Chania, located on the northwestern coast of Crete, is one of the most picturesque and charming cities in Greece. Its stunning Venetian architecture, narrow streets, and beautiful Old Venetian Harbor make it an ideal destination for anyone seeking an authentic and unique experience.
The Old Venetian Harbor features charming Venetian-style buildings with colorful facades, picturesque balconies and narrow streets. These structures date back centuries and create a captivating atmosphere. The iconic lighthouse stands at the entrance of the harbor, offering panoramic views of the sea and the city. It's a popular spot for photos and sunset-watching.
Visitors can walk along the waterfront, enjoy meals at waterfront tavernas, and explore the historic buildings. The harbor is also a hub for boat tours and excursions.
The Old Harbor exudes a romantic and nostalgic vibe, especially during the evening when the lights illuminate the area.
The Fountain at Eleftherios Venizelos, formerly known as Sindrivani (Fountain) Square. It's situated in the old town area of Chania, close to the waterfront. The fountain is an octagonal marble structure with a diameter of approximately 3,5 m. It features a central basin that stands 1 m high. Inside this basin, there is a square pedestal supporting a circular basin. Water flows up from the center of the top basin and then cascades down into the octagonal basin below. Eleftherios Venizelos Square is a lively area, surrounded by cafes, restaurants, and shops.
The Presentation of the Virgin Mary Holy Metropolitan Church is a Greek Orthodox cathedral located in Athinagora Square in the old town of Chania. It was originally built during the late period of Ottoman rule, between 1850 and 1860. The church features three aisles: the central aisle is dedicated to the Presentation of the Virgin, the south aisle to the Three Hierarchs, and the north aisle to Saint Nicholas. Inside, you'll find icons by well-known Cretan icon painters from the 19th century. The church has a rich history, with a small church existing on the same spot since the early 11th century. The original small church was demolished by the Venetians, who replaced it with a warehouse. Later, the Turks converted the warehouse into a soap factory, which operated until 1850. The building was then donated to the Chania Christian community, who transformed it into a church. An icon from the original church is still preserved in the narthex (lobby area). The cathedral was damaged during the Greco-Turkish war of 1897 but was restored with the help of the Tsar of Russia, who also donated the cathedral's bell. The feast of the Presentation of the Virgin (21st November) is the official feast day of Chania.
The Municipal Garden of Chania (Kypos Dimotikou in Greek) is a peaceful oasis with lush green lawns, tall and huge trees, and colorful flowers. Families with children can enjoy the playgrounds and open spaces. There is charming café within the park where you can relax and enjoy a coffee.
Whether you're wandering the historic streets and the Old Harbor or taking a leisurely walk in the Municipal Garden, Chania offers a delightful blend of history, nature, and culture.
