- Of all the foods you can find in New Jersey, one sandwich reigns supreme. The pork roll (Taylor ham), egg, and cheese is the state's most iconic food for a reason: It's something you'll really only find in New Jersey. Despite the fierce debate among locals on whether this cured meat is called pork roll or Taylor ham, New Jerseyans can all agree having one of these breakfast sandwiches from a local deli is a rite of passage in the Garden State.

The Pork Roll (Or Taylor Ham), Egg, And Cheese | Legendary Eats
Even as a jersey guy I can tell you that this isn’t a typical pork roll breakfast sandwich. Usually it’s just a slice or two, egg and cheese. This seems to be more like a novelty sandwich or something.
South Jersey nut.. it’s called Taylor Ham bro

The best is to eat this sandwich, while listening to Ween's album, The Pod. For those who don't know, Pork roll, egg, and cheese sandwiches are a running theme throughout. 😁
May the Boognish bless you

He thought he did something showing the water steam trick 😂
Yeah he did. I do that almost daily 😆
Lol, you just need to put a lid on it to melt the cheese.
Lmao “super secret old trick”
As a New Jerseyan thats 1) way too much pork roll on the sandwich and 2) cut ridiculously thick. I've never seen a Pork Roll egg and cheese like that in my life
Ya I’m from near the beach and I normally get 4 slices but definitely not that thick
Me neither and I live in Morris County.
Yup. Never seen a sandwich like that either and I've lived all over NJ. Too much meat, too thick to enjoy.
You need to try it . But I ask for the small now that my cholesterol is high

I’m from New Jersey and I find it interesting many people have never tried Pork Roll. I live next to Slaters and have grown up eating Pork Roll. If you don’t like salty meats you’ll hate pork roll. Easiest way to describe it is higher quality spam without the weird aftertaste and a bit tougher texture.
From New Jersey as well and I’ve never had one either. Just never have. I’d get vilified by everyone that knows me but I don’t really see it as a big deal. Gonna go get one for breakfast tomorrow though so there ya go
It basically just Spam.
Is it salty like spam??

It's just too much. 1 thinner slice is good. That sandwich has 6 HUGE slices. Buy the individual slices at ur grocery store and try a sandwich with 1 slice. You'll probably like it. It's like a mix of ham and bacon for a sandwich.
@@ittimjones Its supposed to have a lot of meat. Thats the best part of it ☺
It’s definitely a Jersey and Philly thing. It’s so good. It’s not something you eat everyday but when you have it is a real treat 😃
I was intrigued so I made one at home like this. A ridiculous amount of pork roll, kaiser roll, a fried egg, it's a 10/10. Food like this often tastes better when someone else cooks it, I'm in Delaware and this looks worth the drive.
I agree it's always better cooked by someone else.
Basically cholesterol in a roll

Interesting after watching this video I’ve started to receive sharp pains on the left side of my chest
Legendary eats in other country: we start with the the meat we prepared and marinated in the morning, topping with our own topping and secret sauce that me cooked for a week.
Legendary eats in America: WHAT IF WE PUT SIX OF THIS PORK ROLL IN A SANDWICH?

All these thin skinned Americans coming out of the woodwork to moan that someone's taken the piss out of their disgusting food hahaha! The vast majority of "American" cuisine is just a cheaper and even less healthy version of European or African dishes, this video just highlights that once again.

Outstanding sandwich( in rural Kentucky we call sammich, lol) we cut 1/3 inch in slits in all 4 spots (o' clock 12, 3, 6, 9 to keep from curling up) on pork roll, ham , baloney, pork loin, etc..., I like 2 over easy eggs on mine as I like the runny yolk with cheese.
Why am I watching this at 1 in the morning?! Man I'm HOOONG GRIIII LoL
It looks *heart-stoppingly* good, literally! 😆
As someone from Jersey let me just say that you don't usually get 4 pieces of pork roll on a sandwich, I think most would agree with me that it's overkill. It's usually 1-2 pieces at most places you'd go to.
Wtf I live in NNJ and 4 slices are a default. Not thick but damn you’re getting ripped off with 2 lol.
@@ManchesterUtdFan no that's true, I meant more if you're getting sandwiches with that kind of thickness you're going to get two at most. But you're right there are some shops that sell it thinner but give you more.
I mean I don't know about you but I've never had a sandwich that looks like the one in the video LOL
its usually 2-3 slices of the thin cut pork roll; this sandwich is 6 slices of the thick cut, which is ridiculous. I actually had one of these at Slaters once, its really just too much of a good thing. Those thick cut slices,, 2 would be more than enough for a delicious sandwich.
Taylor ham is to New Jersey as Spam is to Hawaii.
Also it’s good to know that it was originally designed to be called Taylor’s Ham and not just a nickname for it by the people.

Nah. But you will feel lethargic.
By my calculations, just one of these sandwiches has well over 1,000 calories.
I’m sure pork roll is mostly fat so like that is truly an absurd number of calories in meat alone. Each slice probably at least 200. So 1200 plus 200 for bread 200 for cheese 150 for egg. So ballpark that’s a whopping 1750 calories lmao. And some of my guesses were conservative so could be more in reality

We have two major pork roll manufacturers in NJ: Taylor and Case. Both are great. Even generic pork roll is pretty fine! I just had to mail a couple rolls to my brother in Florida because he couldn't get any down there and was dying for some. There is always pork roll in my freezer. You never know when the craving can hit.
Taylor ham is one of the greatest gifts of having family roots in Jersey.
Damn! That looks good!
As a native New Jersian, I can say with confidence we know how to eat. White Castle if you're in north jersey, Hoagie Haven if you're around Princeton, a Wawa PRE&C sandwich just about anywhere and of course, Shriver's salt water taffy and fudge if you're down in Ocean City.

New Jersey’s signature sandwich!
looks good
I bought some out of supermarkets in Atlanta, it's definitely great as a breakfast sandwich. Some chain should offer pork roll egg and cheese in the AM!
Best breakfast ever! I'm from Puerto Rico, but spent almost a month in New Jersey a couple of months ago and tried it, I totally loved it. Many small deli's in the Raritan county serve it in a bagel of choice too. Last but not least, although it shows in the sandwich itself, it wasn't properly mentioned, but back in New Jersey they taught me that Ketchup is a must in a Taylor Ham sandwich.
I'm born and raised in NJ and I never get it with ketchup, to me the ketchup takes over too much of the flavor. I usually like to get my pork roll egg & cheese with cooked onions.
@@arkanoiddude really? That's good to know from someone from NJ. At least my experience was with ketchup, but then again, I didn't even live in Jersey, I just stayed for a while.
@@JimmyPunkWrestling I mean if you like it with ketchup more power to ya but really you can get it with anything you want on it. If I'm getting one from a deli then I usually just get it with cooked onions, but when I make at home I do it a little different...I fry two eggs over easy, two slices of pork roll (I like mine a bit burned), and use two slices of either American or pepper jack (whatever I happen to have), and then I cook some onions up and throw em on top. I also use white bread slices instead of a roll, and I spread a thin layer of mayonaise on the bread slices and brown them on the stove, gives the bread almost a french toast kind of flavor. To me that's the best way to make a pre&c, but its my own personal way, definitely is not the "traditional" way.
I miss this so bad I’m a Jersey girl and this is a breakfast go to 💙 They don’t have pork roll here in Raleigh NC I have to go back home

You can get it in the Austin area HEBs. I get 1.5 pounds sliced on 4, but I also like getting it sliced on 6 or more (thicker).
As a non-American, I'd like to know what the difference is between whatever the heck a 'pork roll' is compared to regular old bologna (polony)? Cause I feel like cutting up and frying a couple of slices of polony for a sandwich and wedging in an egg and some cheese in between gets your the same type of thing. . . The cut and quantity of those 'pork roll' slices though is absolutely ridiculous.
Bologna has fillers, additives, and other non-pork ingredients that are added for flavor. Taylor Ham is just minced pork shoulder.
Completely different from bologna and spam. A different seasoning and flavor than spam and much more tangy. Bologna is like a hotdog flavor. Taylor Ham is like nothing you have ever had. You can order it and have it shipped Amazon carries it. Make sure you get a good hard roll a Kaiser Roll , eggs and cheddar cheese. Many Jersey deli’s use American cheese but I opt for a good ole Wisconsin cheddar cheese.
It has a completely different taste but a fried bologna sandwich it’s also good.
@@freesoul3371 how does it compare to canadian bacon
@@KvltKommando Canadian bacon is similar to ham. Taylor Ham is ground pork mixed with spices into a summer sausage type product that has a tangy taste to it. They are very different from one another.
"in other parts of the country, a breakfast sandwich usually consists of eggs, cheese, and some kind of meat, but in new jersey........." it has eggs, cheese, and some kind of meat...
