"If you kids don't stop asking about Axe vs Kemper, I'm going to turn this car around and there will be no Cape Canaveral for anybody!"
😂
For someone interested in dialing in sounds from a few of their favorite guitarists and having the ability to quickly select them from presets which unit is the easiest to use. Just to clarify ( someone not into searching for the next best inspirational tone , instead just recreating/ close enough tone so they can play along with a few of their favorite albums connecting to an frfr speaker , home use)

4:47 tone and chords sound absolutely brilliant. Well done.
I have both the Kemper and the AxeFx3 and I find myself liking the Kemper more because I can dial in things faster. I can go from clean to crunch with the twist of a knob. I can mess with the reverb and delay with a twist of a knob. It's great! Still love the Axe 3, but love that Kemper too!
What a time to be a musician. All these amazing tools. I dream of owing an axe 3. But it's far too expensive for me at the moment.
Same here. Just switched to a Kemper from the fractal fm9. So easy to dial in a tone. Really don’t have to dial in anything at all
@@AC-pu2eh Just sold the FM9, and now very tempted for a kemper as well
@@AlexRafn give it a try. Such a completely different feel in my opinion
Great presentation. Too many geeks go on & on & on talking and no playing. All the while foaming at the mouth over this Kemper. This presentation was balanced, edited, which made this the best demo ive seen yet
I didn't even get that the toast comment was a joke until the end. 😂 I thought, right on man, little butter, little jam.
Great review and I think what you are saying about all these units being great is true. It's just a matter of what works best for you and what inspires you to write/play.
Congratulations Todd for buying a kemper, Great playing and sound amazing
This is just a loaner, good fun!
im using a marshall MG 50 FX with a behringer ultra metal um 300 distortion pedal and its got a great sound!!!
You got a Kemper man, sick looking forward to the vid. I'm a little jealous. 🤘
Just a loaner, good fun!
The only video of the non powered rack! And a great informative vid!! Well done subbed! My Kemper arrives in 2 days woohoo!
Great video Leon!
Cheers!
Totally agree with your assessment. I've got both the Kemper and an Axe FX 3 in our studio and my thoughts are the same.
Best of both worlds!
The raspy high end on some profiles is often because the 'definition' control is set too high, lowering it thickens up the profiles and takes away the rasp.
I wish you would A/B/C this with your Soldano Hot Rod 50 and your Marshall DSL50. And play all three through the same 4x12. That would be a video I would definitely want to see and hear.
Great tone & playing bro
The main reason I've seen pros use kemper is because they can profile their entire amp collection and take them all to the studio in a 3u case instead of a moving van haha. That's what Richard Kruspe from Rammstein has done. I also feel like if you don't have an amp collection the in box amps of the axe are better. I bought an axe fx because I wanted more variation in what I had to use without having a room full of pedals and amps but I've also been able to nail the heads I already had.
Basically the kemper is like one of those binders you can put 200 cds in and take wherever you want, if you don't have cds buy an iPod :)
Hahaha I love that comparison
Hi Leon, you got me with the Unboxing, classic. Brilliant Demo, my kind of Profiler, the dials seem to be easier to use for someone like myself, the closest I've been to a profiler is a Zoom G5, not quite the same as a Kemper lol.
Take care,👍👍👍.

Awesome! Scorpions, "Tease Me Please Me" at 5:23
Congrats and Well done and thanks for sharing brother!
Sounds great man! Would love to see you checking out the new Suhr PT15IR! It even uses 6V6 tubes which I think I heard you say you liked it more than EL84. Cheers mate
I would LOVE to try one of those amps. Very cool piece of gear.
Sp basically Kemper is straight to the point, what you see is what you get and Fractal is start from scratch to paint your picture only limited by imagination.
I have both the Kemper & an axefx II, love them both...I bet you made the Fractal guys/gals sweat a little with this video title Leon....!!
I’m finally warming to these; still using this?
Great toaster joke! Last night I was watching Mortal Engines a film that takes place in the future - toaster are collectables then. What a synchronicity!
Junkie XL did the soundtrack for that, love his videos about it
@@LeonTodd I just spun Junkie XL's Saturday Teenage Kick - I like the guitar! Hint of Beastie Boys to my ear.
Hi Leon. As a comparison between FM3 and Profiler Stage - which one would you choose (in Europe, the FM3 is 1300 EURO, compared to 999$ in the US). Which would you say sounds more realistic - I would use mainly: Plexi Stuff, Jubilee, Mesa's (2C+ or Lonestars) and some generic good cleans for blues, stuff.
Keep making video about kemper
7:52-7:56 reminded me of a song. Figured it out. Megadeth High speed dirt ! It was mostly the one cord and the tone. But I bet you could play the crud out of that song !
Nice demo thou btw ! If I ever have an extra grand sitting around im gonna have to pick this up.
Liked and subbed
✌ 😊
Is this the 2013 model?
Kemper and AxeFX III are different things for different jobs. Buy them both and you wont need to compare them!
Randy umm maybe if I had an extra four grand lying around...
whats the difference between kemper profiler and profiling amplifier ? thanks
I can always kinda hear the 800-1khz boost in the input EQ (that's how I would do it on the AFX3) on most profiles. Needless to say - Both are winning products. I just like a blank canvas to do what I want with and have a more modular system like the Axe. Most times people can't get their Axe Fx to sound good because of user error and not taking the time to really dial it in and it can be very confusing with all the modular parts and tweaking options given to the user.
End of the day - If you can't get your sound from a Kemper or Axe - it's probably because you haven't spent the time to really tweak and dial it in (rings truer for the AFX possibly).
One thing I really don't like about the Kemper is basically how it's like a fixed tone stack which cannot replicate the interactivity and quirks of a real amp's knobs after profiling. It'd be great if they were 1:1 with the amps after the profile is done.
Sums up my feelings exactly. The added input EQ isn't necessarily bad for mix ready tones but it would be nice to have it as an optional extra.
If you still have the Kemper - I've read that the refine process can dial some of it out. Might be the "definition" parameter; although, I think its a tilt EQ rather than a mid boost/cut. Might want to give that a twist.
Frankly you should buy a Kemper, throw up the AxeIII and just make more of YOU playing.
Would love to have more lesson and technical playing, more of you and frankly a better sound.
This videos just sound better than when you use other gear.
I’m not a Kemper fanboy (see my videos, I’m more a TH-U lover ;)
Dig that delay - like the edge on quaaludes 🤪
So you can get any sound out of that kemper rack mount right???
Good choice boy
Leon ive watched your Line 6 Native and HX video have you tried The Helix i would like to see you put one through its paces ..
I want to buy this profiler but where does it connect to? To a cabinnet or jus t regular speakers i just didnt understa d
Ever since I first saw the Profiler, I wondered the same thing I’ve wondered about every modeling unit since the early 2000s - which is if it can emulate the Tom Scholz product line. All the classic amp models will always have their place. Why aren’t more manufacturers trying harder to duplicate the Boston guitar sound?
Why? When would most players ever use the Boston guitar sound unless they were playing in a Boston tribute band? Which is ironically what Tom Scholz is up to these days. I love Boston. Bought the first album right after if came out and wore it out but I have never walked into a music store thinking "I wonder if they have an amp here that will give me a nasal overproduced tone?". That is a one trick tone.
That’s a rather narrow way of looking at it. I used to have a Rockman. X100 and only wished I had more control over the sound. Really wanted to use it in many of the same areas where people would otherwise use the Metal Zone or even the Rectifuer. I think you are giving it a bum rap.
Go and check out my Rockman tones matches for the AxeFX
i used to be a Fractal fanboy now im a Kemper fanboy.
Great vid man
Very nice!!! Greetings! I want to buy the same! Do you think it will be enough for all tasks !?
Nice video Leon! - which do you think is better for bedroom volumes? Fractal or Kemper? I think I know which is better for making toast...
Leon where are your high gain profiles ? on the rig exchange ? under your name ? cheers.
I wish you profiled the Soldano!!!
About that - search "LEON T" on the Kemper rig exchange and see what pops up ;)
Leon Todd I have a Soldano but don’t have a Kemper lol:) Honest question for you.... I normally mic my Mesa Mark and Soldano cabs and get great sound. I wanted to make things easier by going direct so I finally got to using my Rivera Rockcrusher Recording as a load box and ran into my CAB M. I found a cab and mic positions I like but in no way did it sound like a mic’d amp. More compressed and devoid of tonality (meaning the Mesa and Soldano sounded not as distinct). Sounded noisy and more fake (like a direct signal) in the mix. Any ideas? Plugins I tried (like the Fortin) sounded better! Maybe I should just get a modeler like the Neural Quad when it comes out and use that instead for quick tracks? Not sure what you think of the whole thing and if you’ve experienced the same thing.
@@epg2501 I've got an Axe-Fx and the Soldano and Mark Series models in particular are ridiculously good. I used mine to shoot IR's of my cabs and I use those so it brings a level of personalisation to the whole process. Makes recording a breeze.
To my ears, kemper is warmer than the axe/fx III but the axe/fx III does everything else so much better IMHO. Sold my kemper once I got my III.
i think a lot of the warmth people describe comes down to the fact that good profiles are already dialled in, whereas adding a simple amp and cab in the axe requires tweaking to get dialled in. The Axe-III Atomica High or Friedman BE C45 at stock settings just blow me away.
Out of your mind, deaf.
Randall Sandmann I have a Kemper now, had an AX8. Like them both, but recording is my priority, and Fractal was significantly better. Ended up with ear fatigue from the Kemper. I’m no tech guru so to be fair there may be some settings that could solve the problem.
But I did minimal tweaking on both. In my car I could crank and enjoy my Fractal recordings, but not Kemper.
Please !!!profile those amazing tones you dial on your amps.! 🙏🏻
Leon Todd, you should review S-Gear. Really want to get your tone guru opinion. To me Kemper > S-Gear > Ax8 > AxeFxIII (yes sound less good as ax8, but it’s just because Ares is still young I guess) then Neural DSP, Mercuriall plugins and Helix is pure shit.
I tried it a few months back and wasn't too taken with it which is why i didn't up reviewing it. I'd be happy to revisit it if there's interest though.
Hey Leon, I've pretty much made up my mind on getting an AX8 after watching countless comparison videos and almost all of yours. I'm a huge delay fan. PLEASE tell me I can get a delay sound similar to this dark grain one you were playing through the Kemper on an AX8. I would truly appreciate any info you can give me bro. You rule bro!
Might have to build a studio rack with everything in it, Kemper, ax3 and a helix. Lol
I like this idea :D
Thank you!!!!!!!
can I run a bass and a guitar at the same time through one kemper?
I don't think so
Could you review the headrush unit Please? I have just got a kemper, but im considering swapping for the headrush.... would valuw your opinion. ;)
I went the Headrush route because of the processing clarity of it...and have an elaborate parellell pedal setup in its FX loop... I record directly into Abelton from the HR... I'm more than happy with it... :)
So.... in theory.... I could take my profiling amp to music stores, and steal the sound of every amp in the store for free. And basically walk out with several free new rigs lol
Yes, but why stop there? Profile your friends amps, sneak out onto shows and profile bands entire rigs, profile your Playstation!

Simple question: Does the Kemper do tone matching?
The whole "Profiling" process essentially selects an underlying amp model, shoots an IR and applies a tone match.
Kemper vs the axe effects. Is like saying saying Ford is better than Chevy or Chevy is better than Ford.
Kemper = Taking picture of a portrait with a camera
Axe FX = Painting the portrait yourself
I like that
That being said, I'd definitely get a Kemper sometime in near future.
What about line 6 lol
Kemper = taking a picture/scan, Axe FX = digital painting , Analog = Oil painting. The way I see it lol.
That being said everyone can't be an artist...Some guys just want to enjoy and appreciate what has already been done...Different paths to enjoy beauty!
How many instruments can go into the Kemper rack? I can't seem to find the answer to this anywhere
howcome intheblues was very loud but yours didnt make a noise when you did it
Nice, bloody expensive though
Soooooooo overpriced for how basic it is.
OK cool but I hope you always stay loyal to Fractal!!!
I'm team axe. ⛏
Prime Dog kemper all day
@@jessetate9701 buy one and shut the fuck up about the other lol, that's what I always say. At least that's what I've said since I bought an Ax8 a couple months ago.
Travel with a USB stick ..
Yep, that is what Jeff Loomis and Keith Merrow do ..
Just rent the Kemper unit wherever you gig ..
How convenient is that?
"That's not a noif!"
Love KEMPER. To me it sounds better than AXeFx III.
i own the kemper and the axe fx ll mark ll and for me it´s the complete opposite. the axe fx is way ahead in my opinion. the sound is a lot fuller and the effects sound a lot better. also you have more options (for example in the kemper the reverb is always in the last spot)
i found this explanation for the sound being fuller (i think it was by cliff himself):
They do use IRs. They use 256 point IRs augmented with parametric EQ. This is easily demonstrated by examining the data structure of the profile and by measuring the device (or by using their IR converter which converts long IRs to 256 point IR plus EQ). What they say is "we use something more advanced" or something like that. By "more advanced" they mean they augment the IR with parametric EQ. However they must augment the IR with parametric EQ because the IR is too short to reproduce low frequencies accurately. The frequency resolution of an IR is proportional to its length: the longer the IR the better the resolution. To accurately reproduce a guitar cabinet requires at least 1000 points from my research. (Note: I'm using the term "parametric EQ" as a substitute for IIR filter since most people don't know what an IIR filter is.)
This technique has been around since the early days of modelers (I believe the Pod 2.0 was the first to do this). The impetus for this is that it uses much less processing power since the amount of processing power required is directly proportional to the length of the IR. A 256 point IR plus, for example, an 8-band EQ can be equivalent to a 512 point IR but uses less processing power. The downside is the phase response isn't the same but that is usually inaudible.
In their specific case the amplifier output frequency response and cabinet frequency response are combined into a single IR plus EQ since they aren't measured separately. See my MIMIC whitepaper for more information on frequency response, etc. You can make assumptions about the amplifier output frequency response in order to separate it from the cabinet response. In their case I believe they assume there is a 6 dB resonance at 125 Hz plus a 6 dB highshelf (incidentally this is the same power amp frequency response model that the Marshall JMP-1 used albeit using analog filters). For many amplifiers this is a reasonable approximation.
The Axe-Fx II IRs are 2048 sample (eight times the resolution) and don't require augmentation.
Stainless Steel WTF!?!? You’re kidding right? 😉
Thé fact is that I owned AX8 for years, then AxeFX3 for two month before going back to my Kemper and S-Gear for plugin.
Axe FX simply cannot have the feel of a real tube amp compared to Kemper.
Funny that profiling is the best solution to recreate Amp+Cab+Mic sound, way better than Fractal modeling despite using cheap DSPs.
Another thing is that kemper users don’t even want any new Kemper Hardware because for them it’s perfect.
Even effects are cool but they are a little less good than FAS ones, BUT drive stomps are better than on AxeFX.
They only thing that count is = how do you love the sound of your device and it’s clearly the best sound I ve heard from Leon...
Sur he’s gonna love it and keep it.
Was it just the sound or did Kemp have other advantages
Dan Brian Only the sound because everything else is shity, game boy screen , NO editor for Mac (or PC), and no audio interface, just analogic or SPDIF...
But despite it’s an old device, with buttons and menus not very convenient, the sound is unique and the only one that recreate a perfect amp feel.
You'd want to back up that USB. 🖖
I really don’t see the comparison to AxeFX....they do different things better as in aside from amp profiling the AxeFX does everything better
This!
Plus one!
Yes the FX is far better at covering up the lack of talent 😬 Nothing like plugging straight into a good amp without effects and the Kemper can give you any great amp!
Axe doesn't do better on price or creating a real amp tone. It also puts you in this weird club of people who feel inferior constantly and feel the need to say what they have is better. Which it isn't.
Exactly. Axe fx 3 is superior among the others. Profling is not a problem it's just a matter of EQ
Sounds as pretty as my Axe III, but too damn many buttons. I'll stick w/ Fractal.
I was looking into all of these products, but to tell you the truth after countless videos and presentations it all still sounded fake and plastic to me. Then I saw your ADA mp1 video the other day and it fucking blew me away...that thing butchered all of these. It's like toy r us in comparison to it. Unbelievable how much character and balls that preamp has.
The MP-1 is a pretty sweet ride
;-D
I believe the axe fx 3 sounds better 😆
😁 light years ahead 😁😂🌌🌌🌌🌌🌌🌌🌌🌌🌌🌌
I hear and therefore believe the exact opposite😃. But I am pretty sure in a few years AXE FX 7 will convince me and will be equally good as good old Kemper Version I. With that release speed of fractal that should not take too many years.
But what I am really waiting for - I have to admit this - is a FAS AX9. That would be my unit ... If Kemper is not any faster and releases a mind blowing Kemper II floor unit.

Cj Naotda you are correct
As I say at the end, they're different tools for different players with different goals. We all like to tell ourselves that the choice we made is the right choice, when in the scheme of making guitar music noises it doesn't really matter. Let's all go do some practice.
