    I remember watching your videos back in 2019 and I must say you were one big influence on me researching surgical tech schools. I joined the program in November 2019, started February 2020, and I am now doing my clinicals in a prestigious hospital and should graduate this September/October. I’m happy to say I’ve taken so much information you shared and are now applying it on my own cases. Thank you so very much for sharing all of your knowledge.

    This is pretty cool. I appreciate that he's taking the time to educate everyone on the scrub role. I'm not sure if I would say towards the end of the video that "that is basically it." Depending on where you work, it can be as easy as he says (outpatient surgical centers are more relaxed than trauma hospitals) or it can be more complicated. My first few years in Utah didn't prepare me well as far as learning trauma surgery (because the hospital rarely had trauma cases) but because of the rural nature, scrubs are taught and have a higher scope of practice compared to other populated states that regulate the scrub role. for example, I was taught how to first assist in Utah, but in Washington, I'm not allowed to do many of the first assist roles. However, I have had more practice with trauma cases on the coast. During downtime, you should be going over the rest of your cases, making sure you have the right supplies for them, studying the procedures if you don't know them well, etc. You are expected to be able to, at the very least, anticipate what the surgeon needs. You will be expected to learn the same procedures several different ways since every surgeon does them slightly different (that can be confusing at first). Take the time to realize how much wisdom that gives you. You are able to see surgeries performed in a myriad of ways for a long time. This gives you tons of information. You quickly realize what is efficient. The scrub role would have been a godsend for surgical medical students. Scrub techs that do continue their health career into either PA or Med School end up becoming amazing surgical PA's and Surgeons.

      That is totally wrong and against surgical standards. This is the easiest way to bring outside fomites into the OR and cause an infection in the patients or to take them home to spread to yourself or your family and children...even (especially) my surgical shoes remain at work in the locker room area, I wouldn’t take them home for anything! I would insist the hospital provide their own laundered scrubs. Totally against standards...not sure where you are, but yuck. You really take your scrubs home after doing cases with MRSA or necrotizing fasciitis? Scary.

    • @amycamburn
      @amycamburn 6 років тому +1

      I'm not sure what they do in the OR yet as I'm not done my schooling but on the regular floors at my hospital the nurses, CNA's and secretaries (me) have to purchase and wash our own scrubs. I usually keep all my scrubs separate and wash all of them together. We have precautions in place when there is a MRSA or other contact infection patient, we use gowns, booties, and masks so we are protected. :-)

    One day I heard about this career and I went to a medical school for information. However I changed my mind about it because just felt I just couldn’t have the guts to do it and my English wasn’t good enough.
    Years later, I got a job in a random women’s center that I preferred to about the name. it was about abortions. I had no idea what I was going to deal with but I really needed the job for my financial situation at that time. I thought I was not going to be strong enough to do it. All my family members are Catholics and everyday l was having drama from them because I was doing it. (Believe me, I wasn’t enjoying it) but very inside of me I was exited about the surgical procedures, The room, the smart anesthesiologist anyway... since that day I’m working everyday to be an excellent surgical technologist with a big difference. I want to help people to continue living in this beautiful world! (Please don’t judge me )

    I work in a Trauma hospital, and like most techs I can scrub all cases. However, I have been, almost exclusively, a Neurosurgical Tech/First Assist with our neuro team, and started training with them about 2 months after graduation.
    Before college, I hit UA-cam and tried to watch as many videos like yours, which gave me an excitement factor in my future endeavor. UNFORTUNATELY, back then (8 years ago), UA-cam had SO LITTLE in choice videos that were like yours.
    I mean to say, the videos were all student or classroom information. So, the REALITY and ACTUAL WORK INSIGHTS of a working assist/tech, were nill. Maybe I saw 1 or 2 back then.
    Unfortunately my hospital will not permit phones (yeah right), but definitely will not tolerate video recording...despite the fact one COULD record and respect the HIPAA and being compliment.
    I urge any techs reading, especially in large cases , i.e. NEURO, EX-LAP, complex ORTHO, & VASCULAR, to make videos themselves.
    Although this is a basic video on the 'day and life' (however great), much more is needed for our growing field, and I STILL can't seem to find much SOLID VIDEOS. ESPECIALLY in length.
    Lastly, thank you all for being in service. Most Scrubs are proud peacocks, but most scrubs also know that we are often misrepresented, under-appreciated, and all this kind of "stuff" one learns....eventually. So step up and show the UA-cam viewers that, guess what? Oh you didn't know? Well we fucking kickasss and have mad skills and tricks, and are very intelligent individuals, etc. Yet the most powerful action we have, and is known by all O.R. personal, is this...if we (as a facility unit of techs) were to say, "strike....no raises, better this, less on call that, etc. Then we refuse to work TODAY, PERIOD!" - - - All surgical cases would be cancelled, and the hospital, Surgical department, etc. Would be F'd and thrown into a state of chaotic HELL.
    This is the WEIGHT OF OUR VALUE!

    So you can leave whenever you want to after you’re done with all the surgeries you’re scheduled for? I’m starting school in August to be a surgical tech and I’m really not sure if i can take it by watching somebody get cut open and seeing there insides, hopefully through schooling it’ll get easier. I was going into cardiovascular technology to be a technologist and technician, then go into sonography. but the school I’m already enrolled into, they guy rid of the CT program because of funding so i decided to go into surgical tech as a last minute and ive been trying to watch videos, look at information, etc.

    Hey how did you handle looking inside a person's body when you first started? I've considered becoming surgical tech for months but then I watched a video on an open heart surgery and I felt weirded out the entire time. I took a zoology class in high school and didn't mind. Not sure if that's comparable lol but it's my only point of reference aside from videos on real surgeries on people.

      It can be a lot worse than some of these nice, easy, clean videos you see on UA-cam. A heart surgery is nothing compared to anything below that - where stomach contents, urine, and feces could play a part. You could always do outpatient in specialities that don't deal with those things, I'm just saying it can get nasty! Best thing to do is try a college anatomy course that includes a lab. Or if that is too much $ for you, REDDIT has a scrub tech forum where you can read about cases they've done and get their opinions on your situation.

    Hi! I’m new to your page, so forgive me if these are repeat questions....
    What are the typical working hours for a surgical tech? I know surgeries can be scheduled at different times, but is it typically day shifts? Do you work weekends?
    I know you posted a video showing that you advanced to surgical first assistant - Congrats! May I ask which you like better, not just in terms of more salary but the actual work itself? Pros and cons of each? If you made a video on all of this already, please let me know. Thank you!! & thanks so much for making these videos!!

      Work hours can vary. There are 8 hours shifts, there are 10 hour shifts, there are 12 hour shift. It all depends on what a hospital needs. I started working 7am-3p, 8 hour shifts 5 days a week. Now I work 3, 12 hour shifts 11a-11p.

    Hey love your videos. I'm actually writing a screenplay and one of my characters work as a surgical tech, and I had a question. Is there a lead Surgical Tech that gives all the other tech their cases? (What's the title of the boss for surgical techs)

    • @jasonvegas3593
      @jasonvegas3593 6 років тому

      Charge nurse usually makes assignments. Most places do have a lead surgical tech, however they mostly just make up the call schedule and are the voice of the other techs. Every place I’ve worked all of the assignments were made by the charge nurse at the front desk

      I've been in numerous hospitals because I am a traveling surgical tech and have ever only encountered 1 hospital with a lead tech. Needless to say, it caused discord between her and the charge nurse because neither could agree on who was really in charge and it caused a lot of issues.

    • @madameflamingo
      @madameflamingo 6 років тому

      jp paj I started mine in October and just remember that everything has a learning curve. You'll get the hang of it even though it may seem super overwhelming when you first start. Preceptors will be hard on you and expect a lot in a very short amount of time, but just try to soak up all of their knowledge. I first scrubbed my first open liver wedge resection a couple of days ago, sometimes you just have to sink or swim so learn to swim!

    • @jasonvegas3593
      @jasonvegas3593 6 років тому

      Just to add to this, you WILL get yelled at. Don’t take it personal, it’s happened to all of us. Also, when you have your instruments laid out make good use of the marking pen and write the names of the ones you have trouble remembering in front of them on the back table. I did this. Also, pretty much no one knows the real names of all of the instruments. Get the basics and go from there. Good luck! You’ll be fine. Once you adjust it’s just like any other job where you’re covered in blood at the end of the day

  • @Kramchuck
    @Kramchuck 5 років тому +1

    4:47 quick question: you opened up your room and then took a break? I'm about to enter the program and our instructors told us you want minimal time between opening the room and the actual procedure. Also, I'm guessing you re-scrubbed in after the break?

    • @rmsanche
      @rmsanche 5 років тому

      This is true. its based more on common sense than any actual data, however. heart cases can go for 8 hrs, I've been in 24 hr cases, not kidding. So the reason behind it is more to try to prevent possible contamination to the field, if left ungaurded, than it is to maintain sterility. Once you've worked at a facility that has a hard time with supplies and equipment, you quickly learn to open and setup asap, in case something is missing, broken, etc. I would much rather have a room ready than be waiting to scrub in to minimize open time. that's just a recipe for disaster.

    Thank you for your videos. I appreciate what you are doing in explaining the life and events of a surgical tech. I have been a tech for about 12 years and I have become burned out. Is there a way to find the joy again or is it time to move on and find something else as a career?

    • @jasonvegas3593
      @jasonvegas3593 6 років тому +1

      I had to stop my position as a first assistant due to having a spinal fusion. However, to be honest, I was more than burned out. I haven’t seen the inside of an OR in about 6 months (other than when I had my own surgery). I worked 20 years in surgery and was far more than burned out. After the cool-ness factor wears off, younstart dreading working with slow surgeons or doing cases that take all day, I see where you’re going here. I was there. Can honestly say I dreaded going to work each day unless I was working with certain friends of mine that are surgeons. I was soooo over it. Good income though and a lot of time put into it, so it’s very hard to just walk away. My spine fusion dragged me away, so I had no choice to get out. Kind of glad it happened though.

      Jason Hall, pretty much the same with me. I loved my job. I injured my back twice in 2003. I worked 11 years with it worsening. I did everything to keep working- injections, tens, heat, massage, inversion table. I finally had to stop 4 years ago. My pain was making me miserable, short-tempered, etc. I haven't been able to work since then even after 2 back and 3 level ACDF. There are aspects that I miss. Are you going to return to work? Have you improved since your fusion?
