You guys have great videos, but it’d be great if you took it to the scales with the trailer (loaded) to weigh it. I have a 21 2500 Big Horn with the 6.4, and 2820lb payload…but I don’t think I’d trust the Hemi with a 10,000+ 5th wheel
@Jonathan Tripp the only reason the payload is so low is because of the 10k weight limit for class 2 trucks, the truck won't care one bit. The brakes are the same between a 2500 and a 3500 Btw.
@@loveracing1988 yeah I’ve wondered this and think you might be right. I think some people overthink the payload numbers a bit and I think they are more to do with providing a more than safe number to the consumer and meet govt standards. I think the truck is safely capable of more than it’s listed

I agree with your guys, about 75% of people has no clue of what they get and buy without doing their home work and research on truck and trailer combo.👍🏻
I use to tow a wildcat fifth wheel and boat with a 2003 GM heavy half 6L. Your right. Had more truck then trailer and very comfortable to tow. People really don’t know for they see a 1/2 ton that tows 12000lbs because it has the torq and horse power. Doesn’t mean it will handle the best.
I have the same truck, but with rambox. I purchased the bed ladder that you have but I sent it back. It could have worked but it probably would have scratched the bumper and the tail gate support cable was a challenge. I still think that it was a good idea but be careful with the rambox. Just wanted to let you know.
Speaking as a fat old man, a way in and out of the truck bed is paramount! I really like Ford's built in step, but you found something nice for your RAM and it seems to work just fine!
I like that tailgate ladder. I just use my 3 step aluminum ladder. I use it to reach up on our RV. Also great to rest gerry cans on it before pouring gas into tank. Your RV is not small.
My wife has a 2018 Ram 2500 Crewcab 4wd 6.7L. We have a cargo trailer for projects. We will probably buy a 22ft trailer. Because many of the U.S. Federal campgrounds have a 22ft limit. Enjoy your rig! To those commenter mentioning a CDL. I have had a class A drivers license since last century. I have operated a combination vehicle up to 227,000#. And run the US 48 states and Canada in all 4 seasons. And while it may be a good idea to have an "RV" or "horse trailer" endorsement for heavy trailers. A CDL requirement for heavy RV and horse trailers on a less than 15k GVW pickup. Will not improve safety. Heavy RV's and horse trailers do need some additional skills. But the CDL test idea is overkill.
Proper towing setup there Howard. Agree on your opinion of the half tons with the big trailers, anything over 7k lbs is HD truck territory if you are towing frequently IMO. Lots of tourists here on PEI with 5th wheels and the tail wagging the dog situation I'm sure. You're using that truck as it's intended by design. Stay safe travelling south Howard. My uncle, who is double vaccinated, just came home from a trip to Scotland and got sick. No need to be hospitalized but sick enough with a positive test and needed to isolate. This Delta is wicked it seems, just be careful.
That color with black trim and black rims is a beauty. I bought a used 2017 siover titan and love that it has black trim and black rims.. makes it look clean, i never cared for chrome packages
"More truck than trailer" 100% spot on. People go out and buy a new Ford Ranger for example where they tout it'll tow 7500 pounds...yeah ok, maybe on a nice perfect day on perfectly flat straight ground, but where are you going that you'll have that 100% of the time. Lots of overloaded tow vehicles out there, and the dealerships should be held accountable for selling people a truck or a trailer, or an SUV and a trailer that aren't compatible with each other. You gotta look at far more than the base towing numbers because hardly anyone is actually buying a base model anything, they gotta have the limited luxury crap, which significantly reduces towing capability, but they just see the base model regular cab 4x2 will tow 30k for example, but the truck they actually buy can only tow maybe 20k but they'll buy that 40,000 pound trailer because they can.
Did you do the "math" on the payload? 1495 on the fifth wheel pin and 2110 on the truck. That only leaves 600 pounds... fill up with diesel 200 pounds, hitch 100 pounds, driver and passengers........ We haven't even started adding the stuff that will be added in the fifth wheel!!!
Good video the only thing I would have changed is a 3500 over the 2500 since the 2500 has coil springs in the rear instead of leaf springs. The leaf springs tend to be more stable.
We love our 2020 ram 2500 with our forest river 26dbh Cherokee alpha wolf camper. Plenty of power pulling 7k pounds. Actually quite enjoyable even with screaming kids in the back:)
Sweet set up…. I have a 2017 2500 Cummins Longhorn that I tow a 40ft toy hauler with. Best towing rig I’ve ever owned. I also have the Toyo AT3’s and love them especially in the snow.
Two comments about the additions you did…the factory all weather mats for the 2500 are awesome. I like them better than the weather tech ones. Great thick mats that cover more and have high edges to really keep water and melting snow from getting all over (I think $200 Cdn option front and rear). Also, the bed step from the factory works great (and I have Tam boxes). I think it’d even be better without the Ram boxes.
Good review, like my 2500, my 5th is 8,000lbs empty & pin weight is 1,700lbs, my truck payload is 2,069, so I'm right at the limit by the time you add the pin box, wife & I (375lbs), propane etc, these trucks are far more capable than the load capacity! Only thing I disagree with is the 2018 Ford had way better mirrors than the Ram, they weren't any bigger but I could always see more out of them??
Nice setup I get the Weather tech for ever vehicle. Tailgate ladder😍 Why the yellow rose and not Florida? Asking because I will be doing this in a few years. I remember visiting my grandparents in Florida - the trailer always smelt moldy form all the humid. Cheers
so pin weight is 1490, payload is 2100, ~600 lbs for Mr. & Mrs Truck King, fuel and gear, and you're not even close? It's probably okay for occasional weekends. I would have got a longer bed and a 3500. Or a 2500 Hemi to get more payload.
You mentioned the weight of the tonneau cover. You also mentioned that the soft cover you can roll up, so you don't have to take it off. What about the hard rollup cover? Would it not work?
I have a 2018 Ram 2500 Cummins with the Ram Boxes (Ram Management System). It can tow 17,000lbs, but it's severely limited by a max payload capacity of 2,030lbs! Those rear coil springs make it a sweet ride (empty), but I'm limited on what I can tow just because of the payload capacity. Even though I can get rear suspension airbags, it wont keep me legit if I'm a pound over and get in an accident! I should have gone with a Ram 3500 Cummins SRW!
Thanks guys for another great video. I’m only now seeing it a year later. Noticed you did not install a slider hitch & would be interested to know how your towing experiences have been without one. Looking for a fifth wheel hitch for my RAM 3500 LH MegaCab & would prefer to not have the additional wt of a slider. Keep up the great work. Very educational for us novices. Love the growl of that loaded Cummins. Best sounding HD pickup out there.
@@Over_the_Hill_RV_Rookies I just did I long winded reply, but noticed it didn't go through. Maybe because I attached the link to the hitch, which is a no no. Anyways, turning is never a problem for me under "normal" driving conditions. It gets close when I try to put the 5th wheel back in next to the house. I always have a spotter and I have gotten real close to the cab. I was maybe at 75-80 degrees with about an inch to give.
I’m about to tow a 33ft bumper pull with a 2024 ram 2500 from Texas to California. What I’ve heard so far it enable tow haul mode, limit it from shifting into 6th gear and not drive too fast? Also full time engine brake. Is that wrong or should I do 6th gear and let the engine run lower rpm’s?
Thanks for this video! I think I mentioned to you before I purchased a 2022 a couple months ago Lone Star with the fifth wheel package with the intention to buy a fifth wheel in the future. Great Job guys! and a thumbs up
Well my friend by your figures 1,495 pin... 2,110 payload, that gives you only 600 pounds to play with! After you put all your camping gear in the fifthwheel, food, water, clothes, etc etc...... now fill the truck with diesel, put all the goodies you will have in the truck. Don't forget the weight of the hitch, your weight, your passengers weight etc, etc.. You will obviously be over the payload of the truck. It's a good looking set... but still over the payload!
Awesome video, thanks for all you both do. Bought a 2022 Ram Rebel Ecodiesel only to find out you can can the 2023 Ram Rebel with the 6.7 Cummins! Oh well lol
Great video! So many people screw up the towing endeavour due to not understanding the numbers. If I was going for a diesel I think I’d follow your footsteps.
I have the same truck and M20 hitch. Do you think it’s possible to pull a 5th wheel 40’ or longer? I’m looking to trade in my 30’ 5th wheel but still super cherry on towing…thanks
😂 yes I planned on never owning a camper again, so I bought a Gen2 Raptor then suddenly have found myself in need of a 3/4 or 1ton…. I do give Ram that their exhaust brakes do hit more strong than a Ford’s along with ease and cost of maintenance goes to the Ram. but the interior space is cramped and headrest are so huge it blocks the back passengers vision… I am honestly on the the fence between a RAM OR a Super Duty… 😬
The 2500 and 3500 Crewcabs are available with the 8ft bed. Our Crewcab 6.4ft bed is just right. It barely fits many places we go. And my daughter and son-in-law's 3500 Megacab, has to backup in some places our 2500 squeaks through.
@@jameseroh6544 all I’m saying is the 6”4 inches for a HD bed is on smaller size when half tons come with 6”6. Every situation is different obviously , I was just raising a point that both Ford and Gm other a 6”9 bed on their HD trucks.
Another very informative, professional and dynamic review with our good friends up North. Thank you for sharing the accessories. After this review I am looking at purchasing a Ram. What is the official Ram color of your awesome truck? Thank you for the awesome visits! Cheers, KP Colorado Springs, CO⛰🇺🇸
Can or should you use the exhaust brake all the time no matter if you're towing? I've seen mixed opinions on that. I have one of these trucks on order and it's my first diesel and I'm not sure when is best to use it and which mode. Is there a set it forget it type of setting? Thanks fellas! 👊
The purpose of the exhaust brake is to hold back the weight of trailer. You don't want it pushing you - and you don't want to be on the brakes either. Without a load I don't turn it on as I want the truck to roll as far as possible. - Saves brakes and fuel.
@@TruckKing If you put the exhaust brake on auto mode, it will only engage when you actually step on the brakes. Full on mode has it braking when you let off the gas pedal. I have had it on full mode most of the time. I have 7600 miles on my 2022 ram. I am doing an experiment to see if putting it on auto mode makes a difference with the fuel mileage. Like your channel, keep up the good work.
always a fan of your videos. good note about tow capability, I would be happy to tow at max once or twice a year, but if this is a daily or weekly tow, you want to have a bigger safety margian between your max weight and actual weight.
payload - 2110 lbs - 1495 lbs hitch weight Remaining 615 lbs Occupants 450-500 lbs Remaining 115-165 lbs Correct me if I am wrong but if you add weight to you're 5th wheel motorhome or truck itself (water, luggage etc) you would be over you're payload? Or pretty close to it ? Maybe I am wrong on how 5th wheel weight is distributed , and any added weight does not contribute to the 5th wheel hitch itself. Can you explain ? Have you weighed the hitch of the 5th wheel when fully loaded ? Enjoy you're videos by the way . Not trying to knock you're setup.
Yes a 1/2 can tow that. Every manufacturer has a spec that could handle that but nobody buys a regular cab, 2wd, base model pick up unless you are government. CCSB 4x4 is what people buy and that 1/2 ton can not
I enjoy your informative/real reviews. To save your lower front end of your 5th wheel, I would get the Mopar splash & mud flaps, which are on my 2021 3/4 ton Ram diesel. They are not cheap or easy to install but are very large/functional. Completely agree with you on if a 1/2 ton could do the same job, no one ever complains that they have to much truck. :)
Great video! I’m strongly considering a Ram HD, but the payload concerns me. I pull a 2020 Grand Design 2970RL with my 1500 Denali 6.2 v8. The truck I’m looking at is a 2022 Ram Laramie Cummins.
Thankyou Sir! More truck than trailer 👍🏾you hit it right out the park ⚾️with that one.🙋🏽♂️ Thankyou great show father and Son team! 👊🏽Exact same truck I'm looking at just pricey $$$🤦🏽♂️
With the "my F150 can tow this" comment, 99.9999% sure it can't. Heres the numbers for you. 10,000lb 5th wheel means 1500lbs tongue weight (15%) and the 100lb hitch and that already eats the entire payload of the average f150, which is about 1600lbs average. If you choose to tow this because your truck is rated for a "10,000 5th wheel" then you're endangering yourself and the people around you, as your payload also accounts for your weight, any gear, and any passengers. Throw the wife in the passenger seat and you add say 300lbs of people to that already overloaded truck. *Side note, you guys in this Ram 2500 with the 1500lb pin weight and 100lb hitch gives you 600lbs left for everything else in the truck. Now a couple going away for a weekend is fine, but throw kids and their stuff in the mix and you overloaded even the 2500.* Now if you are one of the 3 people on this planet who own a max payload truck with the 3000lb payload package that has a unique frame, suspension, and rear axle, then you can tow this. But this is not only rare because its only available in XL and mid spec XLT trucks, but ford makes almost none of these, and only has them for advertising purposes. So if you have one you likely custom ordered it and congratulations, you have an F150 with a higher payload than most F250's and while still having all the fuel economy benefits of a F150.
Your right my 2500hd 6.4 gasser has a payload of 3120 its prep for a 5th wheel but the one 5th wheel i needed was to much so got the same Floorplan in a tow behind with tongue weight of 1500lb but reduce when I load the garage with the toy and equipment which bring it to 1200lb tongue so I'm well good I put it on a cat scale
@@gardnetbush9768 Towing a toy hauler with a 2500 is really pushing it to its limit. With them being as long as they are with the weight of the toys in the back, sway is gonna be rough. Even a 3500srw is gonna hurt in the wind. It's not about the payload at that point, its about the wide stance of the truck and how planted it is.
10000- 13000 tow 1/2 trucks .. can tow in the flats of Kansas or Florida with one 150 driver try the Donner pass on I 80 or ike on I 70 get it up the hill and bring it down safe
I have a 2014 Ram 2500 I put over 500,000 kilometers on it pulling much bigger trailers all over the country and if you know how to drive and you're a confident driver it will more than get the job done I pull a trailer with a 1/2 ton Ram before I would use a fort regardless of the ratings just because I know Ford ratings are rated at sea level and flat ground and will derate the power really bad so you have to go slow in high altitude
What axle ratio do you have on that 2019 2500? I am about to take possession of a 2018 2500 Laramie and while I will only be trailering maybe 10% of the time, it does have the 3.42 axle ratio. Good for mileage unloaded, but will I regret it with a 12000 lb trailer?
My gasser 2500hd gets about 8 to 9 mpg when towing my toy hauler GVWR 12000lb but its only at 10000lb I took it to the scales it was great some time I had to look and see how fast I was going cause other then starting off from a dead stop it was like smooth sailing so you should be great and if yours a Diesel it would tow even better
Just bought a Ram 2500 2019 Laramie. When I tow my travel trailer should I tow in 2wd on highway or okay to tow in 4wd? Thanks for your helpful videos!
Mr. White, I have owned 4x4s for almost 40 years. The only trucks/SUVs that I have seen in that time span that you can keep on when driving on pavement are the vehicles with 4x4 auto or standby. This will engage the front differential when the truck senses loss of traction. The rest are not meant to be used in 4x4 on dry pavement. I hope this helps. Enjoy that ram, they are nice. I love my 2022 ram laramie 2500, crew cab, 4x4, 3.73 limited slip differential. I am in the process of up grading to a 5th wheel. It was hard to find because I was adamant on being with in specs all the way around. Safe travels!!!
Good morning Howard and Stephen, Do we need a special license in Ontario to drive a truck this big with a trailer this size? BTW, where do you store the spare tires and jack for the trailer.
2110 payload for a modern 3/4 ton is low… have you seen the payload on a Ram 2500 power wagon?… less than that?’ I’m sure it will have no issue hauling 3000 lbs though! These trucks are a bit underrated for sure.

That truck is real nice. I bought a soft bed cover for the same reason. I use my bed and take my cover off all the time.
Nice setup
I get the Weather tech for ever vehicle.
Tailgate ladder😍
Why the yellow rose and not Florida? Asking because I will be doing this in a few years. I remember visiting my grandparents in Florida - the trailer always smelt moldy form all the humid.
Cheers
spent time in both States. I like Texas better. Mind you the Florida Keys are special
Great video. If you make it down to south Texas, Corpus Christi area, we'll be looking for ya.
Is that truck a short bed or standard bed, and is that a stationary hitch or a slider
so pin weight is 1490, payload is 2100, ~600 lbs for Mr. & Mrs Truck King, fuel and gear, and you're not even close? It's probably okay for occasional weekends. I would have got a longer bed and a 3500. Or a 2500 Hemi to get more payload.
so satisfying to see a master at work
Nice Review! I have the 2019 3500 DRW. Let me know if you are in the Round Rock area.
You mentioned the weight of the tonneau cover. You also mentioned that the soft cover you can roll up, so you don't have to take it off. What about the hard rollup cover? Would it not work?
Maybe - haven't measured it to the fifth wheel - however I still do take mine off from time to time and that's when the weight really matters.
Don't blame the coil springs. Ram is just staying below the 10k gvwr.
Dodge really should bump up their GVWR to 10,500. I have a 2018 dodge 2500 Cummins it handles campers with pin weights of 2500 easily.
Funny how the only difference in the 3500 and 2500 is the coil and leaf springs. Everything else is the same
I like all the practical stuff you guys point out, and what works and doesn't. Great video!
Great to hear!
Recently tested a new hitch that helps with clearance. No slider needed. It’s on the channel.
@@TruckKing thanks just watched it. Interesting hitch. Sure has several advantages over heavy slider hitches
I have a mega cab and purchased the demco recon. Nice little 5th wheel hitch that is very manageable to get in and out.
@@barrigany how is your turning clearance with this hitch? Thanks.
Surprised that you didn't get a slide hitch. I got one after hit the cab twice when turning in a gas station.
Anyone able to find a link to the grab handles?
I’m about to tow a 33ft bumper pull with a 2024 ram 2500 from Texas to California. What I’ve heard so far it enable tow haul mode, limit it from shifting into 6th gear and not drive too fast? Also full time engine brake. Is that wrong or should I do 6th gear and let the engine run lower rpm’s?
just use towhaul and the engine brake. stick to the speed limit or lower in west Texas
@@TruckKing thank you!
You should be able to turn off the back up alarm in one of the set up pages in your instrument cluster.
No, it was a direct wired add-on by the dealer. Besides I like being annoying.
hows a link to that ladder? also does one ladder model fit all makes of truck?
Search Amazon. There's a ton of em on there.
You guys ever make it out here to Newfoundland?
Thanks for this video! I think I mentioned to you before I purchased a 2022 a couple months ago Lone Star with the fifth wheel package with the intention to buy a fifth wheel in the future. Great Job guys! and a thumbs up
Looks like he needed the long bed. My 04 has a bed plug.
Man that bed camera is a must have when hooking up the fifth wheel. I wonder if you can add one to a 2018 ram 2500
Aftermarket perhaps
Awesome video, thanks for all you both do. Bought a 2022 Ram Rebel Ecodiesel only to find out you can can the 2023 Ram Rebel with the 6.7 Cummins! Oh well lol
Great video! So many people screw up the towing endeavour due to not understanding the numbers. If I was going for a diesel I think I’d follow your footsteps.
The Cummins sounds so good under a load!
I have the same truck and M20 hitch. Do you think it’s possible to pull a 5th wheel 40’ or longer? I’m looking to trade in my 30’ 5th wheel but still super cherry on towing…thanks
At 40 feet you are in 3500 country. Not that the 2500 couldn’t pull it- it a payload issue
Why no long bed?
😂 yes I planned on never owning a camper again, so I bought a Gen2 Raptor then suddenly have found myself in need of a 3/4 or 1ton…. I do give Ram that their exhaust brakes do hit more strong than a Ford’s along with ease and cost of maintenance goes to the Ram. but the interior space is cramped and headrest are so huge it blocks the back passengers vision…
I am honestly on the the fence between a RAM OR a Super Duty… 😬
Great review! Beautiful looking truck.
good looking truck might want to check to see if its part of the fuel pump recall. Safe travels.
Good stuff. Hoping to see Ram make the move to a bigger bed to match Ford and GM HD with their 6”9 bed.
I personally prefer the 6’4 bed
This. 100%
How does the short bed truck do with turns and backing?
My truck is the 6'4" bed. The trailer clears the corners so you can jacknife pretty hard.
Which Cougar is that?

Another very informative, professional and dynamic review with our good friends up North.
Thank you for sharing the accessories.
After this review I am looking at purchasing a Ram. What is the official Ram color of your awesome truck?
Thank you for the awesome visits!

Like your channel, keep up the good work.
always a fan of your videos. good note about tow capability, I would be happy to tow at max once or twice a year, but if this is a daily or weekly tow, you want to have a bigger safety margian between your max weight and actual weight.
payload - 2110 lbs - 1495 lbs hitch weight
Remaining 615 lbs Occupants 450-500 lbs
Remaining 115-165 lbs
Correct me if I am wrong but if you add weight to you're 5th wheel motorhome or truck itself (water, luggage etc) you would be over you're payload? Or pretty close to it ?
Maybe I am wrong on how 5th wheel weight is distributed , and any added weight does not contribute to the 5th wheel hitch itself. Can you explain ? Have you weighed the hitch of the 5th wheel when fully loaded ?
Enjoy you're videos by the way . Not trying to knock you're setup.
That is why a gas engine 3/4 might be a better choice.
Hello from Dallas, Texas, hope to say hello in March.
After buying my 2021 cummins 2500 I wish I would have waited for a 3500. 2167lbs of payload is not very good at all.
Apparently trucks sold in Canada, require a backup siren?
That’s an add-on. I want to make sure you hear me coming.
@@TruckKing 😉
Great review. Concise and to the point. Thanks for sharing!
You're welcome!
I tow 20.000 a day with my 2500 2015 diesel every rig in the country has a inline 6 for 1 reason
Is there going to be a review on the camper?
hadn,t thought of that because its a 2017 (my own)
Yes a 1/2 can tow that.
Nice truck! We enjoy your reviews.
Awesome! Thank you!
The truck looks great towing the trailer.
Great video! I’m strongly considering a Ram HD, but the payload concerns me. I pull a 2020 Grand Design 2970RL with my 1500 Denali 6.2 v8. The truck I’m looking at is a 2022 Ram Laramie Cummins.
yes, higher the trim lower the payload. Strange but true
Thankyou Sir! More truck than trailer 👍🏾you hit it right out the park ⚾️with that one.🙋🏽♂️ Thankyou great show father and Son team! 👊🏽Exact same truck I'm looking at just pricey $$$🤦🏽♂️
Thanks 👍
I would love to buy some giddyupz handles but it appears that Homer doesn't ship to the United States 😕.
Idk why you didn’t go with long bed instead .
Now a couple going away for a weekend is fine, but throw kids and their stuff in the mix and you overloaded even the 2500.*
Now if you are one of the 3 people on this planet who own a max payload truck with the 3000lb payload package that has a unique frame, suspension, and rear axle, then you can tow this.
@@james2042 no it's not really trust me I check every inch of what it took thank you very much
@@james2042 and my is not a 5th wheel i also have factory airbags with 3120 payload and towing capacity of 14000lb
No you will be fine my toy hauler GVWR is 12000lb and mine pulls great
My gasser 2500hd gets about 8 to 9 mpg when towing my toy hauler GVWR 12000lb but its only at 10000lb I took it to the scales it was great some time I had to look and see how fast I was going cause other then starting off from a dead stop it was like smooth sailing so you should be great and if yours a Diesel it would tow even better
For 2019 they got rid of the 3.42 and has 3.73 or 4.10.
@@loveracing1988 this is true
Great video looking forward to upcoming ones on your RAM
I think you have a great setup..safe travels
Do you have a link for that bed ladder?
Sorry, no. I just did a Goggle search - there are at least a dozen
Just bought a Ram 2500 2019 Laramie. When I tow my travel trailer should I tow in 2wd on highway or okay to tow in 4wd? Thanks for your helpful videos!
2WD - no advantage to towing in 4HI
No
Beautiful truck and camper, thanks for the info.
You bet!
Nice rig. Enjoy your travels.
Thanks 👍
2110 payload for a modern 3/4 ton is low… have you seen the payload on a Ram 2500 power wagon?… less than that?’ I’m sure it will have no issue hauling 3000 lbs though! These trucks are a bit underrated for sure.
They are for sure. I’ve routinely pulled 20,000 lbs with my 3/4 ton truck
Off road suspension is softer to handle the bumps, and that will reduce your payload
U never have too much truck!
Really enjoyed the video.
Great review. Love the Giddy upz strap but can't seem to find it. Can you post up a link please?
