    The part about minimizing people is really interesting. It's not just about material things, it's also about things taking up space in your head!

      Arasu uhbarp That is a tricky one and I don't have all the answers. All I know is that you need to try to put yourself first in the case that something affects your life in a very negative way.

      keep ourselves happy or balanced
      in life. Or speak directly to the

      Hey Rachel, you are so right! Love BL. Her music is so soothing.. I just want to move into her place! But that would mean abandoning my husband and kids, and I kinda really love them even if they’re messy and collectors! I have become a major purger, however, now that we’re in a rental I dream of the neutral colours in Bretta’s flat. It reminds me of the home I renovated and left behind. I am in Westchester-just a little below Connecticut! One advise for Bretta-I love your pencil thin font for text, but sometimes it overlaps with dark items in the video; maybe move the text up or around a little. Thank you.

    Exactly the way I started, drawers. Took a year to go through the whole house. Then we sold all of that or gave it away and moved into a smaller home. Started over getting rid of all the extra. Then we moved into a small apartment 340 square feet for the short term future being near an elderly mom. Big pieces we weren’t ready to get rid of went into our shop storage. Our oldest daughter and family moved into our small house. I do not know how long this will last or what we will do once we aren’t needed here but we do have everything we need now and we’ve lived here a year and a half without going into that storage for anything so my decisions have felt right.

    Great video, I keep things for sentimental reasons, things given to me from friends who have passed away.
    As you said things are not people, but I do remember them when I see the object.
    I do want to declutter and have less but it’s the emotional attachment.
    Memories can’t be taken away. But I like reminders in photos etc

    • @ChiaraFrancioli
      @ChiaraFrancioli 3 роки тому +1

      That's the one area I have to be mindful of too. Tbh over years of constant decluttering there are perhaps a couple of sentimental things I regret giving away and a pang of pain comes when I think about them, not things I ever loved mind you, but things from some meaningful period of my life. As a "policy" if I don't like/need something I try to give it away the sooner I can before it becomes some revered relic (eg baby clothes)

    Having a good clear out. I’m giving all my stuff to charity. That way I’m way I’m hopefully helping someone in need of something. If I was to sell it all, I’d probably use the money to buy more stuff. It’s a win win situation. I never realised how stuff can be draining and hold you back until I discovered minimalism.

    Charities used to send out pens with requests for donations. As a secondary school teacher, I would save them to give to students who didn’t have pens. I’m retired now, but schools are hard pressed for cash in the UK so if I have anything I think they can use, I pass it on. I offer books to libraries, children’s books to nurseries. If they’re not needed, they go to charity. I’m currently going through the kitchen store cupboards. If it’s in date and edible, but I don’t need it, I give it to the food bank. Inspired by this wonderful woman. 🙏

    Hi Benita. New subscriber. Your videos are like my escapist fantasy. In a mouldy rented house in the English countryside, a teenager who tidies when teenagers do - rarely -, a husband who almost never puts things back where they belong, and a double coated large dog, it would be like your worst nightmare. Can't complain, though. It's not minimalist tidy wood on white but there's life pulsating in dust and dog hair, people who are mad but beautiful, at least mostly on the inside. I do try to keep things nice but it's an uphill struggle. So I watch your videos to soothe my soul. They remind me of my brief days in Sweden, years ago. Also, watching that earlier video (Autumn?) of you meeting someone and eating cake, another escapist fantasy in this forever lockdown. If there is one tiny complaint I would make is that I can't afford none of the beautiful stuff you show, I mean a lamp for £325??? I would if I could but sadly not, although I do agree that it's best to buy less but better. I also believe it's best to repurpose and buy second hand but then you wouldn't get your commission, which I'm sure comes in handy.
    Hope your health gets better, take care. Have you ever made a video about your path to minimalism? Were you always like this? Best wishes, Juno x

    I'd like to point out that during your minimalism adventure you will inevitably throw out something you later wish you hadn't. Don't beat yourself up about that. It's all part of the experience. I do think of it as an adventure into the unknown and all adventures have ups and downs. When I make mistakes I just accept that life is about balance and at times we win but we also have to lose. For some reason that's how it's meant to be so just go with it.

    Hi Benita, I just wanted to say thank you for your videos, I have watched so many other videos about minimalism and found them too unrealistic for me and too much about the aesthetic and becoming part of a trend! I find your videos very straightforward and practical which is more motivating for me. You have helped me be more realistic and not sentimental with things that are actually causing my mental health to suffer. Your videos are also very calming which helps greatly, i feel more in control of my own life since starting to follow your example in reality. Thank You again 🙂

    Very good tips: I have been in the process of doing that, and you end up having a lot more time to do things that interest you or that you like when you declutter your home. One thing though: please do not throw away in the trash what you do not want. Try as much as you can donating to second hand stores, etc, and try to keep things out of the landfill!

    Love your wording of being made the custodian of someone else's belongings. It's important not to feel obligated by choices made by earlier generations. We do get to choose for ourselves. That thought helped me when I finally got rid of a huge and ugly set of tableware I inherited from my beloved grandmother.

    When we moved over a year ago we got rid of 75% of what we owned. Our new home ( I paid cash for a brand new build), and am debt free. I will never be an extreme minimalist, but I have what I love, and everything has a place. Cleaning our home is very easy now, it takes me maybe 10 to 15 minutes each day. It is always fresh, neat, clean and tidy. I went to the UK and Paris recently, for 2 weeks and it was amazing, I was glad I had the money to have such a wonderful time there. Spending money on the important things is key. tfs 💐💐💐

It is not feasible in many households and not good for the environment.In my opinion minimalist is rather giving away what you dont need or use. And that is a big difference. The first is decorating, the latter is minimalism.

    Space really does cost you money, if you are not using it you are wasting your money. We currently have a small bathroom and adjacent room which is used for storage that we don't use fully, it costs us money, we are planning on renovating the kitchen and the bathroom and using part of the "storage" space to increase the size of the other 2. We will then be using the space to its best potential. We are trying to be minimalist, it's an on going process, but worth it.😁👍

    The inside of my home is grey n white with black appliances. That’s what attacted me to your videos. I said I needed more color like with my paintings.Your home is beautiful and the minimal style is great. I’d trade you if I could. Hubby hates the cold.😁Oh well😋

    I have been working at minimalismfor two years now & still have a long way to go. Downsizing unwanted relationships is such good advice. I had a friend that would insult me & run me down. I even talked to my minister about "how to get rid" of her. He said "hand in there". Bad advice, let them go. It doesn't have to be a nasty confrontation, do it slowly!

      That friend is no friend so definitely time to let go!

    Our family is currently renovating our house and its a chaos. I'm very unproductive because everything feels suffocating. But of course I know this is just temporary. Can't wait to finally have our house finished.

    • @BenitaLarsson
      @BenitaLarsson  4 роки тому

      Oh, that renovation stage where it’s worse before it gets better isn’t a good one. Keep an eye on the prize, it’ll pass and you’ll have your home back AND improved!

    I have tooo many items, I want to be able to fit all my belongings including shoe in a large suitcase, I find it hard to detach because in my head, someone in Jamaica could use this but in the end the items doesn't make it to Jamaica instead just take up space. Today I will get rid of some more things today
