I just decided to hear "Lay down (candles in the Rain)" by Melanie and found out that she passed away in January 24, 2024. How sad, she was so talented and such a cute girl she reminded me of myself I also still wear my hair the same as hers. Those were wonderful days that I'll never forget. My condolences to her children and family. RIP Melanie.
Today is 2/4/24 and I just found out that Melanie passed. I am surprised it didn't make a lot of news, print/radio/TV. I am a news junkie and I would have missed this if I wasn't watching CBS Sunday Morning.
Hoy 20 de marzo del 2024 y me acabo de enterar del fallecimiento de Melanie. Grandes recuerdos de esta excelente cantante. Donde estes descansa en paz.
May ‘70……just got back from Vietnam where I had bought a mini cassette recorder. The first song I recorded off off my dad’s car radio was “Lay Down.” I played it over and over again. It was mesmerizing. Still have the recorder and the mini cassette. Thank you for your song and talent Melanie. RIP.
This video should be restored and re-release to MTV, VH1 and the song to the pop charts. Its speaks the same message now as it did in 1970 54 later. Rest in Peace Melanie. Gone but forgotten. Your legacy and music lives on like "Candles In The Rain". 🕯🕯🕯
MTV and vh1 don't play music video anymore. I think your comment meant to post to 1991. Or, alternatively, we need to bring back MTV. Yes, I think I like that better. Maybe they could simulcast to the radio. I'd pay a wee bit to have that option.
It was 1971, I was 31 years old, a low almost suicidal point in my life after I got out of the service. I drove up to Topanga Canyon above Malibu and stopped at the Corral. A young lady asked me to play this song on the jukebox. We chatted and in the end she changed my life. Strange but true. Joanne McDonald....here's to you where ever you are!
We're about the same age. I first heard this song as a sophomore in high school. Our General Business teacher took us on a field trip of exploring & purchasing at stores in the city. I heard this song for the first time (even though this was 3 or 4 yrs. after it came out) and I don't think I heard it since.I have no idea why that is, but I found it tonight. ❤
I was 17 when this song came out and my best friend was 19. She became my sister in law that year and we were best friends/SILs for 48 years until her untimely death from cancer several years ago. I can still see us in my powder blue VW Beetle, our hippie hair flying singing this song at the top of our lungs. RIP Susie and Melanie.
I am at Melanie's house today connecting a home backup generator! I was born in 71 and never knew her music till today. In her 70s now, she is still singing! Very nice lady to talk with. Glad I had the pleasure to meet someone that touched so many hearts with her nusic.
I wasn't born when this song was released- I heard it in early March 2020. About two weeks later we went into lockdown, and for the rest of the year my life was absolutely turned upside down. This song was a candle in the dark that year. I'm grateful for those in my life that kept the dark away that year. RIP Melanie - you will be missed.
First heard Melanie on cassette while out camping at Ayers Rock Easter 1973. Half asleep, around a midnight campfire.Gazing up at the Milky Way blazing in the night sky. Melanie singing Ruby Tuesday. Still thrills my old heart. Every time. Rest in Peace, beautiful Melanie. So very very sad❤️🖤
I was 9 years old when this song came out. It changed everything I ever believed about life. Her songs will echo through my mind forever, as well as her tender, fierce, stance on social injustices. My heart breaks❤
I am so proud to be from this generation. Fly your freak flag high. There will never be music like this again reflecting love and peace. The hippy in me will never die. What a great time to be alive.

I remember this powerful song in the early 1970s, after I had gotten out of the Army in 1970 and had gone through turbulent times in the following years. This song was a comfort to me during that period. RIP Melanie.

50 years later, and every time I play this, I get emotional and the goosebumps come. Melanie was a force of nature, and she just transcends EVERYTHING in this. Her energy, her presence just reaches out and grabs hold of you. YOU WILL LISTEN. Well, yeah.
I've loved this song my entire life. I'm 40. When I heard it on on R.G. I came here to see who has just discovered this song... I love seeing when people discover amazing song from the past. Enjoy!! This is REAL music. ✌🏾
This video speaks of love beauty and defiance. The juxtaposition of Melanie this young vibrant and most naturally beautiful woman singing her heart out surrounded by the trappings of Industrial destruction is one of the most powerful act of defiance I have ever see. I say this as a 70 year old man who spent at least 50 years of my life as a political activist! We need more people like Melanie in the world.
"The juxtaposition of Melanie this young vibrant and most naturally beautiful woman singing her heart out surrounded by the trappings of Industrial destruction is one of the most powerful act of defiance I have ever see." Excellent observation.
add Joni Mitchell as well. Young ladies that were so observant of their era & spoke to us through their music. as an old fart dare I say, they were more aware of events than the younger people today, Just saying.
I just read Melanie died at age 76 .. 10 yrs older than me? LOL.. but I see and hear a beautiful woman singing songs that this 12-13 yr. old remembers every word RIP Melanie and Thank U for the memories
My Dad passed away last year and I was so incredibily heartbroken. He was such a big fan his whole life that he even wanted to name me Melanie which my mom refused. When i heard that she died I just thought: have fun Dad. Listen to her music. After he died, I actually thought that I could never listen to her again, but actually, now it is comforting me. He is not alone and neither am I.
I was 18 years old when this song came out I was mostly into Led Zeppelin, Cream, Santana, Beatles, Rock etc. But I bought this Record because at that time period, it spoke Powerful Words!! TIMELESS CLASSIC!!!
It's hard to believe that this song charted nearly 50 years ago. No auto tune, no lip syncing in in front of a pack of backup singers and dancers. A singer-songwriter rather than an entertainer.
RIP Melanie ~ your music was a very positive influence on me. Plus, on Tuesday I took a walk and out of the blue Brand New Key came to me and I sang it in my head over and over. Now I learn it was the same day you died. Thank you for the gifts from your music that you gave us all.
This song came out the year my dad was over in Vietnam in the Army. I was eleven years old. Hearing it now still takes me back to that time. What a time that was. The 60's and early 70's. There were so many insanely wonderful and ungodly awful things going on at the same time!! It was absolutely insane compared to today. There will never be another time like that time. If you weren't alive back then, believe me -- you really missed something, I'm sorry to say.
It was 2 years ago that you made that comment.. John Deere.. Today it seems the time of INSANE has returned. Both wonderful yet across the street the Ungodly things. I hope your Dad is doing well.
John Deere to honor your father; the ones that really bled in each other's wounds and shared the same disease were the Vietnam Veterans. At the end of the movie Apocalypse Now where you hear the voice saying "The Horror The Horror" well that's about the truth. G-d bless your father and G-d bless his family.
this is one of those songs that no matter where you are on this Earth you stop what ever you are doing for the next 3 minutes and 27 seconds and just chill out
I'm so glad my dad passed down his love for Melanie to me. I'm 40, and I adore this song. Melanie's vibrato is to die for. I was privileged to be able to see her live in Adelaide several years ago. RIP Melanie.
Buried my niece today needed to be uplifted between the tears and the inspiration.this song brings the comfort i so despartly need. Rest in peace monica always in my heart
@@sludge4125 Every generation thinks their music was the greatest and nobody else will make it as good. My parents thought that the big band sound with Sinatra etc was the best, we thought the 60's & 70's was the best, my kids think theirs is great. We are all protective of our youth & the experiences & music we grew up on.
@@sludge4125 Well I totally agree with you on that. Just because I am not a fan of country music or classical or rap doesn't make them garbage or terrible, it just means it is not my taste. My own son is not a big R&R fan, as I am, but went with me to see Springsteen years ago anyway, He loved his energy & power in concert, even though he didn't know most of the songs. The other thing I always laugh at is people saying that growing up the 60's & 70's was the greatest era ever. It was in some things, we who lived through it feel, but people only pick the good & forget the racism, the riots, the assassinations & Vietnam.
You know how people hold their lighters up at rock concerts? That spine-tingling ocean of tiny flames expressing a peak moment of love and respect and unity? .... that was Melanie ❤️

Salutations.

Excellent observation.
add Joni Mitchell as well. Young ladies that were so observant of their era & spoke to us through their music. as an old fart dare I say, they were more aware of events than the younger people today, Just saying.
LOL
And now she's moved on. Sing a song in heaven, Melanie. You were the real deal. 1947 ~2024.
I was 18 when this song hit the radio stations all across the USA and I just loved it, so thank you Melanie for being part of my younger years.
I just read Melanie died at age 76 .. 10 yrs older than me? LOL.. but I see and hear a beautiful woman singing songs that this 12-13 yr. old remembers every word RIP Melanie and Thank U for the memories
I saw her perform at Woodstock when I was 10 years old. She was great! Her music was fantastic and she will be missed! RIP!
Kinda mad I wasn't introduced to her earlier. Been listening to her albums all week. Def became one of my fav artists.
Sorry for the loss of your dad 😢
I was 18 years old when this song came out I was mostly into Led Zeppelin, Cream, Santana, Beatles, Rock etc. But I bought this Record because at that time period, it spoke Powerful Words!! TIMELESS CLASSIC!!!
It's hard to believe that this song charted nearly 50 years ago. No auto tune, no lip syncing in in front of a pack of backup singers and dancers. A singer-songwriter rather than an entertainer.
Nostalgia is one of the greatest enemies of the truth, boomer.
🤦♂️🤦♂️🤦♂️🤦♂️🤦♂️🤦♂️🤦♂️🤦♂️
PS-She has no rhythm.
@@sludge4125 Brilliant troll.
@@jonathantubman5636 Thanks, sweet cheeks.
Actually, she IS lip syncing in the film.
@@pegbars
Only daydreamers believe it was not lip syncing...
She ,s is one great singer that were gonna miss but she left us great music of her so we can keep
RIP Melanie ~ your music was a very positive influence on me. Plus, on Tuesday I took a walk and out of the blue Brand New Key came to me and I sang it in my head over and over. Now I learn it was the same day you died. Thank you for the gifts from your music that you gave us all.
Awesome comment. I always loved her music too.
I can't watch this without tears...
+John Deere - I remember this time real well, I was 16 yrs old when this song came out along with many other great ones.
you nailed it my friend
It's starting now...
G-d bless your father and G-d bless his family.
this is one of those songs that no matter where you are on this Earth you stop what ever you are doing for the next 3 minutes and 27 seconds and just chill out
Always was a stirring song. Great one from my high school days.
What a song! Always loved Melanie.
🌞🌜🕯🕯👏🙌😘 the world truly needs this song right now.
January 23, 2023_ here listening to Melanie and the Edward Hawkin Singers. A powerful song that still relevant and still resonates.
From an era when songs meant something.
Amazing voice. First heard the song 55 years ago, it still gives me the chill listening to it
I'm so glad my dad passed down his love for Melanie to me.
I'm sorry for your loss and hope you found some peace in your grief.
She's just full out putting everything she has into it...impressive performance for one so young.
Yes and her songwriting skills were also impressive for someone so young. Candles in the Rain was her third album. At age 23!
No auto tune just a beautiful lady & one hell of a voice
Hadn’t been invented yet.
That was the point.
She was rushed to woodstock at the last minute to as a fill in. What a great thing they did, the whole world got to experience her!!
RIP Dear Melanie. Your music and inspiration live on. God rest your soul.😇
They don't make songs like this anymore. What a powerful soulful song.
Celine Dugalrousseau Shes beautiful the way she sings this song
Yes, they do.
@@HamiltonRb I agree, but I totally disagree with people who need to label other people's music as garbage, pathetic, etc, or question its quality.
Born in 1983 i know lots of music from the 60s to 80s.
This gem i hadn't caught yet - truely amazing, what a passion, what a song.
Rest in peace Melanie. Your music will live forever❤.
RIP Melanie Safka. Awesome talent. This song is so inspiring.
Brings chills and a tear to my eyes, Rest in Peace
Melanie -- so unique and special and passionate a singer and musician and artist! Rest in peace, beautiful one who shone so very bright! Loved you 😥💔😿🙏🥀✝️✌️
This song never gets old!
Rest in Peace - Thank you - this song is imprinted in my younger years!
Truly law down candles in the rain. Her vocal abilities really shine on this one. Bless you my Melanie rip
