  • Siegfried - Stig Fohg Andersen
    Mime - Bengt-Ola Morgny
    Wanderer - James Johnson
    Erda - Susanne Resmark
    Brünnhilde - Irene Théorin
    Fafner - Christian Christiansen
    Alberich - Steen Byriel
    Waldvogel - Gisela Stille
    Director - Kasper Bech Holten
The Royal Danish Orchestra under Sir Michael Schønwandt
Excepting James Johnson, the Copenhagen Ring is sung by an entirely Scandinavian cast, mostly in-house from the Royal Danish Opera. Nevertheless, the singing in this recording of the Ring is considered to be world class.
The production by Kasper Bech Holten, now Director of Opera at the Royal Opera in London, has been called the Feminist Ring for its unusual perspectives on Wagner's female characters and the decision to choose a framing story focused on Brünnhilde. It is also well-known for its setting in a familial instead of an epic sphere, and its elaborately detailed, cramped set designs.
The video recording is characterised by frequent cuts and unusual camera angles. 18 cameras in total were used, including viewpoints from the drain of Mime's sink during the Forging Scene in Siegfried.
I uploaded Siegfried instead of Rheingold first because both Das Rheingold and Die Walküre are already available on UA-cam. Many thanks to whoever uploaded them for introducing me to this excellent Ring.
May be unsuitable for conservative Wagnerians.

I didn't enjoy this production of Siegfried nearly as much as its Rheingold and Walkure (mind you that's probably Wagner's fault lol). I did love how they did the Erda and Wotan scene though. Thanks again for uploading!

Unfortunately not :( The video is in source resolution, I don't think the Copenhagen Ring ever released in HD.

Normally I do not like "alternative" settings of operas, such as modern furniture and other props, modern clothes (although Brünnhilde's were not THAT bad) etc.. Or that the producer tries to change the plot or the characters into something else than the composer had in mind. Except for the fact that it destroyes the romance, I think it is insolent towards the composer. Here, I suppose the idea was that Siegfried should be some anti-hero...
I can take it occasionally though, because it can be fun just to see what they have made of a story that I know so well... And this rendering of "Siegfried" was quite alright, I think - in this respect. I could never think, that an "alternative" production was GREAT.
The sound was quite bad here (I have only heard this UA-cam version), so I could not really appreciate the music and singing. I believe though, that both Stig Fohg Andersen and Irene Théorin could manage a really good traditional production of "Siegfried" as well. Both vocally, acting-wise and look-wise (tall and blond scandinavian singers are perfect for Wagner roles!). Although they both need to lose some weight to play a great hero and heroine, as they SHOULD be played! :-)

Well, personally I believe that, especially with Wagner, reinterpreting opera shows more respect to the librettist than just rehashing the old stuff over and over again. Keep in mind that it was Wagner who wrote the lines "doch einmal im Jahre fänd ich's weise / dass man die Regeln selbst probier ..." Surely he would have appreciated it that even 130-odd years after his death, stage directors think about his work and put new spins on it.
I believe Kaspar Holten's idea with this Ring in general (the other operas are on my channel) was to focus on it as a very personal family drama set in a 19th century context, centered on Brünhilde. I agree that Holten doesn't seem to like Siegfried (neither do I), though he comes across as less of an arse in Götterdämmerung.
Regrettably the sound isn't all that much better on DVD (though that may be because I bought it in a Vietnamese dime store). The singing is pretty good across the board, though not world-shattering. Andersen as Siegmund and Siegfried stands out, as does Stephen Milling as Hunding, but for me this Ring's greatest appeal is how well the cast act together and the attention to detail in the production.

What sets this production apart is its concieved by Wagner scholars who know the text and understand all the coplex relationships. Often, the director puts the singers in modern dress. Period. Here everything "works" and nearly always makes sense. My appreciation for this work has greatly enhanced. The Wanderer is truly great, Siegfried believable as a teenager, and a Mime for the ages.
