Finely a demo for compo plane been waiting for a time, looks we all have same issues trying to solve it 😔 . And know it's not a 55 😅 good to know the real truth man 😂. Again thanks for sharing your videos Jamie .😊
Just letting you know that I appreciate your videos. I am just getting into hand tool wood working so find myself on your channel frequently. Also appreciate your love for Veritas. I was going to get Lie Nielsen's but I am in Canada and have a Lee Valley 15 in away so made no sense to pay $$$ for US exchange, duty and shipping. Also parts close by too.
Thank you! I appreciate that! And ya with LV thay close I deff recomend going thay route. Aim for the custom line if you can I wasn't a big fan of the standard line. If you do go with standard Open the mouth more than you would think you need to. That they work a lot better.
Based on this comment and your previous video I will certainly go with the custom line when the time comes. I bought a low angle jack on their seconds event last Fall and got to use it for the first time yesterday! Lots to learn still but it was really nice to hold and work with.
@Kevin G Sorry I thought you were talking about bevel down planes.I loved bevel up planes and highly recommend them! You honestly can get all bevel up and be fine. For higher angles like when you're working difficult grain they just take more effort to push. But if you are just starting out just focus on bevel up as you get more advanced you'll see what I mean.
Thank you! I will likely have a mix of both bevel up and bevel down eventually, but needed to start somewhere so started with the low angle Jack as it seems to be quite versatile. The advantage of other LV bevel ups (depending on models) would be to have different angled blades that could be used in all the planes. I like versatility!
@Kevin G 100% agree! I started with the BU Jack also (unless you count the Kobalt no 4 from lowes, I'm pretty sure I threw against the wall hahahah) From there I got the BU Smoother and then ventured into bevel down when I gave myself the time to learn them
The Lie-Nielson honing guide can do it but you need to get both left and right jaws for it for the angle on your spearpoint. Basically you can get it with 30 or 18 degrees. I've opted for the Swanson marking knife that uses disposable blades like an old school razor. Enough blades to last you a lifetime will cost about twelve bucks.
If you want to wax the fence just once to help with friction and don't want it to gunk up then put a coat of wax on the desired surface, place a paper towel over it, then warm iron it and wipe away any residue. This melts the wax into the timber forever.
Hand cut grooves are more beautiful when cut with a combination plane because each one is unique. Routers and table saws give factory like perfection. To avoid tear out with grooves use a marking knife to score both sides of groove, essential for hard to work Aussie timbers.
I agree with you there! Deff makes the project special!! Love the marking knife trick! I use that alot because I can be over cautious to avoid tare out hahaha
Good video. I am totally in the camp of, if I have 1 dado to cut I am using my plow plane, just because it is a bit faster than getting out the dado stack on the saw. Plus I like using the plane. The only thing I do not like about it is, that it is really hard to use on smaller parts. e.g.if I am making a box, it is much better for me cut the dado or the rabbet for the box bottom , depending on the design, then cut the sides, meaning it is easier to cut 1 groove on a 2 ft board than cutting 4 grooves on 6 inch boards. It is doable but just harder. It seems like every week I go to the lee valley site and think their box makers plane looks so awesome, but then I go and use my Stanley 50 or my Stanley 45 or my veritas small plow plane, and realize that I do not need another plow plane.
Lol as I was reading this I was like, ya he needs the box makers then I saw the end haha you are correct if you have those you don't need the box makers but it is alot smaller and easier to use on small parts. So with your self uo it would be a luxury tool and not a need. Ask for it for Christmas or your B-Day hahhaha
Bowling Alley Wax by BWC Company is way better than Johnson's. I'm not sponsored, but that stuff changed my life. I was hooked on Johnson's until someone clued me in on Bowling Alley Wax. Worth its own episode.
I may still have an empty can, I hope. Dry lube is another option on metal parts. It is more wearing resistance, and it's dry so it doesn't attract dust.
@@BatCaveCreations They are about £200 in the UK for a decent plane with all parts. Extra skids - runners - along with extra cutters are available but pricey. Well worth getting one though. Take care.
Jamie, the bevels on the spurs should face in towards the blade not out. Thanks again for the sharpening tip.
Ahhaha you are 100% correct! Thank you!
Every time I take em out, I have to consciously think about that. Bevel out just looks more correct.
Right!!!! Lol I didn't even thunk about it but as soon as you said it I looked and YUP I have them backwards. 😅 lol imma pin your comment so ppl know!

GENIUS! Thank you! I am going to do that, great idea!
Beautiful idea. I am gonna do just the same. Thanks
Great video 👍

That is awesome thank you! I'll check them out!
Good video
I have found that if I offset the rods I can get the skate and fence on without binding. Once they are both on I readjust the rods as needed.
love it! imma try that!! thank you!
Another great vdeo
Thank you!!!!

Thank you! Imma have to try that!
Also, applicable for the Record 405. The Record 405 is superior to all other combination planes.
I have to try one of those one day because i've been hearing the same thing!

Man, this Veritas shill sure knows his stuff.
Yes! Lol
