In a world where so many people give away "fake free" (that which has no actual value despite the appearance to the contrary) I love it when I find someone who practices what they preach and who actually shares value. I sent an email to Damian recently expecting to get back, "Hi, my names X, and I work for Damian Keyes," so when I got a reply from Damian himself I was suitably impressed. But, it was the fact that he went out of his way to help when he had no idea who I was (and when it was actually costing him money) that was most impressive. When this bloke talks about personal engagement, he walks-the-walk and it's fair to say that he has created a true fan here. Thanks Damian. You're a legend mate.
“You’re musicians, you’re extroverts” I’m an introvert. I have to be an extrovert for the few hours I’m performing or mingling with people, but it takes so much energy out of me. I honestly thought most musicians were introverts too which is why we become musicians in the first place. In my mind, an extrovert will not be able to sit still in a room on their own for hours practicing their instrument or writing songs. Being an introvert allows us to spend lots of time honing our craft.
I feel exactly the same, performing sucks up a lot of energy. I have no problem practicing the same song over and over again all day long to play it to the best of my ability.

Jimmy VanZeno Absolutely! Don’t get me wrong. There’s nothing I love more than being on stage and singing my heart out, but it does get exhausting sometimes. The good kind of exhausting.
I feel you, but I think he meant something along the lines of “you love sharing your music.” I agree this isn’t the same as extroversion. I’m extremely introverted, but I feel like it’s natural to share my art with others, and when performing for an audience I (ideally at least) give it my all.
The one negative for a lot of independent artists doing this is if you only have a handful of fans, and you look after them so well they become close friends, they then expect to no longer be consumers of any of your products. Even skipping out on shows since they’ll just “catch you at the next one”. Starting conversations and engaging *is* important, but never make the mistake of dissolving the fan barrier completely unless you don’t mind running the risk of losing fans for friends who support you less because they know you on a personal level.

Thanks for that really helpful video, Damian. At 69, I’m starting out with a composing and songwriting career. I was looking to see how I could grow my fan base and I was really pleased to find this. I’ll work on it. I’m a singer, piano player and songwriter and a mum, grandma, wife and housewife. Phew! I needed your direction.
"You're musicians, you're extroverts"..... I had to roll my eyes a little bit at that one haha, but seriously man, you make fantastic videos, really appreciate your work!
Hi Damian, thank you so much for this video. It really has been an answer to prayer. My mission with my music is to create songs that bring hope and start conversations about the big questions of life. However, in the process of releasing my first album, I've gotten so caught up in chasing after numbers (streams, views, likes, etc) as a measure of "success" rather than the individual relationships I have with people. Thanks for so many ideas on how to connect with people in a personal way, 1-1. I feel like I can now share my music in a way that is genuine and reflects my values as an artist and a follower of Jesus. I feel like we live in a culture that cares more about quantity over quality that we forget that often 1-1 interaction with people is often the most valuable way to make an impact and build up our community. Thanks for sharing this refreshing content. I'm now really excited to share my music in 2021!
Really enjoying your videos! I've been hiding away from the power of social media for years, working hard on the music and releasing to nobody! I'm in the studio recording an album of songs I'm really proud of, with a fantastic producer and a great band.....this time its going to work! I'm taking up this challenge wish me luck!
I’m thinking about giving away a bass and amp after I record a project with it. Do a whole making of video and then right before I put the project out promote the bass give away through the making of video... I really want to focus on adding real value to at least one person local to me. It’s just about how to chose the winner. Great video Damo! Brilliant as always!
I have a big problem with communication. I'm naturally an introverted and passive person, all I can do is the artistic part, the nice music, the lyrics. But of all the things I'm terrible at being active, promoting and managing all this. I am only at the beginning of my journey, and so I haven't been on any proper gig and I'm sometimes very anxious to even busk. But your videos are very helpful as they allow me to finally know how to promote myself properly at least on the internet and so I wanted to thank you for that. :))
I'm not a musician but I'm starting a UA-cam channel and these tips are amazing. Not only did I like the video and subscribe, I saved this video to my watch later list so I could watch it again and pay more attention.
Hello Damian, Alex here... (singer in the London based rock duo LEONTAS) loving this video to a point where I’ll probably watch it on repeat. I only discovered your channel few days ago. But honestly.... THANK YOU!!!
Short story of my biggest struggle: I am producing music and want to be a DJ, made a course for 1.5k and now i am to shy for live gigs, end of the story
// CR3CS constancy is the key! I’ve been singing for 18 years (since I was 3 years old) and now, after many concerts, my music will be streamed and live at events here in Peru. Chase that dream, the dream is not going after you. - @daloozar
Fellow shy person here.. and you're not alone man. We just gotta take that leap of faith, follow our hearts, and accept that we are not perfect! Let the failures happen.. let the awkwardness out there.. let us be ourselves! Cus who else is gonna do that for you other than yourself? You got this bro
@@CR3CS who is ever ready? how do we be ready? sure, we can always prepare, but are we truly definitely ready? my point is, don't try, but do. Good luck, good stranger.
A lot of the time we are shy because we afraid of failing publicly. Just keep diving into that ice cold water. You got this!! It’s been a year since you posted this. Has anything changed?
Some mentors charge houdreds of dollars for accessing these things you said here Damian. This explains how much gold value you are and how much you really want to help people to reach a goal. Thank you for your amazing work!
What I love about this video is that your bringing value to us helping us Artists understand what a TRUE fan really wants rather than describing how to increase your numbers with followers or fans that will never pay a single penny towards your music. Great video, thank you!
This is awesome content. I watched 3 videos and go a lot out of them. I am going to create the calendar and start applying it as best I can. Thank you Damien
You’re brilliant, fun, and so personable! I’ve listened to the whole video taking notes, but I’ve got a huge hurdle in all these awesome extroverted suggestions… (yes I actually guffawed at the comment that all musicians are extroverted😅) I’m deeply introverted with loads of anxiety (especially for social interactions), and awful insecurities, I’d love some advice!! Also, as much as I try to get to know others and show genuine interest in them and their interests, almost no one has ever shown interest in me or my music. Not even my folks. So disheartening!
My son Sam told me about you plus had me watch your channel *_with him_* which was great for my learning. I'm an older guy who is starting late in life to produce music and to make it public. The info that you shared has given me a jump-start on how to be more effective in accomplishing my goals.
Damian, thank you for making & sharing this video. The content is filled with tools to implement immediately-priceless-thank you again for taking the time! Ps. To anyone who’s biggest struggle at the moment is with unique content; I’d be interested in collaborating at the earliest convenience to all. I myself have been creating & developing ‘unique style’ content for artists & bands combining my influences with theirs & & achieving the outcomes in hard rock, pop, Pop country, rap & (some jazz). Just turned 38 old-Drums (36yrs- ) , guitar, bass 21 yrs. keys (7 yrs.) songwriting, collaborating, recording, performing & producing are my oxygen. We may be able to help each other-So many projects have fallen short due to others’ “commitments”. To each their own. HUNGRY artist & bands are the lungs for that oxygen to me. I’m literally in between extreme major label sign on & my home town....complete east & complete west..I know! And Damien, your videos to me have been a Tony Robbins style approach (not a joke-my preferred style) in the music ‘business’ . Thank you for the value, thank you for the insights & assisted breakthroughs & thank you for the coaching to immediately apply! I love forward to seeing you all on the journey if our paths meet! Very sincerely, Chris Harding

My struggle is finding an audience for the kind of music I do. Most of the people around me don't care about my music, and that's fine, but how do I go about finding people that do?
Search hashtags for your genre on social media and try to start genuine conversations in the comments. Don't even promote your music, just have a good talk. If they end up following, they will see what you are all about. What kind of music do you make by the way?

Be thankful you're NOT in the music industry...it's absolutely horrible !! I've been a musician for 35 years...it's never been more atrocious than right now.
Biggest struggle: Finding places to play my EP and not just acoustic sets in coffee shops or restaurants. I do ambient pop and it's hard to find an environment for that in Birmingham, Alabama being a new artist. So I guess, what are some creative places to gig or get my music out there live without the big venues that I can't play at yet?
Yeah I agree, I'm more into electronic music so maybe it's not exactly the same, but it would be really helpfull to get some advice on just how to approach local bar/club-owners. I think a lot of people find it hard to know in which end to start when it comes to playing live - so yeah we need a Damo video on the topic XD
@@whistlerscousin467 Yeah I've thought about that but I do weekly videos and they usually get under 100 views as is and wanted to work more or in person connections to get connected with musicians locally; but maybe I should give it a shot for a while and see what happens🤷♀️ thanks for the tip!
@McKenna Gray, start more relationships, in person if you want. Use their contact info to invite them to live shows. You could also make a UA-cam ad with you doing your thing and run it on channels that play ambient music. Try, test, refine, repeat.
Hey Hey Damian, I just finished watching this video. Its great! It's really well put together, clear and concise and the 'tongue-in-cheek' humour didn't go unappreciated either! Regarding your advice about 'photoshoots' can I ask you to clarify how you'd define a photoshoot!? Especially at the moment when we going through lockdown. I guess my point is that its difficult to come up with new interesting content at the moment. Thanks for the video...its this kind of information and guidance that artists really really need!
Damian, man you are a blessing to upcoming Musicians! A lot of UA-camrs recycle same content because they have to put out content, most of which is utter garbage. I discovered you recently and Im so grateful for the same. Your content actually makes sense. Plus it has a step by step guide. Who can expect any more from you! You are amazing!
When you started describing the fans at the beginning, I was like 'YASSS, that's what I need!' MY STRUGGLE is to find similar-genre bands in Manchester so I can get support gigs and expand my network. I feel like they all play typical Brit Indie Pop and I am too European and ambient (working on my rock side too) for them :(
I follow a couple bands in my area on facebook that score support gigs for nationally touring acts (is that what you mean by support gig?). Been really studying what they do and where they book when not doing support and trying to replicate. Seeing There's like 6 venues in Seattle you should be playing before you get to the next level. Getting someone to give you an opportunity at a big venue is huge. I feel you. Best of Luck!
Could you put on your own gig? Or look for smaller venues where you could headline? :) Keep looking as well, they might be harder to find but there will be some bands that are more similar to you 💪🏼
@@JediKnightmare thank you so much for all the advice everyone! I think what I need at the moment is a plan haha David, thank you for asking, you can find me on Spotify, Instagram and everywhere really under 'Ada Louder'. DM me on Insta! Xx

I've only landed (2) small festivals so far, could use advice too! I keep a spreadsheet of all the festivals in my area (about 50), where the performer application link is (usually online), when the application deadline is (they vary widely), and then make sure my EPK and socials are up to date since I know they're about to get seriously reviewed. I also make sure i have youtube of me playing live so they know what they're in for. At some point I think I'll start breaking through because I think I'm doing everything right but just don't have the resume yet.
@@DamianKeyes Would love to hear this too, I heard most festivals have their lineups confirmed by Nov/Dec already if their festival is the next summer.

Hey Damian! Love your content! So one thing that I feel like me and my band struggle with is that we don’t really have a defined style when it comes to how we look and present ourselves visually. I’d love it if you would share your two cents on this topic of visuals and fashion. Cheers from Vancouver, Canada!
Damo, your voice literally calms my panic attacks... that's how used to you I've gotten. Just found this gem again and it's at the perfect time since I just released my third single. Thank you for everything that you do!

my biggest struggle with my band has got to be trying to get my bandmates active and involved, its usually like pulling teeth trying to get them to do anything
I've consumed the whole internet and left one comment in the past😃 . ... this is the most accurate thing you'll listen to. Trust me I'm a fan and not a musician. I share music constantly with my friends and even consume music documentaries. Fans are willing to build your legacy if given the chance but they don't want money or discounts for helping out .... they want to feel needed, special, and a part of a cause. Your videos are great at helping me understand music marketing! I am starting to use the information you give me, but the road seems long and hard! (anyone else just getting started?) Thank you for the content you build!
Actually, I think it's still a good idea. If you've got 3 people in the band, one of you could livestream it. When people know they're being recorded, it generally changes their behavior. Even if you're not comfortable with that, then maybe you go to deliver the merch with one of your band members who's streaming it, and have the other watching so that if anything bad goes down, you'd have someone who could send for help. Maybe that's a little paranoid, but I understand being cautious. Also, you don't have to do this with guys at all, if you want. You get to choose who you'd like to deliver march to, or go to breakfast with; the people you choose could all be women.

Such good ideas! Thanks for this
Thanks for that really helpful video, Damian. At 69, I’m starting out with a composing and songwriting career. I was looking to see how I could grow my fan base and I was really pleased to find this. I’ll work on it. I’m a singer, piano player and songwriter and a mum, grandma, wife and housewife. Phew! I needed your direction.
That’s awesome! I wish you good luck on your journey!!
This is the most value I’ve gotten from a video like this in a very long time. Subscribed!
Love this. Music fans are the best people in the world, so why wouldn't you want to treat them like royalty?
Very very true! Couldn’t agree more 😊😊😊
"You're musicians, you're extroverts"..... I had to roll my eyes a little bit at that one haha, but seriously man, you make fantastic videos, really appreciate your work!
Nope, huge introvert here. Lol. Music is one of the only things that gets my thoughts across to a larger group of people.
Thanks Damian! I don't know how many times I should thank you!
Again, Thanks! Keep making these kind of videos!🤗
Ahhh this is so lovely, thank you to you for watching them! I’ll keep making them 😊
Really enjoying your videos! I've been hiding away from the power of social media for years, working hard on the music and releasing to nobody! I'm in the studio recording an album of songs I'm really proud of, with a fantastic producer and a great band.....this time its going to work! I'm taking up this challenge wish me luck!
did it work?
@@ferismuller22 totally agree, but a huge step for me to do.. maybe i am not ready yet
This is the best vídeo of yours that I"ve watched until today. Congratulations!
I watched this drunk on a xmas eve, but Im pretty sure I will have to rewatch it sober and write it all down
took notes til my hand hurt. much love. thank you for this. SUBSCRIBED ✅😁
I’ve listened to the whole video taking notes, but I’ve got a huge hurdle in all these awesome extroverted suggestions… (yes I actually guffawed at the comment that all musicians are extroverted😅)
I’m deeply introverted with loads of anxiety (especially for social interactions), and awful insecurities, I’d love some advice!! Also, as much as I try to get to know others and show genuine interest in them and their interests, almost no one has ever shown interest in me or my music. Not even my folks. So disheartening!
I really like the defibrillator analogy. Great video
I do have a little bit of fans on my artist pages but I've not been too great at keep the excitement for releases going. Thank you for this video.
This is one of the most inspiring videos I've ever watched! So many actionable ideas here. Thank you so much. 😁
My son Sam told me about you plus had me watch your channel *_with him_* which was great for my learning. I'm an older guy who is starting late in life to produce music and to make it public. The info that you shared has given me a jump-start on how to be more effective in accomplishing my goals.
Biggest struggle: thinking of unique content
Thanks dude, that gives me some ideas. Let me have a think on how I can make some content for this.. I have a few ideas 🙂🙂🙂
Very sincerely,
Chris Harding
Damian Keyes please talk about reverse-engineering the creation of content with the purpose of making it as potentially viral as possible.
Yeah and then posting regularly on top of it
Which social media channels do you mainly focus on?
your the goat iv just come out last month & these videos helps me not waste anytime in my career
3:55 - "You're musicians, you're extraverts" I always assumed most artists were introverts. I'm certainly no extravert, lol.
Yeah, a lot of artists are introverts. Me included.
lmao i pretend to be a extrovert cause it’s more fun i feel dat
Yeah I felt doomed after he said that
@@mariaaleksandrova1266 Everyone has potential to go both ways. Don't feel like you're static, stuck like a rock. We are very dynamic beings that change day to day, moment to moment. Believe in yourself! Even if you don't right now, know that I believe in you. :)
Zayn is an introvert though
Thank-you for the tip about the comments! I just had a really cool chat with a new viewer and they subscribed and are checking out my other songs. It's so obvious but I didn't think of it, so thank-you so much Damian! Great advice as always 👌
@@actualchrisreid I'd say pop? With elements of electronica.
Let me be your fan bro 🙌🏿🙌🏿🙌🏿🙌🏿
I have the same problem!
Jason Qiu I sub’d to your channel to support you and your music. 😉
Daniel thank you so much! That's the real thing! Got lots of good ideas for growing my fan base! Happy new 2021 !
This biggest struggle I've been having is getting my work seen.
do you have your branding sorted and a marketing plan? :)
@@effisummerscreative Of course, I'm doing my own thing at least and working very hard to promote, and make music videos/content. Just always feels like there's more I could be doing.
@@BrandonShere Ah gotcha. I think it'll always feel like that to a certain extent. Patience is key I guess, consistency and patience 👌🏼

Brandon Shere yesss that’s the ideal way to go imo 😁 good luck!

I'm not even in the music industry but I watched this whole video because the advice is so good 👌
Be thankful you're NOT in the music industry...it's absolutely horrible !! I've been a musician for 35 years...it's never been more atrocious than right now.
I feel like I can't take note fast enough! Really good video! I have been looking for this for ever! thanks!!
Damian make sure to setup a donate page, so once I start monetizing what I love thanks to your advice, I can buy you a beer or ten
Damian Keyes, you have no idea how helpful you are to my career. Eye will definitely be joining your group soon. Thank you bro.
Awesome! Be amazing to have you bro! 🤟😊
McKenna Gray, what about live video shows via UA-cam, Facebook or wherever you’ve established relationships?
@@brunonote2263 Right! Just checked out ur music btw and "someone" is really cool!
@McKenna Gray, start more relationships, in person if you want. Use their contact info to invite them to live shows. You could also make a UA-cam ad with you doing your thing and run it on channels that play ambient music. Try, test, refine, repeat.
Very good points! I love the visuals you demonstrate on the wall. Well earned subscription!
Love this! Very great visual way by placing this out on post-its, on the wall.
OMG it's like Damain gave me a slap in the face with this video, its time to make changes. Thanks alot
When you started describing the fans at the beginning, I was like 'YASSS, that's what I need!'
MY STRUGGLE is to find similar-genre bands in Manchester so I can get support gigs and expand my network.
:) Keep looking as well, they might be harder to find but there will be some bands that are more similar to you 💪🏼
Ada Lipinska send me a link to your music 🎶 keen to hear.

Hands up if you checked if you had actually subscribed to the channel when he said 'I know who you are'.... Thankfully I already had, and there wasn't gonna be some kind of The Ring scenario where Damian crawls out the screen!
Fantastic channel. Loads of great and human advice, delivered excellently, not patronising. Thank you for all you do!

Smash it! Keep me in the loop 🤟😊
Hi Damien, could you do a video on applying to play at festivals?
I can indeed, leave it with me and let me make something in the next week or 2! Thanks for the idea! 🙂🙂🙂
@@DamianKeyes GREAT shout! i cant wait for this
I've only landed (2) small festivals so far, could use advice too!
This is a great question!!!! How does one plan a tour around festivals too?
@@DamianKeyes Would love to hear this too, I heard most festivals have their lineups confirmed by Nov/Dec already if their festival is the next summer.
Hi Damian, I really love your videos! Since I discovered you, I'm trying to see every one, since you offer such a big value! I'm trying to apply every one of the tip you give us! THANK YOU SO MUCH
"you're extroverts"
lmao yes
Great video. These are really good ideas that work no matter what the current trend or social media platform is "hot". It's all about making a personal connection with people.
my biggest struggle with my band has got to be trying to get my bandmates active and involved, its usually like pulling teeth trying to get them to do anything
this means that your band ain't it, you better on your own
Man, the content in this video is absolutely incredible! Thanks a lot Damian, we're your fans. Greetings from Brazil
"now lastly and leastly" :)
Give the fans attention and they will build with you.
G’day Damo. I was a 66 percent’er until now. Now I’m in the elite 33 percent. So when are we going for brekky? 😉
I'm not even a musician, but I'm glad I was recommended your content. You convey things in a way that many I've watched don't.
I really thought I was a fan of yours, but now you’ve mentioned the pillows I’m not too sure ...

Is it a good idea for 3 girls in a band to hand deliver Merch to some dudes house or invite strange men to have breakfast with us haha? 😂
😂😂😂
This is gold!! Thank you!
I'm so guilty of the YT comments!!!
But that’s all good because now you can start and it will make a huge difference 😊😊😊
