    I purchased this a few months after I purchased the kitchen aid espresso machine and it is the most perfect match. I was the barista when hosting Christmas and everyone was a big fan of the results of the two parried together.

    Great video. Nicely put together. Im glad you font have flashing lights and at least know how to professionally put together a video. I recently got this grinder for an amazing deal. I wondered why no one else reviewed it. But i honestly think as an intro machine at that price its great. And for the price i got nothing compares.. great job again and ill be around for more soon.

    Just a heads up, you can increase the timing on an espresso grind by rotating the lower ring.

    My Breville coffee grinder just went bad, i've only had it for 4-5 yrs/ What I hated about it was it would leave a mess with the grinds going outside of the container. This one looks like it's clean, no need to clean up afterwards would you agree?

    How do you remove the upper burr? The thing with the wire handle? I can't seem to turn mine if it's supposed to lock into place. Oh, you have to run the grinder until the few beans left in the burr are out.

    Do you know how KitchenAid defines a cup of coffee by ounces? My Oxo 8 cup coffee maker defines a cup as 5 ounces, so trying to see if the KA "cup" matches with the Oxo "cup."

    How is the retention? Like weighing 60g beans in vs what you get out? My cheapo grinder i have to bang on the sides to get all the grinds out. This looks like a straight shot from burrs to collection cup!

    THANK YOU A BILLION for this review!! Have you by chance tried the OXO burr grinder? similar design, but I'm curious about the noise. I REALLY appreciate you using the dB meter. I too am long time user of the CuisinArt grinder but it is at the end of its life and I'm just unsure about dropping $200 for a grinder. Thanks for any aidditional input!!

    • @aaronstestlab

      I have not tried the OXO. The way I see it, my old, noisy Cuisinart lasted like 8 years and was still going before I decided to upgrade. $200 may sound like a lot for a grinder, but for as much use as it gets I think it's worth it to splurge a little.

    FYI, if you've watched any grinder reviews by the talking heads of the espresso world on YT (James Hoffman, Lance Hedrick, Kyle Rowsell, et al), you know that this grinder is what's referred to as an "appliance grade" machine. For espresso purposes, that means it is marginal at best due to construction. That is, too much plastic to be truly espresso-capable. This would be ok for the cheaper espresso machines that use a non-pressurized portafilter. Also, beans are best stored in a true airtight container in a dark cupboard. Grinder hoppers (even the best) are not airtight enough. And if it's going to be anywhere near a window, the sun will not be kind to hopper-stored beans.
    Oh, and good comment about the cupboard height.
    Cheers on a well-rounded vid 👍

    • @aaronstestlab
      @aaronstestlab  Рік тому +11

      It's like anything I guess, you can keep spending more and more money for marginal improvements. Or, you can just find something that works well and be happy with it.

    • @ziptiefighter
      @ziptiefighter Рік тому +4

      @@aaronstestlab That's true. However, for espresso [and Turkish brew methods], there is a minimal level of capability for grinding. This grinder is an example of one which does not meet that minimum. Anyone who opts for this caliber of grinder for espresso is going to be disappointed. No beef with Kitchenaid. I have one of their stand mixers...a great capable and durable product.

    • @FawkesHD
      @FawkesHD Рік тому +6

      What does plastic have to do with it being able to be used for espresso? On its default grinder setting this grinds fine enough for my Gaggia espresso machine. I don't care about the hopper because I only grind when I make coffee. There is nothing wrong with this machine for normal espresso, obviously Turkish coffee requires super fine grind, so this most likely wont do well for that. With it being from Kitchenaid it also has a good warranty, so at this price point its a very good grinder.

      @@ziptiefighter Bought this grinder a few weeks back and it's grinding fine for espresso after setting the internal grind setting to the finest (1). I actually managed to choke the GCP a few times (shots taking +-50seconds on a 1:2 ratio with 18grams) when I also set the external grind setting to the finest (70). Do you have any videos where these talking heads actually review this machine or you just assume it can't be any good?

    • @LisaKnobel
      @LisaKnobel Рік тому

      I've managed to choke out my Breville The Infuser using the provided portafilter.
      I'm trying to upgrade to a bottomless portafilter. I'm having issues achieving pressure. So, it got a good clean out today.
      If that doesn't help, it's back to the old portafilter.

      Mine was not able to make fine enough espresso until I shimmed the burr with aluminum foil tape
      There’s a Reddit post about it, I used 2 layers on the bottom of the burr and now it’s fine enough for my machine to give proper shots
      You need a 10mm socket and ratchet to remove the burr for shimming

    What are your thoughts on the anti-static feature? I'm on my second grinder. The first one starting turning on and off intermittently by itself. @@jonslater4714 so I cleaned mine completely. I removed the burr basket thing and brushed it to get as much out as I could. Then I took it outside and blew out the grinds from the top of the hopper and turned it upside down and blew air into the bottom with my air duster and some canned air. I scraped off any caked on residue. I put it back together and it works like new. No static. It's been a week and it's still working good.

Since I messaged you, I cleaned mine In much the same way, except I vacuumed it and gently scraped the grounds away from the inner area between the “arms” of the burr grinder. I am also thoroughly washing the plastic dosing cup that I put on the scale to weigh the beans in case that is transferring any static to the beans. I’ll know tomorrow morning if it works. The grinder is okay as long as you don't mount the coffeeholder under the grinder....
    which is the whole idea of such grinders.
    If you mount the coffeeholder and grind,
    it will spit coffee all around the place, unusable for coffeeholders !!

    A bit disappointing to see that its all plasticky.
    I have the older Artisan grinder, which doesn't have any of the intelligent functions but the diecast metal and glass construction puts it miles ahead in terms of build quality/aesthetics.
    Similar feeling about the new espresso maker as well. Going from a dual boiler machine using Gaggia internals to a plasticky generic thing is a big disappointment from Kitchenaid.
