The Royal Danish Orchestra under Sir Michael Schønwandt
Excepting James Johnson, the Copenhagen Ring is sung by an entirely Scandinavian cast, mostly in-house from the Royal Danish Opera. Nevertheless, the singing in this recording of the Ring is considered to be world class.
The production by Kasper Bech Holten, now Director of Opera at the Royal Opera in London, has been called the Feminist Ring for its unusual perspectives on Wagner's female characters and the decision to choose a framing story focused on Brünnhilde. It is also well-known for its setting in a familial instead of an epic sphere, and its elaborately detailed, cramped set designs.
The video recording is characterised by frequent cuts and unusual camera angles. 18 cameras in total were used, including viewpoints from the drain of Mime's sink during the Forging Scene in Siegfried.
I uploaded Siegfried instead of Rheingold first because both Das Rheingold and Die Walküre are already available on UA-cam. Many thanks to whoever uploaded them for introducing me to this excellent Ring.
May be unsuitable for conservative Wagnerians.
Iréne Theorin in this recording is amazing!!!
56:32 the staging of this violent "de-Valkyrification," and the emotional buildup to it, is probably the single most effective moment I have ever seen in opera. Just a gut-wrenching moment, brilliantly acted by James Johnson and Irene Théorin. That timpani player is beating on our hearts.
My thoughts exactly. I've always loved this particular moment.
Cette production est réellement somptueuse. Quelle mise en scène. Quelle direction de chanteurs. Quel cast et quel chef et quel orchestre.
Thank you so much for uploading this wonderful version! A near-perfect fusion of drama and music!
James Johnson! He uses a different colour as the Wanderer in Siegfried ( part of it is its written differently). He sounds weary, more gravitas. Very thoughtful searching artist. I'm proud he is American. He does us proud.
What a voice James Johnson!
Singing is not bad. The staging, thought not traditional, is far better than other modern production. And the conductor seem to me like he do a good job. So it a pretty decent production. We might even say good.
Great production. Thank you very much !!

Was this production funded in part by the Danish wine industry? 😂
Yes, the whole reason why The Ring Cycle had a chance in Denmark was because of the enormous funding provided by A.P. Møller Mærsk Shipping. It's also Mærsk that funded the construction of The Royal Opera. Furthermore, most operatic productions nowadays are made possible by funds from The Augustinus Foundation, and still A.P. Møller & Chastine Mc-Kinney Møllers Fund.. It's quite horrible really because private corporations and very wealthy people in Denmark have quite a lot to say in terms of what is staged and in which direction the performing arts are to be steered.
