Been using Downeaster rod holders for 45 years , no issues. Paired with a 7/8 weight LL Bean trolling rod , nine foot and full sink line . Lost count of how many fish landed with that combination. I also use that same rod with lead core line and a Saltrout reel or one of two mooching reels. Two of the four I have are over 25 years in service with no issues. The two newest were bought as a luxury so I no longer change reels to use sink line or lead core.
I actually like the downeast rod holders because of how well they hold my 8 weight fly rods for trolling, as soon as I get a hit, I can quickly pull up and be setting the hook. The Scotty rod holders take just a bit longer to clear, which cost me a few fish when I had those. Nice job on the rod build. That thing looks sweet!

Real NICE rod build. Great looking combo. That butt section is sharp. I was lucky enough about 5 years ago to get my hands on LL Bean trolling fly rod. 9'6" 7/8 wt. And it's 2 piece!! Pairs nice with their streamlight ultra 7/8 reel.

I like that setup looks very secure in the rod holder which my current all around 5wt is not. I would like to see this taken a step further and see what kind of flies/spoons you troll with, depths, speeds etc.

I’ve got some Downeaster’s that are probably twice your age, properly tuned they work like a charm. And they’ll still be working long after I’m gone….

It’s a line that SA makes for LLBean. You have to get it in the store or call. It’s a full sink trolling line

I am wondering if a two handed fly rod would work. It would be easier for some of us people that are rod building challenged . Great looking rod and you made that look so easy.
If you take a spey rod and jam it in a holder and troll with it, your going to hell. That’s sacrilegious. The entire concept of this video makes me cringe. Go troll a spin rod.

Yeah kinda. It would have to be a pretty heavy Spey rod I think.
