Navigating Christmas as a Muslim | Dr. Shabir Ally

  • What should Muslims do on Christmas? Some Muslims refuse to say "Merry Christmas", and others decorate their homes with Christmas trees and presents. Dr. Shabir Ally says that we can do things during the Christmas season that are Muslim things to do, because we believe in Jesus, on whom be peace, and we believe in having decent, halal fun. He advises that we use the occasion to remember the life of Jesus and get together as a family to have dinner together on Christmas day.

Christian here (Catholic). I love these videos. The Teacher here is magnificent. He defends his faith, but he doesn’t disparage Christians as he does it. The world is turning away from God, and I pray that Muslims and Christians can fight together in common cause to turn the world back toward Him, our creator, our only hope, our common belief: God.

I am Christian and when my Muslim friends are wishing me a Happy Christmas, my heart starts to sing and almost burst with love and affection. This happens because a know that their faith is different from mine, but they are showing me that they want me to be happy and fulfilled in what I belief. This is one of the most generous and loving acts possible. Their well wishing makes me think that their faith is also a faith full of respect and love. In this we are deeply connected, believer to beliefer, human to human, generous person to generous person. When we are thinking and acting petty we make our faith look petty. When you Muslim brothers and sisters are wishing me a Merry Christmas you are gaining my respect for you as a person and your faith. Thank you to all of you who are great beliefers. Thank you for your generous words.

As a practicing Catholic, I was determined to go to the nearest Mosque to assure the Muslims there that I had no ill-will towards them after 9/11. They were shocked and surprised by our kindness to them. I was a little surprised at how they worship. While men and teenaged boys prayed in one area, women, girls and little boys pray in another. We are so used to families praying together. It was a real eye-opener. We also are used to wearing shoes while praying.

When a faith is diluted from its true source: in your case, Catholicism fell out of communion with the Orthodox Church. Differing practices begin to emerge. Look how different a Protestant service is compared to a Catholic service. And on it on it goes. The Jews separate by gender as does the orthodox Christians as do the Muslims. The true abrahamic religions all share this same practice. It is the schismatic or misguided offshoots of a particular branch of the abrahamic religions that are the “different” ones.

In fact, our Prophet wanted us to be so different from disbelievers that he told us we can’t even imitate them, and purposefully told us to do many things that differentiated us away from them. Claiming that Jesus (peace be upon him) is the son of God is such a horribly severe claim, it is one of the worst claims someone could make! By the One who’s hand my soul is within, I will NOT congratulate someone on celebrating a holiday of which the origin of the holiday claims such an egregious accusation against God that He has a son, authoobillah.

@Omar89 Yup. One of the most popular festivals of pagan Roman was Saturnalia, in honor of the titan Saturn, and it was celebrated from Dec. 17-23th. Once the Roman Empire left paganism the state just replaced this festival with Christmas since the populous was already use to these dates being a public holiday. All the none religious aspects of Christmas (Trees, elfs, reefs, etc.) also have pagan roots from the Germanic holiday of Yule celebrated by the Vikings before their conversion.

This isnt an attack on you brother - but you highlight part of the problem; Islam isnt meant to change. one Islam - one ummah.
People that cheer reform should know that reform is just another word for change and it is not our place to change islam based on the tastes of the passing generation, it is our place to uphold -- if people dont agree with islam, then they should walk the path that they feel convinction to walk - but not try to change the path of the ummah to suits their own tastes. There are lots of pretty lies these days... People of the book have done this in the past and their deeds and punishments were recorded as warnings to us. We can heed the warnings or join them.

I have embraced Islam 33 years ago. Before I am Islam, I went to the temples, church for just a visit. I only believe there is only one Creator. For me, temples, the church is only worshipping house. It is only a building. Celebrating any festival whether it is related to religion or otherwise, does not keep my faith away that ONLY ONE CREATOR WHO CREATE ME. Putting up a Christmas tree with ornaments is just like the Muslims in Malaysia lighting up their homes with lights to celebrate. It is nothing to do or relate to the FAITH INSIDE YOU. By just saying Merry Christmas or Happy Aid will make a person become a Christian or a Muslim? The answer will be NO. I have been wishing my Christian friends for 33 years and even putting up a Christmas tree at home and I am still a Muslim and my faith to Allah and the only ONE CREATOR!! Yes, you are right Dr Shabir, these are no-brainy people. I came across some of my Muslim friends who can't even walk and watch Christmas trees in KL. If your FAITH is strong, NOTHING WILL GETTING IN BETWEEN UR FAITH! This is my principle. If you are so afraid meaning, your faith in ur religion is faking. And please respect other religions as to how our Prophet Muhammad PBUH did. Christmas is not even Jesus birthday. It is just another day we celebrate in any country, national day, teacher's day, mother's day, fathers' day and so on. So why so TABOO of wishing MERRY CHRISTMAS???

Well, I'd avoid the trees in the house part. Do trees belong in houses? What commonly happens to these trees after the holidays? Is that good stewardship of what Allah has given us? And not getting too involved in the consumerism, cuz that's not great for muslims.
There are people who object to mothers' day and fathers' day on religious grounds because we should treat our parents as well every day of the year.
Or how about making your own winter celebration in January? A special day to brighten spirits and it doesn't overtly have religious significance. For me, December isn't deep enough in winter. Some time in JANUARY, now, the popular holidays have passed, it's still winter, 2 months and a couple weeks before the weather will start to show real promise of spring and weather getting less brisk. I spend enough time in nature to see the newest starts of budding and signs of growing, but lots of people don't stay connected enough to see the little signs. When others are taking their lights down, you can be brightening things up with new ones. It would draw my attention and a smile. It's nice sharing a holiday with so many people in America at the same time, it's also nice seeing other people randomly celebrate during the year. Tell random people: "Happy Holly Day" or "Happy Grapefruit Day" or whatever, and you can explain you do your own celebration just for fun and you like to spread some joy or humor to outsiders, as well. Celebrations are fun to experience and why does it have to be the standard reasons, like a birth, graduation, or a religious day? Make it appeal to the kids in your life and make it great to rival the Christmas season so they can tell their friends, "We don't celebrate Christmas like you do, but my family does THIS which is as good or better!"

I think many Christians know that Christmas isn't really about Jesus birth (in fact, nowhere in the bible is stated that we should celebrate anniversaries or something like that), it's more of a cultural thing and Dr. Shabir is right. It was established by the pope many years ago that his birth would be celebrated in december since the catholics wanted people to embrace christianity more than other pagan traditions at the time.
However, my family and church celebrate christmas with the focus on the birth of jesus and the reason he came into this world. We are grateful to God becaus he sent his only son Jesus to live among us and die for our sins.
Even though the date is not correct, we are still praising God for what he did. We should obviously be grateful every single day throughout the year but this day has been established to be a big day so there is no harm in giving thanks and praising our heavinly father for coming down to earth for us in the form of a human.

The key issue is not whether Muslims can celebrate Christmas in Christian societies, but whether christians can celebrate Christmas in Muslim societies! Only the Christian ethic gives one a right to be wrong and does not enforce its view. Christ will not punish you for rejecting him. Sadly, this is not the same for Islam. There is no peace for non-muslims in Islamic societies.

If someone is angered by, such a message, then please share your own message, so that we can compare. Christmas is the old mid winter festival, when the darkest days, switch to getting lighter, when animals were slaughtered at the point when fodder was low and they had got as fat as they could, when people were depressed from the Winter and Cold. Positive heart warming messages are needed at this time, whatever ones beliefs. Personally, what I dont celebrate is the rampant consumerism and commercialism. Peace be with ALL.

      @bilalwilliams9644 Рік тому

I disagree with this and please allow me to say why.
Greeting the kuffaar on Christmas and other religious holidays of theirs is haraam, by consensus, as Ibn al-Qayyim, may Allaah have mercy on him, said in Ahkaam Ahl al-Dhimmah: "Congratulating the kuffaar on the rituals that belong only to them is haraam by consensus, as is congratulating them on their festivals and fasts by saying ‘A happy festival to you’ or ‘May you enjoy your festival,’ and so on. If the one who says this has been saved from kufr, it is still forbidden. It is like congratulating someone for prostrating to the cross, or even worse than that. It is as great a sin as congratulating someone for drinking wine, or murdering someone, or having illicit sexual relations, and so on. Many of those who have no respect for their religion fall into this error; they do not realize the offensiveness of their actions. Whoever congratulates a person for his disobedience or bid’ah or kufr exposes himself to the wrath and anger of Allaah."
Congratulating the kuffaar on their religious festivals is haraam to the extent described by Ibn al-Qayyim because it implies that one accepts or approves of their rituals of kufr, even if one would not accept those things for oneself. But the Muslim should not aceept the rituals of kufr or congratulate anyone else for them, because Allaah does not accept any of that at all, as He says (interpretation of the meaning):
"If you disbelieve, then verily, Allaah is not in need of you, He likes not disbelief for His slaves. And if you are grateful (by being believers), He is pleased therewith for you. . ." [al-Zumar 39:7]
". . . This day, I have perfected your religion for you, completed My favour upon you, and have chosen for you Islaam as your religion . . ." [al-Maa’idah 5:3]
So congratulating them is forbidden, whether they are one’s colleagues at work or otherwise.
If they greet us on the occasion of their festivals, we should not respond, because these are not our festivals, and because they are not festivals which are acceptable to Allaah. These festivals are innovations in their religions, and even those which may have been prescribed formerly have been abrogated by the religion of Islaam, with which Allaah sent Muhammad (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) to the whole of mankind. Allaah says (interpretation of the meaning):
"Whoever seeks a religion other than Islaam, it will never be accepted of him, and in the Hereafter he will be one of the losers." [Aal ‘Imraan 3:85]
It is haraam for a Muslim to accept invitations on such occasions, because this is worse than congratulating them as it implies taking part in their celebrations.
Similarly, Muslims are forbidden to imitate the kuffaar by having parties on such occasions, or exchanging gifts, or giving out sweets or food, or taking time off work, etc., because the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: "Whoever imitates a people is one of them." Shaykh al-Islaam Ibn Taymiyah said in his book Iqtidaa’ al-siraat al-mustaqeem mukhaalifat ashaab al-jaheem: "Imitating them in some of their festivals implies that one is pleased with their false beliefs and practices, and gives them the hope that they may have the opportunity to humiliate and mislead the weak."
Whoever does anything of this sort is a sinner, whether he does it out of politeness or to be friendly, or because he is too shy to refuse, or for whatever other reason, because this is hypocrisy in Islaam, and because it makes the kuffaar feel proud of their religion.
Allaah is the One Whom we ask to make the Muslims feel proud of their religion, to help them adhere steadfastly to it, and to make them victorious over their enemies, for He is the Strong and Omnipotent.
      Majmoo’ah Fataawa wa Rasaa’il al-Shaykh Ibn ‘Uthaymeen, 3/369)

I appreciate his thrive to 'harmonise' between two and also symphatisize with him having to do that, to live in 'peace'. I think whoever follows a faith with sincerity should not be pushed to compromise it just for the sake of living together. Muslims and Christians and all other people of different faiths do alot together in terms of coming together on a daily basis; they live together, eat in same places, study together, trade and do business together, work together and alot of things, isn't it enough for us to be in harmony with all these various coming together? Do we need to do acts or worship together to really finally come together? I think not!
Respecting me as a Muslim while am observing an act of worship is by giving me my space and the peace I require to do it, not doing it with me, because it is hypocritical to do something that you don't really believe in! In terms of joy and celebrations, just because alot of Christians have made Christmas a holiday nowadays instead of a religious act of worship, does not necessarily legitimise it to Muslims as so, simply because of it's original aim and purpose, it is meant to celebrate birth of Jesus as related to God, which no Muslim believes in, hence can and should not enjoin in, Simple! As Muslims, we have different Eids (Celebrations), with 2 major ones in a year after Ramadan and at the end of Hajj (Piligimage), minor one is one a week in the form of Jummu'ah (Friday congregation). I think it is left for us as Muslims to make the best spectacle out of these times, especially for our younger ones that are always in need of such activities!

Imagine someone insulting your parents or someone dear and close to you, then taking that day as an annual celebration. Would you approve of it? Would you take part in it? Would you attend parties held before that day because ‘tis the season? Would you congratulate them for that celebration? Clearly, any sensible person with any intelligence would not.
However, when people have insulted Allah and celebrate that day and season, we find nothing wrong with joining in; you know, because we want to be “polite” and not be rude. God forbid we offend someone!
Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) said that Allah said: "The son of Adam tells a lie against Me and he has no right to do so; and he insults Me and has no right to do so. His lying against Me is his saying that I will not resurrect him as I created him for the first time. In fact, the first creation was not easier for Me than resurrecting him again (they are both easy for Me). His insult to Me is his saying that Allah has begotten a son, while I am The One, The Eternal Refuge, Who begets not nor was He begotten, and there is none like unto Me." (Al-Bukhari)
Attending Christmas parties and celebrating Christmas or congratulating others on this occasion is not a matter over which scholars have differed. Christmas should be about peace and goodwill and family, charity to those in need, which are all aspects Muslims are strong in. I really agree that we should not make Islam to look as if it's against everything but we shouldn't at the same time be too permissive . Out religion always takes a balanced/middle approach. I don't think it's right to outrightly say that we can celebrate Christmas given the various verses in the Quran which regard all issues around Christian view of Jesus as plain falsehood and blesphemy in religion. For you the Muslims in Canada it's holidays, so the talk should be about celebrating holidays if at all you must celebrate!! The idea of inclining rulings to what the community will say if I don't do this and that is not necessarily the best approach because it can be misguiding most of the times ...Remember the soul always inclines where it finds pleasure except that guided by Allah...and this why Allah had to send guidance. I know that many do not want to use evidences from Hadith but there is one Hadith that you will have to believe since it's online with the English saying that you definitely believe. The prophet SAW said "whoever (intentionally) likens him/herself to a group of people, he/she is from them....
