    I came to Souls far after he was active in DS3, but from all the vids of him that I went back and saw he definitely had the most insightful perspective out of the known PvP tubers at the time. I also got into DBD recently and he's similarly a great source of info there, really glad to see that he'll be returning for Elden Ring.
    I wrote this at the beginning of the interview, I'll write my thoughts through the convo here.
    7:26 If I'm trying to win, I do this too, and I'll purposely through out attacks or condition them into thinking I space or play a specific way, so they base their playstyle against that instead of what I'm actually trying to do
    12:59 I've wanted to do a lot of videos like this, however since I script almost all my videos it takes way more time and motivation then scott likely needs. From what I've seen he has the skill to just turn on the mic and say all he wanted to say in 4 minutes just from his head. Doing duel analysis streams might be a good way I can develop that skill.
    24:30 That's genius, I'm suprised I've never encountered that in DS3 cuz me and amish have discussed the potential of coordinated gank combos or actions like that before, but never really talked about it publically cuz ganks are strong enough.
    41:38 I've def engaged in this before and it was def fun at points to get back at cheaters, especially with my ability to make my own cheats to basicaly guaranteed win the hacker wars. But what I found was that counter cheats as a whole were a pretty bad idea as having a "curse someone" button lead to a lot of players(including myself very early on) just using it on someone who ticked them off enough. So basically it just leads to more cheaters, and that's why I don't even run any sort of protections other then blue sentinel if I feel like it. I think especially content creators need to be careful with directing players possibly to things they could use maliciously, cuz some people will end up using them maliciously if they have it on their other monitor or on alt-tab. Honest merchant only being able to help u with making builds and getting items in firelink is a huge step over giving players cheat tables which may or may not contain things they can use malicously.
    57:55 Glad to hear him acknowledge past mistakes with drama with the reddit mods, def though they were out of touch but yeah I've similarly not been a fan of content creators today doing the twitter thing when they get banned from the ER reddit in a possibly unjust way. Creators are pretty careless with the fact that some of their followers might straight up harass the mods or worse, like not even with a qualifier being like "I don't want anyone to harass anyone to be clear, however with that said I think ppl should be aware of this".
    1:01:31 Think there needs to be a more nuanced convo on this, cuz sure yeah there is a lot of low effort post stuff but at the same time we get upset when the mods ban things for possibly ridiculous reasons such as "low effort/not in the spirt of the sub" so I think an ideal subreddit would handle these kinds of things with polls and such, at least making sure that the broad mod decisions are not out of sync with the community.

    Scott’s narrated thought duels are what got me into Souls PVP. They taught me so much and they’re still to this day some of my comfort content to revisit. This interview was a really cool listen, especially because I enjoyed your content too back in the DS3 days. Hope to see you return to ER’s PVP at some point! …Well, not now because the DLC stuff has made this the second most broken era of PVP since the first couple months of launch. But maybe after a few more patches! DS3 took a while to work itself out too.

    I remember my first time being invaded was a dude in ariamis back on ps3 when I was like 15. I can't believe I remembered this while you guys were talking about your experiences at the end. It was during the real life week it took me to clear the painted world. I had just opened up the big gate by the bonfire and got invader by this guy using the uchi. Except it wasn't the uchi it was also the iaito, and he would switch between them so I didn't know which heavy attack he would do. It stuck with me to this day that he used 2 similar looking weapons and would switch to try and confuse me.
    It inspired me to use some red eye orbs I had picked up and try invading out. I got this host who was spamming those lure things and kept maxing out how many people were in the world. Everyone was just hopping around those snowy hills before the bonfire and I would be plunging people with my dragon tooth laughing like a madman. Really stuck with me and always will.
    I did a bit of invading early ds3 at demon ruins with an uchi and un-upgraded carthus flame arc for a little while and had a lot of fun. Only made it to irithyll back then and came back near the end of 2020 to complete my first playthrough. I guess quarantine was peak amount of time pvping and doing invasions and stuff. It's been a really amazing ride but I finally uninstalled today. Gonna save my energy for elden ring 'cuz I was being drained by the increasing amount of queue time, cheaters and laggards I've been running into lately. Felt my love/hate relationship turning to just hate and decided I should probably play something else.
    Thinking of going back and trying out ds2 or ds1 pvp. Don't know how worth it it is but I'm curious to go back and try.

    Scott is right when he said that there’s very little depth or complexity to DS3 even when held up against For Honor which itself isn’t complex from a fighting game standpoint.
    I started playing Tekken 7 in 2017 and to be honest it made me realize how silly it was to take Souls pvp as seriously as I once did.
    The skill ceiling for most fighting games is so much higher than Souls pvp it isn’t even comparable really. It’s still incredibly fun and unique to play these games but once you branch out you quickly realize how shallow they are.

    • @TheKripox
      @TheKripox 3 роки тому +2

      Meh, I don't think that's particularily meaningful. Yes, the movesets of any character in even basic fighting games tend to dwarf what you do in dark souls pvp, but ultimately its not about maximum depth or highest skill ceiling so much as it is about sufficient depth and skill expression. Take chess. You can easily create a game that is way, way, WAY more complex and deep than chess, but it wouldn't change anything because chess is already impossible for humans to ever master. I wouldn't say DS3 is on the level of chess, but it is complex, deep and hard enough that there is a very clear divide between the very best players and the rest, and you could put in years and years into the game without ever really hitting the skill ceiling. If it feels too restrictive then by all means play something else, but that doesn't mean it is silly to be very invested in DS3.

    • @iamamish
      @iamamish  3 роки тому +1

      @@TheKripox quite right - yes Tekken and others are harder to master but the fact that I can play a top player and still consistently lose shows you that there are skills that matter, they take a long time to master, and they're stable over time.

      @@iamamish I guess my point is there is far less to execute in Souls games. There are no combo juggles, no move canceling (outside of estus which is a glitch) every attack is boiled down to two buttons, no block punishment, etc. You don’t see Souls players going around talking about how many frames are in an animation because it isn’t relevant or useful to know like it is in almost any fighting game. I hear people talk about how difficult it is to hard swap when execution like that is routine in any fighting game.
      I’m not saying that there’s no skill to be had in these games because there obviously is and I’ve played everyone of them since DS1 but it is unquestionably more shallow than just about any other competitive fighting game.

      @@iamamish i think you like the pvp more than the pve so that may be part of it. If you ever get the time Amish i would really suggest playing it into the later portions of the game, in particular my favorite is monster hunter world, once you get to high rank or the dlc iceborn you'll find a lot of the monsters will require really good reaction time and timing to fight along with a good to build that's up to par with the fight. Another thing a lot of players can get put off by is the weapons, try every single one, my favorite although it's a pretty hard one to use as efficiently as possible is the charge blade, it's mobile, high damage, can block, and overall just work well. But you might like something like the greatsword which is slower and less mobile but higher damage among other things. Or maybe you'd like the air focused and fast slashes of the insect glaive. Truthfully there's so many ways to use weapons, so if you ever pick it back up try out every weapon type (iirc theres 11) and even watch like "how to use insert weapon here properly" kind of videos if you think you're missing something but like the feel of the weapon. But hey maybe mhw just isnt your kind of game

    I think getting more people to try invading needs it to be more accessible e.g. wex dust, faster invasion finding, and also more rewarding for both sides. Though listening to Scott talk about how long an invasion can last, seems like the reward should be more important than faster invasions.

  • @2394Generic
    @2394Generic 3 роки тому +6

    The greatest thing to me about the Souls series PvP, particularly DS3, is how dynamic it is, particularly with invasions. You're put against another play or more, but with relatively loosely defined roles that can vary covenant to covenant. There are practically infinite ways to take on any situation, which allows you to do so much more than any other game in existence right now as far as I know, including actual PvP focused games like fighting games. If you're lacking in a certain skillset, there's still always a way to win if you use your head and get clever, and even past that, winning can mean different things to different players, aside from just defeating the host/invader/etc. The skill ceiling in Dark Souls is practically infinite because of this as well, because there are many different ways you can contribute to an invasion.
    Due to the sheer amount of variability and customization, if you feel you're too skilled, not skilled enough, or even just bored for any reason with the game, you can completely change your playstyle, your build, and what it means for you to have a great time with the game, and it's mostly just limited by your creativity. You can create your own fun. For example I got bored of the meta after a while in DS3, so I decided to do boss cosplay builds. Then as the meta started evolving and I learned more and found better players, I played more of the meta and got significantly better. After I got pretty decent and then bored with how I was going at the meta, I found a way to incorporate my new skills with my favorite playstyle of using my cosplay builds, and it opened new doors of ways to be more creative in them, and I had even more fun, and so on and so on. I even found players and streamers like Amir, Mak, etc. who I played with and got even better, and had even more fun with.
    I wouldn't write this 5 minute wall of text if DS PvP wasn't the most fun I've ever had with a video game, and for a reason. It's ultimately just something I play for fun on nights when I get home from work, but it's pretty damn cool for just a video game.

    1:07:52 There are many reasons I’m attached to the two-hit combo system, and I could go on and on. What you mentioned about Ultras being balanced around their massive 2-hit combos is an incredibly important point that doesn’t get mentioned often enough in talks of DS3’s balance. Ultras may not be top tier, but DS3 does balance them better than I think anyone thought possible despite the faster speed of combat and more spammable rolls. And that’s in huge part to the reward of landing that single hit which combos into a second.
    And on a more general note, longer hitstun allows for more creative and aggressive followups/pressure, and DS3 arguably does this best in the series. As someone who dislikes the passive outspacing and neutral play of most duels, anything that favors the aggressor is welcome and sorely needed, especially since higher levels of play center so heavily around neutral even with all of DS3’s hitstun.
    I often draw the comparison to Melee vs Brawl, the former favoring aggression and combos thanks to its hitstun, and the latter favoring passive neutral play thanks to its lack of stun. I think it’s clear which of the two ended up living the longer, more creative life for PvP.

    • @Felicificity
      @Felicificity 3 роки тому +1

      All that said, of course there’s lots we don’t know about ER and how it’ll balance things. I do think things will return to neutral more frequently, but that might be somewhat mitigated by shorter rolls. And there’s a lot we don’t know about the numbers either - maybe weapons will get bigger AR to compensate for the lack of combos, kinda like BB. I’m just hoping it won’t be a passive-fest

    Something no one is talking about is how invaders can now gank with bosses. As an invader I can just run to the dragon, if you kill the dragon I can run to the tree sentinel, if you kill the sentinel I can just keep running into large mob groups or even the npc invader. Its an open world so unless you go through a boss fog wall, I can force you to kill multiple bosses + hundreds of mobs, all the while having 10 free escapes which will also let me fully heal. Sure the host as a fantom or 2, I have the entire game on my side bosses and all. Invaders have a massive advantage over hosts now unless there is a seed of the tree of giants.

    • @iamamish
      @iamamish  3 роки тому

      Why does the host have to follow the red to these bosses? Yeah you can invade while the host is fighting these open world bosses, but that's it. The host is free to run away from the boss, but if they continue fighting it'll be the last one. Hosts won't be dumb enough to just chase you into boss aggro range. Anyone who invades knows the overwhelming majority of the time, hosts don't do things like that.

    I think the talk about hardswapping in ER was very interesting, I know ppl are going to have multiples of the same weapons with different arts but I've also heard that a single Ash can only be applied to one weapon at a time. The CNT definitely had a handful with 2 copies to be found, or copies it you chose a class that didnt have it, but I think it will be limited to one for many of them. I think having stacks like Gundyrs, for very useful weapon skills similar to DS3 is largely going to be dependent on whether Ashes can be muled on consoles. If they cant, the PvP scene for console vs PC could be extremely different, because to get that many console players would have to complete ng cycle upon cycle, and this looks like Froms longest game by a country mile. Whereas tools will be developed in no time for PC players to get copies of anything they want on demand.

    Hello Amish 👋 nice video & thanks for the kind words you had to say about me.
    I wish Scott stayed playing at the very least a little longer back then, I think as the meta changed and play style/players improved and figured new things out he would of enjoyed the game a lot again.
    looking forward to coming back when Elden Ring comes out I love everything (mostly) about it so far and the pvp seems like it’s gonna be better then DS3 I like how there’s no more 2 hit combos after the first hit you already gotta get into mind games and reading your opponents, no more 2 guarantee hits from a dark infused SS for half your health, which makes super passive play less viable that in my opinion is good and more fun.
    Also a lot of weapon arts and magic seems really good from what we seen and seems like the perfect thing to add to a melee build to use against overly passive players or just for constant
    pressure, and lastly the fact that you can put any WA on any weapon is really awesome and cool to me, knowing I can switch my swords WA to many different ones open up so many possibilities.

      Of course, I'm looking forward to seeing what everyone comes up with. I'm especially interested to see how the absence of two-hit stun changes the game

    This guy is very opinionated on stuff that's objectively wrong. The "FromSoft doesn't care about PvP" phrase, for example, is pretty common but the patch history proves otherwise.

    • @iamamish
      @iamamish  3 роки тому +1

      I think they care more about PVE but I also think PVP has more opportunities and needs for patching, so the patches end up being very pvp-focused, while I still think it is true that From cares more about the PVE experience.

    • @ZeroTheHeroGOAT
      @ZeroTheHeroGOAT 3 роки тому

      @@iamamish Well, as you said, you *think* they care more about the PvE aspect when in reality there are proof on the table that suggests they at least equally prioritize PvP. So that's where we're at. Facts over feelings, please.

    • @iamamish
      @iamamish  3 роки тому +1

      @@ZeroTheHeroGOAT I think you missed the point I was making. Let's say they care about PVE more than PVP, but 99% of the defects that come out after release are in the PVP.
      Well then the majority of the patches will be pvp-focused, but that's because that's where the defects are, not necessarily because they care about it more.
      I think From cares very much about the PVP, but they prioritize PVE (as they should).

    • @ZeroTheHeroGOAT
      @ZeroTheHeroGOAT 3 роки тому

      @@iamamish The majority of PvP balance is made after release because that's when people get creative with what's in the game. The PvE is generally easier to balance in-house.
      I didn't miss your point, I just categorically disagree with the statement that they care more about one thing or the other as all current evidence points towards that they care about the entire product (both PvE and PvP. By "evidence" I mean interviews with Miyazaki and patch notes.

      @@ZeroTheHeroGOAT but you’re shifting the conversation from which they care MORE about to whether or not they care about both.
      Of course they care about both but “care” isn’t binary, it is relevant in degree. Since the PVE represents where most players spend most of their time, that’s what they care about most.
