I think the reason you may be picking up leather scents in those items is because most Germans soldiers used leather webbing, cartridge boxes, and other storage gear while the allies used cotton and synthetics for their gear. The chocolate and cigs would pick up the leather tannin and natural odor of the materials if they were stored in them for a period of time. I think Band of Brothers (book) mentioned that Earl McClung could "smell" the presence of Germans, esp. in damp weather. It was all the leather accoutrements the Germans donned or sported.

This is where your those cigarettes were made. The factory has a fairly interesting history and design. It was originally built by Jewish entrepreneur Hugo Zietz between 1907 and 09. He sold it 15 years later. Not sure if growing Nazi movement had anything to do with that. It stopped manufacturing cigarettes in 1953. Today its an office building. www.yenidze.eu/en/yenidze/

My grand grandfather once told my grandmother that when he&his mates were once encircled they got their supplies by plane, instead of food it was chocolade and cigaretts. He was in the Wehrmacht back then and survived the war
Andy B NICE
Andreas Bauer is he still alive?
_ _ Bro, of course not.
you immediately chilled out after the first cigarette lol did its job
13:10 "I wonder if they are still around?", finds out they are and buys 50 packs
"The Delta Dresden Factory...wonder of they're still around?" Cut scene to Feb 1945 allied bombers carpet bombing Dresden to a fiery mess.
Wonder if its still around, or maybe a square......
true... most underrated war crime
Apparently the building that produced these cigarettes is still standing. Currently an office building.
213 German civilians got stuck to death in melted chocolate that night.
@@TheJomeister Aw, c'mon, we were just trying to make sure the Germans were warm in the winter.
Wow, I never thought I'd get to see a WW2 Wehrmacht ration on here. I know the Wehrmacht were heavily reliant on field kitchens compare to other forces, which makes them seem all the more rare.
Great video as always, Steve!
i love when he eats this stuff... he gets shaky and amped up... hilarious
"can't put my finger on it" = amphetamines...lol
That would have been hilarious .
@Tim Allen he would have said it's caffeine
@@texasdeeslinglead2401 nah it’s not a joke, that chocolate is actually filled with meth
@@floo1465 its not, I don't know why the whole comment section seems to be making this claim/joke the german pervitin enhanced chocolate is something wholly different
@@floo1465 It's kola nut not meth.
I bought some modern Scho-Ka-Kola after watching these videos, its honestly VERY good chocolate. Totally recommend. It melts perfectly at mouth temperature, and is rich and flavorful. Really good stuff. I only eat it a couple of pieces at a time though, a whole can is like downing a whole a pot of coffee...
Wow. That stamp blew me away. I am impressed and jealous beyond all measure, you have no idea
In all seriousness, as a WW2 nut I love your videos. Just fascinating. Thankyou for some really fascinating ration tasters
Big compliments. The intro music with the pictures of german soldiers really gets me. gives me that Lucio Fulci Zombi Theme feeling.
Steve, your such a wholesome individual, I admire you thoroughly and would love to shake your hand someday.
You put Owen Wilson's "wow" to shame 😂 love your videos man. Much love!
Salute to all you Veterans out there. Thanks for your service. Appreciate the epic reviews.
It smells like invanding Poland

What's Poland?
Pakuri. You can't be serious
Bottled tap water marketed as spring water.
Nestle???
That caffeine shake is intense haha
The holy sacred word "nice" has been said by the might taster steve!! There will be rations for a 1000 more years!!
More wars than we could ever imagine will be fought until the concept of "conflict" could be completely removed from the psyche of man. So yeah, more rations to come.
Definitely one of my favorite of your vintage series videos, Steve!
Eats 76 year old chocolate and hands get real jittery 😬
Something bitter that I can’t put my finger on... yikes
Nazi amphetamines

When he said it was used for performance enhancing and had kola in the name I instantly assumed it had cocaine in it.
It is cocaine
When you start feeling anxious, waiting for a new video.

9:00- when the 300mg of caffeine kicks in. I agree on the weirdness of the old German stuff. I'm a coin collector, and I've a few prewar and wartime German marks I've found here and there. The wartime ones with the swastika give a bit of a chill. I keep them simply because of demand- I figure I have them as a collector piece. Someone else might want them for the ideology.
@Penguiins Ark It's what that symbol represents. I've seen people march under that banner in the US in 2020, and it simply is a reminder of what that can mean.
I have quite a few myself, none of them pre war though.
