Was about to write another comment like yours but why if you already said it on point.
If you're going to put a click-bait title like "DON"T BUY THE GH5", don't put an affiliate Amazon link in the description that goes straight to a page where you can purchase the GH5. Extremely hypocritical.
Also I don't know why you're speaking in absolutes like "DON"T BUY THE GH5" because one OPTIONAL aspect of the cameras system isn't working specifically for YOU. The GH5 is absolutely loaded with features that appeal to a broad array of consumers. To completely write off the camera, and say that people shouldn't buy it, is just your frustration talking. Don't compromise your integrity as a filmmaker just to pull in viewers. If you have a problem with V-log, then title your video appropriately, and don't try to pull in views with a click-bait title. I'm sure you can tell from the sharp increase of dislikes on this video compared to your other ones, that many people disagree with your findings.
Finally, a quick search on the internet would have revealed that the problem lies with Premiere and not v-log:

Whilst I love this channel, the message is completely different to the CLICKBAIT title. You're saying don't buy VLOG not the ENTIRE CAMERA. I don't agree with the way you're negatively putting entire cameras under the wrong perception for views. This over time will cause me to slow stop trusting you and what you say at least with your titles.

Are you serious right now??? Even Panasonic says DO NOT SHOOT VLOG IN 8BIT !! Everyone who has owned a GH4 knows not to shoot VLOG in 8bit the codec simply can't handle it. And when shooting VLOG I would ALWAYS recommend shooting externally to completely bypass the codecs compression algorithm. THAT is why you're seeing "red and green splotches" as you so eloquently put it which btw has a technical term... "macro-blocking" and it happens because the codec can't handle how much you're pushing it because there isn't enough data. Hence why you need to shoot 10bit when shooting VLOG. You're a huge channel and you put out a video showing basically that you don't know to use or work with LOG footage properly otherwise you would know this blatant and rudimentary fact. Sigh, this is why I hate bigger channels putting out videos like this because you haven't done your research or homework and because something doesn't , and I quote "work right out of the box immediately", you're telling people they shouldn't buy or even return a specific device because YOU didn't know how to use it properly. I've shot VLOG L for broadcast television and corporate video projects for multiple clients with both the GH4 and now GH5 and NOT ONE PERSON has complained about "red and green splotches that make the video unusable" because...I actually read up on how to properly use VLOG before attempting to use it professionally. To each his own, but to me this seems like you had no idea what you were doing, shot some footage incorrectly, then blamed it on the camera when it "didn't work" how you want it to. Not trying to hate, just hate the ignorance that is so prevelant in this video.

Just a thought, but could it be that your model has a malfunction? I've been loving v-log so far. I used it in various situations (low light, daylight, studio,..) and had super great results.

So I just watched a whole video about your VLOG hate, but the message is "Don't buy GH5, and if you did, return it". This was such a lame clickbait. You lost my respect man.
Just subbed the other day and now I'm second guessing that action. Honestly, I think you are slamming an incredible video camera for a feature that is optional. The GH5 outperforms most of its competition in every way, and the lack of good VLOG does not outweigh the other amazing features this camera offers. I really have enjoyed browsing the other videos in your channel, and you're very smart and articulate your thoughts fluidly. But this video just left an absolutely sour taste in my mouth.
Vlog came from the Varicam and gh4 users begged for it and it was delivered. There was only one caveat. You HAVE TO RECORD IN 10bit. This is so well documented it's insane that someone on his level doesn't know. That's why we got 10bit internal. Notice all his footage was shot in 60p. Unless he was shooting to the inferno recorders he was capturing 8bit. Purchasing Vlog is a pita but for a good reason. So noobs wouldn't do exactly what this expereienced dude did. Grab the camera, shoot in Vlog with inadequate data (8bit) and complain that Vlog is broken.

Complaining on 8-bit V-log is like shoting with Jpeg and trying to edit it like Raw-footage. Hope you have a color calibrated monitor that supports 10-bit when u switch to Resolve... Or else you will probably make a "part 2" of this video... And blame the gh5 and Resolve...
Just because V-log doesn't work out for you in 8 bit, the whole camera with all of its features and profiles are not worth it at all? It has been well known since v-log came out for the gh4 it doesn't do well in 8 bit, that's the very nature of. 10 bit v-log still has to be explored when shot internally since it's sensitive to wrong exposure but it's far from unusable atm from what I have seen and that's even without the summer FW update.
You have a lot of subscibers and young aspiring filmmakers that don't understand the true tech behind colorscience, grading and log profiles and will believe whatever you say since you are a 'role figure'. By stating to not buy the Gh5 or get a refund only based your user experience with v-log is pure misinformation for your audience.

Any shooter worth their salt knows you NEVER shoot LOG in 8 bit. If you want slow-mo LOG, you should've switched to 1080p 10Bit.
Agree. The only exception where this worked for me was the old C300 MK1 with C-Log. But something extremely flat as SLog2/3 or VLog in 8Bit clearly falls apart to banding hell when stretched out. 256 values per channel are way too less, obvious that it can't work. Total nonsense too completely destroy this 10bit-capable camera because the 8Bit Log-Footage looks bad (and wondering if that is an LUT or NLE issue...damn, thats just obvious by definition)....misinforming video, unfortunately with a lot of clicks

You do some great content dont get me wrong but it feels like you made that upgrade because you heard that vlog was better without knowing why its better. Vlog is a feature for on set filmmakers where your not dependent on slo mo. it requires 10 bit 4:2:2. its only then that it allows for the smooth transition between colors thats what 10 bit 4:2:2 means. for run and gun filmmaking your better off shooting in cinelike d or v because then you can get that flat image but still have access to the higher frame rate features because its not flattening out the image as much not requiring higher bit rates.

It's amazing how much complaining there is about this camera (and every other model). It can be simple: if you want great skin tones-Canon. Great low light-Sony. Great all-around video-Panasonic. If you want the image quality of a $50K camera, spend $50K. Everybody seems to want everything for nothing and a magical LUT that will make it look pro. When you buy something brand new, there are going to be software comparability issues. That's what happens when tech and software companies are releasing new products every season by demand. The "budget" camera market has definitely become spoiled with unrealistic expectations.

I completely disagree. Slog is atrocious compared to vlog, EVEN in 8 bit on the gh5. Light touch on the slog and it crumbles. I pushed hard on the vlog, both in 8 and 10 and it hardly fell apart. I really don't know what you're talking about.

More irresponsible journalism. Please learn how to use V-log before you spread lies all over the internet. Plenty of professional users have found V-log on the GH5 to be very good. I get that you're trying to create content that attracts viewers, but please re-consider posting videos like this in the future. This is obvious click bait that isn't supported by your comments. Shooting V-LOG in 8bit and you're outraged at the results? That's where you lost credibility regarding this topic. You need to gain more experience and work on your craft before making these kind of uninformed comments. Perhaps just focus on actual work and shooting for a while before passing judgement on things you don't appear to have a grasp of. At the very least, you could have entitled this video "Don't Purchase V-Log if You Primarily shoot in 8bit" - that would have made a bit more sense based on your point of view. Well, I didn't buy a GH5 for V log, so guess I'm quite happy with it as it is.
It's hard to really know what you are talking about with the VLOG when you show the video footage graded. That means it could be your process of color grading.

WTF dude?! Just shoot on Cinelike D and turn contrast all the way down. You´ll see that you can see pretty pretty amazing results with minor color-grading. Plus you have to keep in mind the price too. 2K for that level of performance and flexibility? Preeeetty good if u ask me...
I know this isn't a solution but I have been recording to the atomos ninja inferno 10bit and it looks amazing! I can also record 4k 60fps 10bit. And the footage is so easy to edit in premiere. That said, the compressed 10bit to sd card is almost impossible to edit in premiere.

What you're describing are issues that come with shooting V-log internally. I've seen this in Sony cameras, it's less pronounced because the noise floor is higher but can still be seen.
V-log should only be used when shooting to an external recorder, there is just not enough information in camera when shooting to 100mbps & 150mbps for V-log. All these issues are gone when shooting to an external recorder.
I can see a lot of your clips were in 4K 60p which internally is not ideal at all, especially not in V-log. 150mbps is just not enough to deal with all that data. Maybe the 400mbps summer update will change that.

Got the GH5 and the V-LOG picture profile and what you're saying is a little bit true. But only the person who edit the video will notice those color """problem""" (yeah three quote bc it's not that big of a deal). Sony A7S II is the only alternative for the GH5, and I personally don't think it's as good (tested both). I'm glas I bought the GH5 and I will not return it, very nice camera.

Is it not so that you always have to make practical choices with these types of cameras? And with these type of cameras I mean small form factor and packed full with features. My experience is that V-Log on the GH4 is also unusable, same with most of the Sony 8bit sensors/codecs if you use S-Log3. A flat image style to increase dynamic range just needs more then 8bit of color depth. But that dynamic range and that bit depth are IMO not really the features why people buy these types of cameras. You get a lot in a small package for a pretty small price. And if you for a particular shot need more dynamic range you have the option to go 1080p 10bit on the GH5 internal. That’s a pretty awesome option if you ask me.
I am not a GH4 owner and probably will not own the GH5 either. I also don’t have a lot experience with these smaller cameras cause of the sets that I work on, but I do think there is a lot of benefit and a lot to offer for a lot a lot of people with these types of cameras. It’s only if you want to shoot a extreme flat color profile and want a above average of dynamic range and you want to shoot in 4k as well, then you shouldn't buy a GH5 or any other small form factor camera. The technical possibilities are just not there yet. Right now there are still to many technical limitations to achieve such a setup that you are talking about in such a small form factor. If the technical possibilities where there at this point, Blackmagic would have launched a “Pocket Cinema Mk II”. And they didn't only because of this reason, quote on the NAB2017 floor of a BMD rep. “It is not possible yet to achieve such a big bit depth in 4k in such a small form factor at this point, if it was we would have done it”.
Some millennials have no patience. The GH5 is the best camera you can get for your money. Once they can have a software update for 10bit it's gonna be fine.

it's 2020, I bet it was a long way for you of remorse on why the hell you did this video, but you kept it, that's likeable.
Sorry for all the flack you've gotten on this video. I've gone whole hog into the GH5 and really appreciate all it's powerful features but the VLOG is pure garbage. All these gh5 defenders drinking the kool-aid must have not ever used log on other cameras before. I've used VLOG extensively even on the DJI Osmo, tiny sensor and paltry 60mbps bit rate on 8bit and have never encountered the kind of crazy cyan/magenta macro blocking as i've gotten at 150 mbits on 4k GH5, it really is out of control and i'm glad more people are putting the pressure on Panasonic to fix it or provide real alternatives.
In contrast grading log on my cheap DJI Osmo was flexible and capable enough to never really cause me any problems while shooting across some really diverse lighting situations. For example check out my Japan video with over 1.3M views all shot on the DJI Osmo in 4k VLOG. Now contrast that to the video I shot at Burning Man in 4k log on the GH5. It gets particularly bad when there is a lot of sky when the sun is out (ex @2:24). That's even worse than skin tones as it goes across the frame. It was impossible to grade and I pretty much gave up on that one and just focused on minimizing the damage instead of grading the way I wanted to.
Panasonic VLOG is certainly by far the worst feature on the GH5 even worse then the unusable continuous autofocus. Other readers here don't let the Panasonic shills confuse you. Panasonic doesn't advertise that it should only be used for 10bit like these fools in the comments are saying and if that were the case, it shouldn't even be an option available for 8bit in camera. There should be a respectable 8bit VLOG there to replace it. Those that say VLOG can't work in 8bit are also fools, again just try grading 8bit VLOG FROM ANY OTHER CAMERA and see the difference yourself. Alas, i'm too far invested at this point to switch. At least I get 4k/60 and some sweet sweet tiny dual IS lenses for travel.

Firstly. Some of your prime examples have a shit ton of grass nearby with intense sun shining onto it.
Of course you are going to get reflected green light bouncing around off the grass.
So I wouldn't trust those clips to prove vlog gives you green patches.
Secondly I do agree that vlog messes with your colours. But then so does any LOG profile.
Personally I find Panasonic vlog more accurate in terms of colour than Sonys slog.
(I find slog does protect highlights better than vlog though)
And yes canon colour is better than Sony or Panasonic.
But I think you maybe overreacting here saying it's unusable.
You just have to learn it's quirks and grade accordingly.

I'm not getting the problem you are getting with VL. I dont know anyone who is. The GH5 is a great camera - I dont agree with your assessment of the camera or V-Log
Canon is also charging $99 for their C-Log profile. Panasonic is not the only one to do this. Also I think the V-log will get a lot better when they drop the 400 mbps ALL-I codec.
To summarize... If you want to use V-Log, make sure you are using 10bit. 4K 10bit is available on the GH5 now. I am a GH5 user and I agree that it has it's downsides. Autofocus sucks and the low light is not the best. You should do an update review, post firmware 2.0, if you still own the GH5.
I hate to say it, but I honestly have to agree with many of the other comments here... the first thing I thought when I saw your footage and the issues you were highlighting was "Looks he shot the log in 8 bit" and the second thing I thought was "Annnnddd... his color grade is not good."
I've seen way too much GH5 footage that looked absolutely amazing without any of the red-green blanching issues you are showing here.

Just wait for the hybrid log gamma hdr update coming in the summer, before you decide to sell your GH5. Unlike V-log this hybrid log gamma update is designed specifically for the GH5

Have you tried using another GH5 with V-Log? Maybe you have a defect. I think it's over-exaggerated to dismiss the entire camera because of a picture profile being faulty. It would be equivalent to saying "return this camera because you cannot film in ISO 100" I don't think anyone is buying this camera to solemnly use V-Log. I don't even own it, and quite frankly I don't think it's a necessity. I'm a C300 Mark II and Ursa 4.6k user, and the GH5 is a powerhouse, hands down.

I love my Panasonic GH4 but have the same issues with red and green blotchy color banding when shooting in VlogL. Too many shots ruined. A major reason for holding off upgrading to the GH5. Everything else about both these cameras is amazing, especially for the price. The extra 2 stops of dynamic range looks better then Cine-D when shots turn out good, but there's always a risk of nasty color blotches.
This has to be the worst video I have seen. What a crappy thing to say, The GH5 is one of the best value cameras you can buy for the quality you get and it seems like you have no idea how to use it. DO NOT SHOOT 8-bit VLOG, go for 10bit or use an extrenal recorder from atomos man instead of telling people not to buy the gh5
I have never seen such a disliked camera review video. You are blaming it on V-log when it sounds like it's your LUT or you are blaming he a camera for the operators shortcomings. I have looked all over and haven't seen anyone else with the same problems. I'm unsubbing because I feel like you have a huge bias towards your own products, you give harsh advice, and sometime frankly it seems like you are out of your depth on some of these issues. I was under the impression that you ONLY shoot V-Log in 10 bit...
I think this is a user error more so than any fault of the camera itself...
so has the Vlog improved since 2017 when you made this video?
If you read the comments, most of them highlight him recording in 8bit rather then 10bit, the problem isn't the vlogL it's his error, and Panasonic also recommend to record in 10 bit due to codec 🙂
hmmm I'm colour blind, so things like this absolutely terrify me! I can't see what you are pointing out! I went with the 80D instead because I have to depend on Canon's awesome colour profiles.
Is the Vlog not working on premiere the only reason not to buy the GH5? Adobe announced they are working on an update to fix that, if anything the title should be "don't use Premiere to edit your GH5 footage".

Worst advice ever. The GH5 is a game-changing, break-through camera. 4:2:2 10 bit, ALL-IntraFrame Codec, with V-Log and 12 stops of DR, true 4K, recorded internally, with a wave form monitor, zebras, and manual exposure assistant. Now only $1,300 with a 3 year warranty. Are you kidding me? I would rather take advice from a guy with one tooth.
Don't shoot 8-bit footage in log. As simple as that. You'll have 16.7 million colours available in 8-bit compared to over one billion in 10-bit.
Try to do the same thing (shooting log in 8-bit) with Sony, Canon, Fuji or any other brand and you're gonna end up with exactly the same result: image falling apart instantaneously, as soon as you grab the curve or pick the color qualifier in post, which is ESPECIALLY the case for skin tones. Just remember: 8-BIT FOOTAGE AND LOG DON'T MATCH!
This is a clear example of not knowing how to properly use a vlog workflow. Also, this is clickbait BS And shows the unprofessional nature of this channel. Of course youtube is filled with very little true professional advice and the opinions of those who make recommendations based off of their inability to use something correctly. The a7s, gh5, 5d 4 and so on are all amazing cameras. Any professional can make JUST about any camera look amazing and any idiot can make ANY camera look terrible. Also, my favorite people are the ones who comment about how this is trash, overrated (I’m talking about anything) and they have never used the camera.
10bit doesn't have macro blocking. So the only thing missing in gh5 is vlog in 4k 60fps. You realy think it's worth returning you camera because of that? Would you prefere to cary arond something like ursa mini for the 60fps 4k instead? What is your camera recomedation for 60fps 4k then?
