When the Ultramarines and Mortifactors reached Tarsis Ultra they found it to be a busy hive of activity as the Astra Militarum, along with the Space Marines of the Ordo Xenos' Chamber Militant, the Deathwatch, were preparing the defences for the Tyranid assault. Also included were the Tarsan Planetary Defence Forces headed by Major Aries Satria. That said a second trench line would of helped a lot, and some better protection on the flanks. The trench didn't curve around and really offer any protection on the side. Plus the Imperial troops didn't really move, not even to reinforce area's that had fallen.

The tyranids pretty much did the same thing in that book as they did here. Filled up sections of the moat with their dead to make bridges. They even developed special bulldozer carnifexes to push biomass into the moat.
Funny thing is if the Krieg troops had a second trench they likely could of held this it was pretty close. I think the Tyrnaids only had about 100k troops left and most their Carnafexes were dead.
