Why these female neurosurgeons are trailblazers

- Canada has 333 practising neurosurgeons, and only 36 are women. St. Michael's Hospital in Toronto currently has seven women residents who specialize in neurosurgery - more than they've ever had. CBC's Ali Chiasson sat down with five of them about pushing diversity in operating rooms.

All these insecure men talking about promoting competency instead of diversity. They didnt get accepted because they’re women, they got accepted because they preformed better than other applicants, men and women alike...
say that again when you need a brain surgery, I bet you will lick back what you have said
mangohunter I’m assuming you’re referring to another comment that has been deleted
@@Jordan_Dossou Scarlet Winter of course. It's very obvious these women got there easier due to diversity agenda. Yes I'm very insecure about these women because if I got accident and need trauma surgery, they will operate on me.
mangohunter but you’re aware that they have to complete the same training right? Regardless of if they got chosen over male applicants they were on equal footing anyway. Meaning that they’re both equally admissable but they might give preference to the woman because she has had to overcome stereotypes in a male dominated field and has as result most likely had to work harder to get necessary connections and respect from peers. A respected medical institution is never going to risk patient lives and the integrity of their program to hire someone who isn’t competent, that’s simply illogical. Also in Canada only 10% of neurosurgeons are women. The video’s purpose is to provide female representation for younger women so that they know its not impossible. If I need brain surgery, trust me I’m not going to care about the surgeon’s gender, I only care that they have a certificate on their wall attesting to their completion of training.
The Zen Show how does me calling the men insecure when they are trying to bring down the women’s accomplishments correlate with you asking me if Im a neurosurgeon? Im definitely not one since Im not even an adult yet. Are you implying that I can’t defend these women because I myself am not a neurosurgeon? Do explain your logic, I am quite curious.
Tbh, if a doctor has to poke around my brain with sharp things, I don't care if they're a man or a woman as long as they're capable of completing the job. But, hey, more female doctors just means more doctors for our healthcare system period. I know these ladies are very busy, but I suggest at least one of them visit schools and give talks to inspire students and to get them to consider becoming something more useful than a youtuber or IG influencer. We already have too many of those.
Agree so long as there is absolutely no positive discrimination and quotas.... good for them.....
Yess you are totally right .
duh female brain bit less then mans. fact maN.
@@ricksantos1580 there always is
@@AC-mp7cx agreed! There is almost a fanatical and cultish fervor to "artificially equalizing" everyone...
What happened to true equal opps as in judge a person by the content if their characters and skills... not their gender or color!!
Congrat's to these women! May they well be successful.
My favorite doctors are the anesthesiologist and radiologist, cuz they like the party.
True story, Dr. Sanjay Gupta, who is a neurosurgeon, was doing a report from Afghanistan at a Mobile Medical unit, when wounded Marines started to come in and the commanding officer told Sanjay Gupta live on air, we need you now, we are short a neurosurgeon. Dr. Gupta without a single question or hesitation dropped everything and walked into the medical tent.
Can you provide a link to that please. Thank you
Female Neurosurgeons, to be a woman in medicine, only a few FEMALES do brain surgery infact here too in America. I had to quit Pre Med due to a serious- reason, ok. But, I have overcome that. These days , I would of been an M.D. Neurosurgeon. Best support to these ladies and many more through-out humankind. Keep iT going !
Women naturally have steadier hands so it would make sense for women to be our surgeons, pilots, crane operators etc.
They can be your surgeon but not mine 😂
This is so amazing! People don’t realize how much education and training is required to be in this profession. Also, as scientists, they also perform and test many of these things on themselves first, before they do it directly on their patients.
This is so wonderful and inspiring to see! Happy to see that female presence in neurosurgery is trending upward 👍🏽 My Mother had a stroke this year and had a few neurosurgeries at St. Michael’s so I recognize those hallways...best place for neurosurgery! I’m SO THANKFUL for the work they do, the team at St. Michael’s saved my Mother (special thanks to Dr. Spears & Dr. Marotta). Just amazing 💫⭐️
Aww I'm really sorry about your mom Tracy ....I'm Michael nice to meet you ! 🤝
Thank you for working hard for saving patients, may you be blessed well health, happy life, keep smiling with lol politely & safely
Thankyou ladies for your hard work and dedication to the medical field.
A lot of really disappointing comments.
Woot. I had neurosurgery done on me at St Michaels. Thank you doctor M
Me too, 20 years ago.
Lots of fascist in the comments, great work ladies!
Do you even know what fascist means?
St Michael's has a top neurosurgery department in Canada.
You are absolutely right Betty Dunn🤝
imagine the collaboration that can be achieved, not based on gender, but ability.
I will never let any women make me any medical surgeries
@@vaagmikaelian9078 good luck with that, are you a brain donor?
@ASAP Gangsta you wouldn't need one. You need to have a brain first which you clearly don't have. You can't even form a coherent sentence.
@@vaagmikaelian9078 Learn a bit of grammar before you insult someone. ; )
@@vaagmikaelian9078 That's okay, honey. With this kind of opinion you have brain damage beyond medical help anyway.
Hats off to you guys
Wow very accomplished woman✔️You go girls👍🇨🇦
I’m in dire need of a spine neurosurgeon right now! My family doctor can’t find one here in southern Ontario that is taking referrals or doesn’t have a very long wait list. Help, if anyone knows!!!
Omg you don't have any idea how much u inspired me
The one with threes kids WOW I mean WOW😇😇😇😇I’m going proud of all of the and looking up to them
I know a neurosurgeon who has kids. He's amazing. So it's definitely possible
These women are heros
Thank you ladies! You are inspiring the next generation of girls to become neurosurgeons!!
love you ladies
They all are beautiful ❤
I wish i will be a neurosurgeon just like you if the god willing
❤
It is my long cherished dream to become a neurosurgeon,In Shaa Allah if my Allah SWT wishes and gives me the power to be. 😊
Nice
Doesn’t trail blazing involve doing something new? How are what they doing any different than the surgeons who proceed them?
I’d say since neurosurgeons are 80:1 male then these women are pretty spectacular people. It’s rare and should be applauded.
Also neurosurgery is a very new field so there is room for alot of development and new procedures which they themselves will coin most likely .
@@travischilders9921 ily for saying that, thank u
Hey CBC, why not leave gender out of it?
How do you deal with pms if you have to operate on a brain??
Its only about 3 days in a month. Not all the time.
How do you deal with carpal tunnel?
pms is because of testosterone how do you live with that everyday the same way they deal
I hope the two of them wore full make up just for camera.
This must be a joke 🤣 ,who in their right minds would trust those to perform a brain surgery on them.
All these ladies are foreign-born...exception is Rabski
Push competency, not diversity.
Why not push both?
Who’s to say that these women are not competent?
Well these women are competent.
@@asiaaye2484 Because only one matters.
@@gabbi3067 I'm sure these women are competent.
What doctor shortage ? Canada ranked last among OECD countries in health care wait times. Sadly, more female doctors will only make wait times worse since women take time off to start families. The profession maintains that vestige of colonialism FMG's(foreign trained medical graduates) to keep doctors out. We've all met him, driving cab in Montreal, Toronto or Vancouver.
Maybe because they're partners have a harder time taking time off? Maybe because it is engrained that a female vs a male needs to take the time off?
No men? This is discrimination at its finest.
It’s not
it’s really not... neurosurgery has a 80:1 man to women ratio... men want to be oppressed so bad it’s embarrassing
Cry harder, mra
Women FINALLY become neurosurgeons, right before they are all replaced by A.I. run machines. A little late to the party ladies.
patients still prefer real surgeons operate so😢
Men doing neurosurgery for thousand years and women doing neurosurgery. Oh look look look they are doing something new.😒
Why should i care?!
won't trust them
