  • Wotan - James Johnson
    Brünnhilde - Irene Théorin
    Siegmund - Stig Fogh Andersen
    Sieglinde - Gitta-Maria Sjöberg
    Fricka - Randi Stene
    Hunding - Stephen Milling
    Director - Kasper Bech Holten
    The Royal Danish Orchestra under Sir Michael Schønwandt
    Excepting James Johnson, the Copenhagen Ring is sung by an entirely Scandinavian cast, mostly in-house from the Royal Danish Opera. Nevertheless, the singing in this recording of the Ring is considered to be world class.
    The production by Kasper Bech Holten, now Director of Opera at the Royal Opera in London, has been called the Feminist Ring for its unusual perspectives on Wagner's female characters and the decision to choose a framing story focused on Brünnhilde. It is also well-known for its setting in a familial instead of an epic sphere, and its elaborately detailed, cramped set designs.
    The video recording is characterised by frequent cuts and unusual camera angles. 18 cameras in total were used, including viewpoints from the drain of Mime's sink during the Forging Scene in Siegfried.
    I uploaded Siegfried instead of Rheingold first because both Das Rheingold and Die Walküre are already available on UA-cam. Many thanks to whoever uploaded them for introducing me to this excellent Ring.
    May be unsuitable for conservative Wagnerians.

    Formidable production! La direction d’acteurs est exceptionnelle, c’est vraiment le point fort de cette mise en scène. Les chanteurs sont aussi très bons. Un de mes Rings préférés.

    I have only seen a handful of different productions of this opera but I must say that this interpretation of Act 1 communicated to me much more clearly the nuances of the drama and the complication of emotions that develop between the characters. Stephen Milling plays a perfectly menacing, beast of a husband, and I am impressed with the acting of all the performers and how well the director has captured that.

    I've have only just now finished Act I, lying in bed. I got up an applauded. What a great performance of a truly great work of art. Each act is a dramatic and musical masterpiece. This entire production, from the orchestra to the design and direction to the truly great singing actors, is quite special. The audio recording could be better (and, after all, UA-cam does not offer great audio anyway), but that hardly detracts from the overall experience.

    It's such a sad story. Siegmund and Sieglinde had no power over their destiny. Wotan fathered them and put them through hardship to shape them for his own plans. He manipulated them and they had no idea. Once they divenge a bit from the path he made for them by comitting incest, they were useless and Siegmund was pushed off the chess board. It's a fascinating moment where Wotan reach out to the dying Siegmund, perhaps to give him a last moment of love. But Siegmund droves himself away from him almost in fear. It's clear that it pains Wotan that his son doesn't recognize him and only sees him as his enemy. Wotan is denied a last goodbye and perhaps forgiveness. And later Wotan breaks down and mourns over Siegmund's corpse, after he swears punishment on Brünhilde. It shows how deeply affected he is by the ordeal.

      I agree, the tragedy at its hear is what makes Walküre my favourite part of the cycle. Although I'd say it's pretty clear that it's not the incest that's the problem -- in fact, Wotan chides Fricka for taking issue with it. The problem is that Wotan has been manipulating them and therefore would be in breach of his contract with Fafner if he set Siegmund against him!

      @@EnricoDandolo1204 , thanks for uoloading this stunningly beautiful version!, And I agree that the tragedy of Sigmund und Siglinde is not the incest. However, it is sad that Sigmund and Siglinde have no choice. They have no control at all over their fates. Together they have stolen their one and only moment of absolute happiness. But for the rest of their short lives they have been used and abused by the powers that be. And exactly that is Wagners point. In order to get rid of that evil ring, Wotan needs a free agent. And Siegfried is supposed to be that free superhero who will save the world.
      One of the most beautiful moments of "The Valkyrie" is "Die Todesverkuendung", which is the moment when the valkyrie reveals herself and tells Sigmund that he will not survive his duel with Hunding, but that she will carry his body into Valhalla where all brave fallen warriors are gathered in order to fight Ragnarok when the time has come. Sigmund thinks at first that this is not such a bad prospect. There will be wine and women, and he will be re-united with his father Wolfe, who is also known as Wotan. However, when he finds out that Siglinde cannot come with him, he basically says " If Siglinde cannot be with me, I am not interested in that stuff - wine, women and Wotan - fuck you all! I will not come with you!!" The valkyrie has never encountered such a difficult and stubborn client before. She is profoundly moved by Sigmunds profound love - something she has so far never experienced herself - , and she decides ad hoc to help Sigmund. The best version of "Die Todesverkuendung" which you can find here, is the version with a still very young Peter Hoffmann as Sigmund and Gwynneth Johnes as the valkyrie from the so-called "Jahrhundert-Ring" of Pierre Boulez and Patrice Chereau. It is beautiful and very touching.

    Fantastic first two acts ... thanks so much for the upload. The attention to detail, the engagement with history, the human drama, the new spin on an old tale ... it is all quite engrossing. For the haters who want to see dwarfs, dragons, magic swords, giants, etc, all I can say is that there are plenty of CGI-enhanced sword-and-sorcery movies available on Netflix if that is what you are craving. Personally, I am tireed of that kind of escapist nonsense ... I want art to engage my mind and my emotions, which this production does. On to part two !

      I should also mention that Stephen Milling is easily the most formidable Hunding I have ever watched. The peril and the imminent probability of violence that is bubbling just under that tweed suit is unmistakable. In no other production has the moral courage of Sieglinde been more evident. Having her pull the sword out of the tree made total sense as a result, and was an incredibly moving and electric moment: she was overwhelmed with the realization that she was a free and autonomous agent. Amazing ...

    My only real complaint is that Wotan doesn't kill Hunding. That's one of the best scenes, in my opinion: when Wotan, having fulfilled his obligation to Hunding and Fricka, sees no further use for the man who killed his son.

    • @NigeHaines
      @NigeHaines 3 роки тому +3

      Wagner edited the original draft of this opera quite a bit and one of the changes he settled on in Act 2 is Hunding is not slain by Wotan, but left alive to follow Wotan's instruction: "Get hence, slave! Bow before Fricka." I can see why some interpretations of this opera refer back to the original story line where Wotan fatally disposes of Hundling.

    • @AtiqZabinski
      @AtiqZabinski 2 роки тому +1

      @@NigeHaines Thank you for sharing that; I did not know that. I for one always thought Wotan's killing Hunding was gratuitous and could see no point in it other than to assuage the viewer's sense of evil going unpunished. Why would Wotan go through the agony of betraying his son in order to appease Fricka, only to strike down the worshipper whose prayers she was answering, sending him off to the other world with a message for Fricka? Are we to think that Fricka won't be bothered by that and there will be no consequences of that for Wotan?

      @@NigeHaines It’s a fascinating notion, but I’ve never heard of that revision. Do you have a link to any source. The music itself depicts Hunding falling and hitting the ground. I’ve never seen a single production where Hunding remains alive, but it’s an interesting idea.

      @@yossipeles7864 It is very well sung, conducted and played. But the production is not what Wagner wanted to depict; nor what I want to see. As I said about the Copenhagen "Siegfried" - I do not like "alternative" productions with modern props, modern clothes, "innovative" ideas (like Sieglinde drawing the sword instead of Siegfried...), etc.. Although I can watch these productions occasionally, as a variety between all the traditional opera productions that I watch, they can never be the "great" opera experiences for me. This "modern" staging was also far from the worst. (The worst from all times being the Bayreuth Lohengrin production with laboratory rats 2011... Here I would like to place the "vomiting" smiley!)
    The same singer for both Siegmund and Siegfried is a bit confusing, but on the other hand they are supposed to be father and son, so... I hope he did not strain himself too much!
    Both Stig Fogh Andersen and Gitta-Maria Sjöberg should lose some weight I think, if they want to play Wagner heroes and heroins. But apart from that, I think they were really good, and I can well imagine them in a "real" traditional production at the Met!
