- DIY build of our lifted Chicken Coop! Watch to see it come together as our chickens grow up and move into their new home.
Raiding chickens is a new endeavor for us out here on the homestead. We have designed this raised coop and hen house with our particular environment in mind. The chickens are laying and appear to love the design. We will post updates and future improvements to this setup as the preadators and weather put it to the test.

Hey Group,
We started this project months ago, hopefully it is well received. Though I won’t make a habit of posting non-survival videos to this channel, I do hope for your feedback. I have little experience in filming build montages and this will be my first real attempt at becoming better at them. Survival projects ahead, hopefully this helps me better capture some of the structures and traps that will soon be featured on the channel. Hope y’all enjoy!

Ok brother. Your automatic yard bird Watering Hole should be modeled after the modern toilet. Water supply bulb float and Reservoir. Chickens drink water, level lowers, and Bob's your uncle, more water. How does that sound to you?

My huckleberry pup broke his leg last night. He is at the vet as I’m watching this. I thank you for the distraction.
I may not have chickens, or will ever need to build a chicken coop, but I can say I don't regret wacthing this one bit.
On the main door, a latch in the middle will not cut it. An opossum or raccoon will pull on the bottom left corner and cause the door frame to twist. Then it will stick it's head in and wiggle the rest of the way in. Getting out with the way you built the door frame, no problem, even easier. It will just push at the lower corner and slip out. latch the top and bottom. Still, job well done from Tim out of Kuwait. See yall soon.
Take a look at the door. Horizontal 2x4 keeps any torsional stressed from budging it. Look at it again.

My suggestion for predator protection would be to fix any attempts by predators to get in. They normally don’t find/tear a way in the first night. Also consider getting a rooster or guard goose to keep small predators like possums and birds of prey from eating your hens. They also double as a warning system for you. Good luck with the hens
Bob, you might want to build a small ramp or ladder up to the box. Keep the steps close spaced, I noticed the main ladder was for humans and the had to jump to go from step to step, they are just a little wide. Also you might think about putting a few more nest boxes on the walls and line them in the bottom with a thick layer of straw so they arent sitting on metal or in the wintertime cold wood but soft straw that they can heat up with body heat. Other than that a great job, heck I have lived in cabins that werent this well built. LOL

55 gallon drums to collect rain water, for chickens. Add solar motion lights to increase security. And mouse trap trip wires to scare off predators.

It's a fine coop, Bob, first rate! I especially like the re-purposing of materials, the solar-powered self-starting fans, the egg yield (which shows you're doing a lot of things right), and last but not least Huck's posse! I couldn't see all the construction joinery, so this may be accounted for already, but one suggestion I'd offer would be some angled bracing here and there, since that aluminum and tubing roof can act like a sail and multiply any wind force, turning those cedar posts from the vertical sides of squares into the angled sides of flattening trapezoids. Say a few 3 foot lengths of 2x6 or even 2x4, running from the deck to the posts, or from the posts up to those 2x6 headers, especially in the corners, attached to the posts with maybe 4" lag screws, to stay fastened even if the cedar should soften a bit and allow smaller fasteners to work loose. I could tell by his expression there at the end that the Huckmeister had already thought of this, but was perhaps a bit too tired to go into it. He'll no doubt bring it up after he's rested a bit.
It has proven sturdy thus far, but it hasn’t been tested by the wind just yet. I thought long and hard about additional reinforcement for those uprights, may still need them. I tightened the base 2x6 over the fence wire and pulled them down to create tension from top to bottom. Solid, but it could work loose and provide some five eventually. Definitely more to do on this project.

This is great! Heck is got some new friends. Nice build! I love chickens. I have 3 egg laying experts that will live a long and happy life with my kids. They are actually pets. We only eat the eggs. Got a Rhode Island, barred rock, and a Delaware. Next I want an Americana.😃🍺🤙🦃🍁

hi, a greeting and some advice from a chicken farmer from Tuscany!
If you move the nests where the hens lay eggs to an outer wall and make a hatch to match, you can collect the eggs without having to enter. The same for water and food and whoever goes to look after the chickens will not get dirty with .... their shoes.
Hens sleep best perched on 1.5 inch cylindrical stakes, if you put the wide planks on they will fill up with droppings.
Hey man, glad to see a new video. I know it’s not your usual, but it’s really well shot and edited. And I do think this counts as a survival video, just more long term survival.

Looks good Bob. Only thing I might add is to enclose your north wall to block the northern wind. After you treat the floor use a leaf type much. Makes great fertilizer for the garden

Chickens will eat anything red. If you go to the grocery store and get them to give you the old fruit and vegetables, the chickens love that stuff. And

Trying for this.
I have raised chickens for many years. They can be cannibalistic. Watch them closely, if you notice them pecking at each other you can use dog nail clips and clip the tips of their beaks to dull them.
They also tend to eat their own eggs, we always added a false wooden egg to their nesting boxes to discourage egg eating as the hard wood egg won't break.
Hopefully we never have they issue.
Definitely going to do the wooden egg.

I've never had chickens but I think your coop turned out great. They don't seem to mind those steps. Do they fly out or do they hop going both ways? Kind of cute. And those are the quietest chickens I've ever seen. They're happy and there's no surprise about that. Yes on the other project videos. And Huck steals the show, as always. ;)
They hop both ways. Wondered if I would need a ramp, but they seem happy with it.

You asked something about the water.
Can you find an IBC ?
If you put and hose on the outlet and place that end in a shallow bucket it will fill the bucket time and time again without flushing it all in one time.
Just make sure that you reach about an inch of water level and if the water is under that, that the next gulf that comes out does not go over the edge.
You might have enough water for about a month or so.
Mind yourself and stay safe
For a feeder get a 55 gallon Rubbermaid trash can and 4 4” 90 pvc elbows. Cut off the coupling end of the elbow and install in holes in the trash can leaving the bottom of the elbow 1” above the base of the trash can. Can hold 150 pounds of feed.
Not a bad idea.
Bob- try to tie in with a bakery to collect their egg shells and burned baked bread. I fed my chickens on the cheap that way 9 Also bought feed & grain) and the shells I dried and "powdered" up into small pieces for calcium. The chickens never broke or ate any of their eggs either.
Using crushed clam shells from creek. Still looking for feed alternatives. Will check.
adding to this, if you're near some coffee shops, see if you can get their spent coffee grounds. they're a good addition to the sand bedding as an insect repellent. and whatever you shovel out along with leftover eggshells and chicken poop, make for great nitrogen source for compost.
I’m glad you used CDX for sheathing rather than chipboard.
The chipboard seems to swell out here after a time.
Great video Bob! Appreciated the idea of reclamation and reuse of other builds/ materials as part of this coop, it's a way to keep costs down and some character or texture of past nostalgia makes its way into modern work. Like past and present can work together. When the defenses are tested I hope you will update us on how it goes, and I hope the chickens thrive a darn long time!

You will need some diagonal bracing for wind load. There should be plenty of examples you can adapt from on UA-cam. Great to see you again.
Wire mesh was dickered down when attaching boards. There is no give in this design.

Might not be a survival video per say, but IMO having a resource like chickens certainly could become a crucial component in a survival situation! Advice. I left diagonal bracing off until I knew how well the fencing wire could be tightened. The boards snugged it down until it twanged and made the coop rock solid. I still have folks asking about the diagonal bracing...
@@BobHansler If that fencing wire is fastened pretty good, it will add shear strength to it the same as sheathing on enclosed structures. Sounds like you figured that out w/out my 2 cents though! I cringe when I hear wire fencing, had my fill putting that up years ago when my buddy & I raised/trained cavalry horses for Civil War reenacting!

your dog is so well trained my dog tries to take scraps off of any possible surface and is known to lick plates when were not paying attention

That’s a chicken condo! So funny watching the chics chase your dog. You’ll love the chickens, they’re easy and so beneficial. Must say, the Easter eggers I’ve had didn’t lay more than two years or so. I miss the colorful eggs. Our chocolate egg layer was aptly named “Crazy Eyes” and met her demise by falling in a horse watering trough.

We are doing well. There are 3 meat birds in the bunch, but meat isn’t a need out here. In it for that awesome egg.
@@BobHansler I don’t blame you one bit. The meat bird comment was a tease cause everyone did them this past year. In fact we had a hard time finding them. Everything was scarce. You know I’d been showing my grands wild plants and what not. They’re now all either Cub scouts or Girl Scouts and helping teach their friends. It’s pretty cute. Here in the UK we used to use what are called staddle stones under hay Rick's to prevent rats and rodents from getting in. They could work well under the legs of your deck to help stop anything climbing up the legs

If you put metal flashing around your upright posts it will keep most predators from climbing up them. Yep.

You might want to look into getting some Diatomaceous earth, it can help with Dust baths for your chickens to keep them from getting mites, ticks or other bugs. Great coop in my personal opinion.
They’ve been making use of the ashes in my fire pit. Is the earth better?
