Great video. Being 5’7” I was leaning towards LC GS last year but decided to go with standard 2017 GS Ralley and I’ve been able to manage it just fine in the minimum suspension setting. Hi...nice Vlog. I got the 2018 GSA last year. will ride it for sometime before considering the 1250. Good to see the freight train and the dog. safe rides
Thanks Shawn for sharing your knowledge and always in such a joyful way. As many I am in the conundrum of GSA lowered or not. From the spec sheet the lowered GSA would have the same suspension travel as the GS. So don't understand why the suspension would feel harder. But as you pointed moving the suspension down moves the wheels up in the parallelogram which shortens wheel base. GSA already 1cm shorter wheel base than the GS. Been trying to find out wheelbase of the lowered GSA with no success. From your dealer info, would you share this? As we know shorter wheel base means form flickable (sports bike like) and longer increases stability (cruisers). BMW maybe has shortened the wheel base on the GSA to compensate for a bike that looks bigger. So wonder how they though about the low chasi GSA option keeping with its design principles. Feelings are better guidance than calculations on a spread sheet, but knowing helps reconcile the heart to the mind. Thanks!!
Why is it that none of the reviewers mention that there is a suspension difference between the GS and GSA? Almost 1" more travel on the GSA (0.8" to be precise)
Great review Shawn and what a lovely dog, So the low chassie makes for a poorer ride than the standard? Being 5.6 the low would be my only choice (if I had the money for one). Oh great train footage. In fact this had everything, beautiful bike, nice pooch and awesome motorcycle. Thanks
It's not a poor ride, it's just a bit rougher due to the shorter and stiffer suspension. They're both made to ride equally as fast or hard... If you never ride a standard chassis, you'd think the low chassis was the best bike you'd have ever ridden. I'm pretty much nitpicking here... Lol The low chassis owner's absolutely love their bikes! @@ShawnSmoak Okay, so now I”m thinking maybe I should go with the low. I’m only about 5’8” and when I sit on a standard with the seat in the low position I can’t sit flat footed. What would your advise be?
Thanks for the vid shawn. It's been awhile since you posted anything on this channel. I am taking delivery of a left over new 2018 ultra limited to replace my 2012 ultra limited. You are right about the difference. These motorcycle companies do and always will have something new. At some point I will stop upgrading I have another 4 years and I will retire so no more expensive purchases.
When I get around having the chance to buy one not a question in my mind I'll definitely go for the R1250 GS definitely avoid anything low suspension or low chassis being 6.2". Get two of these 1.5 gallon stackable gas cans one on each side to have equal range. I just love the look of the slicker smoother body around that gas tank area. That is what caught my eye in the first place in the GS. So I shall personally stick to that I believe. Great review anyhow an amazing machine, take care! ✌️✌️
I have a GSA rallye 2018 Low version. Recently did the Alps. Over a week of riding the twisties.. stelvio pass among others; on a rental GSA 850. It is an excellent bike. However I could not tell the difference between my GSA R1200 rallye low which is a beauty in twisties!
Great video! I have a question and I apologise if something you mentioned and I missed. Do both standard and low R1250GS’s adventure or not come with adjustable seat? Or is that only on the low chassis? If anyone replies thank you! 😊
Hi Shawn. Great video. Where'd you purchase your bike and did you trade in your older model? I will be joining you in the next month, purchasing, outfitting and riding a GSA on the roads in the (warmer than Alaska), southwest some where.
I exchanged the 2018 R1200GSA Rallye for this 2019 R1250GSA HP at BMW Motorcycles of Vancouver, in Vancouver, WA (info in the video description). You’re going to love your new GSA!!! Thanks!
Shawn, nice to see a Vlog on here. Beautiful place to stop. That train was moving, holy smokes. Man oh man that German Shepherd was a nice looking dog and big too. Thanks for explaining the difference on the chassis. Have a great weekend.
So, I'm 5'7 and 30" inseam and would need the lowered version, but you said it will ride like a HD sportster with stock suspension. That's like riding a brick. So are you saying BMW hasn't taken all this in consideration? Now I'm second guessing ordering my GSA with the low suspension if it's going to ride like a brick!
Shawn, I really want the GSA, but i am inseam challenged at 30" i'm 5'9 but have been riding for 45 years on dirt and street, and am very capable . But I know they have a high seat. It will be ridden 99.8% street, I'am only really concern getting on and off, not so much riding it, and coming to a stop, I know I'll be on the balls of my feet. Not sure how tall you are, so want to get your thoughts.
Thanks for the review of the low suspension. I think I’ll pass on that after watching your review. I’m on my toes to hold the bike up with standard suspension, but I believe I can get used to that.
Hello Michael, have you changed the seats and on which settings is the seat height? I have a 29” inseam and still thinking about the low GSA. Ride safe brother.
People, don't do decisions like that based on UA-cam videos. If somebody doesn't like lowered version, it might still be best option for your measurements. These bikes are way too expensive to bee chosen lightly. Do your research and try different options to know what is right for you. You might find normal version is great on 95% situations, but those 5% are completely undoable and you need to go lowered route. You can also play with low saddle. Still lowered bike with normal saddle might suite your butt better. Liked the info about width of the bike, GSA not being wider. It's a no brainer when you see it.
Hey Shawn! Nice video! I added a 2019 GSA to my 2017 Indian “Penny” Chieftain. I need lots of practice as the GSA has 7 inches on me. I’ll get there! Cheers! 🤙
You liked the regular suspension rather than the low on the HP. I have a 29 inch inseam and the balls of my feet are on the ground. I'dl like very much to purchase an HP, but I'm curious, what is your inseam? You do not seem to have any problems with the regular suspension. My concern is just getting on and off the bike. I have a 2016 GSA with low suspension and a low seat and have no problems with that set up, but would like more suspension travel.
Thanks for a really helpful vlog, have been out on a 1250TE HP and it blew my mind, waiting to take an Adventure out but the weather in Northern England is cold and wet, I hear what you say about the differences between standard and Adventure and low seat models, always fancied an Adventure, seems like the way to go? By the way most freight trains in the U.K. are 60 or 75mph!
great video,... one question: (i'm sorry if you mentioned this) what is your height and inseam? I'm 5'9" with 30 inseam and i'm worried that I won't be able to balance it at stop lights unless i get the low suspension. Thoughts? I'm seriously considering the 1250 RS over the GSA since it's lower than GSA and the RS is better suited to my tarmac, "non-offroading", needs..
Hey Shawn, Thanx for another great video, you really do excell at these videos for your blog etc. Your timing is impeccable assuming that you didn’t know what time the Amatrak was coming. Also a wonderful tripe hound walks by to make it a great vid. Very informative, I’m sat on the fence between the HP and the exclusive, what are your thoughts ? Keep doing the videos I do watch them, big BM nut. John Wright. Manchester UK !
I have a 2018 GSA Rallye TE light blue and white with black luggage at a recent bike show i looked at this as a replacement but didn't like the gold wheels seeing it on video it looks great is it worth the extra cost to change so early?
Hey mister. How would you compare the suspension comfort and bumps absorbent feel compared to the old gsa? Is it the sampe or is it more comfortable to ride on bad roads? Thankyouuuu...
My old 2018 R1200GSA and the new 2019 R1250GSA are both using the same Dynamic ESA-II suspension systems, I notice no differences between the two... Both are fantastic and highly adjustable! Thanks!
Hi ! Im a new subscriber ! Great channel ! Thinking about a R1250GSA for my next bike (Im now on a Tiger 800 XCA). Do you know the ground clearance om the R1250 GSA vs the Low ? Im 174 cm (5´8) tall and can't really decide. I have ridden both but still tossing and turing. I ride a mix of touring on pavement and gravel roads (some off-road but nothing to gnarly). Another option would be for example Touratech -20mm fork springs ? (this would in my mind bring the bike down to R1250GS height). My brother rides the R1200GS Rallye (regular two-up seat in low position) and I feel fine on that one. I just love the look of the GSA !! Your advice would be greatly appreciated !!
Another nice video Shawn and very informative. At this time I am searching about GSA but my main issue is my height and weight. 5'4" and 140 lbs. I rode a Ducati Multistrada and my issue during stop because is too high and i got tired overtime. I guess the low suspension will be suitable. How do you compare maintenance cost of BMW compare to Harley? Let me know pls.
I love the beast look of the GSA . Does it lack power because of the extra Gasolin weight and deposit chassis? Would u buy the GSA? in summer the wider tank doesnt let ur legs refresh right?
Lol, I think you could tow a camper behind one of these and not notice a power loss..! No, you don’t notice any power differences between the GS and GSA... I would buy one tomorrow if something happened to this one. As I mentioned in the video, the protection of the larger tank does make for a warmer ride in extreme heat situations, but you can easily scoop-in cooling air with you legs... Thanks for watching!
Thanks Shawn, erring towards the GSA this time, currently riding a standard 2015 Triple Black, I’m 5’9” tall with a 29” inside leg. Standard GS is fine for me on low setting but I think I’ll need at least a low seat with the GSA. I’ve ridden a standard 1250 and loved it but I think I need to test ride the GSA before I make my choice. Biggest question is whether I go for the Rallye or the Exclusive, I love olives. Merry Xmas by the way...
Such and excellent review ! Great clear and concise explanation. BMW owes you brother! Sub'd and T-up. I wish you would go ride an Indian and review it. THE 2019 1250 GSA is probably the best M/C on this third rock from the sun. Its like you said, Its a mind thing... I hope your HD, is not is the 30% with major engine problems.
Now there's an idea for the BMW marketing team!!! Why not offer a free German Shepard with the purchase of the GS1250 Adventure. Or... They can give the letters (GS) a new meaning as in German Shepherd ( edition). EXCELLENT review Shawn......I love this bike. Let BMW know they can give me a GS 1250A for my idea.
How tall are you or what is your leg inseam? I'm riding the GSA Low but its my first bike since the late 80s and I have not ridden the regular suspension.
Shawn Smoak Did a deal with my local dealer today over the phone, going in tomorrow to check out whether to go for a low. I’m 5’9” with 29” inseam, salesmen thinks I’ll be fine with standard height on low seat setting, excited. Moving up from standard GS Triple Black to GSA Exclusive.
I’m really having a hard time deciding between a gsa low or regular gsa. I test rode the gsa and i was having to tip toe it until I played with the suspension setting and put it in low. I’m going tomorrow to look at the low gsa and ride it to see. I’m 5’10” with a 32 inch outseam so I’m assuming my inseam is probably 28 or 29. Worried about off-roading and getting unstable and having to put feet down if I use this bike as intended. Any tips or help with this would be wonderful
I've never owned a adventure bike before so would you mind telling me what's the difference between the model's, e.g the rally?, the standard model and any other model I may have missed, I am just referring to the GSA bike's now. Thanks

Mark Rodda does that make the gsa more comfortable ??
The big question is , with a 31 inch inseam which one is best to flat foot. The std with the seat set to low or the low version and seat set to low?
Hi Shawn... love your videos! Is there a quick visual reference to tell if the bike is lowered or standard height?
Thanks Mark!
Thanks for the explanation on differences. Thanks for the train too.
Very nice bike and Video, im tihinking about get a harley breakout or a gs 1250 its a very Hard selction For me
Great video! I have a question and I apologise if something you mentioned and I missed. Do both standard and low R1250GS’s adventure or not come with adjustable seat? Or is that only on the low chassis? If anyone replies thank you! 😊
They are both adjustable. 😉
El Lebza thanks 🙏🏻
Thanks!
So how would you compare the 103 Street Glide to the GSA 1250. I have a Street Glide, but its just too damn big and heavy for around town riding.
Where ypu at?! I grew up in Vancouver.... and its lookin very familiar. Great video. Definitely getting one (and a 500EXC)
Dude i test rode my first ever gsa yezterday. And i am trading my 4 month old s1000xr in for a rallye model brand new its 7 week wait for it.
What about cornering with a GS or a GSA, does it feels the same? Thanks
Shawn, nice to see a Vlog on here. Beautiful place to stop. That train was moving, holy smokes. Man oh man that German Shepherd was a nice looking dog and big too. Thanks for explaining the difference on the chassis. Have a great weekend.
Yep, ordered my Exclusive this morning!
I'm 5'8" with a 29" inseam...
Thanks Thomas!
Shawn Smoak Do you have the low seat?
Great video man. I can’t wait to pick my new gsa adv ralley in 2 weeks. Safe riding 👍🏍
Wow it does not seem 10mins ago that you were there with the Rallye.. Im liking this one as well now..
👍👍
Good info.
Love my 1200Gsa... very fun to ride.
great video,... one question: (i'm sorry if you mentioned this) what is your height and inseam? I'm 5'9" with 30 inseam and i'm worried that I won't be able to balance it at stop lights unless i get the low suspension. Thoughts? I'm seriously considering the 1250 RS over the GSA since it's lower than GSA and the RS is better suited to my tarmac, "non-offroading", needs..
Hey Shawn,
Thanx for another great video, you really do excell at these videos for your blog etc.

Thanks!
Thanks for the Fantastic review, And beautiful nature. Nice Bik, i like it
Hey man. I’m 5’8”. It’s a bad thing to buy a low chassi? I’ll had a much difference experience?? Thank’s from Brazil
Good vid. Has this bike not got a quick shifter??
Oh yeah... Shift Assist Pro, which allows seamless up and downshifts.
Thanks Niall!
5:25 even the dog is in awe of that beautiful monster!
Great video! I wondered, what do you use to film and also create the audio while you're riding?
Chukky, take the exclusive!
The best colour for this adventure bike! ;-)
Berns M Did a deal today😀
the older Adventure had a diffrent gearsetting with higher gearratio in 1. gear. thats not the case anymore??
Such and excellent review ! Great clear and concise explanation. BMW owes you brother! Sub'd and T-up. I wish you would go ride an Indian and review it. THE 2019 1250 GSA is probably the best M/C on this third rock from the sun. Its like you said, Its a mind thing... I hope your HD, is not is the 30% with major engine problems.
Thanks David!!
The road you riding awesome... where it is? Place name please
Thanks Sachin! Toledo, Washington
Wow you can do 50mph in 6th gear? I do max 4th on my V-strom 1050XT.
Excellent review !!
Yup, that's the model/color for me
Now there's an idea for the BMW marketing team!!!
Do you think low chassis would be fine for someone who is smaller that doesn't really push the shocks to their limits?
Im seriously considering buying the 2020 bmw r 1250 r. Can you do a ride on one. Love your videos
How tall are you or what is your leg inseam? I'm riding the GSA Low but its my first bike since the late 80s and I have not ridden the regular suspension.
I'm 5'8" with 29" inseam...
Thanks Benjamin!
@@ShawnSmoak Wow whats the seat height of the gsa with the standard seat in low?
Hey , what are those straps on top of the panniers ? BMW original accessories ?
Yes, these are BMW accessories. Work awesome as carry handles and be extended to tie down extra gear, such as a good sized duffle bag...
Thanks!
@@ShawnSmoak Thanks , i guess those can be found in the accessories catalog ?
Shawn nice vlog on the BMW thanks, nice ride. Be Cool and Ride Safe🇺🇸🏍🐶🎅🏻
Thanks
You are a brave man Shawn Smoak!!! That was a big German Shepard!!!
Showed Kelly the dog footage tonight and she made a good point, "Look at his size next to that huge GSA..!" I was sure glad he was friendly!! Lol
Thanks Walter!
@@ShawnSmoak someone was smiling on you. You wouldn't of been fast enough to get away. You would of had to go to plan B. I'll leave it there. 🙏🙏🙏🙏
I got a big German Shepherd, she's the softest most loving dog i've ever known, totally obsessed with me, even waits by the door for me to have a shit! They like a lot of other dogs get a bad press I think, no dogs born nasty, love them and they'll love you back like you wouldn't believe
Got my GSA HP coming in a few months Shawn, watching all your stuff right now!
Gets me excited listening to you getting so excited!
SHIT!!! That sounds a bit strange doesn't it, you know what I mean
Have a great Christmas and New Year from here in England
@@firebladedan1 where I grew up. They are trained to get you. I dont think any animal is born bad. Training is everything. Especially if abused. But when in doubt. Proceed with caution.
Beautiful bike amazing vlog.
Super cool video, i'd love you to get Kelly to take a pic of you sat on the GSA .
Sounds a bit creepy, no matter how nice he asks Shawn, keep your clothes on mate
@@firebladedan1 He ? I'm sure Shawns got a body to die for but i'm more interested how he reaches the floor with a 29 inch inseam....
Is the steering rake different to the std GS and length of swing arm?cheers.
Thanks!
Shawn, can you advise what the total seat height would be on the R 1250 GSA standard height with the low seat installed?
I recently test rode the 1250.. twice.. extremely impressed.. but price tag is fierce.. They were practically giving away a Tiger 1200 XCA- ( $8K less than the GSA and comes with a full set of OEM panniers) So I test rode it since it is compared to the GS... wasn't horrible, but just something about that GS and cant get it out of my head now... just on the fence on trading my K16 B for the GSA.? Enjoy your videos down to earth and very informative
Did you buy the standard suspension or the lowered one?
Does the adventure name represent the a in gsa
Just came over from the 850 video. You say your 5'8" . 29" inseam. So your 1250gsa is no problem ? Flat footed? Low seat?
Balls of my feet, which I'm more than happy with. It's the standard seat set in the low position...
Thanks Michael!
I’m 5’6” inseam 27” and ride a 2014 1200 GSA with low seat no problem. Just ordered a new 1259 GSA lower chassis, but am concerned about your comments. “ it rides differently “ . Can you elaborate. Might want to change my order.
Regards Kevin
I am 5’8” and decided to go with R1250GS HP version with sport suspension (taller shock than standard). No regrets. Love the tall sport suspension.
My riding buddy is 5’6”. He rented a R1250GS standard chassis with a low seat in lowest position. He had no problems handling the bike on and off road.
That was Penelope pitstops dog looking to see off the hooded claw, lovely bike
Hello, i`m thinking about to buy a GS 1250 adv , BUT my height is 5.9. what do you suggest to me? Low or Standard Version? Thank you! PS: Suspension changes manually in settings to low?
What's the suspension travel of GSA 1250 low
Your not the first person that says the regular suspension rides better than the low suspension. I will look for a regular suspension GSA. Whether 1200 or 1250
Hi,i'm 1 meter 75 and i wondering if i need a low bike or i go for standard,thanks
