  • Repeat this in your head, then repeat it in the pool: kick, transition, down; kick, transition, up; kick, transition, down. The dolphin kick is used with more events in swimming than just with the butterfly stroke. If you can master the dolphin kick, it can help you swim stronger. Remember, one key tip: The biggest components of the dolphin kick is learning how to kick and move water in both directions (on your front and on your back). Give it a try and let us know how you succeed.

I would suggest using "forward" and "backward" kick instead of "down" and "up" - then the terminology doesn't change relative to prone vs supine position. Forward kick pushes the feet toward the front of the body, backward kick pulls the feet toward the back of the body.

I don't understand the repeated -to one's self- cadence/ sequence. What happens when one is saying " transition"? Why is there an extra beat ( word) ( When one says " down", or when one says " up") ? I don't get why it isn't just: " kick, transition, kick transition," etc?

It's pretty fluid once you get good at it, it's just to help out beginners break it down better.

I cant dolphin kick worth a damn lol. The slip stream keeps pushing my body back to flat, cant seem to worm back and forth against the water pressure. I suck lol 🤷‍♂️
