Quinine is indeed present in trace amounts in tonic water. The indigenous people in South America taught the Spanish that you could use quinine (Chinchona) bark to treat malaria. The Brits picked it up and taught their troops to take it in British India, and the troops started mixing it with sugar and carbonated water to reduce the extreme bitterness, thus creating tonic water. (And of course the Brits mixed their beloved gin with it, leading to the gin and tonic.) Nowadays it's only used in very tiny quantities to impart flavour though. Quinine is actually still used as a medicine of last resort though, because it works against the most dangerous type of malaria in some parts of the world where it hasn't evolved resistance. (It also makes tonic water glow under a black light!)
Quinine is prescribed for muscle cramps as well. For several years in the 2000s my Mother had a prescription for quinine for this purpose (she has since recovered). I was aware of its former use as an anti-malaria drug, but not that it was still used for other purposes.
@thisZelse are you a time traveler from the future, this video came out 2 days ago. UA-cam comments says you posted your comment 1 month ago! how? LOL Good info on Quinnine. 😀
@@royboy4199 Haha, I wish. As to how: he doesn't mention it much, but our illustrious host has a Patreon, and sometimes he'll post a sneak preview of a video.
I used to think post10 was doing some dangerous stuff on his main channel. I now realize that this channel is where he's actually putting his life on the line!
Pepsi and Coke products had those foam labels in the 80s, on 16 ounce glass bottles. And probably into the early 90s I believe. Also, as you talked about before, those caps had the little gasket in them that kept them sealed so well. Today its so hard to find anything of quality, they make everything as cheaply as possible.
You’re my favourite UA-camr. Please keep uploading. The holidays are always hard for me & my family. Jan. 3rd will mark 12 years since my grandpa passed away. I’ve been watching you for the past couple of years and you make whatever I’m going thru easier.
Wow! I remember when we'd hang out with my Dad on the weekends. He'd have sodas with styrofoam labels. I loved peeling them in as straight lines as my young fingers could. I really wish I could go back for a day with my Dad and his orange truck with the styrofoam-labeled soda bottles!
Oh yeah! On break at work during HS and college I would often try to get the label off in one long thin ribbon. Not just a beverage, but entertainment too. Haha.
Dang I completely forgot about those styrofoam labels. It’s crazy all the small insignificant stuff we forget but get so excited when we’ve been reminded lol. I love watching this type of stuff, there’s another guy that eats old ass military rations from all over the world dating from recent to all the way back to ww1. Pretty neat stuff all around.
That Schweppes bottle sure is a throwback to the 70s-80s and even early 90s when things like 7up and Coke was put in glass bottles and wrapped in a styrofoam sleeve that way like a cozy to keep the contents cool! I'd forgotten about that!
I grew up in the 60s and 70s and I think you are right about carbonation...I found it hard to drink pop (out of a bottle back then) due to carbonation. I don't drink pop any more but it's nothing like it was when i was a kid.
I think that’s what made our soda/pop good. There was nothing like an ice cold pepsi on a summer day with that fizz tickling your nostrils as you take a sip. Nothing more refreshing to a kid in the 80’s without coming out of the garden hose. Lol
Omg yess! I fall asleep to his videos too! Glad someone else does the same thing as me. I'm not sure if it's his voice or what, but it always puts me right to sleep(if I'm trying to sleep)
I'm so surprised there was that much carbonation after all that time! Another great video - thank you for all the content recently, it's been fantastic!
This is an awesome video! Awesome glass bottles and labels are cool enough.. but i was NOT expecting that high powered carbonation 🔥 Just shows they bottled things much better back in the day with good seals. Thanks for sharing
It's true about the carbonation, I work for a beverage company. The carbonation will permeate through plastic easily, and also to some degree aluminum. Glass is going to hold that carbonation in extremely well.
Ah yeah homie! Breakin out the Slim Jim mugs!! You know it’s gonna be a good video when he busts those out. Canada Dry is usually Ginger Ale nowadays. Not sure if that’s what that is too.
I haven’t made it to the end yet but I was laughing at the thought of what could happen if you poured all of those down the toilet. My weird brain imagined the septic tank exploding from the carbonation, or the toilet lid flying up as the toilet lets out a huge burp. The joys of a good imagination, lol. I needed that laugh though. Thank you! 😊
I really appreciate your channel bud, it is so interesting and entertaining. I collect various items and display them as well. Thank you for all you do bud. Shawn from Wenatchee Washington State👍
Post, interesting video even though I am not a fan of club soda. Did you have your work outfit on because you are back working for the log company? I did like how you had the camera at eye level. It was like we were sitting across from you. I also like how you keep the camera running after saying goodbye. Remember to set your clocks back tonight. 😊
Great work Post. Did you know the Village People, that’s a band by the way, formed in 1977, the same time that soda was made. 😂 Also do you know if you drink enough gin and tonics you will keep the mosquitos away and stop you getting malaria 🦟
Loved it! The hat. The carbonation. The whole vid I opened some store brand seltzer that was only a yr old and no carbonation at all. Loved this so much!

I remember those styrofoam lables. I think that they used those into the 1990s. I remember my sisters peeling the labels off and putting them inside of the bottle in spiral strips.
In the mid seventies my local A & P grocery store installed bar code scanners, they were thick plastic scanners with a Starburst type opening and the light that activated as the code was read was bright orangey red. One of my friends moms worked at the store and she hated the bar cade readers because she often had to run something over the reader numerous times to get it to read the barcode. Those early readers did a very poor job on objects where the code wasn't flat. I had a friend in the late 70s whose company made and marketed bar code reading systems. Hope you stay healthy!

Thanks for this! 👷 Interesting to see that the Tonic Water contained quinine, which is something I first heard in a movie way back in the early 1980s. I remember asking my maternal grandmother (who was a registered nurse) what quinine was.
The problem I have experienced with old bottled soft drinks is that the cap liners were made of "cork". After about 5 years the cork taste has leeched into the flavor of the drink. This was quite a long time ago and no company probably uses cork anymore
Im as old as the oldest one of those club sodas. I am expecting to find my self on your display shelf soon. At least I will get to watch from the front row.
My dad an i had permission from the property owners because the home was gonna be torn down for an industrial park. It was an old farm house, we got a safe WITH 22 silver dollars inside (they couldn’t find the combo but we found it in a drawer. I also got 7 bottles of whiskey all still tax sealed from 1961. Also found an 8’ pot plant next to the barn. Needless to say, that was a good load of abandoned stuff.
club soda is mostly just mineral water for preparing alcoholic drinks. tonic water is sweet bc there's sugar in it and a bit bitter bc of the quinine. it's used in gin and tonic etc.
I honestly thought it was a bob the builder stream. Or is it because it was Halloween. Regardless great vid my good man. Most exited I felt about carbonation in a long time ❤
I like club soda and tonic water. When I used to leave Coca-cola in the fridge at work, people would steal it. I started bringing club soda or tonic water instead. People never stole it. ;-)
