The 'nutty' smell is probably walnut, which was used to extend ground coffee beans in '42. The Germans were doing a pretty credible job of interdicting a significant portion of the freighters traveling up the West Atlantic coast and many of the ships they sank were carrying coffee. With much of the male population getting drafted and industry ramping up, US coffee consumption went through the roof and the US had almost no native sources of coffee beans. As a wartime economy measure, in '42 and '43, it was necessary to use walnut and hazelnut husks to stretch the coffee bean supply.
I have no proof that B rations were issued with 'nut-coffee' but my grandmother often told stories about how the coffee 'wasn't right' until about '44 or so. As a historian, I noted that story and compare it to the U-boat offensive along the US and S. America Atlantic coasts. By 1944, with advances in ASDIC/SONAR and increased shipbuilding, the U-boat threat had been greatly reduced.
WoW good to know man

I was in the Army 66-69 and had the regular WWII field "C" rations every time we were in the field. They came in what I would describe as a packed small OD shoe box. Each box had a number of tins. I am trying to remember. There was always a main tin of something like ham & beans, beef, stew, or ham & lima beans. Each box had a tin of something like Boston bread or crackers & jam. Instant coffee, cream, tea, sugar, candy and whatever. Small Tabasco sauce bottles were always around. Every box had the P38 can opener and a small pack (6) cigarettes with matches. There was generally a generic metal trash can around that had water on the bottom and we put on a camp fire for a "hot" meal. The rations came in a large box with the individual ration boxes we frequently busted all of it open on to a poncho and threw the stew, beans, lima beans into the trash can of hot water and you just picked out what you wanted or what was left. Maybe we were hungry, but even though they were then over 20 years old; they were good... That was a long time ago...
Did any field rations ever include brachs root beer barrels?
Gordon Ramsay in 2021: "When was this made?"

The discoloration on the top biscuit isn't from mold or from the metal of the can. It's from the metal of the inside key sitting right on top of it. I'm surprised everyone missed that.
JonnyUFO good thinking.
It is also from the can cause the bottom biscuit had the most where it would be exposed the most to the metal
Would the key be made of tin as well? Because depending on if it's made from other metals he could get heavy metal poisoning right?
Mmm. Rust. Such a wonderful. Rust flavor. Kind of nutty and rusty at the same time. Almost with a lock jaw kind of taste.

Steve: Is that mold!? ah well, still probably going to grab another bite of it.
Steve, you are my hero.
He eats so much, he grew an immunity to rotten food.
GenuinelyJake the green stuff was to counter the prostitutes)
I doubt its mold, in 75 years all of it would be covered if that was the case, its probably something (butter maybe) that liquified and then hardened again.
Most mold is harmless, a few types of mold are dangerous, the one on the biscuits is probably the most common on orange and bread (a biscuit is basically bread), penicillin a common medicine.
I will be more concerned about the smell of almond or nuts of the coffee (this smell is the same as cyanide)
Could be some residue from the slightly corroded key, as it was lying on the bisquit.

The airtight can will keep it good for a while
so does that mean in retrospect that current canned food has the same shelf life? how long can you stretch that by best date?
We did a whole show around this topic in Germany, to prevent people from throwing away stuff at the "best before" date.. They have eaten a lot of canned stuff, and all cans that werent bloated, were okay. Sometimes tasty, but most of the time bland, as they seem to loose the flavour over time but not the edibility.
I bet those soldiers back in the 40's had no idea that people 75 years into the future would so cherish things that were just ordinary for them.
@Thystaff Thywill damn right
GMO is no different from conventional selective breeding except it's MORE PRECISE.
They grew up in the 30s when a full meal was far from ordinary, so even they probably held such things in high regard, not just because it was something wholesome they couldn't get back home, but also the taxpayer's way of showing support. At least that's how I see it.
Ob Fuscated this is true, but the highly processed ingredients that go into the finished ‘food product’ make for shite eating.
