    If my economics classes at college would have presented the information with beautiful scenery as you have in this video, I might have enjoyed the class better. I'm new to fly fishing however I have been bass fishing for almost all my life and to get the best results for your poppers I would suggest early in the morning right before sun up or during sun up and right before the sun goes down and all the way through the night. Not sure why they go after top waters so aggressive during that time but That's when I catch the majority of my bass on a topwater. Great video

    "...pay attention to the conventional fisherman." Very true, most of the bass I've caught on the fly rod was by applying what I've learned as a conventional fisherman. Can't wait to target bass soon, especially on poppers :). Lot's of awesome information on this video, great job guys! Keep it up! Tight Lines!

    What a badass, casting into the middle of the pads like that. LOL
    I'd never even try it, just the thought of having to wade through all those lily pads to go retrieve my spun deer hair something or other that took me hours to tie gives me the creeps. Having a boat might change my mind but wading through chest deep lily pads is like a total nightmare for me... Great video at any rate as with all of Tom's videos.

    Reminds me way back when fly fishing for 8-10” smallmouth using a tiny Heddon Jitterbug. In the shallow water they’d attack it like a school of piranha. Gosh that was fun!

    yup - fly rod and bass in texas challenging but worth it - lots of fun when I can't get to trout.....and nice change from bait cast rod and reel - but for sure - I am using my mat rod and 80lb braid in heavy texas mats and reeds - i love my fly gear too much to risk lossing plus I do yet know how to flip with a fly rod.. :). maybe thats the tenkara method..... :). nice video lots of great information

    To conclude, Use intermediate sinking line. Keep the fly under 1-2 feet under the water for any imitation flies you will have success most times throughout the season.
    Try dry flies early in the morning or just before Sunset.
    Good Luck.

    Being more of a conventional bass guy, fishing 20Ib test in pads and heavy veggies seems ridiculous, of course it’s not when fly fishing, but we fish 60-80Ib test braid in the slop with frogs and punching rigs...

    • @jacobstarr9010
      @jacobstarr9010 3 роки тому

      Well, theoretically you could use a braid for bass leaders, but I’m not sure if they’d cast differently since I never use them. As I mostly use 0.013”-0.015” tippet for top water bass fishing, it would equate to about 40-60 lb braid. For example, you could use:
      24” of 150 lb braid (or 0.022”)
      21” of 100 lb braid (or 0.018”)
      20” of 80 lb braid (or 0.017”)
      19” of 60 lb braid (or 0.015”).
      However, I have never tried this or ever heard of someone doing this. But it would work in theory. I’m just not sure how it would cast.

    Wonderful and very informative! For anyone wishing to go further in depth for Smallies they should check out Tim Holschlag. For a really deep dive into the subject - find a copy of Book of The Black Bass. Most good copies will be reprints out of the seventies. But a close to or an original copy could be a nice gift for the fly fishing Bronzeback hunter.

    How close you you trim the extra tag ends on your homemade leaders? I cut it pretty close by my flies sometimes get caught in a cast on the little tag end nubs.

    • @newflyfisher

    Can a 9’-8wt be used for small &. large mouth bass, blue Gill, crappie, and walleye? We have a lot of these species in our area so looking for a rod reel setup to hit all these species and not have to buy multiple rod/reel setups. Thanks

    • @newflyfisher
      @newflyfisher  3 роки тому +1

      Michael, for getting started that rod is fine for bass and other species. If you have the option of what rod size, you might want to consider a six weight but if not, then certainly the 8 weight is fine. Have fun!

    What weighted rod you recommend for bass fishing ?

    • @newflyfisher
      @newflyfisher  6 місяців тому +1

      Best all-around bass rod is either a seven or eight weight. You can cast big poppers or mice patterns in wind and also cast heavy streamers or crayfish patterns on sinking lines. Hope that helps

    Do i have to match the weight of the fly with the rod?

    • @newflyfisher
      @newflyfisher  3 роки тому

      generally you should. a pike fly that is seven inches long won't cast well on a 4 weight, but a small 2-3 inch streamer will. check with you local fly shop or use this guide to help you: www.orvis.com/fly-rods

    • @andrewingram2520

      I primarily fly fish for LMB, when getting a rod outfit it's not as much about the size of the fish you're targeting but the size of the fly you want to throw. If you want to throw bigger flies (which I would for LMB) I would get a heavier rod 8-10 wt, I can send you a chart on how the fly size compares to the rod and line weight
