I think Slash misinterpreted it as Axl saying it wasn’t good but what I believe is that Axl wanted to record a bit of everyone’s stuff, so 4 songs from Slash, 4 songs from Duff and 4 from himself. And Matt was fired after an argument.

Guns 'n Roses were one of the greatest rock bands of all time, up there with Led Zeppelin, David Bowie, Pink Floyd, the Beatles, etc. Duff McKagan brought the punk edge, Slash the blues angle, Axl's voice transcended all manner of genres...they could tour with heavy metal greats like Metallica....and still cover the likes of Jimi Hendrix, Glen Campbell, the Damned, Bob Dylan....the fact that metalheads, punks, and old school rock 'n rollers all found something to dig in this band tells you a lot. And they could've been the next Rolling Stones; in some ways they were like their heirs, albeit for A time instead of all time (unfortunately).

bennie albers i went to see Slash and Duff and to listen to the songs. I was expecting to hear Axl singing bad,but it wasn't like that,during a few songs he sang like in 2006,which was a good year for him
in history there were bands where members could be substituted for and the band still work..this wasn't so with GnR they were the perfect combo take one out and the sound isn't the same..i truly believe that Izzy was the meat and potatoes of GnR his songwriting gave the songs the coolness you hear without him the music became too technical..which isn't necessarily a bad thing..just isn't GnR.
don't get me wrong Axl is one of the best frontmen ever..and of course Slash is Slash his sound can't be replaced..but Izzy's songwriting carried them in my opinion..just look what happened when he left...yeah they wen't on to finish the huge illusion tour but no more music.

I love Chinese Democracy..JuJu Hounds..Slash's Snakepit, Velvet Revolver.. and pretty much all of it....but none of that is real GnR.. I still feel and always will feel that GnR was done as soon as Izzy left.
Izzy Stradlin is definitely one of the greatest Rhythm guitarists ever. Hell of a songwriter too. He was the heart and soul of this band.
