This project has been overwhelming at times, rewarding at others... either way I'm learning a ton doing this income property renovation. I've had quite a bit of unexpected detours along the way keeping me from making as many videos as I want, so I decided to make the most of it and make my first vlog!! this is something I've wanted to try for a long time, so hopefully it came out decent!!!

MODERN BUILDS
Hi, My name is Mike Montgomery and I'm a MAKER; a designer, builder, and full-time content creator. Accessibility is my focus with Modern Builds, not simply accessibility of designs, but accessibility in materials, information, and projects themselves. I've focused on creating furniture and DIY projects that are simple enough that any beginner maker can accomplish, yet interesting enough that any expert might be inspired. Building and making is becoming less and less of an exclusive hobby and profession. My goal is to reduce that separation even further.
I decided to make my first vlog once I found out what happened to the sidewalk pour we did a couple months ago!!! let me know what you think and if y'all enjoy the vlog I'll make more!!
Love the vlog style!! Really shows your thought process!! Good work!
I love this style! I hope you keep doing these! Super fun and interesting.
Hire out the concrete work
This was an awesome video! I really like the house renovation focus. I like seeing in-between.
Would honestly beige a series like that old home makeover show
Please use the vlog style for the rest of your diy content.
That hair reveal is giving the same energy as the Finn hair reveal in Adventure Time.
Loving the vlog. Keep it going!
Your hair! I just realized we never see your hair.
You are so handsome! Stop with the hat!
I thought the same!!
Yeah!! It’s beautiful!!
Yeah, so shiny😍 I enjoyed it😂
@@John25. its probably just to keep his hair from getting on his face
Pavers are my vote because if it gets uneven in the future, it will be an easier fix. You could also create a different shape like a bit of a curve.
seconded!
Wraparound raised boardwalk.
Honestly this was such a refreshing video to see! It felt more of a POV And also seeing a glimpse of how modern builds is made . I strongly suggest doing more vlogs when you can! As a loyal 2+ year viewer , It was really entertaining to watch!
I enjoy all of your videos, but this format was an absolute blast! Seeing your process was really, really cool, and I feel like we know you a little better, too.
Loving the blog style for those of us who watch for the overall house progress, and not just the individual project “how to” style videos! Also I think pavers would be way better than another concrete slab
Love seeing the thought process! Have you considered pulling the sidewalk away from the planters to have a small ground level bed between the sidewalk and planter? It would give room for formwork
Thanks for all the positivity, we need more happy-to-learn moment's in the world. So very happy that you have the opportunity to be a homeowner and that you share your journey. You're a bright spot Mike. Keep it up!
man, you've been an absolute soldier by tackling this huge project on your own. the results speak for themselves! keep up the good and hard work!
Authentic and entertaining… a lot of work that goes into your vlogs.
Mike without his hat is 🔥
Unrecognizable 🧢
I honestly thought he would be a shiny top under the hat!
Mike tell us about the truck, financing for the house, plans for the bigger lot, subdivide? Any plans to being back modern maker podcast? Plans on going back to CA?
just adding to the "you have hair" comments! Great video!
Been watching you since your skooli conversion, what a guy! I’ve yet to jump into my first home DIY project, but still get inspired by you every time. Could you reminisce in a Q&A on where you were vs. where you are now? Keep growing Mike!
I love that you accept the comments ❤then make the change . Learning only makes you better ❤ love the idea of the pavers for the the walkway it ads to the charm of your home 😊😊
love the vlog style with some behind the scenes footage too! can't wait to see the tile job in the bathtub and of course, the new concrete slab!
This vlog style is great. Longer so we get a bit of a more detailed description of what you are doing and how you are going to approach it. I have rehabbed two houses so far. Looking for my next one now.
Speaking from a Teacher's POV here - leaving your mistakes and brainstorms in the video is excellent as these are likely things other people have done. It shows them A.) Mistakes happen and B.) How they can avoid / revise their methods in the future!
Personally, I would hire it out. On another note, I would make the path wider. It really makes a difference. If someone is carrying bags or walking with someone, you have to walk behind them or in the grass. I know it's not a big deal but normally sidewalks and paths are generally too narrow. To me there should be enough space for two people to walk comfortably side by side without stepping in the grass. Just my opinion. Love your work. Keep it up.
Your hair is gorgeous, you are showing up and showing out with the reno. I like your choice for new walkway, I think it will be beautiful and it will be good for drainage near the house.
Enjoyed this episode. Your successes and your bumps. I vote for big stone pavers. Think it gives an opportunity for some creative landscaping later in front of this big white planter boxes.
Gary, for the win! Also, Mike and your luxurious hair! Ps magnet and sting? Depends on what you have in hand with the crawlspace. The vlog format is a certified banger as well!
I didn’t realize you were in the OBS Ford club. Perfect truck for home projects while still looking super cool in the streets
Love the conversational “4th wall” style you trialed in this vlog Mike. It had a level of conspiracy that was totally engaging. Thanks as always for the generosity of the content and the consistent quality of your work. Loved it. Much appreciated. C
This is 100% what I want out of this renovation stuff! So cool to see behind the scenes!
Feeling that bit drop. The struggle is real!
We've been renovating our 60 year old home for the last 7months. Your videos have been super helpful - especially on the flooring install. Thanks! I owe you a beer if you're ever in the Nashville area!
If I were you I would 100% hire this out!! You’ve tried doing it yourself twice, it failed twice (happens to the best of us, it’s time to be reasonable/humble so you can spend your time on work that hasn’t been attempted/done already. I like the large format paver idea or possible a cedar walkway that matches the porch beams.
Hey Mike, for the future have a look into a mix of water and SBR for bonding different layers of cement/ concrete together.
Keep it up bro you convinced me to remodel my man cave. I like that you do it on a level people can relate. Thank bro
Pavers would be the safer diy option for sure. Even if something goes wrong with pavers it should be easier to fix than a full slab. You're doing great and this vlog style is pretty good and cool and if filming and/or editing is easier than its definitely a good option when things get overwhelming
Vlog is great - really love it. 2x to 3x as many vlogs like this to "do-it-yourself" vids is perfect.
Thank you for giving us a peek behind the scenes with the vlog. There is a lot of work that goes into producing great content. I was thinking pavers would be great instead of a sidewalk. Thank you Gary for helping and please don't let Mike use your tractor anymore. Lol. Just kidding. But did you see where Mike did a boo boo. Hahaha.
Mike turning a multitasking man! I can imagine how frustating can be to see something broken after a short time, but the positive side is that you can fix it, well, or redo it like this case. Thx for sharing it too!
Appreciate the correct amount of time you’re taking for this project. It’s not great for video content but it’s the right way to remodel. Have watched another UA-camr half ass an entire house just to keep a video schedule
You can use the concrete rocks/boulders to build a garden wall for a rock garden…xeriscape it to look like a Mediterranean garden.
You are doing amazing! Thanks for sharing your struggle, and mental battle for positivity. You make it look easy most of the time, but I find this quite honest and relatable!!
"Almost gave up... just kiddin'" - awesome.
When you build out the rock pavers, be sure to put down weed & grass killer, lay down cardboard &plastic painters' tarp (something at least 6 mil), or you will have a fun new maintenance project of pulling weeks weekly. Tried to avoid those steps with ours and had to go back and redo it
I know it sounds silly but don't take for granted the time with your dad. That's so cool you guys get to bond while doing what you love and making money! You'll look back and remember these times. Enjoy brother!
watching a clumsy person fully commit to a renovation is cathartic. I love it
Thank you and thank you so much mom and Gary ❤❤❤❤❤
You should do a stone patio!! And nice light grey with a dark charcoal border! Would make the house and the white pop!
Nice vlog. Really enjoyed hearing you just talk about stuff rather than the more scripted/condensed episodes you make. Ditto on the hair reveal! :) Hang in there on the ass kicking feel. Houses do that to you whether you are flipping them or just living in them long term. Projects always take longer or cost more than you estimated or want them to. I've really enjoyed seeing your house projects progress and eventually finish. Great job!
At least you're fixing things, instead of just covering it up as a lot of flippers may do. Tractor is awesome!
Protip on home depot rentals. 4 hours is the shortest period you can rent tools. So if you rent something with just under 4 hours left until the store closes, you get it until the next morning.
If you pour the sidewalk yourself you can make the normal 2x4 forms on the sides that you can. Against the wall you can use expansion board between the concrete and the wall. It's a foam like board to keep the concrete from cracking against the wall. You can use a chalk line to mark out where you want the concrete to be against the wall. Sometimes we'd even glue it against the wall so we wouldn't have to worry about it moving during the pour. Then you'd want to have expansion joints at least every 10ft but you can do smaller squares if you want. You can either cut them in with a saw after or use a hand tool called a jointer to cut them out while the concrete is still wet.
You could totally do it yourself. The job is so small that hiring it out would probably not meet the minimum that some contractors have. Especially since you already did the hard work of tearing it out yourself. I'd look into pricing on getting a truck to show up with 1 or 2 yards and just make it even easier on yourself not having to mix the bags. Might be a little more expensive but you'd be saving yourself a lot of effort and that cost can't be ignored.
What are you doing with your Joshua Tree property while you’re working on the flip house?
I loved the comment below of doing a wood deck or boardwalk. You could match your wood accents already on the porch.
Love your content man and these bits you add showing us the human side it speaks volumes to us home DIYers in the same shoes. Personality I recon sometimes you are best to start from scratch than to patch up and don't beat yourself up about it failing it's a high traffic area after all!
I liked the vlog. It flowed better. Seemed more natural. Not forced or perfect. Tell your dad, Gary, Semper Fi. Noticed his tat. When did he serve? What was his MOS?
As someone who poured concrete for 4 years, you would save yourself a lot of effort with a full size jackhammer. The weight and length of the bit make it way easier to tear stuff out.
Hey man! You are doing this almost all by yourself and doing a great job.
This is getting meta and I'm here for it!!
Great job! Enjoyed it!
Questions:
1. When is your end goal date? Like how many months did you anticipate?
2. Have you been in touch with the Modern Maker guys in their builds? I know Ben is doing his hotel and wonder if there's overlap.
3. Are you doing any more work/videos with Home Depot?
Looks very frustrating and rough. Good luck! You're doing great
Dude, I'm here in OKC with all the concrete tools (and tractor/backhoe for removals) give a shout if you need a hand
This video was epic. I’d say do more clog style videos when you can! Enjoyed watching
Vlog was a good idea. Another one would be good.
The pavers might look awesome, also loving the vlog style
I'm 100% team pavers! I think they would look a lot more beautiful than a concrete slab. Could potentially even match the aesthetic of the planters. Also, I love the vlog style!
I loved this vlog. I now appreciate just how much work goes into this, on top of the reno! ✊🏾
I had the same concrete issues. I was SUPER EXCITED to watch your repair. I was going to try to fix mine the way you fixed your concrete. but then your fix failed. 😢 So sorry!!! But now I'm a little 😳😳😳 nervous.
the entryway would look modern with oversized rectangle pavers surrounded by small pebble stones. super pro!
annnnnd i just finished the rest of the video 🤣awesome!
The crack was there in the first video. You can see it on the other vid at the 2:55 min mark. The resurfacer wasn't strong enough to keep that together. It might have been a better idea to chip away at the crack, reapply concrete to that area, test for strength, then resurfacer. I don't think you needed to redo the whole slab. But it does make for more content. So, thank you!
I barely recognize him within the cap and glasses. 🔥 🔥 🔥 feel free to do more vlogs Mike
Another option is a patterned brick paver walkway going up to the stairs.
I like this format Mike. And I would've retrieved the spade bit too!
Definitely like the vlog Mike! Good job!
Loving the vlog format.
Love the farther son stuff…. Cherish it….. it really sux when there gone…..!!!
Vlogs are pretty cool dude keep continue on ur channel
Like the vlog you should do more like this
Really cool to see some behind the scenes stuff. Looking forward to seeing the sidewalk. 3rd time lucky!
more vlogs! I really enjoyed this style
Love this format! I haven't watched a bunch of your videos recently, mostly because they're projects i don't really plan on tackling. I would totally watch more vlog videos in between the instructional ones though!
Also the behind the scenes and seeing the general actual timeline of the flip project would be interesting, as you don't really get the sense of time passing in the instructionals, and the fact that I'm sure you actually jump between projects while waiting for drying time or materials.
I'll be on board for more BTS vlogs!
Been following for years man and love your content!
to replace sidewalk, i'd go with randomsized concrete rectangles. that would fit well with the MCM style of your ranch house
Dad looks like a proud Papa! 👍🏾
This more lose freeflow vlog format really complements the channel main videos.
The thought of having more content from you is exciting man, please keep this up, seeing both your losses and wins is extremely entertaining 🫶
Hello Mike's dad! I'm looking forward to seeing this task, which I know you'll slay! Many blessings ❣️
Oh boy, should have just got a new spade bit. The crawl sequins reminded me of one of those spelunking videos.
yes that shower system of water in water out (Older system to current methods) Is definitely work haha next time try a sealed method! with a FloFX Bonding flange, the FloFX roll of waterproof membrane, or laticrete hydroban membrane (I personally used this one) for my shower pan and then just used cement board for the walls sealed with their cement board mesh tape and max-lite thin set with hydroban liquid applied membrane, can also use aqua defense or redgard(don't use redgard pls), you only have to slope once with the deck mud to the bonding flange.
about the walkway DIY! Pavers are cool but gotta make sure you have a weed barrier, if you want to just do full concrete with broom finish DIY! rent a mud mixer, or lmk I'll let you borrow my mud mixer it's a continuous mixer for cement its awesome just drop the bag ontop of a hopper that has some sharp spikes and it cuts the bag.
I really like the format of this! Can we get a few more?
How about Gravel?? And then come back to it when you have more time. Keep your chin up Mike.
I poured a new slab next to several older slabs and used a foam gasket for building sills to isolate the slab from its neighbors during the pour. Owens Corning makes a sill seal called ProPink Comfort Seal and they sell it at Home Depot. It is a very thin compressible foam that you can put against the planter and stairs, then pour your slab, let it dry, and pull it out again. It worked well for me.
What's up with the Modern Maker Podcast? Perfect update topic on your next Q&A 👌
I feel like the pavers might offer a good DIY option thats on-vibe with your overall renovation. The sidewalk idea seems a bit dated? Pavers could be cool!
LOL.. dropped this comment before the video ended. I see you agree with me on the pavers: those pinterest photos are great inspiration!
Man it's been awesome watching this whole series. You deserve a break, just hire a guy to come out, fill it in and move onto the next project. No shame in that.
It was great to see vlog style. Love a bit of behind the scenes to learn more video techniques.
Definitely a handful this flip but I’m sure you have learnt many things which will come in handy in the future.
add one or two feet of grass between the planters and the sidewalk and then you should be able to do what you wanted yourself 🙂 PS, your dad seems great. I'm sure he is very proud of you.
That was a solid watch.
Kudos to you for going under there to get that drill bit. I would have just cut my losses and gotten a new one, because no way I'm crawling around in that tight space! How do you even turn around in that cramped space?
Big fan of the vlogs Mike! You killed it
Man you have my dream truck. Love seeing it in the videos! Fun little bonus lol
Really liked this style video!!
I like the pavers idea.
Loved the vlog/behind the scenes!
There's the update I was expecting... a little earlier than I expected but that skim coat was bound to pop. Good on ya bud. Top tier tuber.
I dig this vlog series format. More, please.
Love this vlog Mike - keep up the great work on the home!
