[Edit] Watched the previous video which clarifies a lot of things that mentioned below.
    - original comment below -
I have tried explaining these to my friends and family but asking them to self host is something not all of them are capable of or even think of doing. I don’t know what else to tell them. And not only that, these saas products have created an ecosystem of convenience. I often get asked if I switch to so and so software can I still copy something on my iPhone and paste it on my Mac, and that’s where I lose them.
You make a great point but also a little shortsighted because people like us don’t use that copy feature thingy because we tend to think how does it work, is my copied data encrypted, if so what type of encryption is used, where are the keys stored, etc etc. These are some complex systems ( not difficult to implement ) and saas products hide these complexities ( ignorance is a bliss ) and some lie straight through their teeth.
I think a middle ground would be:
    - make people aware of these complexities.
    - have a service has feature parity with the service people using.
    - creating a least painful migration path.

The thing is, bad software is much easier to avoid than bad hardware. When looking for e.g. a new phone, car or dishwasher, I have no idea how to find one from a company without some shady practices.
It's super easy to compare features. That's what everyone advertizes and most online stores let you filer by that. But to tell whether the bootloader is unlockable or how repairable the thing is you will have to consciously go out of your way and look for. And that's only the known unkonws. The are just so many misfeatures in modern products which you will only ever learn about after you hit them.
Wouldn't it be great if we had some kind of database of products and brands where we could flag them for doing 'bad stuff'?

In Brazil we have this website called ReclameAQUI (ComplainHERE) which is more broadly used but it's a great starting point. If a company's score is bad, they simply aren't going to be trusted and, thus, you get way better customer support there. Companies are also ranked based on how well they're perceived by costumers and if they find anything to complain about (duh), so it has been a great tool to motivate good practices.

I'd like to use the Futo keyboard, but unfortunately, I won't be able to.
I am visually impaired, (I only have light perception), and I use a screen reader called Talkback. On the Google Keyboard, you can move your finger around on the keys and let go once you reach a certain key to input a letter. That doesn't work on the Futo keyboard, which means I'd have to turn Talkback off to tap a key, which means I don't actually know where the keys are.
I don't know how to tell you to fix this problem. I guess you'd have to look at the Talkback source code or the Google Keyboard source code (if it's available), and those are rather big projects, which probably means it's impossible. I figured it would be good to bring it to your attention though.

I’m curious on whether you think learning touch typing may be an option
Edit: to be clear, I’m talking about physical keyboards to interface, but I guess they may be too cumbersome to use reliably on a phone/tablet

    • @dangero2000
      @dangero2000 2 місяці тому

@@__-nt2wh No chance sadly. The keys are way too small and pushed together for my big fingers. Plus, it's a touch screen, so the simple act of putting my finger on the screen will press a key when I may not want to. Plus plus, I'd have to turn Talkback off for that, so I wouldn't be able to hear the mistakes I'm making until I'm done typing, so "this is a test" will come out more like "skya td avewfe". 🙂
It's different with a computer keyboard, because I can feel the keys before pressing them, and also mussel memory and all that. There is something called Braille Screen Input for IOS and Talkback Braille Keyboard for Android, however, which allows you to type on the touch screen like it's one giant braille keyboard. That's pretty simple, because there are only 6 dots in braille, and the keyboard takes up the whole screen until you use a gesture to turn it off.
When it comes to Talkback and the braille keyboard though, while the screen reader is open-sourced, the recent changes and the braille input mode are only available in a proprietary closed-sourced version of the screen reader. The open-sourced version is only just usable. I'd love it if a blind person went to work with Futo to make an open-sourced screen reader that is equally as great as the modern proprietary version of Talkback if not better.

The problem with self-hosting is most of ISPs (outside EU) still using IPv4 in a CGNAT, even with IPv6 together in their plan, most sites still use only IPv4. So I can't reach out my selhosting services outside my home easily.
I'm with ISP with CGNAT that I asked to be out, but I have to double the price for the internet, and the others ISPs here do the same thing.
I have problem hosting services like Jellyfin or a Game server for those who do not have IPv4.
I don't want to pay more for the ISP for something I should have already in the normal plan, I don't to pay for other services like VPNs or make others download some software to join selfhosting applications.

I think the biggest barrier right now is in ease of hosting -- before we can make personal data sovereignty the default, we have to make standing up a server, deciding what applications to run, deciding where those applications will run from, and deciding where our data will live as easy as pushing a button. And changing our minds should be just as easy.
Something as simple as plug in one or more generic appliances, set them up from a web browser or phone app, and then install the services you want as if they are phone apps, but also modular, so adding capacity both locally and remotely is just as easy. If you wanted to be more hands on, you could, but the idea is that you wouldn't have to be, and someone who is basically tech illiterate could have the kind of services that only those geeky enough to have their own homelabs can enjoy today.
If we can get to that point, back to the proverbial "internet toaster", it's a lot easier of a sell.... buy a box off the shelf, plug it in, spend 2 minutes following directions, and your data is back under your control,

If I press delete, the filesystem should be SCRUBBED from that data, ie, the physical data can still be there, but the filesystem has NO IDEA where that data is on the disk any more.
To restore it you have to read the entire disk and do checksums and a WHOLE bunch of stuff to _maybe_ be able to restore files, if they haven't been owerwritten with new data. Great sales pitch Louis, but I think we need to understand the problem better before selling solutions to it.

Great video, but FUTO needs a better microphone. Sounds like there's a woollen sock on it.

Grayjay Is really problematic because creators only get a following because uploading costs $0 and viewing costs $0. If you remove ads from the equation, how is anyone supposed to build a following? Please explain that.

Ads pay for the servers sure. But GrayJay doesn't seem to be trying to replace youtube as much as offer them an ultimatum, which in place of true competition is perfectly valid. Either offer people the freedoms you claim to care about, or you'll bleed users to our free and perfectly legal alternative. And honestly? I think FUTOs focus in the long term should be a healthy sustainable ad network that isn't based on data mining and open sources their algorithm and ad requirements. If they can nail something that's break even profitable they won't need to compromise on anything. Then they can be a truly self sustaining full alternative to UA-cam, IG, Spotify etc.

@@ergerg2 I don't think you understand just how ridiculously expensive hosting videos costs, especially in 4K. You're not gonna pay for that to ads alone. However, if UA-cam treated the users better, a lot more people would feel like UA-cam deserved their money. So if they did that, plus worked on minimizing the amount of scams and ads, it might be possible to achieve something like what you're describing.
But as an ultimatum, I don't know. If UA-cam bleeds users, then the only way that they'll be able to fix this would be to make the site even less profitable than it already is. Linus was right, they really shouldn't have had 4K be a free option. There's a reason why every streaming service charges more for that, and I can guarantee you it's not simple as corporate greed.

@@MrGamelover23 To your 4k point, you're answering your own question. 4k shouldn't have been offered, I'm not suggesting grayjay make the same mistake. To your larger point about UA-cam's only option being to make the side less profitable then it already is, that's a non problem. If they started an unsustainable business model, such that a competitor like my hypothetical GrayJay could come out and force them into a death spiral just because GrayJay was willing to build around lower profit margins, their business was only surviving in the absence of true competition.
I think GrayJay could do a few things outside of ads for money, same as UA-cam, and more, and not compromise on anything ethically (in app subscriptions to users and per month subscriptions for higher resolutions of first party, on app content for example). I'm not sure how much ad networks would be willing to work with them if they couldn't strong arm them as their used to though.

@@ergerg2 Figure out how a site hosting the largest video library in the world is supposed to be profitable without charging a subscription and get back to me. I may be using youtube revanced and ad blockers everywhere, but I'm not touching grayjay with a 10 foot pole because it completely misses the point.
