Spot on Lewis , you've actually been very generous to Evil. Its not about frame shaming or being negative towards a brand. These frames cost an absolute fortune and should be more robust for that price. Its crucial info for your average punter on the street thinking of buying a Evil build or doing a home build with an Evil frame . I absolutely love the look of them and always thought of them as a dream build sort of frame...but reading the comments and watching how yours gave up the ghost just makes your eyebrows pull off some shapes 🤨
As soon as I saw the bike I was like "wonder when that'll snap". It's good you've given them the benefit of the doubt and are trying to be fair to them...but jeezo when it's predictable that a bike is gonna snap the brand needs to sort that out.
I said the same thing. Lewis and his riding will snap this in no time. I was surprised he went for an evil with their history. It's not good from a company that is so expensive, at very least they will warranty it. I had an insurgent a few years back and the frame cracked, they blamed it on the bearings being seized. What kind of company makes a frame that cracks when bearings go a little ropey. Will never buy an evil any time soon.
I guess the newer rear triangles have a weaker point there than on the older models. Seems like the failure point on your bike was similar to VanCan’s. A friend of mine has a Calling V1 and has ridden it hard for years with no issues.
I'm really curious about this as well. I"ve had a v3 INSURGENT since November of last year (the grey model before this current one) Ive done east coast DH racing, lap after lap at legacy bike park, Trestle Bike Park.... Cased the piss out of 40+ ft canyon gap at Teton Pass plus too many crashes to count and still zero issues with my frame. Ive been through a Zeb Ultimate fork, two wheel sets etc but the frame is still solid. Really sucks to not be able to pin point an issue like this. Luck or whatever is going on, im glad mine is holding up great. Makes it hard to listen to so many blatant trash talkers hating on any brand of bike but I can only imagine the frustration of the folks who have cracked more than one.
TBH I wasn't keen on the whole OF sponsorship thing but I love what it has enabled you to do. Honest, unbiased reviews of self-purchased bikes without sponsor interference are a breath of fresh air which many riders will appreciate. This has massive potential and I'm sure your channel will grow as a result, hopefully this will open the door for other riders to do the same too!
Keep up the good work mate. Love what you’re doing. Real world bike testing. Like you say, you’ll never get this type of feedback from contracted riders, or a lot of UA-cam channels that are sponsored by bike brands. (Edit) airdrop- geddit 😂

Frames snapping are a huge safety hazard up there with a helmet failing, and the industry needs to treat it as such. As someone who's broken a frame much in the same way you did, I consider myself lucky it wasn't on a big feature. I understand not wanting to shame Evil (or Norco in my case) but I sure do, because this is about safety.

Interesting that you can share this kind of stuff now dude, you’ve been fair about it and I think honesty was the best way forward. It looks a crazy place for it to let go, but I guess it’s not specifically that corner/hit, it was probably going to fail at some point in the place, I guess through a defect in the carbon. Let’s hope they hook you up with another frame and you can try again and it shows that they’re decent, if you feel safe enough hitting one. ✌️
I had an Evil Following V2, loved everything about that bike, the company was awesome. My Seat stay cracked. What annoyed me is that I'm an old guy & slow. No jumps, drops or schrapls and when It broke I was pretty upset. Paid 500 to fix and sold it. Bought an aluminum bike less than a week after the cracking, no problems since.
I remember back in around 2010 a lad who was staying in our chalet in whistler had a evil it snapped I would of hoped they would of sorted their shit out by 2023 I guess not... Just glad you were not injured when It failed..
On my 3rd rear triangle on my wreckoning.. hard to defend them anymore, most playful fun bike I've ever ridden but I'm looking forward ro getting something more reliable.
Not all carbon is the same - but at least when it cracked it did so in a way that didn’t harm the rider. Was the bikes way of saying break me in gently.
Nice honest account. The frame shouldn't fail like that obviously. You're now without a bike and it's cost you time in Wales. Hope you get a speedy resolution.
I was going to suggest looking at alloy frames from UK brands airdrop and bird. Bird do a 180mm 29er in a lovely blue/purple colour( blurple) 180front 160mm rear but 180mm with a different rear linkage and at a respectable price too. Their customer service is fantastic. Slacker looks nice too though.
In my opinion carbon frames great for factory race teams they can replace rear triangle whenever and frame after just a few runs but for everyday racer aluminum frame all day
I had an Evil Following. The frame developed a "loose" bottom bracket cavity and the BB pressfit wouldn't seat properly. They warrantied the frame, but it took a few weeks because of slow communication and hand-offs between a few people. I wasn't terribly impressed with the speed or communication, but after some emails with digital caliper measurement to prove my case, they sent a new frame. I understand they are a small company, so I give them a little leeway for that. Framewise, it was bombproof and didn't have any other issues.
Coming from aerospace, albeit a number of years ago, I was taken aback when I saw the bike industry's composites. Voids and wrinkles everywhere. That stuff would not fly in aerospace. Composites aren't like aluminum, you can't simply throw the thing in a finite element analysis program and expect a reliable solution, even if you perfectly know all the expected loads. In addition to having a sound knowledge of a composite layup, there's material selection and the plethora of variables that can come during processing. If you're a determined bike mfg, you should have some of your own people on site to validate the process. Making handlebars or wheels is one thing, but a frame? That's another beast.
Looking forward to the follow up video on the warranty. They're renowned for being communicative and helpful plus straight with their warranty and crash replacement too. Let's see if that's true.
Nice to see you being open and decent about the breakage mate, it happens I suppose, but reading the comments maybe a little too frequently. Luckily for you it wasn't while going large where it could have caused you damage. You didn't get 'fitted' while you were at Dyfi by any chance 😉
It's a shame. I don't see myself ever riding a carbon frame, but I've always considered Evil frames to be extremely cool. Which they probably are, but what good does it do if they crack.
Wow that didn't last long, just curious when you get a replacement, will you still send it ? knowing that it broke on a little roost, sending it on bigger hits, it would be in the back of you mind that it could break. Whats interesting is Kurt Sorge smashes Evils on Redbull Rampage. I have an Evil Offering and love it, but I'm pretty tame rider.
I’ve seen evil frames snapping, it’s really sad, warranty is great but they should give them a better layup or whatever can help. On my first batch Evil Offering V2 2 years of bad lines, casing jumps ( small ones nothing like you do ) and it’s as good as day one. It’s just a shame to see many snapping like this
Fair play. Sorry to hear it happened. But as you say you don't hear alot about other brands snapping because of rider contracts. Let be honest evil aren't alone here. Trek , orbea, nukeproof they all have snapping frame be it carbon or Alu. Personal I had a wreckoning v1.5 for 3 years no cracking and still going strong with the next owner. And my current wreckoning v3 no problems 2 years on . I'd love to see where it cracked. And fair play again.

Quality control and manufacturing has to be better. Sadly this is a common issue with most brands. Even design flaws. But too little info on most bikes. Bad tolerances, voids resulting in snapped frames, bottom bracket misaligned, not being round, under and oversized. Welded frames that crack in welds, the commencal Supreme suffered from this frames developing cracks and snapping in half. I rember a Trek Domane I think it was had deformed bb shell, welded badly. Usually trek don't have crazy bad welding liek this but that frma ewas so ba dit could not be fixed nor possible to install a bb at all. There are more. There are more.
Thanks for this LB, regardless of brand, all the push for carbon, and things like this happen, just seems a bit sketch. Jackson's bar breaking last year as well. I think the companies need to put some more work in and put out some more aluminum...be safe and have a good trip!!
Perhaps, but I've broken several aluminium frames. I've never managed to break a carbon / plastic frame. So I've only chosen carbon for the last few years.
This really isn´t an issue of material but rather design and quality of production. Trek had a whole Series of the alu Session frames snap at the chainstay because they were dramatically undersized in order to meet weight goals, but later iterations were not prone to that anymore. Specialized had a whole series of the early Demos crack at the chainstays as well, which was fixed by the enxt iteration.. There´s a bunch of other examples. Bottom line is, this is a result of bike manufacturers taking the customer for a fool (which sadly is true for many) and putting out sub par product because they can survive on looks and marketing alone.
Evils and Specialized Enduro snapping left right and center... Hopefully the financial burden of warrantying all these frames forces them to make more reliable frames!
I did think that was pretty short lived when I seen your insta post of the new bike, keep us updated on their response if you can, pretty interested to know how they deal with it.
Okay about snappinp and warranty but imagine that your life is on the line on an event like hardline or rampage and that happends aproaching a landing after a jump..

Fair play mate. Wonder if the salty nerds from Instagram will comment here too 🤣 loving what you're doing bro and the content is wikked. As I've said before it's cool to see you doing your own thing and having the freedom to do so.
Nice diplomatic answer but why can’t we just admit they just are fragile bikes, lots of bikes snap yes, but evil is clearly winning this snapping race by a long shot
Loved this video. I wonder if you could speak to experiences with previous bikes you've been on. I have had terrible experiences with my Norco range and their support - I'm curious if you've had any issues. Understandable if you are under some NDA even as a free agent now... but I'm curious.
My view on things like this is that every company has failures, the real test is how the company remedy the issue. I'd actually rather buy a bike from a company that's had failures and owns up and fixes the problem, than one that is an unknown.
Yeah sure. But it is possible that they come up and say: "No problem m8. U pay 500$ Crash replacement and we get u going again". This would be unacceptable, for a frame u just paid over 3k euros on some weeks/months ago, and wasnt even your fault snapping it. When things break like this > instant warranty with no asking. Otherwise bye bye and never touch again. What is also to consider, u can get pretty badly injured when it breaks in a unfortunate riding situation. If i have a bad crash or being stupid myself..no problem shit can happen, but normal riding which is that bike designed for in the first place, shouldnt break a frame. That would just be a timebomb in my opinion, no matter how good it rides.
I believe you'd see more of these types of videos from UA-camrs but they're normally being sent them to review or just given to them so you're not wanting to crap on the brand's because then they'll stop sending stuff. Great for your credibility doing these types of vids

🙌🏽
Evils and Specialized Enduro snapping left right and center... Hopefully the financial burden of warrantying all these frames forces them to make more reliable frames!
Well thats a load of rubbish mate ive had my enduro 3 years without issue !
@@blowny69 Congrats on getting the one frame that held together 😂
Can you have a go on a few nukeproof frames? Let us know how those get on
Maybe try out a Commencal FRS (furious)?
Commencals snap after about two years very often (luckily often within warranty)
@@thmsvd well that's a shame
Not sure bout other companies but GIANT calls warranty claims JRA.
Just Riding Along
Will it having dh forks affect warranty?
No
To be fair most are ripping bikes about as hard as you 😅 good to see you talking about the negatives as well as the positives 🤘🏻
Any company that makes an enduro bike should expect that thing to take an absolute thrashing.
Would have liked to see the spot
what part is broke
Isn't it like the marketing campaign: Snap, crackle pop, it's Evil!!!
I didn’t thought you will break it that fast 😂
I did think that was pretty short lived when I seen your insta post of the new bike, keep us updated on their response if you can, pretty interested to know how they deal with it.
Will do
Have you thought about getting a atherton?
Should be interesting
Okay about snappinp and warranty but imagine that your life is on the line on an event like hardline or rampage and that happends aproaching a landing after a jump..
It’s is a really cool bike but the frames need to be sorted out. You should eventually get on a we are one arrival, I’ve been on my for about a year best bike I’ve ever ridden and I’ve been on a lot of bikes
Thanks for the honestly !
🙌🏽
Ah man, saw you on Saturday at Dyfi when it was still together. 😢 Thanks for sharing though
🙌🏽
I knew that was coming the minute you mentioned you ride an Evil
Fair play mate. Wonder if the salty nerds from Instagram will comment here too 🤣 loving what you're doing bro and the content is wikked. As I've said before it's cool to see you doing your own thing and having the freedom to do so.
Lol! Cheers
can we get you on an orange switch 7??
That’s not good Lewis a downhill bike should be bomb proof, Fair play on the warranty but still you could have had a serious injury
Nice diplomatic answer but why can’t we just admit they just are fragile bikes, lots of bikes snap yes, but evil is clearly winning this snapping race by a long shot
For the premium price you pay, you should be getting a good quality carbon frame. Evil Bikes are just as expensive as Santa Cruz.

I think it would be interesting to see you on a Transition Bike. 👍
Ordered! 🙌🏽
@@LewisBuchanan 🙌🏻 🔥I hope you like it! I have the Spur and it absolutely rocks. I’ll stay tuned to see what you got.
I believe you'd see more of these types of videos from UA-camrs but they're normally being sent them to review or just given to them so you're not wanting to crap on the brand's because then they'll stop sending stuff. Great for your credibility doing these types of vids
🙌🏽
I kind of expected it, it being an Evil and all. Dunno what it is with those frames but this story is far from being alone.
