sure I like your solution for the fan. The efficiency of that item will be very compromised. Could thin the fan molding a bit, then add a steel washer spacer (rectangular washer with a rectangular hole) over the fan area so any pressure applied by the cover did not bear in an area causing the problem. I presume the cover could take up the extra thickness, I appreciate any adhoc solution to be a compromise . Pity Gotway wont up their game building it right, it shouldn't cost more than allowing this sloppy workmanship.
I agree that the fan will lose some efficiency but once it's covered again I think the difference will be marginal for this application... the cover will serve as the fan housing even if the interface isn't perfect and some pressure will be lost.
Yeah, I'm not super proud of my fix. This is a loaner wheel from EUCO. If it was my personal wheel I would have added a bit of aluminum as you suggest.
I understand peoples feelings about the wheel and build quality but your getto fix as you so put it is a bad idea. The fan housing is designed specifically to blow down onto the heat sink to keep the board from overheating. By cutting out a piece of the housing you are allowing the fan to blow outside of the housing and not perform its job. This can eventually cause your board to overheat. If the fan housing is tweaked and a blade broken, then the only fix is to replace the fan. If Gotway will not send you a fan under warranty for defects in material and workmanship then I suggest picking up a new fan and replacing it, they are a common fan and not hard to come by. Please do not put out content that can create bigger issues for other EUC owners of this wheel. Thanks, I follow your content and most of it is pretty good.
I think that on reflection, it might have been best to try the wheel out with the addition of the card/spacer, ie before reaching for the dremel and butchering the casing of the fan, which is of course there for both protection of the fanblade assembly and direction of the airflow created by it. It seems more of a design issue concerning the tolerance of the casing width rather than the relative fragility of the fan per se, as seems to be indicated by the end resulting fix. “To the man with the hammer, every problem looks like a nail”, lol! Joking apart, it should be a simple enough matter for both Begode and Leaperkim to tweak their casing designs to accommodate the extra ‘headspace’ required to rectify their respective known tolerance issues, one millimetre added or subtracted here and there would make a world of difference, but in fairness to both companies, I think they are each willing to improve their designs to overcome such shortcomings, most of which have become apparent only after the real-world influencers put them through their paces, more often than not in pretty testing conditions, which is indeed as it should be. Great to realise this did not put you off buying an otherwise great performing wheel.
Gotway...again and again... A reason I don't trust this brand. Thanks to show us the crap. I hope the makers will see your video, and will understand ... Build a lamborghini with Walmart tech inside is just insane, dishonest, and mostly dangerous for all. We ride just one wheel, we need extra care, this is not a toy, but a real transportation engine.
But why do i see in comparison videos it performs well and even the sherman keeps burning up? I don't feel safe with a Sherman the way I see them catch on fire all the time. After 2 weeks of solid research, this will not stop me from getting an ex.n. ALL the wheels have issues.
It does perform well. This video was more about the build quality. If you see my recent EX-N videos you'll see that they made some design changes which make it better.
@@ElectricUnicycles ooh I’m sorry. I been looking at these for a while and this post just came up for me. I will look at your more recent videos. Thanks!
@16:39 air flow decreased A LOT. You might now see increased temp instead. The air flow is based on a full tunnel, of its cut the air just escapes. Let's hope gotway don't use this ghetto fix lol
It's all theory isn't it? Please quantify exactly what the decreased air flow be. I'm waiting??? :-) I don't think the wheel will run any hotter, but I'll let you know if it does. An no worries, Gotway won't be making any fixes :-)
They clearly don’t take pride in their work , if they did, the inside would look just as good as the outside with proper layout and thought. Their formula today is the same as in the beginning. Same type of case, same method for fastening, just new design. Since the early days, the wheels have mostly been updated in the software and extras on the electronics, the overall choice of components as layout looks to be very similar indeed. As long as people keep buying, nothing will change.
Gotway should just go open source, sell the components, let the buyer assemble. Would be cheaper for everyone and buyers could ensure a quality assembly.
..nothing surprising to me looking inside the New “Begode” EXN.. expect nothing more for what people call “quality built” this is a after all a Gotway from the beginning, a a hobby class high performance EUC that every rider go for. It will never be a Ninebot Z😁! and it need not be one. I think when one buys a Begode this design and engineering quality is considered the best one can expect. One should not talked about fit quality anymore and just take this Begode built standard the benchmark for ultra high performance EUC.. nobody is going to built it like the Z anymore because EUC patent belongs to Gotway! Be safe ride within yr skill☺️
First, I commented that GW is worthless garbage (which it is), but then I decided to elaborate my thoughts on the situation a bit more. When your wheel breaks up while you're riding it, for no visible reason, and it constantly happens across the whole lineup... it means that their Q&A is not existent. And engineering is just simply bad. The PEVs that rely only on electronics to balance you on a single wheel while you're going 40mph+ should be sturdy and reliable as hell. It's not that hard to make a wheel that performs well, but it is incredibly hard to make it safe and well-performing at the same time. My Nik+ recently just died while I was doing 35kph (I posted on Facebook about it). Fucking burned out. I got some road rash on my side, nothing serious. I am always geared up, fine. But my conclusion here is pretty simple: I learn on mistakes, mine or others; it doesn't really matter - if it's the wheel's fault and not mine, I don't use that brand anymore. I don't want to risk my health and life by supporting a brand that doesn't care about its customers' safety. Thank you for the video Marty, it just confirms my thoughts about GW and other brands. The good thing here that you weren't riding it on a public road. Stay safe.
I guess it comes down to how you ride, but Gotway is the only game in town for a lot of riding styles. I'm glad you're happy with your other choices :-)

Please do not buy GotWay until they get better quality control. If you continue to buy their products, they have no incentive to increase quality control. GotWay: "Why should I care about how well they work, when they buy them anyway. As long as I sell more than I can produce. In addition, production capacity goes down with increased quality control. So f .....! Quality control"
dollar for dollar you can't beat the gotway wheels. They have more battery power, and motor power at the same prices as other brands. you can get a 1600ah MSX for 1550$.....nobody else beats that price and power. Or a Tesla V2 for 1200$ with over 1000ah, or a Mten3 with 460ah for 780$. I'm not sticking up for the EXN intake and fan design flaws, but most of the over 2000$ wheels seem to be experimental to say the least.

TI still hate the fact that my EX.N that I just ordered has some terrible quality on the inside that will likely cause problems at some point.
I think you are partly correct, but I don't think it's a strategy. I still believe it's a general incompetence and Chinese mindset of not caring about quality and workmanship.
I was gonna buy the EX.N, until I saw this. I now ordered the Sherman v2 👍🏻
Marty, thanks for this investigative work. I haven’t opened up my ex.n yet... I have to say that I’m really enjoying the ex.n, much more playful then the Sherman. The wheel moves out, I’m very impressed with it! It’s incredible..
Hi Mark. I can't wait to have my personal copy - love how this rides. The build quality is nothing new to guys like us :-)
Enjoy your copy :-)
I plan to buy a Nikola+ , it seems to me that it s the latest wheel from Begode/Gotway that is good in term of waterproofness and shell durability. Don't you think so Marty ?
Yes. I recently bought one. Love it
Yes, the Nik is a fantastic wheel. The MSP has always been a winner. But no doubt the round wheels seem the most durable.
The noise sounded like a MAJOR issue. Relieved it was just a design issue involving the fan. Thanks Marty & Ride Safe! 👍😎🙏
Exactly what is needed. Shell will act as blade guard. Zero reason GW didn't do this. They should have.
Marty.. You should put some gasket maker along the whole shell and it will form a seal, plus for the fan if you could wedge two pieces of wood slightly protruding above the fan and just add gasket maker to keep it in place.
Yes, if it was my personal wheel I would do more work in this area.
After Your modifiation, the airflow pressure can be lower than designed and therefore it can cause problems with heat. I think You should make new more upper located wall on the fan after cutting the old one.
I don't want to spend time doing work that isn't needed. If the wheel runs hotter than I'll make changes. If it doesn't, I won't :-)
Thanks for the suggestion.
Doesn't look like they used a groove with a seal the way they did on the Nikola. How do they manage to go backwards in terms dust and water ingress protection?
I know, right!
Seeing this a year later I think there has been much improvement since then. Hero, Master, Master Pro, EX20/30 all much better in terms of overall construction, though of course none without their problems :)
Crap 👍 begode 🤔 begone soon if QC department don't change really soon . Awesome video 👍 Thanks for the heads up .
This is exactly like the RS, I broke to fans already because of pressure from the side panels
Gotway's secret sauce is the motors. Quick acceleration and great torque i have zero concerns of a cutout when riding.
We should never have zero concerns of a cutout but I get your meaning :-)
Thought this was the wheel to go for...until you opened it up....
Like I said, I'm still buying one. Although their build quality is bad from my experience most people don't have failures with their Gotway wheels. They just have the potential to require a bit more maintenance.
If they're selling, no reason to spend more on them in quality. Its time for some competition for sure. Thanks for the vid!
Thanks brother 🙏 love your vids!! The best!!
Good morning Marty!
You really should have pulled of the black pastik case....for some more horrific findings ;-)
I know what's in there :-)
Thanks Marty was thinking about buying one of those. May as well be content with my MSP HT and Sherman. Oh when I been my knees I get a bad wobble what might that be, I've got about 500 miles under my belt? Thanks for any info.
Wobbles from bending down is common and will go away after more riding experience.
@@ElectricUnicycles Thanks Marty.
Agreed. Finish looks like crap. Considered replacing the fan?
Once Gotway started using fans, their implementation has never seems fully thought out :-(
@4:04 I agree, when veteran starts releasing lighter more agile wheels (veteran is a superb and very fast cruiser) im sure people will make a switch. I know i will
O well win some lose some. At least GW's consistent😳. I wonder if using some transparent waterproof caulking tape over the panel seams might help? esp for those in wetter climes🤔
If I had to ride in the rain, yes, I would tape all the seams.
always a joy to watch ... would love to ride with you some day
Maybe one day, you never know :-)
Check out the latest Wrong WAy RS 2021 tear down the internals are MUCH better.
not really.
Id rather have 1 strongly and quality built wheel than have 10 mediocre wheels to pick from. Leaperkim only started in 2020. I feel like its a very good start. Quality over quantity every time. Especially since we're the people testing and pushing the limits of these wheels.
Huh? What’s leaperkim?
@@darkstar4494 The other name for Veteran. In fact, it's the only brand name you see on a Sherman.
@@neurokinetik64ES ok that’s a new one for me
@@darkstar4494 someone hasnt been doing their homework 😉🤣
older gotway wheels dont really suffer from dust/dirt/water ingress. the new begode wheels, ex,exn,m pro, force air out of the wheel for cooling. this creates a vaccum inside the wheel sucking dust/dirt/water in from any air gap around the wheel. good for cooling, bad for everything else
What is the normal temperature for this tire? I get to 68 degrees, is this normal?
my EX, quite dusty on the inside even on the board
Am I wrong?
To be honest, I don't think it's fundamentally any worse. Seems about the same. And if you compare the quality to 3-years ago it's certainly improved.
My son “I bet you Marty has long sincere goodbyes”
Gotway the Ferrari of the EUC world. You spend more time under it then in it…
In reality you don't. The vast majority of my wheels I just ride. Maybe there's some initial setup work to be done but otherwise they are mostly reliable. This is my experience of course. Your mileage may vary.
Same crap, same company, different wheel......
beautiful street wheel guaranteed 50mph insane torque
Is the Veteran Sherman of any higher build quality (internally)?
Yes, the internals on the Sherman are solid.
Hi Marty, you are the Quincy of EUC riders! The fan sounded just like the Dremel, lol. Do you think you could have gotten away with just adding the cardboard instead of cutting off part of the fan cover?
Maybe. Hindsight :-)
when you buy a Gotway before running it you open the sides panel and put a thin layer of silicone in the grove then you wait until it is dry then you put your panel back, so you wheel will get a better ip rating, after 3000km with my RS still no dust inside !! To be honest i do work in electronic and the circuit is fine they use white gue so the connector will stay connected just clipping connector is not enough, capacitor on the side and wire who are shielded is not a big deal, i saw worst on a board from a Samsung tv or amp from Yamaha, Pioneer, Sony...etc and this is product which are not even moving.
can you give me a link to a video of changing exn pedals?
I don't have that video yet
cut side housing off is not a good solution as well. you may changed the air flow directions
I've seen fans with no sides. Air still moves front-to-back.
Now! the questions is does this crap worth over $2k or not
I am buying one :-)
It's a nice wheel in fact of fun no worries, but these inside wiring.... No please No.... BMW have to make an EUC for sure that's building quality.... They have many to learn @ gotway. :)
Hey Marty whats the tire size on the EXN?
20x2.75 - it's a huge tire
Honestly Marty.
If i had a extra Gotway that would be my project mod.
By the way I love my Gotway MSP really fun and I love the way they look.
@8:51 you will change your mind when you see the speaker membrane in direct exposure of the dirt
My Nikola was speakers exposed to the wheel. Over 2-years old. They still work :-)
Not sure I like your solution for the fan.
@@ElectricUnicycles Steel :-)
Thanks!
Oh, Gotway! When will you learn?
@16:39 air flow decreased A LOT. You might now see increased temp instead. The air flow is based on a full tunnel, of its cut the air just escapes. Let's hope gotway don't use this ghetto fix lol
It's all theory isn't it? Please quantify exactly what the decreased air flow be. I'm waiting??? :-)
I don't think the wheel will run any hotter, but I'll let you know if it does.
Well said :-)
Hardly any Chinese companies take pride in their work. That's just not their thing lol
@@B1gLe0 Agreed
they need to design a shell with the chip in it's own compartment sealed
Gotway is like my EX .... Love / Hate relationship.
Yep
Like mine too. Looks good on the outside, but messed up inside and requires all-to-frequent maintenance.
“ it was the best of wheels and it was the worst of wheels”
Nasty insides for the exn and the same feedback is consistent across various exn videos 😓
Stay safe.
I know the feeling all too well.
Why should that veteran change something that's not broken 🤔 in a sense I know it's not perfect but it's better than anything
I’m done with Gotway since 20018!
I guess it comes down to how you ride, but Gotway is the only game in town for a lot of riding styles. I'm glad you're happy with your other choices :-)
I’d love to have a gotway but I want to spend all of my time riding not fixing…Especially with the uk climate. I love the aesthetics of the exn. Like a 16x on steroids
I spend an extremely small amount of my time working on any Gotway wheels. YMMV.
Well finally the ride ISN'T everything anymore.
To me people who keep buying gotways right now don't value their life too much. Too bad you only have one
I think Gotway doesn’t do better quality because you all still buy it fully knowing, so ask yourself who truly is at fault ?
When there are alternatives to buy then we will stop buying them.
I can't believe they actually allow this to be mass produced. I'm not going to buy any more Gotway/Begode wheels until they get their $**t together.
I Still like it
Honestly, I expected to see a dead mouse in there, with its head hitting the fan
Their crap quality is old news
Do NOT ride in the wet until you fixed below.
If you want to see the true nightmare, remove the mother board (huge hole into wheel well poorly siliconed) and also the plastic cover at the bottom with ZERO silicone, just an open hole into wheel well. In the next one i guess.
@@MetatronsCube23 You are absolutely right if what is written on a piece of paper is the only thing that determines price / value. But quality and service are not free. So if you only shop based on specifications, you will give companies like Gotway an incentive to take shortcuts with anything that cannot be listed in the specification.
Before riding ANY gotway wheel, open it up and FIX IT 😖 YOURSELF
gotway not begode?
They still use the "GW" logo so it's OK to call them Gotway. You can use Begode and it won't bother me :-)
Gotway is dead to me. Especially after watching THAT video from Hsiang
Awesome but undependable? Sounds like a KTM motorcycle.
I wanna see a Baby Sherman.....something lighter and slimmer
