  • In part two of this two part series, a kit of stainless steel lines is installed from the proportional controller to both rear wheels. Dorman kit 919-170 is shown being fitted into a 2000 Ford F150. The procedure will be similar on many Ford trucks and SUVs built from 1997-2003.

Appreciate the videos. I have a 2000 F150. rear brake line sprung a leak. I glanced through this video b4 buying my parts. my initial leak was in the mid section
by the gas lines and tank. Being a cheap ass, I attempted to just replace that section, buying 2 lengths of steal line and the center rubber line. this did not work. as I was working
my way back it quickly became apparent that the whole system was shot. The Dorman kit is all stainless and comes with the 2 wheel rubber lines. They should include
the Center rubber line, the new breather bolt, clips and copper washers but they don't and need to be ordered when you order the kit for sure. this is the least expensive
and safest way to fix the rear line no doubt. Trying this replacement without the kit would definitely cost a lot more, you would have to bend all your pipe and there is a good
chance you would be using the same steel lines from the auto parts store instead of Stainless and would be back doing the whole procedure over again in a few years.
    Thanks for the Vids!!

True, but all of the air will come out regardless. I usually gravity bleed all at the same time while I am cleaning up. So much easier and gets almost all of the air out. The bigger issue is dealing with bleeders on 20+ year old calipers. They will break off easily. I usually bleed at the banjo bolt or the line fitting on my customer's old vehicles.

Nice. I have a 99 - rust bucket indeed. All 4 lines in under three hours - pretty good. I was contemplating getting rid of it because of the general rust everywhere - won't pass inspection because of the rotted out rockers too and something banging nasty in the rear diff. Maybe I'll give it a go and save it - motor is still mint.

That's really quick especially if on the ground. Usually takes me an entire day to do 40 ft in a full size chevy truck. Partly because I make all the lines and flare all of the ends. My customers blow a brake line usually don't want to wait 2-3 days for a kit to arrive.

    • @valpro99
      @valpro99 5 років тому

Marc Smith well i had time to wait. The lines were a perfect match and fit. It started out just replacing the rear piece that runs along the rear axel. Once completed the next line up blew. I kept having to go up the line working my way toward the master cylinder as the next line leaked. Before i know it i ended up replacing all of them. It was prob a good idea anyway.

Thank you for the video. Easier to wrap my head around what I'm doing on this '00 Excursion. Dorman kit came in with 2 "shipping bends" in the rear intermediate line just like your f150's. You'd think a couple unions could go in place of the bends to help with installation 🤦🏼‍♂️🤷🏼‍♂️🤔

You're welcome. The shipping bends were a problem for me too. The rear line came out good, but I never could bend the front line to get it to fit right. I wound up putting in a copper-nickel line there. $$$ That line isn't cheap but it's easy to work with.

Reviewed the installation video once I found out I couldn't get the lines in the frame holders yet. Realized after securing both ends, the brake line was installed without making sure it went BEHIND the gas lines.....When I quit for the night, I was just about able to secure the lines by bending the brake lines around the gas lines in front of them so that they didn't touch, a real challenge bending the lines in the frame rail at the narrowest spot, not to mention a first time user of the bender. Will there be any risk of wear when it's not touching anything but in frame clamps on both sides of gas lines, the new lines have an outer casing making it tougher to get in the frame clamps, but it should further protect it from wear. Had a hard time fitting the back of the middle piece to the hose so I thought bending would have been faster..(IT WASN"T). This is after I did what you said would suck installing the middle frame rail piece....with both ends covered in plastic wrap, I didn't notice until taking the first end wrap off, that it was the wrong size for that end and that I had mixed up the line ends on install, you were right...it SUCKED!!! lol. I will be quitting after just the rear is installed, does that still require bleeding the front? Watched a few self bleed video, they all mentioned starting with the tire farthest from the proportion er. With Rear Right being furthest away, you are pretty convincing about starting on the rear left. Read a previous reply that said it really didn't matter.....or does it? The brake lines state there is a lifetime warranty...how would you warranty a wore brake line, ...directly from Dorman?

What were once cheap reliable products are now just cheap. Bought a Dorman water pump for my wife's 02 Intrepid, it failed after 700 miles, a Dorman exhaust manifold for my daughter's 98 Protege, it cracked after 3000 miles. Several products for my own 00 F150, all failed. Even had parts from Dorman arrive damaged or unserviceable, so I have stopped buying their products.

I only changed the rear lines last year and they are fine. However, when I went to install the front last month, one of them was bad. I was disappointed in both the bend and the flares on the front passenger side line.

I found the Dorman kit on Amazon, but others carry them under different brands. You have to be exacting about the features of your truck though. There must be five different F150 configurations...length of box, abs configuration, number of wheel lugs. ..etc.

    • @TheOriginalMechanic

You will likely need a different kit. They make a number of them based on cab arrangement and length of the box.
