- I said it before, subcontractor is short form for substandard. Anybody with a few bucks could open a business and get in the BBB so do your homework on the guys doing your roof they may have just started roofing yesterday!

I have ZERO roofing experience. I just re-did the roof on my shed. 12×16 barn style roof. Replaced the roof deck as well. Although labor intensive, once I had the basics down it was very easy. Only three poorly placed nails. How does a contractor get away with that? Where is his pride? Integrity? This video is truly shocking. Anyways, good vid. A real eye opener. Thanks for posting.

I always thought you get what you pay for. Not in this case! I went with Hy-Grade roofing even though they were by far the most expensive quote I received. Worst decision I could have made. They promised to install the roof in 4-6 weeks, of course they were late. When they finally showed up without the proper equipment and they damaged my property. Sad part is that my poor wife found the damage after coming home from her frontline COVID job. Broke my heart to see how upset she was when she saw the damage! SHAME ON HY-GRADE! They are really proud of the “Quality Audit” that they do, but of course they won’t give you a copy of the audit…lol BTW - the “Quality Audit” they did at my house consisted of 2 guys coming over to pick up the leftover junk they left at my house for a month. They never even went up on the roof! Horrible customer service experience! Save your money use someone else!

Jesus! I am a DIYer and have done 3 patches on my shed roof over the years. First one got me 10 years with no leaks. Learned allot since then. Latest patches should outlast the shed which is going to get replaced in the near future.

I will agree with ya on the 3 layer tear off in summer bit and raise you a very steep 2 story cedar shake tear off infested with wasps, and hornets. While coated in moss and old rotten leaves in the valleys! That was a mess of a rotten roof!
A common logical fallacy with tradesman is this: we often believe that having done _lots_ of work is equivalent to having done lots of work _correctly._ It isn't.
Expertise is, unfortunately, hard to come by. Thus, most people (both customers and installers) simply don't know any better. I remember lecturing the new guys about nailing carefully and they would look at me like I was being petty. You just have to understand that most roofers are young men who are extremely energetic- and they already know everything. As for customers: only the price, the inconvenience, and the color of the shingles will seem relevant to them. For these reasons, this sort of shoddy procedure is never going to change. _Caveat emptor._
The other one that always made my blood boil is the "good roofers don't need chalk lines" mentality. Oh, and the "you aint gonna see that anyway" attitude. And let's not forget the roof tar quick-fixers. Sheesh. It's hard to find conscientious workers.
The problem can sometimes come when the contractor is great at what they do, but not as good at hiring a great crew... A lot of times the one you hire because they impressed you is NOT the one that comes out to do the job.
I was part of the original roofing crew for this job. We spent all day and I mean all day at a 24hr nudie strip club

Nah, not the worst. I saw a home owner who did this same thing but started on the front, went up over the ridge and then down the back side. No underlayment at all.
First heavy wind storm and the entire back was in the yard. I think three or four stayed attached to the flue.

To all homeowners...
Get three bids from 3 different IN STATE companies. Ask for references/testimonials WITH contact info. Ask for insurance information/cert of insurance. Finally, ask for certification from the material supplier (if applicable) that they're a certified installer. If any of the three companies tries to give you the run around or gives excuses for not providing those documents, they're out. No excuses. Also, choose from companies that are based in your state. Why? Because when contractors go out of state they cut corners. It's not always because they'rescam artists or because they're bad people. It's just a simple fact that when you go out of state you don't have all of you're usual resources available to you. You might not have the right equipment or the right material or you may not have enough man-power.
The simple way to avoid all that is to hire in-state contractors. It will save you A LOT of headache and money...
When it comes to documentation, there's no excuse for not having these things. I can call my Insurance agent and have a cert emailed to whoever I want in about 5 minutes. I have a list of references (being that I do commercial work mainly) ready to go with my brochure. I have all my certifications ready to go at a moments notice. It's not that difficult but it shows their level of professionalism.
Imagine a storm coming through and the shingles slide off the roof in one piece in the front lawn.

Thank you for this video, I live in Canada and I have to do my roof again after 18 years. The contractor was using the IKO shingles on my roof and I was told that the product has 25 years of warranty, however, the shingles on the sunny side started to fall apart already after 18 years. I have contacted IKO and they are offering me the warranty reimbursement ONLY if I use their shingles again. My question is what is the normal lifespan for the shingles in general? How good these IKO shingles in comparison to the other brands?
It's not just banging shingles on there other factors involved like calculating the proper ventilation peak an fascia proper flashing ?

I hate roofing, so over 30 years ago I did my own house and I put roofing cement on every nail head and on every butt joint of every single. This took an incredible amount of time and patience. It's been over thirty years and no leaks. Doing a new 30 square barn as I post this and we are doing the same method, cementing every nail head and every butt joint with a GAF architectural shingle on this building. The shingles I used thirty years ago were made by CELOTEX out of Florida. They are no longer manufacturing shingles but GAF has a high end shingle that seems to be better because of the glue stip on the bottom of each "tab". The bitterness of poor quality remains long after the sweetness of a low price has disappeared. Good luck to all these "fast" roofers stealing your money.

Just tells me that you don't understand how roofing systems work. I have roofed hundreds of roofs and they have all lasted as long or longer than the roof warranty covers. Even by using all of your extra precautions roofs still wear out. A thirty year warranty on a roof is very common.
Michael Shenefield Yeah, I don't see why the extra steps James did would be necessary. However, it may give some extra protection in a freak severe storm situation. The shingles I laid on my woodworking shed had clear plastic strips protecting strips of tar on the undersides. Aren't you supposed to pull that plastic strip off just before setting the shingle in place so that tar melts and bonds to the shingle below it on a hot sunny day? Maybe not all modern asphalt shingles have that feature? Maybe I wasn't supposed to peel those off? idk Hasn't leaked so far, so oh well. lol
CmdrGendoIkari those strips are to prevent the shingles from sticking together when theyre in the bundle. most say right on the plastic strip to not remove
charlesgrave Mine didn't say anything, or I wouldn't have removed those. Went on to read about that, and yeah, the manufacturers generally say it's not necessary to remove those. Apparently the glue bleeds through the cellophane to bond with the shingle below on the first hot days anyways, so you're just wasting time if you remove those.
i've come across this many times. It's a shame that the homeowners have to pay for 2 roofs. I can put on 14 bundles an hour, and I bet if I shingled quickly like the last installer, I might be able to put on 1 more bundle an hour. Just isn't worth it to put on so poorly. I usually only see the shingles falling out that bad when the roof is 8/12 or more. I've even seen just all the shims (back piece of the laminated shingle) fall out and leave the tooth part of the shingle.

WSC Woodcraft ineptitude can be found in any profession. I have worked with surgeons that should not be allowed to work on animals, let alone people. (A lifetime ago, long story) Certain construction specialties seem to have more idiots than others, though.

Used to work as a surgical tech and sometimes surgical assistant, and for a while worked in a pool that helped out at most of the operating rooms around town. During that time I met many surgeons, many who were brilliant individuals and actually gifted at what they do. But I also met some real idiots who, in my opinion, should not even be allowed to practice on animals, let alone human patients.
2 brothers who are general surgeons and share a practice, they also insist on assisting on each other's cases as well. However they struggle with a festering sibling rivalry that gets in the way every time they try to work together. Inevitably during the middle of a procedure one of them will disagree with the other about something, usually some trivial BS, and the fight is on. I have never seen fists get thrown, but have expected that to happen many times. Someone will get too pissed off and start to kick trash cans across the room, throw surgical instruments, and screaming and cussing each other out, till someone storms out of the room, leaving the other one to finish the procedure. Everyone's moods are shot, and tempers are short, and the staff just have to try and deal with it.
Another couple of brothers, and these 2 are orthopedic surgeons. Neither one is that good of a surgeon technically, but they both have these huge egos and think that they are God's gift to medicine. The older one also thinks that he is a spinal specialist. One day he is waiting for younger brother to help assist him on a spinal case, but after about a 5 minute wait older idiot says to get case started. So we put the patient to sleep, and get everything setup to go, and idiot acts like his hair is on fire. He makes the skin incision down the spine, then starts to rip and tear and hack his way in the pt's spine. In 7 minutes he is cutting alongside of the spine and he is still charging ahead like a bull in a china closet. All of a sudden he sees that he has barely just missed a large nerve root, could have paralyzed the pt. So now he starts showing everyone and bragging how he just missed paralyzing the patient; even calls other surgeons walking by the room to come in so he can show them and brag about how he just missed screwing the pooch. I had to fight the very powerful urge to take my sterile ortho mallet (a 3# steel mallet) and smack him up side of the head. I hope that the patient was okay afterwords, idiotboy told me that he was.
I have always said that if I was in the ER with both femurs fractured, and either one of these 2 idiots coming to examine me, that I would throw my pain racked body off of the gurney and drag it out of that ER before I wouold ever let either one touch me.
Another orthopedic guy, and this one is no rocket scientist either. He could sell ice to eskimos, and all of his patients give him glowing reviews online, but knowing what I know I am highly suspicous. Anyways he does almost anything orthopedic, and it does not matter whether it is a run of the mill knee arthroscopy, or a total hip, ortho boy will get into the middle of the procedure, and suddenly forget how to do that procedure. His physician's assistant will have to tell him step by step how to proceed to finish the case. Every time. I would never let him work on anyone that I cared about either. Fortunately none of his cases are ever that technically demanding.
There are others, but that should resolve anyone's curiosity about my cliffhanger.
On the bright side .. it made it really easy for you to remove the old roof.

If you really believe every sub does substandard work that's incredibly ignorant. Being in business we use subs and get subbed all the time. Not every small business can take the burden of a large payroll, doesn't mean the quality of work is affected. Sure there are hacks everywhere but that doesn't make everyone else a hack too.

+smashingstuff09 that blow off isn't that bad as the roofer who posted the video can attest , I've seen blow offs of over 500 square before where 50 squares of material was wrapped around every penetration on the roof , I've seen an entire 300 square roof simply " slide off " the gutter edge & stand itself upright on the ground , like one big black board , all blow offs are from improper attachment & high winds .

The bundle packages say "self adhesive" meaning the little strips of mastic will stick the bottom of the shingle to the previous one BUT IT ALSO says to use nails. It's not a one or the other option. I was a roofing contractor in Calif. I heard of someone misunderstanding the installation instructions resulting in the same thing. As the video shows there is no nails on the shingles.
I suspect alcohol was the deciding factor here.
My heart goes out to the home owners...what a terrible job..and now, getting compensated is almost impossible....guys like this should be taken out in the street...stripped naked, and whipped!...if we had a justice system that would allow this, then there would be a lot less people ripping others off like this!!!

Maybe it was a good lesson. homeowner maybe got a few bids n these guys were so much cheaper. idk who knows. but ive seen it in building custom homes. homeowners gets four or five contractors to bid a house. N they automatically go with the cheapest. then the homeowner is upset with the home when it's finished . there's a thousand different liittle things builders can do to improve a home. and the cheapest guy mostly like is not going to do a lot of those things.

This is where your local building inspector comes in and says NO! I hate the bldg dept and inspectors but sometimes i also love them. My problem wasn't even close to this bad but the inspector told them they needed to re-do it.

Liver Phone I'm a Hispanic and by use a hammer I mean to fix up the nails that the nail gun bends or doesn't nail in properly we use HITACHI NV45AB2 guns slower but way more reliable than Bostitch RN46 nail gun a nail gun is fast doesn't mean it's always going to fire reliably my step dad was trained by workers who had done roofing for over 30 years of course I would use a nail gun we get paid by the work $20 per square

sorry, dont want to be rude, but its a dumb comment, most people dont know anything about their home, they just want to live and be happy, and think of all the elder people, or single mother, or people that dont have time, or have a rough pass in their life, you just dont know the situation... anyway, here in quebec-canada, it would be paid by the insurance or the professional order of the contractor, and thats it... poor people who live in this house, this is fucked up.

Couldn't most of them shingles be used again. Really, why take it in the hole again. Would not a good roofer know how to save the home owner money by replanting shingles that could last 30 years, even 25 years would be worth the trouble. I also noticed the worker is wearing winter clothing. I thought shingles were to be installed so the tar can melt the installation together. A good windstorm before this roof cures correctly will end in the same issue the bad roof was in if they get lifted from another windstorm like he mentioned.
I re shingled a huge garage for the first time in my life in the first summer we owned our 100 year old home. 8 years later the state was hit with a freak 100+ mph windstorm for almost 24 hours long and shutting down power to over 130,000 homes for almost a week. We did not lose one shingle or even a bent one. I'm not bragging, just want to ensure that the tar on the bottom of shingles holds the shingles from doing what is shown in the photos with addition to apprentice gun nailing, Use a damn hammer if you can't set a nailer correctly..
Shingling was pretty simple, but I also did a lot of reading on the subject if anyone decides to try it. Use the right size nails to penetrate the wood and not bullet hole the shingles and hold off until weather can cure the package making it also support the building structure as well.
B Rad , NO THE SHINGLES CANT BE REUSED for several reasons , 1st reason is the labor required to pull apart & inspect each shingle would be as much as buying a new bundle , 2nd & most important reason to NEVER REUSE improperly attached SHINGLES that have blown off is structural integrity of the shingle , the shingles tossed around , bent & twisted by wind uplift could have breaks in the asphalt that can't be seen , there will be creases , which would cause leaks , and everywhere there used to be a nail in the blown off shingle is now a hole , hundreds of holes where water can flow directly into the building with a snow load , or driving rain , and lastly no local bldg code allows for the reinstallation of faulty installed shingles involved in a blow off , reusing the shingles would also void your home owners insurance coverage of the roof system .
I've had a journeyman card in roofing & waterproofing from local 149 Detroit for 32 yrs so I'm safe to comment on something I'm extremely well versed in , you've done 1 shingle job in your life , then you question the quality of these roofers workmanship , as well as their ethics , based on you reading a shingle wrapper ! that's bullshit , when you say " a quality contractor should be able to reuse the shingles " your negative comment is based on ignorance & not being an educated roofer , not experience , it's crap like this & your comment that reminds me of how everybody who can read a shingle wrapper thinks they can install roofing , roofing is a skilled trade requiring 3 yrs of trade school to acquire journeyman status for good reason .
+B Rad (RacelineCentral) Another reason not to use improperly installed shingles is the extra nail holes put on each shingle will cause premature aging and deterioration so the shingle will not last near as long and the roof will not age uniformly.

BUSTRCHERRI Most everything can be used again , but in this case not if you want your homeowners insurance to pay a claim costing upwards of $10,000 on the roof alone , the homeowners will also deny water damage to the interior of the home which could run into the hundreds of thousands of dollars , is that risk worth it ?

That's why I was always a hand nailer, no gun, I was just as fast anyway, if you're good enough you can be too, it's called quality work, take pride in your job is all, these guys with the guns try going faster and faster and this is the result, and I learned roofing from the back of a bundle, it's not hard, again take pride in your work and it'll show, good work guys
