Jamie, another spot on review. I started following you from the beginning, you were really good right out of the gate, but you’re continued improvement amazes me. The sheer number of reviews you’ve been putting out is amazing considering the quality. I hope you have time to enjoy doing your own woodwork. Share some of your projects, I am sure others would appreciate seeing them. Thanks again.
Thank you, Ronald! I appreciate you!! I have not had much time to woodwork but I am hoping to start incorporating builds into the channel. A lot of these reviews just kept falling in my lap, I'd have one plane and someone would let me borrow their for the video. And I needed to keep up the momentum because the channel grew a lot faster than I ever anticipated lol Thank you again for your support! Builds comming soon :D (I hope lol)
It is a Vintage Brass Nesting Screw driver like this one: www.ebay.com/itm/225983311802?mkcid=16&mkevt=1&mkrid=711-127632-2357-0&ssspo=XRtHZiS1SFW&sssrc=4429486&ssuid=znIgINciSe-&var=&widget_ver=artemis&media=COPY
It can be used cross grain, you just need to make sure you score both sides of the cut. And you may like to keep scoring as you cut depending on the wood and how prone to splintering it is. Idk that I would necessarily reccomend this plane for cutting rabbits. They would have to be small rabbits or multiple passes. You also run into the issue of reference area for the fence depending on how thick the stock is once you start cutting the rabbit. It will tend to teeter on the skate of there isn't alot of reference for the fence. It deff can be done just not as easy as you can with a skew block. I hope this helps!
Would love to see a video where you line up your different planes and go over what each of them are designed to do and which jobs they excel at. What’s this one for, making groves in the bottom of drawers and boxes to hold the bottoms?
I love this idea! I'll write it down! This one can be used for drawer bottoms (mainly that) or to just make other groves. As well as beads if you get the beading irons for it. I have two beading planes so maybe I'll get those irons and sell one lol
Thanks for the review. Thanks for the tip about Veritas irons working in the Record 043. I have a complete Record, but only one iron. It's not a very comfortable plow plane to use, but it is easier to set up and use than a 45. That being said- it is a fun plane.
Great Review Jamie. I'm glad to hear the Veritas irons fit the Record. I have the Record, but a bit rougher than the one in your video. It looked like the replacement irons in your Record 043 were not the same as the Veritas. Can you let us know where you obtained replacement irons from? I have the Veritas version coming in the next day. Thank you for posting! Great job as always.
Good review, but I think you are missing some points in your comparison. 1) the Record comes with long and short rods standard, so all that fussing about where to park the rods is moot. 95% of my work is with the short rods. AFAIK, the Veritas plane only has one set of rods. ( 043 rods are easy to make out of old Irwin spade bit shafts) 2) the threads on the record rod screws are 10-24 threading, so for a buck you can get 2 thumbscrews from any US hardware store and you won’t need a tool to adjust them. If you want to adjust with an Allen key, you can do that also. Just buy Allen grub screws 3) the standard irons for an 043 are tungsten steel, not O1, and mine are stamped as such. They seem roughly equivalent to A2 steel, or at least have better wear resistance. I’m pretty sure they are still available. 4) it took an hour of filing, but a while ago I filed the record skate with a taper like the Veritas now has so I could use it as a beading plane. I consider it a good upgrade. Your plane looks OK, but mine had a pretty rough skate, which is why I went at it with a file in the first place. The narrower skate does run smoother. The cast iron skate is pretty easy to file. File the left side of the skate only. 5) I use old Stanley #50 cutters in my 043 up to 5/8” in width. It doesn’t look like the Veritas will do that with the screw by the side of the iron installed. Record originally offered cutters to 12 mm. Commonly available 1/8” thick O1 will fit in the Record if you want to make your own cutters. Don’t know about the Veritas.
Thank you for the feedback! 1. I never saw one with 2 sets of rods, long and short. I've seen that for like the 45 but not the 43 :/ 2. Great point 3. The iron I showed in the video were replacement O1 irons, not the origional irons. You may have missed me talking about that but it's ok :) 4. Great advice on filing the state to accept beading irons and have less resistance. 5. You are correct this can only handle up to 3/8 or 10mm I deff appreciate your time on this! Great info for ppl to know! Right now I'm keeping both, I want to see if I keep using it for the same purpose and have one dedicated to that set up. Like a box bottom. Keep one set up that way so I can grab and go not set up and go lol
You aren't kidding on the UK shipping! I bought a nice 43 last year and with shipping I wasn't much under the Veritas price. But..I also enjoyed making my own wooden fence out of a nice piece of scrap beech. One of my favorite "one trick pony" tools for sure.
I know the Veritas works with cutters/irons from 4 to 10 mm (and comes with a 6 mm iron). Or 1/8 to 3/8 for those stuck in the past. Do the old Record 43s take the full range of Veritas cutters?
No, the old record only had about 3 sizes, at least, that's what I've seen. But I don't know what sizes they are. Guessing 3/8, 1/4, and 5/8?? This is a great point I should have talked about the avail irons and how Veritas added more sizes 🤔
I like my Veritas. Just recently received it. The one thing I will change if possible is the screws for the fence adjustment. Would much rather have the finger tip adjustment rather than another per hex tool.
Rods can slide left to right can be a good thing from time to time. They give you better, not best, clearance on both sides. I am not sure what the tread is for the slot head screws. If it is still a commonly used thread today, get 1 pair of longer thumbscrews, then you can use it tool free. I am pretty sure Veritas use modern thread on those socket head screws. You can get definitely get thumbscrews to fix rod position.
I thunk we have a buddy working on thay, idk how it would look tho with these tall thumb screws but deff work a shot cus it would be a heck of alot easier lol
Great video. I think Veritas got this one right. I agree with your assessments on the things that could be better on the Veritas, but all in all it really is an upgrade over the vintage. And it so cute. There I said it. It’s just cute! ;)
Now, this is interesting. In the UK, buying a new Lie Nielsen or Veritas tool is a lot more expensive than you pay over there. Example: this Veritas plane your side is US$160 or CA$189: here it's £160 (= US$195 or CAN$268) We may pay less for vintage tools because they are mostly over here... but I still think you have the better deal!
That is very valid!! I hear alot thay 043s are easier to get over there and not super expensive at all! Here they are super close to the price of the veritas. If I was in the UK it's be a 043 all day lol
He is a Fandom version of Batman (in a trench coat). Based off a real person names Eliott Ness. That's all I remember tho, been a while since I use to read and follow everything Batman lol
The brass screw on the Veritas looks like they borrowed the idea from the Stanley 13-030, which is a very nice plane in the same class if you can look past the ugly plastic tote.
I wonder if an adjuster from the small plough plane would get in the way of your hand? If that could be added and still comfortable it would solve the missing feature. While I am arm chair quarterbacking the tool less knobs to lock the fence from the small plough would be nice too. 🤓
Hm... that is possible but they could have made it a tad bigger to allow room for the improvements lol I haven't been able to try the small plow yet but soon! My buddy is letting me borrow it :D
Well you know, back in the day we used those things to cut the grooves for draw bottom's or clean up a tongue and groove but its so much quicker and more accurate to use a slotting head or table saw. I inherited my Grandfather's Stanley 45 and i soon figured out why he never used it. Tried it out a couple of times and it was a useless pig of a thing. I sold it to a collector.

Great stuff, man. Thanks for making this and everything else you do!
Thank you!!!!
Out of curiosity, what screw driver are you using at 3:25 ? I've been looking for one like that, but no such luck.
It is a Vintage Brass Nesting Screw driver like this one: www.ebay.com/itm/225983311802?mkcid=16&mkevt=1&mkrid=711-127632-2357-0&ssspo=XRtHZiS1SFW&sssrc=4429486&ssuid=znIgINciSe-&var=&widget_ver=artemis&media=COPY
How is it on cross grain?
Would the skew rabbet plane do the same thing?
I know it’s 2x the price, but it has a knife and well is skewed.
It can be used cross grain, you just need to make sure you score both sides of the cut. And you may like to keep scoring as you cut depending on the wood and how prone to splintering it is.

No problem! And I one hundred percent agree, I love these planes!
The best thing about Veritas it that they almost always make left-handed versions. Looks like they did here.
YES! and yes they did! great point! thank you!

Thank you!! I got those irons from Mike in our Can I Have It Facebook group. Ill DM you his name!
Now you’re nitpicking, Allen wrench or screwdriver. They both use a tool to remove fence
Lol we have to nitpick in reviews 😅
Saw this in the most recent catalog and was instantly drawn to it. Great review.
Awesome! Thank you!

So you need a seperate tool to use the Veritas (wrench) but don't on the Record (thumbscrews)....
Flat head for the record, technically lol
@@BatCaveCreations You don't need to use the flatheads to adjust it, only assemble.
I almost jumped on this one but then I remembered I have the Luban version with the kerfing saw attachment.
Ah lucky! Lol I need a kerning saw ones in the works but not for this plane lol
I like my Veritas. Just recently received it. The one thing I will change if possible is the screws for the fence adjustment. Would much rather have the finger tip adjustment rather than another per hex tool.
100% agree there lol
Is that a plane for purchase on their site???!
Yes it is! Search box maker plow plane. I think it displayed on the home page too!

That's a great idea. I have a wingnut style 043 and don't like the idea of needing more adjustment tools.

All my records were 45s and 33 1/3 by the way Robin said Alfred wants to know when to serve dinner😂
There I go, watching plane videos again...BAD SCOTT!
Hahaha no!!! GOOD SCOTT GOOD!!!!! Lol
The body of the veritas looks like the old Eliott ness batcycle for real
Yes!!!!!!
Are you familiar with ness?
He is a Fandom version of Batman (in a trench coat). Based off a real person names Eliott Ness. That's all I remember tho, been a while since I use to read and follow everything Batman lol
I got my Record for £53.11 boxed with all three cutters.
Nice find!!!!
The brass screw on the Veritas looks like they borrowed the idea from the Stanley 13-030, which is a very nice plane in the same class if you can look past the ugly plastic tote.
They do look similar now that you mention it lol
I wonder if an adjuster from the small plough plane would get in the way of your hand? If that could be added and still comfortable it would solve the missing feature. While I am arm chair quarterbacking the tool less knobs to lock the fence from the small plough would be nice too. 🤓

“For the Record …” 😂
Haha love it!
Jamie….. be kind to wood shavings Dude………they make great little burnishers…..😢
Hahah fair! My bad :D
