How would you plant the Big Shallow? 🍀 Also don't forget to smash that like button! 💪
I think it will go well with a carpeting plant, some moss on the rocks(like you said), mimosa aquatica to get out of the water.
That is a great question. I would think some plants that grow above the water, nice carpet plants and lots of red.
Since you have already decided on hardscape, I guess you could just go with carpet for this Iwagumi style layout. If you had chosen a classic nature aquascape with rocks and wood protruding out etc, then a lot of options with emersed plants...
You are so right about Dojo without substrate. I ended up making a wooden Dojo the exact same dimensions as my tank, and threw in 50lbs of sand to mimic substrate and do a better plan..
Love the GTA reference in the video 🤣
Do something really unique Mark, something you would enjoy and love, that's what matters the most.
Carpet with Cuba and few hairgrass background with Rotala Green,Hra,Natans,Pogostemonus Erectus mid ground Rotala Bonsai or Indica,Bacopa Carolina, Reineckii,Repens etc.
Yes, please talk more about plants and how you choose, why, etc . Please also talk about how you quarantine/not quarantine plants before planting and why. Many thanks in advance, Mark!
Will do!
Yes, please discuss all your thoughts on the planting of this tank and why you choose the plants you did.
Cool! Will do that!
Yayayayayay been waiting to see what you did with this tank can’t wait to see it planted too!
Me neither 😬
so excited to see the finished product!
Awesome scape, MJ! I’m going to buy an Oase BioMaster Thermo Canister Filter 600. Also, thank you making your video about the 800.
I’ve recently decided to get Cichlids! I’m very very excited about starting anew and to start aquascaping for my cichlids, been doing a lot research into them too. Thank you for your Big Shallow scape! very inspirational.
Nice Mark! Looking forward to the next video, can’t wait to see the complete process and see it finished after a few months.
You and me both!
love the scape! can't wait to see the progress. Making me want to set up a tank with those specs. Keep up the great work :D
If we focus on the reflection already seen on stones I’m sure there gonna be wonderful colors under this light. Congrats MJ. Good luck 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Yes! Thank you!
Good job man, cant wait for plants
I really like the simple setup. And the filter... the best i´ve ever tried. Keep it up m8.
Thanks buddy! Yeah the filter is pretty amazing!
Extra tip. Kosten 1 of 2 euro.
Thanks Paulus!
Great production and update, love the layout 👌👏
Awesome! Thank you!
Awesome! Love your choice of rocks and hardscape design. You are a very patient person, hardscaping for 9 days - wow! Impressive! Looking forward to plants and fish, hope to see you soon.
Yes, I would be interested to see a video on your plant choice process.
Looks really good! Love the stones.
Me too!
Looking really nice 😇
Thanks a lot 😊
Good progres all the best
Pięknie Ci to wyszło. Robi wrażenie. Jak dojdą rośliny to będzie OGIEŃ. Łapka w góre i czekam na kolejny Twój film.
Pozdrowienia z polski
I was really hoping none of the rocks would float up on you, glad it worked out!!! Looks great!
Looks awesome MJ, nice work.
The filter floss and fine filter mesh should be at the top of the filter so it's the last section the water hits. The pre filter will stop any organic waste entering the main filter compartment (that's what it's designed for).
So the media will do all the work then it gets polished by the filter floss before entering back into your tank.
Mine is setup with Purigen covered by filter floss in the top compartment 👍
Thanks Karl! Yeah I've been hearing different stories about setting up all the different compartments. I will keep it like this for now, and see how it works.
Wow what a hardscape , beautiful 🤩 those rocks are sick! Love it 😍 yea plz do the video on how you choose plants, im curious
Fantastic video, I love the way you are making hardscape
You easily have one of the best aquascaping channels going on UA-cam.
Fully agree!
Thank you very much!😎
definitely would love to see a plant choosing video. This is the hardest part for me; choosing the plants and laying them out. I think they go hand and hand.
Cant wait to see this planted, definately would want to see your plant choice reasons/factors
Great update Mark I would like to see a video on how you choose your plants! I always set up my hardscape and then imagine in my head what plants would look good where! Then it’s time to spend money and load up on plants 🌱 I love that Frodo stone the texture and detail is stunning 😍
Thanks Nick! Happy you like it! Yeah I think my process for choosing plants is very similar to yours. 😊
I’m curious to see what plants you decide to use though! Seeing someone else’s creativity gives me ideas I may not have thought of!
I am absolutely enjoying the show! Yes I am interested how you choose the plants. ( and I can’t believe my biomaster setup is exactly same as yours with different media on my 60P )
👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
That's awesome! Happy you like the videos!
Thnx! 😊
Finally whe can see the hardscape of the Shallow! . So sneaky to already showing us a little corner of the tank in your previous video and posts, very frustrating haha. This will be an amazing tank!
Sorry to keep you waiting so long 😬
Great choice with elderly stone. I have a tank with elderly stone and it's one of my favorites that I've made.
Awesome! Where can I see that tank? Is it on your channel?
@@MJAquascaping It's not on my chanel yet, I haven't been able to make videos recently. It's a smaller scape in a scapers tank 35l. I will send you a DM on Instagram so you can see it. :)
Yeeeees finally got to see what you did! Wasn’t expecting iwagumi! It looks amazing so far Mark! Those rocks though 😮 wish I could get Frodo stone here, my dream rocks! I can’t wait to see how you plant this! I’m happy for you man! It’s been cool seeing your channel grow and get better every time! I would like to see your thought process on plant selection! Exciting times!
Thanks a lot Darren! 😊
@@MJAquascaping you’re welcome Mark! 😁
Looking good! Great progress so far. Greenaqua is using a lily pipe on the neo flow from one of dennerle hob filter.
Yeah I have that lily pipe as well, but I think that one only fits on the 12/16 neo flow. 😊
Shadows and fear! Looks great 👍
Thank you!
Fantastic scape,
Thank you Ray!
Lovely hardscape 😊
Thank you! 😊
That's a beautiful tank. I like the stone too, never seen anything like that before. Looking forward to seeing what it's going to look like. I think that would look fab with some immersed plants growing out of it. God, I need that tank now, I've already started thinking about what I'd do haha. Love that light shimmer btw
Thanks a lot David! Yep I agree, you need that tank as well 😬
Nice work
Thank you! Cheers!
You are an inspiration Bro... Keep up the good work :)
Thank you so much 😀
You got top quality products there. I like the fact that you didn`t rush the aquascaping process. Usually what we see on UA-cam is professionals that complete a scape in 20 minutes. But acctually they rehearsed the entire process in advance. Your clip says it like it is. It takes time. I`ve used Purigen in the past, you`ll love it. I`m curious for the CO2, if you`ll go for diffuser or reactor. I hope reactor, don`t know why, but i suspect that`s why you left the hoses a bit too long. I`ll follow and find out. Congrats, loved the video.
I think it's so important to take your time, and the end result is usually a lot better as well.
Why are you hoping for a reactor? Got any experience with that? 😊
@@MJAquascaping i do have a lot of experience with reactors. I built some, also bought 3 models. I prefer to use them because when you shoot videos or pictures of the aquarium, you no longer have bubbles everywhere. Especially if you go macro on a shrimp or plant. Another benefit is that the disolve rate is better, co2 consumption is less. The downsize is that the reactor needs maintainance (hence buy a good one, i recomment Sera Flore), and another, is that it reduces the flow about 20-30%. But with your Oase, no problem! You should try one and make a video about it. Oh, did i mentioned that you don`t have to clean it with chlorine, like difussers.
oh, forgot... another big plus... it`s not an equipment visible in the aquarium
ok, ok, one more. You don`t need a lot of CO2 pressure. Meaning that even a citric acid and backing soda instalation will do the trick.
Thanks for your insights! It would definitely be interesting to test a reactor, and not having a CO2 mist would be a big plus!
Wow..shallow tanks are my favourite...❤️❤️❤️so amazing work legend.. rocks are so beautiful ..so excited to see plants in this beauty ❤️❤️..goldy singh ❤️🙏
Thank you so much 😀
Try adding the new piece that Aquario have made that includes a surface skimmer and a sort of Lilly pipe, that might slow the flow down. Looking forward to seeing it planted
Yeah I might try that!
been waiting for this... finally the hardscape suspense is over :-)
Very nice...i really like your videos
Glad you like them!
Love the scape 😍 especially the big rock that sticks out! Can’t wait until you plant it! And I would love to see a video about how you decide which plants! Where do you order your plants from?
I’m very lucky to have my plants sponsored by dennerle plants 😊
You can reduce the flow of the Biomaster with the little blue lever of the inlet and outlet cap. That way you are acting directly on the openings of the tubes. Good job!
Single filter with that much water volume and those dimensions, why would you want to reduce the cycle/flow rate, you'd wind up with dead spots? Put a spin outflow on if needs be
@@davidlevett4347 I didn't tell him to reduce the flow. I just mentionned it was possible to do it without the regular Biomaster outflow as he is using the Neo one. ;)
Klasse 👍😊
I love Purigen -- it definitely works to remove waste and to polish the water -- but rinse the little pouch well before placing in your filter or you will get what I call a "Purigen Storm," which will take a day or longer to clear.
I didn't have to rinse it 🤔 I bought 250ml bottle of purigen and it went directly to filter.
You used probably a bag with bigger holes, so the grains could come out to your aquarium. Should use something like pantyhose, or very fine filter mesh.
Yeah I rinsed it! 😎
I actually just used neo soil for my first proper aquascape. My tank is a little over three months old and so far haven't seen a need to add the root tabs yet. I did a two week dark start as well and was nice to skip all those early water changes.
Nice one! Plants are growing well I guess then?
@@MJAquascaping yep! So far so good. Had to do a couple trims on the stems already
Oh well, I thought this was going to be a shallow Salt water build.
But I will hang around to see how it goes.
Sorry 😬
@@MJAquascaping maybe your next tank then?
I have enjoyed this build, can't wait to see it fully finished.
@@_Andrew._ I’m not really into saltwater right now, but who knows in the future!
Oh Made in Korea Neo soil.... very Good.... I am Korean
I'm very curious about the performance of this soil!
@@MJAquascaping ^^*
I think the aquario products look great!
Absolutely!
1) I think you need more small stones, pebbles to get details, it's quite bold (right front corner, the foreground etc )
2) always wash the media before use 😀 or you will have a lot of "dust" stuck at the bottom of the filter. And you want more of purigen, that thing is just magical 🤯
3) I also use this Soft media, but they had effect just for couple months. After that, they act just like the Pure type, or the others porous media.
4) that filter is overkill for this tank 😂 but the bigger - the better 🤑😎
Looking forward for next step 🤝👍
I was also thinking of adding more details, but I think the plants will eventually cover smaller rocks anyway. And thanks for sharing your experience with the media! I don't expect the effect to last long, especially with these rocks...
@@MJAquascaping the rocks does (maybe) nothing with pH, but after frequently water changes, the media just loses its ability. I'm considering to get RO system, my tds is over 300ppm, which make plants grow quite harder that they could. Do you use RO water?
I have used RO in the past, but it was a very slow system, so even getting 20 liters of RO was taking ages. So I just got sick of the hassle, and my tap water is quite okay.
Nice video, just a few comments from my experience with this filter and cycling: adding purigen before the tank is cycled will possibly delay bacterial colonisation as it outcompetes the bacteria for nitrogenous compounds. I couldn’t figure out why I had zero ammonia, despite adding to start the cycle, until it clicked that it was the purigen sucking it up and preventing the cycle from starting. I think it could also suck up your nitrate fertilisers, so to be honest I wouldn’t use it in a planted tank. Carbon might be a better alternative for chemical filtration to get crystal clear water. Pond guru says not to add floss to the top tray as it traps fine detritus behind it, where it can collect in the biomedia section and clog the pores that are used by the bacteria. It’s better to let it flow through and be caught when the second time passes through the first floss. Cheers and looking forward to seeing this ‘scape progress!
Oh and is the extra equipment the Oase inline UV? I just added this to my tank 😂
Thanks a lot for sharing your experience with purigen Christopher! I will do some water test this weekend and see from there what's the best thing to do. And no it's not a UV 😬
Nice. Let's talk about planting. I would twist the Mainstone a little bit to the Front.
What kinda scale do you recommend for a narrow tank
New subscriber here, Loved and enjoyed your video😊
Thanks for subbing!
08:20 yes please haha!
MJ, could you measure how loud in decibels Oase filter is? Thank, by the way - really great scape!
I've used some crappy iphone app to measure it, and it's about 53 decibels.😬
@@MJAquascaping my iphone x is showing 36-38db and I am complaining..
Great job Mark! I think the Iwagumi style really works well for this shallow aquarium. I'm looking forward to see what plants you use. I have my suspicions as to what you might use. :-)
Thanks Steve! Now I'm wondering what you think I will be using 😆
@@MJAquascaping Well, it only a guess, but I'm thinking you might keep it minimal as use just one or two carpet plants like Cuba, Monte Carlo or perhaps dwarf hairgrass. Being a shallow tank, having taller stem plants at the back wouldn't really work and also you would lose the perspective of that huge awesome rock which is the main focal point. That's just my guess though. I'm sure that whatever you decide to do will be better than what I imagined. ;-)
Hi Mj, I have purchased eheim 350 filter for my 10 gallon tank boz everyone suggested me that always buy a bigger one but the problem is that the water flow is too high for this dimension 40x30x30 cm its almost create whirlpool in my tank so i cut down the flow by 20% closing the outflow valve so please tell me this is the right way to control the flow or should i do something else and I don’t want to use spray bar( aesthetically not looking good)currently i am using neo flow pipes. Reduce the flow rate with value will it damage the pump?
Closing it a little bit is usually okay, but closing it to 20% can't be good for any filter.
Does your 850 catch air somewhere? Mine constantly catches air but don't know where.
Yep I also get a few air burps every now and then.
Very nice , you use “regular” aquarium glass? Looking good
Yes I do!
My God where you bought that rock .what company sell that can you tell name
Very beautiful stones! How heavy are the stones together?
Roughly 35kg
@@MJAquascaping Thank You for your fast anwer. Where did you buy the stones? In an internet shop?
@@carstenkallmann8756 www.aquariumdesignshop.nl/
I definitely want to know which plants you decide to use and why? We all know it will look amazing but I want to know the “why” behind the choices.
Cool! I will incorporate that in the video!
Hoe bevalt het dark mountain substrat? Aanrader of niet perse?
Prima spul, perfect als je wil ophogen. Verder niet echt een toegevoegde waarde.
THE SHIMMERS OH MY...
I spent 4 months on my hardscape for my 128L 80cm aquarium xD But i have a lot of trees with a forest type of scape too.
Btw, i have biomaster 350 and have a lot of issues with flow. In the beginning, the biomaster had good flow but it quickly deteriorated and i even tried to cut many more holes in the plastic pre-filter inlet and expand the holes and even put 10PPI sponges in the prefilter to increase waterflow too. It helps only for a while. Let me know if you experience something like that.
Kudos to you for being so patient! I could never wait 4 months I think 😂 Sorry to hear that... I will keep an eye on the flow, and I'll let you know if anything strange happens.
@@MJAquascaping I actually just found the issue as i wrote you. I have a filter guard on the inflow that on the inside had a crapton of fish poop. Anyways, since you can't adjust the flow in this pump, if it's too much for you, i know a little trick with the JBL quick connectors that lets you control the flow
Frod9 stone never messed with my waters hardness when I used it 🤷♂️
That's good to know!
Really good, how long will you cycle it?
Without plants about 10 days, and then after another 10 days I will start introducing the cleaning crew!
@@MJAquascaping does this mean that the plants will be planted after twenty days?
No no 😊 the tank has been cycling since Monday. And I will plant it next week, Wednesday or Thursday I hope 👍
Ps. Trouwe volger van je kanaal 😉👍 cheers! Groetjes uit België 🇧🇪
Hey Daan!
Would you recommend the neo soil?
So far I'm happy with it, but it's only been 2 weeks, so i cant say much about it.
Very Nice looking aquarium!!! I'm also a plant guy, but my tank is more like a dutch style..... Ik don't understand why you pack your filter like pondguru, that's Nice for low/non planted tanks i think. My opinion for planted tanks is to get more nitrates from your filter because otherwise you need more in your fertiliser.
Kind regards
Thank you Henk-Jan! How would you setup the filter? Or what would you do differently? 😊
@@MJAquascaping
I'm not a professional, but i would use Just the sponges ( i use it now only in my bioflow m from juwel) I think that the Bottom layers of the tank do more biological filtering than a filterpump, and the plants are also very good filters i guess.
Yeah I do agree with that! I think sometimes we make things too complicated. Indeed the substrate and the plants already do a very good job at filtering the water.
@@MJAquascaping
Exactly 😀
I looked at the articles from Charles budendorf @ aquainfo.net for filtering and i tried it in my tank and got less algy (maybe some green Dots in the frontglass when my bioco2 is ending) 👍
Hoeveel kg stenen zijn dat?
30kg ongeveer 💪
Why did you add more aqua-soil to cover _all_ the black lava rock? I noticed you tend to insist on either using mono-layers of substrate that are separated vertically only showing 1 on top or separated into sections next to each other when there is 2 substrates in top layer. Mixing different size/colors of substrate can add scale & texture which is one of the most important aspects of aquascape‼️
You should chat with MD Fish Tanks or Serpadesign, I feel like they could give you some good knowledge to push you the last small stretch into elite scaper territory! 💪🏽💯
The filter is setup wrong. Supposed to be coarse then fine sponge at the bottom then bio media in the rest with the top tray being the fine filter wool and purigen.
The reason why mecanical filtration ends before the bio media is that the water won't be carrying particles. Thus the bio media won't be clogged. Plus the Oase has a bio filter. If you put filter floss on top, all the fine dirt will eventually travel thru bio media. And stay there.
so rich bro. Tank like these must be expensive. Where you get all these money from? any tips
It is very expensive indeed, I could not do this without some of the sponsors.
I believe with the light that you are having, Glossostigma would look good with the aquascape and I dont think so u have Glosso in your collection.
True! I don't have glosso yet!
@@MJAquascaping some bolbitis heudelotii in darker areas and rotala vietnam hra behind the beautiful frodos.
Yes!!! Explain your thoughts on plant layout! I think I broke your like button by smashing it repeatedly... sorry! 😉
😂
in my opinion taller hardscape is better for shallow theme
Yeah maybe you are right, if my current idea doesn't work out that well I will go for something taller.
am I the only one who is trouble finding the gallon number of this aquarium ?
