  • Completing my collection of Carenado aircraft, I finally get around to looking at the Carenado Piper Arrow III in Microsoft Flight Simulator - taking it for a fly at Alderney in the Channel Islands. Along the way we manage to induce an unrecoverable spin (very rare for Carenado!), but otherwise - a wonderful aircraft for those just starting out in Flight Simulation. Looks great, sounds great, and what is there works well.

    I have had my eye on the Carenado Piper Arrow III for quite a while. It was exactly what I expected. Definitely not a study level aircraft, but so much FUN to fly and I just love the looks and lines of this plane. Not as fast as I was hoping for. One concern is the lack of liveries for this bird ... so buyer be informed of this if liveries are important to you. Would I buy it again knowing this: Definitely Yes.

    I had the pleasure of flying a real Arrow some years ago. It was great for getting somewhere in a hurry.

    Wow - Black Square really did set the new standard with their Analog Bonanza pack... This is a nice looking plane, but the Black Square Bonanza is in a league of its own. PS - I don't work for them

    Ooops, you left the mag switch on. The next person that checks the prop could get a surprise!
    That aside, thank you for the excellent sim videos! We have a 1968 Arrow 180 in my flying club. This evaluation video proves the Carenado Arrow will be a good sim add on for me.

      I did! I will be the one getting the surprise :) And that's why I should really start writing some checklists, and following them! It's getting more and more important as the aircraft increase in fidelity.

    I've enjoyed Carenado aeroplanes since my FSX days and have seen no reason in MSFS to change that opinion. Sure, they are not "study level" but my one real flight piloting a Cessna 172 was based on my flight experience with Carenado aeroplanes. That's good enough for me to have a load of fun. 😁

    There is something with the views of the carando aircrafts that I can't stand. When looking right in the cockpit I want to see the side of the right door, not just looking straight out the window. Also the forward views are weird to me. I am not the big fan but I like the release any way. I guess you can change the default use per airplane? 🙂 Great video by the way!

    I've flown the real Arrow around Seattle and it's a very forgiving and a blast to fly... but for flight simulation, I enjoy Carenado aircraft, regardless of their lack of "study level" accuracy because it's just fun. I don't have the time to set up an Airbus for a 3 hour flight, but I do have time for a fun flight around Friday Harbor (KFHR) airport before bed.

    I might have not heard you correctly but did you apply opposite rudder in the spin? I think you said something about pulling back….?

    • @jonbeckett
      @jonbeckett  Рік тому

      It's a known hole in the MSFS flight model - if you get an aircraft into that specific situation, you can't get it out. You can do it with a negative G pushover into a spin too - unrecoverable in lots of aircraft :)

  • @Ngamer834

    I was tempted by the Justflight arrows at one time but not so much anymore. I bought their Warrior which I don't mind flying sometimes just not mad keen on it little boring for me and not much fun even with the slightest turbulence. I can't put my finger on it I just find Carenado planes more fun to fly perhaps them looking so good is a factor in this.

    • @jonbeckett
      @jonbeckett  Рік тому

      I tend to find the Carenado planes are a bit dumbed down - but then sometimes you just want to go fly in the simulator, and not simulate a "real world" session to the last detail :)

      @Ngamer834 Рік тому

      @@jonbeckett It is interesting when sim planes need more care and attention. Perhaps (maybe) their sim performance more accurate to the real thing. Good that we have this within the sim and I do like a variety of add ones. Me personally not being a pilot I can be happy with something broadly believable to be honest I am unlikely to know. Some other youtuber did the PC12 and whilst he never claimed to actually fly them he did compare some of the flight performance figures within a flight and Carenado did a fairly decent Job. Obviously not so realistic in other ways like how you can treat the engines and get away with it.

  • @victorcroker2765
    @victorcroker2765 Рік тому +1

    Carenado has always had very nice looking aircraft but their flight dynamics has always been, in my opinion, suspect . (for lack of a better word.) That unrecoverable spin is not supposed to happen if the proper technique applied (12:40) Looking forward to the "Cadillac" of Piper aircraft for Flight Sim...A2A!

    • @jonbeckett
      @jonbeckett  Рік тому

      Of course - Carenado aircraft are approximations - aimed squarely at the middle of the market :) For the price, they are great.

    Thanks for your videos Jonathan, in them I always learn. I would also like to learn how to operate the pitch or propellers, (blue lever), but all I find on you tube is how the propellers work and the governor, I did not find anyone to explain how to operate the blue lever. Could you? Thanks again.

    • @jonbeckett
      @jonbeckett  Рік тому

      It various depending on aircraft design. RPM is the speed at which the propeller is being driven (not the same as torque being provided by the engine). The reason to tune it is in thinner air, spinning it fast may not result in more thrust - it's complicated :) The easiest example is a boat propeller - where if you spin it too fast it no longer grabs the water, and "cavitates".

    How do you get the HSI to pick up the VOR, or the LOC/GS? When I switch to VLOC on the 430, the CDI doesn't change. I entered in a known ILS frequency and nothing shows on the HSI

    I use this one regularly, for as forgiving as Carenado aircraft can be to use this one's got some spice to it, off airport excursions aren't recommended as it requires a decent runway to takeoff and the low wings can impact terrain, but it can get you from A to B in a jiffy in relative comfort, this is the gentleman's GA aircraft :P.
    The only issues i have are the top Garmin screen cuts off at the bottom, i think it might be an issue with the Working Title add on i haven't checked the default, but it comes with 2 screens so that's minor, the auto pilot display is pretty dim and impossible to read in some conditions, and i find this with a few aircraft in MSFS but pitch is very sensitive, i've been lowering my sensitivity recently to counter it but i could pull a cobra maneuver in this and recently the Caribou, maybe that's true to life i don't know but it makes it difficult to fly smoothly in the game.

      @jonbeckett  Рік тому

      Yeah - there are a few aircraft that got monkeyed up following the recent sim update. I'm sure it will all get fixed eventually.

    Hi Jonathan, I like the level of detail explained in your videos. The Piper was one of my first planes purchased for the Simulator by Just Flight, still a favourable plane to this day. The Carenados are very stylish but like the Antonov only available in the marketplace inside the Microsoft/Asobos Simulator & believe it or not I can't purchase them. as They haven't got my payment details correctly, if you know how I can fix this, would love to hear from you. I did manage a temporary fix one day by calling Microsoft but lost the number. I also watched your splendid video of the Antonov with great interest as I want to add my few pounds towards an excellent cause. Anyway just like to say a big Thanks for the education. You are a scholar & a gentleman. ❤️ 💙 💚

    • @jonbeckett
      @jonbeckett  Рік тому

      The marketplace in Microsoft Flight Simulator uses your XBox account - which is confusing for most, because they are playing on PC - not xbox. Visit account.microsoft.com/billing/payments on the internet. Your xbox acccount is tied to your microsoft account - which is the one you are logged into Windows as (or at least you SHOULD be logged into Windows as).

      And the interior visuals are very different. Personally I like the Carenado one better. No this is not everyone's cup of tea, but I like both. Maybe for realism the Justflight, but for pure visuals and fun, the Carenado is a very good choice.

    • @jonbeckett
      @jonbeckett  Рік тому

      Not everybody wants study level. The "serious" crowd that are perhaps learning procedures for their own interest, or to complement real-world training are a small minority when compared to the entire community.

      @@jonbeckett I understand that… but how many GA do you have study level? NONE. at least for XBOX.
      And doing again and again the same airplane by just changing the pretty box… is just easy money for Carenado, or any other!! Very very limited.
      So the propose of this game, is just that… a game like GTA. Not a simulator.
      At least show us what you (Carenado and others) can do, give us also a study lever aircraft if you are able to. Give us the toy, and give us the airplane with some extra money… a light version and a hardcore one. But easy money is more simple. Right!?

    I bought this plane and have been fully disappointed since. Not worth almost $50. Not even close. The generic MS planes are better, lol. The sound is terrible, the physics are terrible. But the 3d model looks ok and that seems to be all that matters. Just Flight was supposed to be one of the better devs, not... Maybe 20 years ago they werent this way but not anymore. Pumping out animated 3d models isnt working out well for the consumers.
