Funny. Most people who buy the Marshall MG series really like them. Even guys playing Marshall half stacks have said they like the MG series for dragging around to practice. I'm probably going to buy a MG30GFX for less than $300. Can't go wrong for a practice amp.
The MG30 was my first amp ever like 20 years ago. I was learning green day, sum 41, etc... just cranked it and ripped those power chords. I wish I never gave the amp away.
Both amps are well good enough for practicing at home which is really what they were designed for. I don’t get all these UA-cam videos slating the smaller practice amps.
I've been working in music shops for awhile, either one is usable in a pinch; but if I had to play a gig and my main amp blew up, the marshall mg is the clear winner. Biggest weakness is speaker, so if you have a cheap replacement to throw in there, do it
Line 6 was my first amp, it is now on the floor as a riser for my stereo receiver :) ...however, when learning guitar it did what I needed it to do, still would recommend if someone is just starting out.
They are good starter amps, I would recommend them to a complete beginner on a budget if they find one cheap, or if they prefer the orange crunchy sound then an orange crush 20 amp, which actually sounds pretty decent for a solid state amp, good little analogue amps.
I recently had my MG10CD listed for sale after parting with my guitar and it just wasn’t selling. I watched this episode and wondered how my Microbrute might sound plugged into the 10 watt MG. I was pleasantly surprised by the tone I was getting. It complimented the Microbrute nicely. So, I decided to keep the MG10 and took down the listing. ‘Tis now my little synth amp.
You know, they actually sound pretty good when they are together. I bet if you split the signal, mic'd em up nicely, and blended them together, you could get a really unique and, yes, good tone.
As an engineer, the Marshall still has hope in a mix. That Line 6 is utter compressed trash. Seriously. I would not call it a Vs. match. That Spider needs to be squashed under someone's shoe
I think Guitar snobs are above Synth snobs tbh. Just a little bit. We all listen to an artist that recorded their best album with potato’s and Pringle cans. Also there’s tons of albums that are complete crap that sound nice.
I've run into the full size MG heads at rehearsal studios from time to time. They're usable for metal if you throw an overdrive pedal in front of them. At least the HDFX series anyway. I wouldn't record an album with them or anything. But they're fine for band practice.
Love your channel, and as a long time guitarist this episode really grinds my gears :D Try finding a 15 watt combo amp with diverse range, excellent tone and lack of sweet spots in this price range, they don't exist. Review the 1 watt battery powered Marshall MS2 next haha. Beginner guitarists should save their money for a real half stack and pedalboard, don't spend $$$ on a low wattage practice amp because you will likely blow the speaker rocking in your garage regardless of the brand. Both of these product lines sound great with a reasonable size amp head, 4x12 half cabinet, and an experienced guitarist. I've owned a Marshall MG100HDFX with the slanted 4x12 half cab for many years and it always turns heads. I dial in the tone on the clean channel and one of the distortion channels only, same with the fx section (doesn't get much use, what pedals are for), and the amp head and cabinet sound amazing with any pedal in your signal chain. Line 6 makes some of the best value entry level combo amps out there; I don't prefer their bite for my music, but it works very well when done right and their amp emulations are perfect for beginners looking to expand their sonic palette. Just my two cents, keep up the great work!
Thanks! True that! There are quite some nice-sounding budget mini-amps, eg the Blackstar and Orange stuff but you know the drill: we will eventually make it work;)
I bought an mg15dfx dirt cheap, slapped a 10" greenback in there, changed the cloth grille from the boring black to a cool black and brown grille, got a custom marshall block logo, and boom. A completely different looking and sounding amp. It sounds cheap, but it still sounds good. Its a little muffled even with a great speaker but it has a cool ambient vibe. Like the sound you want when you're playing on the balcony of an old lodge in the middle of the woods.
I’m a fan of good solid state amps. Alongside many vintage tube amps I’ve owned over the years, I’ve always had my early 90s Fender Sidekick 25. It has the classic Fender tone and is a solid, reliable, light workhorse, and even has a real spring reverb tank. Both those amps in the video sound like those tiny, plastic, battery-powered amps you clip onto your belt.
I had a MG100HDFX Head unit with the 4x12 and it was unbelievably solid. It’s what introduced me to Marshall. It blew Peavey, Kustom, Crate, Randall and Line6 out of the water. Sure, it’s not the greatest Marshall to exist, but if you want affordable, raw, with tone and range, and that historic Marshall sound, the MG100 is great for that. Just know at the end of the day, adjusting the settings and a decent pedal or two, and you can find a sound you’re looking for without paying $2,000 or more for in just a head unit alone. Don’t settle for this stigma of shitting on lower end Marshalls because of the price. You can get anything you’re looking for with some extra equipment. Just know every band you listen to, and most UA-camrs doing reviews, have extra hardware in their guitar or pedals and it will never be the same as you and your raw amp. Just get some new pick ups, and pedals, and you’d never know what Marshall you’re playing on.
UA-camr Dave Simpson swears by those old Marshall MG's. And he does get a really nice tone out of them actually. I think the secret is playing through a JCM800 cab with good speakers.
I love my MG15R, the distortion is really good, specially after turning the volume knob past the 4th marker. My mids, treble and reverb is at max. Bass and gain are both dialed around 9. It's kept underneath my desk on the floor, so that adds a nice depth to the tone, and you'll stop hearing some static noise this way. I mostly play stuff similar to lamb of god, bodom, nevermore and such. If anyone is looking for a metal monster for a small room and this is within reach, have no doubt.🙂. Even with my 7 string it packs an insane punch. While i respect this videos opinion, if a metalhead is checking this, go check out Ola Englund's review of the MG15.
Marshall MG amps do something that i would never expect from a practice amp, which is, if you plug it into a PA and use that as a speaker you can actually get a tone like Kurt Cobain's SansAmp tone (which is my favorite distorted tone of all time)
I fixed an old gorilla tube amp someone gave me, to the best of my limited capabilities. It always on when you plug it in now but it works. I kinda like it.
I think it's just that the tone snobs have given these amps a bad reputation. They are both fine for beginners or for noodling around on in small spaces where higher volumes aren't needed.
I use the mg50 and man it is amazing with a guitar pedalboard guitar processor. And I use a wolfgang standard. Good all around amp for metal, hard rock, blues.
@@AudioPilz i have a Bugera T5 5 watt. And a Marshall dsl1 on backorder from sweetwater. Also have a Marshall class 5 tube combo but it's way too loud to use inside without an attenuator....which I dont have. Yeah I like tube amps for sure. 👍👍
I bought a brand new MG100FX COMBO in 2010 for 350€. The sound was very very un-clear and I couldn't get to make good repetition with it. It stayed at my parent house for some years and I finally tryed to sold it for some years first for 200€, then 150€, 100€ and finally 50€. No one wanted it ! In the mean time I bought a Orange Tiny Terror and a 2X12" cabinet with two celestion vintage speaker. Long story short, I cut the amplifier in two and separate the amplifier from the original speaker of the MG100FX and I short-wired the effect potentiometer (exept reverb wich is ok) to be sure I could ONLY use the clean clean on the cabinet. It works ok now (for occasionnal use).
I do not understand why many people say line 6 amp is bad..I used to use it .... I said line 6 is good ... but now I have moved to marshall ......both have a nice sound
Is think i saw a rickenbacker guitar in there like the one styled after the bass. Those look cool i wonder how they play/sound i had a 4003 bass till it got stolen. Uhhhg.
@@AudioPilz Van Halen III can at least still technically be called "music", whilst St Anger sounds like the whole album was done in one take, after the band all did heroin, and then each band member recorded their "part" whilst sat in individual toilet stalls (yes I am still angry because I pre-ordered St Anger)
specifically the 15W - that was more due to power rating and speaker. the larger Mustang III had some decent sounds in it - kinda like early 2000s multi-fx and amp modeling; good sounds are in there you just gotta dick around with the presets. The III has a lcd screen so its easier to mess with without using a goofy app
That was my second amp a long while ago, I failed to get a good sound out of any preset at the time, I don’t know if it would be different now though, I had a cheap kustom analogue amp before that and I would prefer that any day over the mustang, but the mustang did it’s job, it just didn’t do it that well
I'm a Bass Player who wanted play a little guitar and got me a Spider V3 so I have a soft spot for Line 6. I have couple of their products. However, the Spider 3 is the rather "special" one amongst all the other giants made by Line 6. And, my opinion on items like this are the following: everything has a place, you just have to figure out where you want to use it. If "shitty" sounds are you thing, welcome to the "Spider" way of doing it. Otherwise, get yourself a Helix floor or rack model and be happy with a financially thinner wallet in the process and have an eargasmly useful sound in perpetuity.
@@AudioPilz I'm not surprised as I've been virtually looking over your shoulder at all the cool fun gear you get to play with. Thanks for the cool videos! I'm enjoying them immensely as you cover these unusual items. As for the Helix, it is my third processor from Line 6, I have the POD X3 Pro Rack AND Floor models too. They're fun to break out and use on occasion. One of my better purchases that fell into Line 6 abandonment was a 4-String Variax Bass. They had such potential.....And yet there they are left abandoned on an Einbahnstrasse Ausfahrt of the Autobahn of Line 6 Technologies.... I would put a frowny face here, but I'm ok (until it stops working).
Funny though that these amps are almost definitely better than any amp Hendrix, page, Lennon,Clapton, gilmour etc had as a first, second or maybe third or fourth amp before they got good and really got going in their respective club circuits and upgrading gear n makin money and getting better.
Line 6 amps sound better than they used to but now, they're more difficult to use. Like it will nail Billy Corgan's sound at it's most crazy, but then it's hard to dial in "normal."
Lmaoo, the line spider 6 is the only electric guitar amp I’ve had for about 10 years! gotta say I’m a fan, great practice amp, you can maneuver and make some nice tones
I had the line 6, it sucked big time. So I bought the Spark 40, it sucks even more. So going to try the MG30GFX. Have seen some great reviews on it. Buying it tomorrow so 🤞
the Spark has a lot of amp models though really it shouldn’t be too hard to find a decent one. If anything plug some good headphones in and it should clean up the sound even more through its very good cab emulation
I have been able to get good sounds from entry-level amps like the Peavy Blazer (II/Red) and a Fender (Japan) SD-15CE, but with so many great options for guitarist now, I am kinda surprised at how shieze these best sellers sound, especially in your very well made video. The speaker is invariably where the cost-cutting occurs on practice amps. I wonder if a $40 speaker swap would help these.
Guys these amos are fine for beginners .noones touring or gigging with it .its a digital modeling marketing move. Someone with a squire, sawtooth ,epi, or first act ain't gonna know tube tone and it won't matter to learn on. They're greeeeeat like Tony tge Tiger says for begineers
I use a Spider 75 with the cheap foot controller fed by the output of a cheap transparent overdrive stomp box and for as cheap as I got it used, I really like the versatility. It has a lot of serviceable tones as far as I'm concerned, but yeah, it can sound pretty crappy.
@@AudioPilz Title - Bad Gear...Battle of Bad Amps, yep you pretty much said it! I am inclined to agree with you tho, having just got the 30Watt MG version..
As someone whose straddled both the synth and the guitar worlds for some time this was a great vid, maybe try another guitar vid now that you've gotten alot more subscribers? Dunno that I'd even recommend the Line 6 for industrial though. TBH I don't even know why you'd go with either unless you were a kid because $500 should get you a good used Line 6 Pod Pro and while even that ruffles purist feathers, you can get great tones for recording purposes. I talked once with the Singer/Guitarist for the swiss band Sybreed and I was shocked that they didn't mic a single cab for any of their albums.
I'm the proud owner of a MG15 DFX, the original MGs, I bought it some 15 or 16 years ago, and to me it sounds fantastic!!... the only drawback is that you can't dial a small amount of gain, even at its lowest position, it really goes to eleven!!...you have to play with the guitar volume for this, but you don't hit the gain channel of a Marshall to play skinny poppy songs, right?...having said that ,the cleans are round and very defined, and with the right guitar, you could even play some jazzy lines if required...the effects are a sweet addition ,but not top...but all in all the package keeps you playin'!!...was my practice amp until I got a Roland Microcube as a gift, and now the MG stays ay my holidays home...but still used and loved!...And there I can make it roar with it's tiny 8", and man, it's LOUD!....Maybe some day I'll try the ext. spkr. mod, but for the time being, I'm happy with it.
I agree, the Boss Katana mk ll 50 is a fantastic sounding amp to my ear. After hearing it in head to head battles against other similar amps in videos i decided to go listen to them in person in the same head to head battles. The end result was the same. I bought the Katana and have been very satisfied with it. As for my first comment about recommendations, I was wanting to hear what other people’s thoughts were on the subject.
I used to work in a guitar shop selling the Line 6 amps. Spider was so bad that even the beginners did not want to buy one. It makes a pro guitarist sound like an amateur.
@@AudioPilz Hi. No I will watch it today. I was commenting about the first gen Spider amps. They fixed the issues in the next generation of products. I like Line 6 brand by the way.
Nothing wrong with the MG especially the older ones and the line 6 IV was used in many recording studios one of them was Sigma sound..if you really done you're research you would have known this..
You said you were a lousy guitar player in one of your videos. I submit to you a lousy guitar (or synth, novelty, or toy...you choose). The Casio DG-20. A synth with guitar strings that is sure to disappoint both the synth user and the guitar player. Check it out and feel the pain. Great work by the way.
@@AudioPilz their Crush series are surprisingly great sounding for being a budget-friendly solid-state unit. There's no modelling with that one, the signal chain is completely analog. The enclosure is super solid too, it has the same feel as the Orange cabs. The 35RT impressed me enough that my first proper tube amp will almost guaranteed be a Micro Dark with a matching Orange 2x12. Their cabs are legendary for a reason.
I had an orange amp. Those amps mean business. Even the cheap budget amps seem like a good build quality. The only reason I got rid of it was because it could rock ANY tone EXCEPT those late 80’s hair metal tones, so I bought a MG15DFX and its perfect for those late 80’s hair band sounds that are my absolute favorite
The older Marshall MG Amps are remarkable I have a 2009 Marshall MG 100FX 2X12 Combo paid $600 for it and 12 years later still going strong and sounds fantastic this Amp is great for the professional guitarist and as far as Line6 goes the Line6 IV 75 Watt is a another fantastic Amp...most of you UA-cam so called experts put your foot in you're mouths quite often
another one to search out - the ZOOM 505 guitar multi-effects pedal. Cheap plastic box with the most awful sounding digital effects. ZOOM has done some outstanding multiFX, but that wasn't one of them.
IMHO the main problem of both of these amps is the speaker/cabinet. Hook them up to a 4x12 and I bet they open up tone-wise. EDIT: I see already people commented the same. :D
Wayne static gigged with a mg100hdfx. I have one as a backup amp and well just nostalgia I guess. I've never used a line 6 anything however the marshall MG sounds a little splashy. However it's a decent amp.
You’re mic’ing the amps… can’t speak for the Marshall, but the line six is pretty decent for recording if you bypass the speaker. Which is its downfall.
Why bad gear? The Marshall MG has no place in bad gear. The Spider is right there, it's really bad. But what do you think makes the MG bad? I have 3 MGs, the MG15 CFX, the MG30CFX and the MG100HCFX and I am more than happy with all 3. I even think the MG100 HCFX is better than my previous bugera tube amp. As I can unconditionally recommend the Marshall MG series. The old MG series (DFX) really wasn't that good, but the new MG series, which can also be seen in the test, is much better. Many probably don't know that there is the new FX series and connect the FX sound with the old FX series
I was never a big fan of line 6, i borrowed a bass pod and it did have a few cool sounds, you couldnt really tweak them. I liked my boss gt6b waaaay better.
@@AudioPilz the Marshall and line 6 both sound good. Depending what you are playing . I’ve used line 6 for 15 years and finally made a switch to the marshall MG50fx and it sounds great for a practice amp.

Yeah, the speaker is kind of the weak(est) spot
The rat punching the steak? Ah! my man!🤣🤣
Had me ROFLing ;)
I do not understand why many people say line 6 amp is bad..I used to use it .... I said line 6 is good ... but now I have moved to marshall ......both have a nice sound
There are many nice L6 products out there!
So I have the Line 6 III version of this, and I changed the speaker to a Skar Audio full range and sealed the little cab. Sounds better.
Great hack!
Is think i saw a rickenbacker guitar in there like the one styled after the bass. Those look cool i wonder how they play/sound i had a 4003 bass till it got stolen. Uhhhg.
Never heard it but Mats REALLY likes it. It has a very unique sound so we didn't use it for the video
Another great vid!
Thanks!!!

Danke! Ein guter Gitarrist hilft da sehr ;)

@@Uz7Racer wie gesagt, der Ton ist in den Fingern (und ein wenig post pro;)
“The St. Anger of amps”... that was harsh!
...and even Van Halen III was not exactly nice
@@AudioPilz Van Halen III can at least still technically be called "music", whilst St Anger sounds like the whole album was done in one take, after the band all did heroin, and then each band member recorded their "part" whilst sat in individual toilet stalls
(yes I am still angry because I pre-ordered St Anger)
I don't really think it was too harsh, they both sound like hot garbage.
Surprised you didn't include an old fender mustang! The old ones were pretty terrible haha
Yeah, those are not always fun...
specifically the 15W - that was more due to power rating and speaker. the larger Mustang III had some decent sounds in it - kinda like early 2000s multi-fx and amp modeling; good sounds are in there you just gotta dick around with the presets.
Big Helix fan here!
Didn't they mostly use modded tube radios? These sounded awesome...
Line 6 amps sound better than they used to but now, they're more difficult to use. Like it will nail Billy Corgan's sound at it's most crazy, but then it's hard to dial in "normal."
That's what a lot of L6 players told me recently
I have a line 6 Spider IV 15 for practicing in my apartment. It sounds better than it does in this video.
Never played a bad Marshall. That intro riff was so awful, maybe a bit of practice would make it sound better.
Thank you for the feedback!!!
@@AudioPilz But the Streetfighter 2 style intro was inspired!
Lmaoo, the line spider 6 is the only electric guitar amp I’ve had for about 10 years! gotta say I’m a fan, great practice amp, you can maneuver and make some nice tones
It's certainly usable
Try some other amps especially the katana you will be surprised just how lacking the line6 is.
I run a Helix through the aux in of an MG30dfx and it gives the MG a whole new purpose and it does not suck at it.
Thank you!!!
I love my spider3 75 watt combo. I just sent back a Marshall dsl40cr. I was very disappointed with the tone. Especially for a 850 dollar amp.
Yeah, not exactly a Plexi
I had the line 6, it sucked big time.
So I bought the Spark 40, it sucks even more. So going to try the MG30GFX. Have seen some great reviews on it.
Buying it tomorrow so 🤞
Nice!
the Spark has a lot of amp models though really it shouldn’t be too hard to find a decent one. If anything plug some good headphones in and it should clean up the sound even more through its very good cab emulation
If you stopped buying shitty amps you could finally have a decent amp.lmao
What’s wrong with the Marshall?
There are better Marshalls I would say
@@AudioPilz in that price range? Not being sarcastic here, genuinely asking.
THX! I agree, the speakers are the main suspect.
probably, but not worth it.
Word!
Es war schwer zu sagen, welcher Verstärker schlecht klang, weil dein Freund ein großartiger Musiker ist. Gute Arbeit!
Mats hats ziemlich drauf ;) Besten Dank!
I use a Spider 75 with the cheap foot controller fed by the output of a cheap transparent overdrive stomp box and for as cheap as I got it used, I really like the versatility. It has a lot of serviceable tones as far as I'm concerned, but yeah, it can sound pretty crappy.
Isn't the 75 a completely different beast?
Man, Send that MG to Dave Simpson and tell me if it's a Bad amp xd
Did I say that?
@@AudioPilz Title - Bad Gear...Battle of Bad Amps, yep you pretty much said it! I am inclined to agree with you tho, having just got the 30Watt MG version..
so, the problem is the speaker quality or the amp? 😯
The amp is not high end but the speaker is the real weak spot. There's a video where we bypassed it. Makes it much better
thanks 😀😀😀😀😀
As someone whose straddled both the synth and the guitar worlds for some time this was a great vid, maybe try another guitar vid now that you've gotten alot more subscribers? Dunno that I'd even recommend the Line 6 for industrial though. TBH I don't even know why you'd go with either unless you were a kid because $500 should get you a good used Line 6 Pod Pro and while even that ruffles purist feathers, you can get great tones for recording purposes. I talked once with the Singer/Guitarist for the swiss band Sybreed and I was shocked that they didn't mic a single cab for any of their albums.
Thanks! TBH the synth world is much more relaxed - I'll stay here;)
I'm the proud owner of a MG15 DFX, the original MGs, I bought it some 15 or 16 years ago, and to me it sounds fantastic!!... the only drawback is that you can't dial a small amount of gain, even at its lowest position, it really goes to eleven!!...you have to play with the guitar volume for this, but you don't hit the gain channel of a Marshall to play skinny poppy songs, right?...having said that ,the cleans are round and very defined, and with the right guitar, you could even play some jazzy lines if required...the effects are a sweet addition ,but not top...but all in all the package keeps you playin'!!...was my practice amp until I got a Roland Microcube as a gift, and now the MG stays ay my holidays home...but still used and loved!...And there I can make it roar with it's tiny 8", and man, it's LOUD!....Maybe some day I'll try the ext. spkr. mod, but for the time being, I'm happy with it.
i agree with the combo amps of line 6 but with the heads you can get amazing tones
just NEVER use the insane channel, its dirty AF, the metal green light channel tone is the correct one.
👍👍👍
The 50 watt mg is a good amp with the tube emulator on. Small ones are probably bad.
👍
Ok...so just what do you recommend for an amp in keeping it within the same price range?
Boss Katana gets a lot of love. Never tried it myself, tho
Have you seen the Better Gear episode to the little Spider?
@@AudioPilz Hi. No I will watch it today. I was commenting about the first gen Spider amps. They fixed the issues in the next generation of products. I like Line 6 brand by the way.
I wonder if my Marshall CODE50 is better than this MG. I don't have any complaints tbh
The CODE got quite some honorable mentions in that context
Nice playing
THX!!!
Nothing wrong with the MG especially the older ones and the line 6 IV was used in many recording studios one of them was Sigma sound..if you really done you're research you would have known this..
👍👍👍
Lmao no serious studio records woth a line 6 spider. Stop reading and start playing
I love the Marshall MG and I can dismiss this nonsense.
Thank you for the feedback
You said you were a lousy guitar player in one of your videos. I submit to you a lousy guitar (or synth, novelty, or toy...you choose). The Casio DG-20. A synth with guitar strings that is sure to disappoint both the synth user and the guitar player. Check it out and feel the pain.
Great work by the way.
Oh, yeah, the Casio DG-20. I only know the legends. Must be an abomination!
@@AudioPilz
It is my friend...it is.
As someone who has owned both an MG and a Spider, the Marshall is vastly superior.
The Orange I have now sounds far better than either though.
Love Oranges!
@@AudaciousAce1989 can it do 80s metal like matallica & slayer?
try the mxr prime distortion pedal. it is the worst bit of kit that I have. or possibly some of the mini bedroom amps in a shootout.

One man's trash...;)

I had this korg effects board that was pretty lame. Dont remember its name or what even happened to it, guess i gave it away.
Keep me posted when you remember
I think its a korg A5 guitar multi effects. It seems like it gets good reviews but at 16 yrs old, i kinda hated it.
another one to search out - the ZOOM 505 guitar multi-effects pedal. Cheap plastic box with the most awful sounding digital effects. ZOOM has done some outstanding multiFX, but that wasn't one of them.
I already have a guitar player working on songs for it
IMHO the main problem of both of these amps is the speaker/cabinet. Hook them up to a 4x12 and I bet they open up tone-wise.
EDIT: I see already people commented the same. :D

You’re mic’ing the amps… can’t speak for the Marshall, but the line six is pretty decent for recording if you bypass the speaker. Which is its downfall.
True that. There's an actual episode about that!
I don't hate the gear, I just reflect on people hating it on the internet
I was never a big fan of line 6, i borrowed a bass pod and it did have a few cool sounds, you couldnt really tweak them. I liked my boss gt6b waaaay better.
