This is what wrestling needs to be again, it may turn off some fanboys but the reality is second to none. This is needed so badly today, man I want to buy a ticket right now to see Ron and that ref hook it up.
Used to see Ron every week at the kingsport tn auction..he was really a nice guy he use to buy the jewelry and he collected oldcoins and gold..really a sweet guy..he passed away a few years back...
Gold. Wrestling Gold. It's sad that those of us in the northeast. Never had wrestling this good and this hot. The people in those southern territories were so lucky. This is some of the best promo work on a mic by a wrestler. This is a treasure. I wish Connecticut didn't have this library. I would someone that would release and make it all available for viewing had it.
This is awesome. I grew up watching Ron Wright in SMW. That guy can talk up a storm. It's a shame that his wrestling matches are hard to find and that he passed away a couple years ago.
Jim Hess' style was a lot like Lance Russell's style in Memphis: He always gave the heels a bad time with little comments and pretty much rooting for the faces. True definition of the southern style of Rasslin'
No, I doubt they are watching or care. To them, this would be an example of Southern Wrastling, which Vince McMahon reportedly hates. If the WWE sees anything wrong with today's product, it's likely that they aren't doing enough sports entertainment. They have writters for that, and they would probably want to get new writers.
@@MrPotatoesLatkie The reason VKM hates Southern rasslin' is because the stars of that era were much bigger than the promotions they appeared in. They could command more pay because they could draw in enough people to temporarily increase the population of a town, sometimes by a good bit. Vince doesn't want anybody being a big enough star that they can tell him to eat shit. And he's done well with that dubious goal - NO one in his company today is anything like a Rich, Piper, Armstrong, or Von Erich in terms of appeal and drawing power. So Vince can pay what he likes. So Vince dislikes Southern wrestling because it doesn't fit his business model. I hate yankee wrestling because it sucks.
i grew up on the same street as ron wright. im 25 now. i was good friends with one of his sons and it was cool seeing and hearing about what he used to do before i was born. he isnt in the best of shape right now though.
Now this is wrestling...This is the stuff I grew up watching...They made it so realistic in those days...I remember leaving the arena once and seeing a heel and a babyface about to fight in the parking lot and they had a bunch of other wrestlers trying to break them up...The next day on TV they would talk about what happened and build it up to something that would pack that arena....Those were the days...So much fun...If you have anymore old knoxville wrestling footage please post it!...Thanks!
They couldn't do anything with it if they wanted to. Vince spent so much time, money, and energy trying to produce something that didn't look like this that there's no real way he can make use of the good to be found in stuff like this. I must say, in my (so-far) 53-year sojourn on this planet, most of the truly hilariously crazy shit I've ever seen has been at insane Southern outlaw rasslin', and that goes for everything from Ginger the Bear bumping the heels in bear piss to some CRAZY ass very real fights that have broken out.
I needed to smile. So I came back to watch again. Loved his Closeup hold. At Sharps Ridge for the TV taping. He'd get a hold on the other guy. Then tell camera man to come in close. He was so funny. But I watched the chain matches. Very tough. Whitey Caldwell Ron Wright. Ron should have got into acting. He would jave been great.😢
Ron Wright was the innovator of talk wrestling a Saturday night couldn't go by without rooting against Ron and that beer opener he carried in his trunks. He'd open you up and the do that foot stomp to load that metal plate up in his boot.
That backhanded, wimpy slap was classic. A true coward, which was part of Ron's brilliance. One current expert on this area said that he didn't think Ron Wright could make it in today's wrestling because he couldn't be himself. My only experience with Ron in his prime is this, and his angry, arrogant, cowardly performance, and I think he would be such a surprise to most fans. His use of "yellow-bellied nitwits" seems actually restrained.
A lot of the heat Ron generated was from the simple fact that he was not a big, muscled-up dude. He looked like he worked in a grocery store or something, and EVERY shingle-toting, nail-driving construction guy in the crowd was fairly sure he could whip Ron's ass. And they ALL said so, loudly. Ron was EXTRAORDINARY at getting them to say it.
The best at this point Ron Wright fans can hope for is a WWE Legacy HOF berth. What that means is he'll be in their HOF but they don't do a whole induction like their main event wrestlers. They started doing this in 2016, and I bet it was Triple-H who came up with it so great names from the past can backdoor in. Bruiser Brody got in this way this past HOF (2019).
@mongomartin1 The #1 Hillbilly and I agree, He was one of the best talkers ever in the business...I remember him as a hell and a babyface...As a hell he used to yell and me and my friends not to take pictures of him and his wrestlers and that only professional photographers were allowed LOL...Yet you catch him out in the parking lot and he was always the nicest guy around...Signed autographs for all the kids...Certainly the most entertaining we ever had in k-town.
@dwracing39 This brings back a lot, remember him using his dental bridge as a weapon. The short arm scissors, also known as the "Ron Wrights directors hold". Also remember him breaking Boris Malenkos false teeth. Remeber later years he was a manager and showed up sometimes in a wheel chair. His mic work was better than a lot of what is around today.
A little more than that. I was in school around this time. On field trips we would go to McDonald's. You could get 2 burgers, fries and a drink for around a dollar.
This fucking rules Came across wrights obituary in the observor. Quick look up led to this GEM. I loved the old brawling style, and with angles like this, eastern tennessee wrestling woulda been right up my slley!!
WWF should of "hard" this guy when Vince was tryin' take over all them territories: he'd of took over the contracts of all them 'rasslers and 'fard' them clown managers, manage them guys hisself. Maybe except Elizabeth. That'd been a REAL Attitude Era and Hulk Hogan would of got hisself 'barried!' App. Mr. Wright must have already been busy running the Knoxville and surrounding area,or possibly. Vince was too scared to approach him. RIP Ron.
This aired 48 years ago, but I'm currently wanting a ticket to the matches in Lenoir City to see Ron Wright battle that referee.
"There's heat, there's too much heat, and then there's killing heat - Ron Wright and his brother got killing heat." - Ron Fuller
Or "Burn his airplane" heat at least.
lol funny that 😂

Amen I agree we used to go to Johnson City TN every Tuesday to watch Southeastern Championship Wrestling
When Jim Cornette told the back story of this card, it gets major props. The best "on the fly" segment EVER!!!!

Ron Wright = Brutally underrated. A true heel, he was way ahead of his time, imo. On the mic, pure entertainment.
yup so underrated same way ahead of his time

Check out his plan b video and you may change your mind.

This Man is an inspiration to me. He was a genius Heel.
I only knew Ron Wright as Tony Anthony's manager in Smoky Mountain, 20 years earlier he had the same voice but was still entertaining
To bad more video of this promotion is available . Ron Wright is pure gold on the mic.
The reverse open-hand back slap.CLASSIC
I almost pissed myself laughing at that. Ron was a master.
aw the good old days of territorial wrestling....love it!

lol "I don't handle chairs Ron!!!"
His promos could work at any time in wrestling. This could work now just as well as it did then.
In but 6 minutes you know who where an why, the only thing they don't tell you is the price of admission.
So awesome... Thank you Mr. Wright, you were a classic!
A True legend. Ron Wright is a true worker.
This was so genuine. Maybe because Ron Wright wasn't reciting lines from a script. Are you watching, WWE?
unlimitedrabbit I made a point earlier tonight that the wwe writers never stepped a foot in the ring these guys knew instinctively how to talk

Writers is the worse thing to happen to wrestling, even more than kayfabe being exposed.
A script? you mean date, place.
I know from this the why an where the rematch is...
You can't script this. This is legendary!

Man, I remember these days in Knoxville. Good memories of some good TV.
Thanks for posting these, man. Thanks a lot.
I love this announcer and how he blew up at the heel manager! First rate entertainment here.
Ron Wright is a complete nut. This is how a heel is suppose to act and I wish WWE would take a look at this piece of film.
Even if they did, they still would not learn properly
they tried with rico and he failed

This is classic in all ways.
Simply the best old school heel ever.

This is CLASSIC! Ron Wright and the old "warp your head off" hold! LMAO! And seeing "Big Jim Hess" brings back memories! HAHAHAHA!!!!

And his Chisel!
@@edwardmeek1906 Ron Fuller has some stories about that chisel. Ron Wright used that like a surgeon uses a scapel.
Lawd and gawd this was my weekend's lol love it
Wrestling promos 101. Taught by Professor Ron Wright.
This is what wrestling needs today a real southern heel
The ref was Devoy Brunson, who also wrestled on the side. Also announcer "Big" Jim Hess & Knoxville promoter John Cazana.

2:10 Wright has to fight to not smile and laugh. Great stuff.
Vince needs to put some if the guys from the old TN territory in the WWE HOF and Ron Wright needs to be the first one.
