Marching is a preforming art like ballet.Anyone can play a sport but not a lot of people can do what people in marching band do. Dont say ive never marched ive marched drum corps and marching band.
Marching band is most definitely a sport. Scientists have done tests on DCI (drum corps international) members in the past and from the tests it shows that you need to have the physical fitness of a marathon sprinter. And that was back in early 2000's. The shows they do have only gotten more and more intense
Noah Kim -Those "tests" were actually one test done on a single player -The player was a tenor drummer (40lbs) so the "marathon sprinter" thing doesn't apply to all -You don't have to have the fitness of a marathon sprinter but the conditioning of one -A drum corp is different than a marching band -Drum corps are a lot harder to perform in than marching bands Are you happy?
Now I'd like someone to make a long rant about how I'm wrong that is so long it can't fit in to one comment bc I'm an idiot who knows absolutely nothing
Hello all! Samuel here, almost 5 years after this video. I only just found the login for this account. Wow. This was just a school project we made for English in 2012 and 2013. We all go to different universities now, so thanks for supporting this and debating! It’s a great debate to be had.
I'm in baseball and was in football but quit to join Marching band and I can honestly say that marching band absolutely drains me, baseball and football was draining but not as draining as band and band camp is wayyyy worst than anything I've experienced in football and baseball. In my opinion marching band is a sport because of how much physical activity it takes, anyone who thinks its not a sport has a one-sided story.
I have been in marching band for years now, and I do not consider band to be a sport. It is very athletic, but not a sport. I consider anything that has to have judges in a different category than sports. Like, gymnastics is not a sport to me, but it is obviously athletic. That's why it's the Olympic Games.
i think band is a different category OF sports because as melting feathers said, gymnastics has judges but it's most definitely a sport. the only differentiating factor between marching band and traditional sports besides judges is the fact that we play against another school/team at different times. in football, you play against another team while both are on the field. you do in soccer, basketball and baseball too.
I still to this day wrestle and do marching band and i would take a 10 hour marching band practice any day v.s 2 hours of wrestling practice marching band requires no actual fitness compared to real physical sports
I wonder how many people saying that marching band isn't a sport is actually in marching band. Can t judge when you're not in it. Just saying. Now I'm in colorguard which is defined as an sport of the arts. SPORT!!! Nobody can tell me otherwise because can you say that you can do a perfect and synchronized routine with tons of tosses and drill that you gracefully sprint in?! No, didn't think so. I have grown tons of muscle from guard and I don't do any other sports.
I thought guard was sort of hard but not that hard until i joined in my marching bands color guard. Hardest but most rewarding thing ive done. Also the only sports injury i ever received XD (dislocated thumb)
Well, problem Football has two-a-days which are 2 in the morning, 2 in the afternoon (2 hours) for I believe a week. 20 Hours. Marching band has Band Camp and rehearsals which I won't count. Band camp lasts from where I am 8AM to 5PM Nine hours a day. 45 Hours. Marching band works harder and longer than the football team.
Your football team must be horrible. we practice after (school hours) 2:20 to 6:30. But that's just during the school year. Before the season there is a thing called doubles where you go at 6:30 in the morning and start with conditioning (bear crawls, death march, suicides, gassers, classic workouts, long distance runs, indurance tests) till about 9:00 (8:30 if we keep up a good pace). Then we have offensive drills (going over plays, a little conditioning here and there, and hitting drills) till about 11:30. Then we get a hydration break (yes it's called that) till about 12:00 then we do it all over again conditioning and drills (accept defensive drills instead of offence) till about 6:00pm. Then repeat everyday (except sundays) for about 2 months until school starts.
Marching Band is a sport, and, having played several sports in my life, I gotta say, Marching band requires more fitness than a lot of other sports that i've played, such as Baseball
Trellis Rose I give you guys props for being able to hold those things. I can barely stand at attention with my clarinet for 30 seconds without my arms starting to hurt
Some schools(like mine) realize that euphoniums are really heavy and having to hold one like a trumpet for a long period of time can be harder than playing
Growing up always doing Cheer, Basketball, and Softball (played all for 5 years) I have to say, I work a lot harder in Marching Band than I did in any other sport.
Who marches with a euphonium Baritones are used for marching bands Better projection That’s why they also use sousaphone or Constras (bazookas) for tubas
Some bands march with the british style euphoniums and there are even marching variants of the euph probably because the school cant afford to buy new instruments
My friends and I made this video for a school project almost three years ago 😂 I can't believe it almost has 1,800 views. -The guy playing basketball P.S. I was in band for six years. Except I played percussion, not a wind instrument 😂
KnackAttack H. Nope! The three of us in the video were all members of the marching band at Birdville High School! I marched bass drum on the drum line, Dylan marched euphonium and Samuel played in The Pit!
Finally!! A band video with a concert euphonium instead of a marching baritone!! Nothing against marching baritone players though, I'm just glad to see the instrument I play in a video!!:)
Junior high: "oh boy I can't wait until high school and college concert performances" freshman year HS: (none freshman)" *inaudible* DCI*inaudible *DCI DCI*inaudible" (freshman) " what is DCI?" (none freshman)"*chuckle* I can show you the world...!"
Marching band really is a sport. I honestly have some arguments though. Yes, marching band is a sport. I've marched and you get sweaty, out of breath, and it sucks when you're tired in a thick marching uniform. Though it is a different type of sport, it is still a sport. It just depends on your lips and lungs as oppose to arms and abs and what not. However, that does not mean you're athletic. No offense but most people in band are scrawny or large these days. Most people who do marching band don't exactly get in shape, it's just not physically demanding enough. Yes, your arms hurt from being at set or attention for a long time, but it doesn't give you football player shoulders. It's not as physically demanding as most sports. I'm not at all a band geek but don't think I hate band or whatever because I love it. In conclusion marching band is just a different type of sport that doesn't make you all that.
they forgot about the field marching: you might run, you might walk slow, you might to a whole bunch of tricks and climbing, iT IS JUST ACTIVITY FOR FITNESSSSSS
Every time I get confronted by a football player, they always say that marching band does no work..... then I proceed to tell them that I know they only practice 2 hours a day for 3-4 days a week and do 1 game. Then I tell them we practice 4-6 days a week for 4 hours each practice and go to their games and have extra competitions. Then I explain how many things we have to think about with each step (50+). Then I tell them we also have region band tryouts and a winter concert (who actually practices the winter concert music btw?). That plus extra on-your-own practice if you actually want to be above average at your instrument. Also private lessons. Also dont forget pass-offs or summer band camp, which they do 3 hours a day for 6 weeks and we do 7-8 hours a day for 5 weeks. Not to mention most of us are in higher level classes than them. They tend to try to make something up like, "oh, well, ummm.... what a bout after marching season?" or something, which i proceed to tell them about concert band UIL and solo and ensemble. Don't forget sectionals or after school rehearsals for about 2-3 hours each. And finally end of year concert and then we get the music for next year's show and do it all over again (unless you are a senior). Oh and btw.... they always say that it can't be THAT hard. Then I laugh and say you couldn't even play 1 note or march in time and you are saying that it can't be that hard. I could join the JV team and probably make 1st string if I tried hard enough. I'm sure I left out a few things too so feel free to comment on my comment and tell me them but yeah.
As a guy who tried for swim, ran track practice and did marching band i can say that they all hard but band is something that you always have to constantly think about doing this when it needs to happen. Also there are people who run with a freaking *tuba* at shows and a lot of physical movements involved that it’s becoming so advanced to where you become physically fit like a sport.
Jeffrey Ortiz it was more of like how people that play sports at our school didn’t say it was a sport, like the outside person looking in. We were trying to prove that marhing band belongs in that category so the “vs.” comes from the pushback we got from people who didn’t believe it

I remember when my schools football team only practiced 4 hours a day. I had zero period band practice, 2nd period band practice, 5th period drum line practice, after school band practice, then drum line practice at night. I never went home until 930 at night during marching season

The definition of a sport is “an activity involving physical exertion and skill in which an individual or team competes against another or others for entertainment.” That’s exactly what marching band is.
For foot ball games at my school the stands are full till after the band plays. then there is only the band/guard and the student section. It is great.
That moment when your band director leaves you in set position for like 200 hours and your arms fall off.

Marching is a preforming art like ballet.Anyone can play a sport but not a lot of people can do what people in marching band do. Dont say ive never marched ive marched drum corps and marching band.
I personally call marching band a sport of the arts. Now colorguard, thats a sport. At least our colorguard is.
Not everyone can play a sport. I guarantee you that. I played football, definitely not for the faint of heart, especially in the summer workouts.
NitricWarrior I consider drum corp a sport. average high school band isn't tho
You obviously haven't seen our band we learn a new show each home game
NitricWarrior Are you sure that everybody can play a sport
Marching band is most definitely a sport. that.kid. apple as my band teacher once said "drum corps is like marching band on steroids"
when someone has to ask you what you play in band and you have to try to explain what a euphonium is
YESS I CAN RELATE
Ethan Jarskey a smaller tuba is as short as I can say it.
Ethan Jarskey BABY TUBA
Or a mello. I honestly most of the time just say that I play the trumpet.
I KNOW RIGHT!?!?!?
I like that he's reading a twilight book
When you play football and are in marching band so you already know both sides of the story
Im curious, whats your opinion than.
Tessa Red my opinion on what
on whether Marching Band is a sport or not.
Wait...how do you do both? I imagine band camp and conditioning (or whatever it is football does in the summer) would majorly conflict.
Chara Nah if it's like my school band and football practice are a different times in the day.

Anya Deising I'm in marching band and I know that guard is hard
Anya Deising im in colorguard 😊🏳
In indoor percussion the drumline can do this but instead of flags they use sticks 😂
I'm also in color guard, much respect
Well, problem
Football has two-a-days which are 2 in the morning, 2 in the afternoon (2 hours) for I believe a week.

Vegetolion 8 to 5 am? Damn we only had 4 to 8. Then again we dont really march halftime shows anymore and we just learned 3 songs through those days
Our band camp was 8am to freakin 10 pm
Our marching band worked for 273 hours this past season and won championships!
@@lukeh2379 mine was 5 days of 6:30am to 11pm with an hour break for each meal
For us at band camp, we were 7Am-7PM sometimes 8PM even 9PM
my schools football team practices 1 hour. when the band, we're up there for 5 hours practicing music and another 3 hours marching.
khjhk because football doesn't take as much skill
Kaleb Spell yeah. that's why I get mad when they say it's easy.

"If golf is a sport, marching band is most definitely a sport"
Yes.
"The euphonium is quite heavy"
*flute and sousaphone are typing...*
Nate Cottrell as a drumline member, can confirm.
Euphonium ftw
Trellis Rose yesss
Trellis Rose all day every day is euponiday... ayyyyyyyyye
Oh yeah my dude. But I also play trombone
Trellis Rose lol
Trellis Rose I give you guys props for being able to hold those things. I can barely stand at attention with my clarinet for 30 seconds without my arms starting to hurt
Who fucking uses a concert euphonium in marching band
Some schools(like mine) realize that euphoniums are really heavy and having to hold one like a trumpet for a long period of time can be harder than playing
But still it's kind of stupid to use a concert euphonium while marching
I remember at a contest I went to, this school switched out between mellos and French horns... was the best show I've ever seen
Jebodeiasque you know there's that one band out there that does
It was concert season when we filmed. All my school's marching horns were in the shop.
This is rather cringy but good job 😂
OriginaLane that was our intent :)
He was reading twilight 😂😂
While practicing for marching band on certain days, I'll watch the football team arrive and leave practice

I play a euphonium.
I play it too. I was kinda expecting the band guy to play something more simple like a Bb Major Scale
Rehearsal on Mondays, Tuesdays, and Thursdays, games on Fridays, competitions on Saturdays + occasional parades.
It's definitely a sport
clicked this video because of euphonium :)
Same
I play the friggin’ tuba, and when people say that marching with it doesn’t take skill, I do exactly what the kid did in this video.

Ive gotten into fights that last like three days over weather or not band is a sport.
fact: while piccolo is the lightest instrument on that field, I do have minor hearing damage from playing it on the field for 2 years.

This looks like some home video you’d watch in heath class about like consent
I actually started crying cause you were yelling marching band while holding a silver Euph. You poor soul.
As a euphonium player him trying to play made me sad
Marching Band for the win!
